1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1. Before servicing, unplug the AC power cord to prevent an electric
shock.
2. When replacing parts, use onlythe manufacturer's recommended

components.
3. Check the condition of the power cord. Replace ifwear or damage
isevident.
4. After servicing, be sure to restore the lead dress, insulation
barriers, insulation papers, shields, etc.
5. Before returning the serviced equipment to the customer, be sure
to perform the following insulation resistance test to prevent the
customer from being exposed to shock hazards.
1.2. INSULATIONRESISTANCETEST
1. Unplug the power cord and short the twoprongs of the plug with
ajumper wire.
2. Turn on the power switch.
3. Measure the resistance value with an ohmmeter between the
jumpered AC plug and each exposed metal cabinet part
(screw heads, control shafts, bottom frame, etc.).
Note: Some exposed parts maybe isolated from the chassisby
design. These will read infinity.
4. Ifthe measurement isoutside the specified limits, there isa
possibilityof ashock hazard.

1.3. FORSERVICETECHNICIANS
ICs and LSIs are vulnerable tostatic electricity.
Whenrepairing, the following precautions will helpprevent recurring malfunctions.
1. Cover the plasticpart's boxes with aluminum foil.
2. Ground the soldering irons.
3. Use aconductive mat on the worktable.
4. Donot touch the ICor LSI pins with bare fingers.
1.4. BATTERYCAUTION
CAUTION
Danger of explosion ifthe batteryisreplaced incorrectly. Replace
onlywith the same or equivalent type recommended bythe
manufacturer. Discard used batteries according to following caution
:
Disposal of lithium batteries shouldbe performed bypermitted,
professional disposal firms knowledgeableinstate government
federal and local hazardous materialsand hazardous waste
transportation and disposal requirements.
Abatterycontinues to have no transportation limitations as long as
itisseparated to prevent short circuits and packed instrong
packaging.
Commercial firms that dispose of anyquantityof lithium cells
shouldhave amechanism inplace to account for theirultimate
disposition. Thisisagood practice for all types of commercial or
industrial waste.

1.5. AC CAUTION
Forsafety, before closing the lowercabinet, please make sure of the following precautions.
1. The earth lead isfixed with the screw.
2. The AC connector isconnected properly.
3. Wind the earth lead around the core 5times.
4. Wind the earth AC around the core 4times.

1.6. PERSONALSAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1.6.1. MOVING SECTIONS OFTHE UNIT
Be careful not tolet yourhair, clothes, fingers, accessories, etc., become caught inanymoving
sections of the unit.
The moving sections of the unit are the rollers and a gear. There is a separation rollerand a
document feedrollerwhichare rotatedbythe document feedmotor. A gearrotates the two
rollers. Be careful not totouchthemwithyourhands, especiallywhenthe unit is operating.
1.6.2. LIVE ELECTRICALSECTIONS
All the electrical sections of the unit suppliedwithAC powerbythe AC powercordare live.
Neverdisassemble the unit forservice withthe AC powersupplypluggedin.
CAUTION:
AC voltage issupplied to the primaryside of the power supplyunit.
Therefore, alwaysunplug the AC power cord before disassembling
for service.

1.6.3. LASER BEAM SECTION
The printerof this unit utilises a laser. Use of controls oradjustments orperformance of
procedures otherthanthose specifiedhereinmayresult inhazardous radiation exposure.

Electrical charges accumulate on a person. Forinstance, clothes rubbing togethercandamage
electric elements orchange theirelectrical characteristics. Inordertoprevent static electricity,
toucha metallic part that is groundedtorelease the static electricity. Nevertouchthe electrical
sections suchas the powersupplyunit, etc.

(1) Connect the handset cord.
(2) Connect the telephone line cord.
(3) Connect the powercord.
-When the power isturned on for the first time, the unitwill print
some basicinformation.

-The warrantydoes not cover damage due to power line surges or
lightning. For additional equipment protection, werecommend the
use of asurge protector. The following types are available;
TELESPIKEBLOKMODEL TSB(TRIPPE MFG. CO.), SPIKEBLOK
MODEL SK6-0 (TRIPPE MFG. CO.), SUPERMAX(PANAMAX) or
MP1 (ITW LINX).
The warrantydoes not cover damage due to power line surges or

-When you operate thisproduct, the power outlet shouldbe near
the product and easilyaccessible.
-You can connect an answering machine or extension telephone to
the external telphone jack (EXT) on thisunit.
To use the fax machine witha computeron the same line.
-We recommend you use separate wall jacks for the fax machine
and the computer.
-Set the fax machine to TEL mode.
-The device which has the shortest ring setting will answer the call
first.
-Ifthe computer provides aport for atelphone line, connect the
faxmachine to thisport on the computer.

1.14. INSTALLATION
1.14.1. INSTALLATION SPACE
The space requiredtoinstall the unit is shownbelow.
The dimensions givenare necessaryforthe unit tooperate efficiently.
Note:
-Avoidexcessive heat or humidity.
-Use the unitwithinthe following ranges of temperature and
humidity.
-Ambient temperature: 5°Cto 35°C
-Relative humidity:20%to 80%(without condensation)
-Power cord length shouldbe less than 5meters (16.4feet). Using a
longer cord mayreduce the voltage or cause malfunctions.
-Avoiddirect sunlight.
-Donot install near devices which containmagnets or generate
magneticfields.
-Donot subject the unitto strong physical shock or vibration.
-Keep the unitclean. Dust accumulation can prevent the unitfrom
functioning properly.
-To protect the unitfrom damage, holdboth sides when you move it.

1.14.2. INSTALLING THE PAPER TRAY
Install the papertrayintothe twoslots on the back
of the unit ( ). Let it leanback until it clicks into
place ( ).
Note:
- Donot place the unit inareas where the papertray
maybe obstructedbya wall, etc.
1.14.3. DOCUMENTSTACKER
Align withthe ribs on the document exit ( ). Pull
the document stackerforwardgentlyuntil it clicks
intoplace ( ).

Line up the slots inthe paperstackerwiththe pegs
on the bottomof the unit, thenslide until locked.
Openthe paperstackerextenderwhenyou use
legal size paper.
-Thepaper stacker can hold approx. 100 sheets ofprinted paper. Remove
theprinted paper beforetheyarefilled on thepaper stacker.
1.14.5. INSTALLING THE RECORDING PAPER
Letter*, legal orA4 size recording papercanbe usedforfax messages. The unit canholdup to
150 sheets of 60 g/m2to75 g/m2(16 lb. to20lb.) paperor120 sheets of 90 g/m2(24 lb.) paper.

Legal: 216 mm × 356 mm (8 1/2” × 14”)
A4: 210 mm × 297 mm (8 1/4” × 11 11/16”)
COM10: 105 mm × 241 mm (4 1/8” × 9 1/2”)

The unit is set forlettersize paperbydefault. If you want touse legal orA4 size paper, change
the setting (Code no. 16 on PROGRAM MODE TABLE()).

1.Pinchthe right side of the recording paperguide,
thenslide it opentoits full width.
2.Fanthe stack of papertoprevent a paperjam.
3. Insert the paperintothe recording paperentrance.
- The papershouldnot be overthe tab.
- If the paperis not insertedcorrectly, readjust the
paper, orthe papermayjam.
4. Adjust the widh of the guides tothe size of the
recording paperbysliding the light recording paper
guide.
Note forrecording paper:
-Avoidusing paper with acotton and/or fiber content that isover
20%, such as letterhead paper or paper used for resumes.
-Donot use different types or thicknesses of paper at the same
