Overland Storage ARCvault Series User manual

Part Number 10400182-101 07/2008 ©2008 Overland Storage, Inc. Page 1 of 4
This document describes how to add a SAS half-height
tape drive to an ARCvault loader or library.
WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock or
damage to equipment, always remove the power cord.
CAUTION: Adding a SAS tape drive:
• Results in a library reconfiguration
• Disables any existing partitions in an ARCvault 48
• Requires the firmware to be at 5.06 or higher.
NOTE: The existing SAS drive cover on an ARCvault 48
supports up to four (4) drives (see Figure 8).
Unpacking
Carefully unpack and verify that you have all the parts:
•SAS tape drive with four M4x6 screws
•Internal SATA to SFF-8482 cable assembly
•ARCvault 48 lower drive bay kit
(Consists of the Secondary SAS drive cover, serial
Y-cable, air baffle, drive guides, and screws)
•These add-on instructions
Electrostatic Discharge Information
A discharge of static electricity can damage micro-circuitry
or static-sensitive devices. To help prevent Electrostatic
Discharge (ESD), observe standard ESD precautions.
1. At the Operator Control Panel (OCP), press Power >
Power Off Library > OK (at power down message).
2. After the unit has shut down, remove the power cord.
3. Determine the type of drive installation being done:
•To add a second tape drive to a drive bay, use the
“Add a Second Drive to a Drive Bay” section.
•To install a tape drive in an empty ARCvault 48
lower drive bay, use the “Add a Drive to the Lower
Drive Bay” section.
4. Go to the appropriate section to continue.
This section covers adding a second half-height drive to an
ARCvault loader or library.
Remove the Drive Assembly
1. At the rear, remove the SAS cable from the drive cover
(Figure 1).

4. Unplug power and serial cables from drive assembly.
5. With the wiring off to the right, use the guide handles
to gently pull the drive assembly out of the unit.
Install the New Drive
1. Remove the air baffle (Figure 3) between the guides.
Figure 3. Remove Air Baffle
2. Slide the new drive into the drive assembly (Figure 4)
and attach it with four new M3x6mm screws.
If necessary, loosen the top drive screws to release the
pressure from the guides. Retighten when done.

Reinstall the Drive Assembly
1. With the wiring positioned off to the right, slide the
drive assembly back into the proper bay leaving
about 1 inch (2.5cm) sticking out.
2. Attach the serial Y-cable to the drives (Figure 5).
•Attach the black cable to the top drive.
•Attach the white cable to the bottom drive.
CAUTION: You MUST connect the BLACK cable to
the TOP drive and the WHITE to the BOTTOM drive.

3. Attach the power cables to the drives.
4. Attach the smaller SATA plug of the new internal SAS
cable to the appropriate connector on the inside of the
SAS drive cover (Figure 8 on page 3).
•For Drive 2, use the second connector from the top.
•For Drive 4, use the last connector.
5. Holding the drive cover below the drive bay opening,
plug in the fan connector.
6. Attach the internal SAS cable assemblies to the
appropriate drives.

This section covers adding a drive in an empty lower drive
bay of an ARCvault 48 using the following:
•Secondary SAS lower drive cover assembly (fan only)
•Left and right drive guides with four screws
•Serial Y-cable
•Air baffle with two screws
Remove the Drive Bay Baffle
Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws
holding the drive bay baffle (Figure 1 on page 1) and set
the baffle and screws aside.
Prepare New Half-Height Drive
CAUTION: A single half-height drive must ALWAYS be
installed in the top position in the drive bay.
1. Using the new M3x6mm screws, loosely attach the
drive in the top position between the supplied guides
with the thicker guide on the left (when viewed from
the front) and the handles extending beyond the rear.
2. Slide the air baffle into the guides below the new
drive, aligning it to the guide screw holes.
3. Using the new M3x6mm screws from the upgrade kit,
loosely attach the air baffle to the guides (Figure 6).
4. Tighten all six guide screws.
