This document describes how to remove and replace a SAS
Tape Drive assembly in an ARCvault loader or library.
Unpacking
Carefully unpack and verify that you have all the parts:
•SAS Tape Drive assembly (half-height)
•Four M4x6mm screws
•These remove & replace instructions
WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock or
damage to equipment, always disconnect the power.
Electrostatic Discharge Information
A discharge of static electricity can damage micro-circuitry
or static-sensitive devices. To help prevent Electrostatic
Discharge (ESD), observe standard ESD precautions.
1. At the Operator Control Panel (OCP), press Power >
Power Off Library > OK (at power down message).
2. After the unit has shut down, remove the power cord.
3. At the rear, remove the SAS cable from the Primary
drive cover (Figure 1).

4. Loosen the two thumbscrews on the appropriate
drive cover.
For an ARCvault 48, Drives 1 and 2 are behind the
Primary (upper) drive cover; Drives 3 and 4 (if
installed) are behind the Secondary (lower) drive cover.

5. Remove the drive cover as follows:
a. Gently pull the drive cover out and hold it about
2 inches (5cm) below the drive bay (Figure 4).
b. Unplug the fan wiring from the fan connector.
c. Using the guide handles, pull the assembly out
about 1 inch (2.5cm) and unplug the SAS cables
from the drives.
NOTE: If more than one drive is installed, it is
recommended that the SAS cables be numbered starting
with marking the top drive cable as “1.”
d. For and ARCvault 48 with drives in the lower drive
bay, unplug those SAS cables from the drive cover.
e. Set the drive cover aside.
6. Unplug the power and serial cables and position
them off to the right (Figure 4 on page 2).
7. Using the guide grips, slide the drive assembly out.

1. Remove the four screws that secure the half-height
drive to the guides (Figure 3).
2. Slide the old drive out of the guides leaving the other
drive or air baffle in place.
If necessary, loosen the screws on the other drive or air
baffle. Retighten them when done.
3. Slide the new drive into the guides.
4. Using the four new M3x6mm screws, attach the drive
to the guides.

1. With the drive bay wiring positioned off to the right,
slide the drive assembly into the empty bay leaving
about 1 inch (2.5cm) protruding.
2. Reattach the power and serial cables to the drives.
CAUTION: For half-height drives, you must always
attach the black serial cable to the top drive and
the white serial cable to the bottom drive
(Figure 4).

3. Reinstall the drive cover:
a. Holding the drive cover below the drive bay opening,
plug in the fan connector (Figure 4).
b. Reattach the SAS drive cables (Figure 5).
c. Slide the drive assembly all the way into the bay.

4. Carefully reseat the drive cover and tighten the two
thumbscrews.
CAUTION: Ensure the drive wiring is secure in the
space between the drive assembly and drive cover.
5. If replacing the Primary drive cover, reconnect the
external SAS cable to the drive cover.
6. Plug in the power cord and power on the unit.
7. Verify the following:
•The fan is blowing on the new drive cover.
•ARCvault sees all the installed drives.
•The host can see and access the drives.
