This section covers replacing a full-height drive with one
or two half-height drives.
Remove Old Drive
1. At the rear, remove the SCSI cables and terminator
from the appropriate drive cover.
2. Loosen the two thumbscrews on the drive cover.
3. Remove the drive cover as follows:
a. Gently pull the drive cover out and hold it about
2 inches (5cm) below the drive bay.
b. Unplug the fan wiring from the fan connector.
c. Pull the drive assembly out about 1 inch (2.5cm)
and unplug the SCSI cable assembly.
d. Set the old drive cover aside.
4. Unplug power and serial cables from drive assembly.
5. With the wiring off to the right, grasp the guide grips
and slide the drive assembly out of the unit.
6. Remove the four screws that secure the old drive to
the drive assembly guides and set the drive aside.
Install New Drives
CAUTION: A single half-height drive must ALWAYS be
installed in the top position in the drive bay.
1. Check the jumper pins on the new drives to confirm
they are at the default settings (ON-off-off-off-ON-ON).
2. Using four new M3x5mm screws, loosely attach the
half-height drive in the top position between the guides
with the thicker guide on the left (when viewed from
the front) and the handles extending beyond the rear.
3. Do one of the following:
•If adding just one half-height drive, slide the air
baffle into the guides below the new drive (Figure 8
on page 3) and loosely attach it with two new
M3x5mm screws.
•If adding two half-height drives, slide the second
drive into the guides below the top drive (Figure 5
on page 2) and loosely attach it with four new
M3x5mm screws that came with it.
4. Tighten all guide screws.
Reinstall Drive Assembly
1. With the drive bay wiring positioned off to the right,
slide the new drive assembly into the empty bay
leaving about 1 inch (2.5cm) sticking out.
2. If unit has a single-connector serial cable, replace it
with the enclosed serial Y-cable.
3. Attach the black serial Y-cable to the top drive.
4. If installed, attach the white serial Y-cable to the
bottom drive.
5. Attach the power cable to the drive.
Continue with “Reassembly and Test” on page 4.
IMPORTANT: For optimum performance of the library, it is
recommended that each drive be connected to the host
by a separate bus.
NOTE: To enable independent buses on an ARCvault 24
library, you must replace the old 2-port drive cover with the
new 4-port drive cover assembly that came with this kit.
1. Install the 4-port drive cover as follows:
a. Holding the drive cover below the drive bay opening,
plug in the fan connector.
b. Attach the SCSI cable assemblies.
The top assembly goes to the top drive and the lower
assembly to the bottom drive (if installed).
c. Slide the drive assembly the rest of the way into
the drive bay.
d. Carefully seat the drive cover and tighten the two
thumbscrews.
IMPORTANT: Be sure drive wiring is secure in the
space between the drive assembly and drive cover.
2. Attach the SCSI connections:
•For a second drive in a drive bay, connect the
existing SCSI cable and terminator to the top two
SCSI ports. Connect the new SCSI cable and
terminator to the bottom two SCSI ports.
•For a new drive in an empty drive bay, connect
the new SCSI cable and terminator to the top two
SCSI ports.
3. Plug in the power cord and power on the unit.
4. During POST, as soon as the reconfiguration message
appears, press OK.
5. After the library reboots, check the OCP Status to
verify that the unit recognizes the new drive.
