Microprocessor Controlled Heat for Boiling, Mashing and Sparging

(Not suitable for fermenting unless alternative heat source is used)

INSTRUCTIONS PRIOR TO USE

The Electrim Bin comes ready assembled, but the security of the tap and element should be checked to avoid any possible leaks before use and after dismantling

for cleaning. The bin should be checked for leaks using cold water prior to using the heating element for the first time. The tap rubber ‘O’ ring should always be

fitted on the outside of the bin –tighten the nut on the inside fully and firmly but do not over tighten to avoid pinching the washer. The element rubber washer

should always be fitted on the inside of the bin. Always ensure that the element is level with the bottom of the bin and is not allowed to come into contact with

it. Again, fully and firmly tighten the element locking ring.

The control module should be connected to the element via the standard IEC kettle type plug, ensuring that it is fully inserted, and the thermostat sensor

should be inserted into the small copper tube located above the element. The rubber sleeve should be positioned over the tube and slid as far as possible up to

the metal gland. Do not plug the control module into the mains supply until water is covering the element, as permanent damage will be caused.

Please ensure plug is fully inserted into element to prevent poor connection and overheating

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Never allow the bin to be turned on unless the element is fully covered in liquid

If the unit is turned on inadvertently with the element dry it will be permanently damaged and the bucket may melt. Fill the bin with water to above the

minimum level mark before plugging in to the mains supply.

Standby Mode

The element can be temporarily switched off by putting the unit into Standby. Standby is turned On/Off by pressing Ufor 1 second. When in Standby mode the

display will go blank apart from a small red light in the bottom right hand corner.

Mashing

After filling with the required volume of water, plug in to the mains supply and switch on. The display module should illuminate to indicate that power is being

supplied it. The current sensor temperature will be displayed. The set temperature of the thermostat is adjusted by momentarily pressing ‘P’. ‘SP’ will be

displayed alternating with the current set temperature. This is factory set to 0. Use the ▲and ▼buttons to adjust the temperature. The maximum and

minimum settings are 101 and 0 respectively. Set the display to 60 and then momentarily press ‘P’. The display will revert to showing the current water

temperature and the red ‘Output’ light in the upper left hand corner of the display will illuminate. The water will rapidly heat to 60°c at which point the

thermostat will switch the element off. Due to latent heat in the element, the temperature will continue rising before dropping back to 59.9°c when the

element will switch on again. After a few on/off cycles the temperature will stabilise to within approximately ±1°c of the set temperature. When you wish to

increase the temperature, momentarily press ‘P’ and adjust to the desired setting, remembering to press ‘P’ again after the setting has been changed. The use

of a mashing/sparging bag is strongly recommended to stop the possibility of grain caking and burning on the element. Always stir the mixture to ensure an

even temperature. If a mashing bag is not being used, the ingredients must be added SLOWLY over at least 5 minutes, stirring continuously. When adding

ingredients such as molasses, it is advisable to put the unit in ‘Standby Mode’ by pressing and holding Ufor 1 second. This will switch the element off. The

display will go blank and a red light will be shown in the lower right hand corner. Add the ingredients in the area opposite the element to further reduce the risk

of burning them onto the element. The module is brought out of ‘Standby Mode’ by pressing and holding Uagain for 1 second, when the previous set

temperature will be resumed and the display will again show the current water temperature.

BOILING AND SIMMERING

! CAUTION –boiling liquid is dangerous. The bin should be used on the floor. Do not fill to the top of the bin. Do not stand the bin on chairs or tables. Keep

children and pets well away. Remember that hot liquids will soften plastic and therefore extreme care must be taken not to knock the tap or element to

avoid the possibility of causing leaks.

To achieve a vigorous rolling boil, adjust the set temperature to the maximum 105°c by momentarily pressing ‘P’ and using the ▲and ▼buttons, remembering

to press ‘P’ again after the setting has been changed. The time taken to boil 5 gallons of cold water is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes, or approximately 30

minutes from mashing temperature. To simmer, the set temperature should be adjusted to between 97-99°c. You can leave the liquid to simmer for any length

of time. If the lid is fitted, ensure the air hole is kept clear to allow steam to escape.

CLEANING

Always remove the plug from the main supply before cleaning. The tap and element can be removed for cleaning, but you may find it easier to thoroughly rinse

out with clean water and wipe dry rather than disturb the rubber washers. The bin should always be sterilised before use. The control module MUST NOT be

immersed in water for cleaning.

WIRING INSTRUCTIONS

The Appliance is fitted and tested with a standard 13 amp plug by the manufacturer. If the plug has been removed or needs replacing, proceed as follows:-

The wire that is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal that is marked with the letter N or coloured black. The wire that is coloured brown must be

connected to the terminal that is marked with the letter L or coloured red. The wire that is coloured green and yellow must be connected to the terminal that is

marked with the letter E or coloured green. If a 13 Amp plug is being used, a 13 Amp fuse must be fitted whether in the plug or the adapter or at the

distribution board.

The supply cord is a Type Y attachment. If this is damaged, the complete control unit must be returned to the manufacturer or appointed agent. If the moulded

plug has been removed, it should be destroyed to prevent a risk of electric shock.

GUARANTEE & PARTS REPLACEMENT

Your Electrim Bin is guaranteed for one year. Please retain proof of purchase date. In the event of component failure, it may be quicker for you to contact Peco

Services Ltd direct for a replacement, this will not affect your statutory rights with the dealer from which you purchased the Bin.

It will not be necessary for you to return the complete Bin, unless the Bin itself has split. For example, if the tap develops a leak, or the element fails remove it

and return to the supplier.
