Description
The latest version of the SP™3 has the
new BWX high ower Black Widow woofer
incor orated, as well as a very nice
looking cabinet design. The SP 3X is a
three-way s eaker system com rised of a
15" Black Widow BWX woofer with a
Kevlar®im regnated cone, a 6-1/2" ro
mid-range in a sealed sub-enclosure, and
an RX 22 com ression driver loaded onto
a CH®3 constant directivity horn.
The SP 3X has a tra ezoidal sha ed
enclosure, which reduces the build-u of
standing waves inside the enclosure,
which minimizes mid-bass and mid-range
colorations due to the cabinet. It is
constructed of 3/4" OSB and is covered
with a durable black car et. The enclosure
corners are reinforced with olymer ca s,
and a black owder-coated ex anded
metal grille covers the lower half of the
system to rotect the woofer from external
damage. An SA-1 stand mount ada ter is
built-in for ease of s eaker stand use.
The three-way system consists of the
following driver com onents: a 15" Black
Widow BWX woofer with a Kevlar
im regnated cone, and a water-resistant
treated cone and dust ca for su erior
environmental stability. Ca able of over
500 W of continuous ower handling (AES
Std 2-1984), the woofer can handle a lot
of sheer ower. The mid-range is carried
by a 6-1/2" rofessional grade direct
radiator with a treated cone and
surrounded in a sealed sub-enclosure,
and it rovides high articulation in the
vocals. The high frequencies are handled
by an RX 22 two-inch titanium dia hragm
com ression driver utilizing ferrofluid
cooling, cou led to a CH 3 constant
directivity horn. This horn has a smooth,
even res onse with good high frequency
dis ersion. The RX22 driver features the
Radialinear Planar Phase Correction
System, under US Patent 6,064,745,
which rovides smoother and extended
high frequency res onse.
In ut connection to the system is
made via two 1/4" hone jacks in arallel,
and a 4- in Neutrik®switching jack is
rovided for bi-am ing flexibility while
maintaining su erior signal integrity. The
internal assive crossover features
Peavey’s exclusive Sound Guard
rotection circuit for both the tweeter and
the mid-range s eaker, and an advanced
to ology crossover with high erformance
com onents, to rovide high ower
handling and reliability. Peavey’s
ro rietary rotection circuitry, Sound
Guard, rovides long and medium-term
driver overload rotection when the
system is used full-range, or when it is bi-
am ed, without im airing musical
transients or dynamics on either the mid-
range or the tweeter. The crossover
rovides driver roll-off and rotection, as
well as driver EQ for the woofer, mid-
range and horn, the sum total is a clean,
clear and smooth res onse. High-quality,
reliable crossover com onents include
oly ro ylene ca acitors, and high current
inductors. The o timal integration of the
crossover with the selected drivers results
in a smooth frequency res onse from
54 Hz to 17 kHz. A crossover EQ switch is
rovided to tailor the res onse in the mid-
range and highs, roviding a nominally flat
frequency res onse osition, and an EQ
osition that ulls the mids and highs back
to hel kee bright rooms from
overloading, or to hel achieve a mellower
voicing for those a lications that refer it,
such as DJ use.
Des ite its com act dimensions for a
15"-based 3-way enclosure, this system
can ut out some very serious sound
levels, and take 1,000 Watts rogram of
clean am lifier ower, resulting in
excellent clarity and reliability.
Frequency Response
This measurement is useful in
determining how accurately a given unit
re roduces an in ut signal. The frequency
res onse of the SP 3X is measured at a
distance of 1-meter using a 1 Watt (into
the nominal im edance) swe t-sine in ut
signal. As shown in figure 1, the selected
drivers in the SP 3X combine to give a
smooth frequency res onse from 54 Hz to
17 kHz.
