The ACR-201- is an IEEE 802.11g compliant wireless Ethernet Bridge Station, with a
100/10-BaseT interface. It gives you a compact, portable, high-speed wireless
connection to a network or other Access Point. Using the RJ-45 Ethernet connector it
can connect to any other item with an Ethernet port: personal computer, network hub,
gaming console, printer, etc.

ACR-201-G User’s Guide
Revision 1.02 3/52
Driver-Free Installation
Most wireless devices of this type are based on either a PCMCIA or a USB interface, and
require the installation of a driver on the host device (IE: the computer or printer to
which the device is attached). The ACR-201- s Ethernet-based interface
allows for a true plug-and-play experience unavailable on other 802.11g
Station radios and requires no cumbersome installation of additional
drivers.
The ACR-201- driver-free feature allows the device to work
independent of hosted Operating Systems; this allows wireless
connectivity for any computing devices/systems with any OS, as long as
the device has an Ethernet communication port available. In a large
corporate environment, Ethernet-equipped workstations will benefit
greatly from this driverless feature because the IT department has one
less driver to install when upgrading an OS or when salvaging an OS
crash. Nonstandard computing/networking devices, such as printer
servers or POS (point of sales) machines may not even have an easy
method for the installation of such a driver for a wireless device, so the
ACR-201- is especially useful with these devices.
Access Point or Bridge Modes
By connecting a device or computer to the ACR-201- , you create a pure
802.11g connection to that device, and it becomes a wireless Access
Point. Additionally, the ACR-201- also supports the IP-Bridging
Mode, where multiple computers can share the wireless access to an
802.11g Access Point through a single ACR-201- Station radio. Using
Summary of Key Features of the ACR-201-G
•Plug and Play:
oNo driver installation is required for wireless
operation

ACR-201-G User’s Guide
Revision 1.02 4/52
this feature would (for example) allow multiple computers with wireless capability to
share a single printer, or wireless network hub, etc.
Security Protocols
The ACR-201- supports the WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access), TKIP (Temporal Key
Integrity Protocol), and WPA-PSK (Pre-Shared Key) security protocol in addition to the
standard 64- and 128-bit WEP encryption to provide the highest degree of security to
your wireless network. The device operates at a maximum speed of 54 Mbps and it is
backward compatible with 802.11b devices,
allowing inter-operability with an existing
wireless LAN infrastructure.
Setup and Installation
Setting the unit up to work with your system is
fast and easy, and covered in detail in Chapter 1:
Installation and Setup.
The ACR-201- features a compact design that
blends easily into a home/office environment
whether connected to a desktop computer, printer
or other device. The clip provided allows the
device to hang off of the back of your laptop lid in
as unobtrusive a manner as possible.
A built-in Configuration Utility program is
provided for you to configure your ACR-201- .
This Configuration Utility program is intended to
Sample Networking Setup, using 3 ACR-201-Gs and an Access Point

ACR-201-G User’s Guide

be a tool for network operators, or at least to be used under the supervision of your
network- or system-administrator. The program uses a simple HTML browser-based
interface (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape or Mozilla Firefox) and requires
no additional software installation to your computer.
In addition to the setup and configuration tools, the utility program can also be used
to monitor the communication conditions when the ACR-201- is in operation. Once
configured, the device runs self-sufficiently without the need for any additional driver
installation; the device can now simply be plugged into any device equipped with a RJ-
45 Ethernet port without ever being exposed to this Utility program. The details are
described in Chapter 2.
If you do not wish to configure the device’s settings, simply plug the ACR-201-
into your host device, and you can start using it right away. See Chapter 1: Installation
and Setup for more information.

Installing the ACR-201- is a simple procedure. There are three cables which may need
to be connected to the ACR: a black power cable, a hite ‘Straight-through’ Ethernet
cable, and a blue ‘Crossover’ Ethernet cable. Most users will only need the black and
the white cables. The ACR-201- can connect to any device’s Ethernet port via the
white or blue cables provided. See below for more information on these three cables.
The Black Cable: Power

ACR-201-G User’s Guide
Revision 1.02 8/52
Power is supplied to the ACR-201- via the black power cord provided in your
package. Depending on which version of the ACR-201- you purchased, you will
either have a USB power cord, which is plugged into a compliant USB-host port, or a
DC adapter which will plug directly into a DC wall socket. Please do not use any
power adapters which are not either supplied by, or endorsed by Pegasus Wireless
Corporation.
The White Cable: Straight-Through Ethernet Connection
This cable allows you to connect the ACR-201- directly to a host device’s
Ethernet port.
The Blue Cable: Cross-Over Ethernet Connection
You will use this cable if the IP Bridging feature is enabled. This allows you to
enable multiple devices to use the ACR-201- for access via a hub or a switch.
To do this, use the blue crossover UTP cable to connect the ACR-201- to the
switch or hub. Please see Chapter 1 for details on the IP Bridging feature.
Checking the Unit’s Status
After you have properly attached the power and Ethernet cables to the ACR-201-
, a row of LEDs will become illuminated. These Status LEDs give you an
indication of the status of the unit; please see the table below for further
explanation:

ACR-201-G User’s Guide
Revision 1.02 9/52
LED Status
Color
Light Pattern
ON Red Steady ON when power is supplied to the unit
RX Green Blinking ON, when receiving 802.11 signal
TX Red Blinking ON, when transmitting 802.11 signal
LINK Yellow Blinking ON, when communicating over the Ethernet port
Steady Off, when Ethernet connection is not present.
Troubleshooting
If the yellow “Link” LED stays off, then the Ethernet cable is not properly
communicating with your Ethernet port. Check your Ethernet cable connection,
making certain that the cable is seated well in both the ACR-201- ’s Ethernet port, as
well as in the host item’s Ethernet port. Remember that the white Straight-through
cable is used for connecting it to a host computer, printer, etc. and the blue Crossover
cable is used for connecting it to a network hub or switch.
If the yellow “Link” LED is on, but you still cannot get a signal to communicate
using the ACR-201- , first confirm that you are using the correct cables, and that they
are properly seated in their sockets. If you are using the correct cables, and they are
properly connected, but you still have difficulty getting a signal, try repositioning the
ACR-201- to a different location for better reception. By moving the unit closer to the
wireless source, and eliminating any disruption to the ‘line of sight’ between the two
wireless devices, you may be able to get a better send/receive signal.
You may also want to check if the unit is configured with the proper RF channel and
security settings by using the Configuration Utility software. Details on how to change
the RF channel and security settings can be found in Chapter 2.

ACR-201-G User’s Guide
Revision 1.02 10/52
For laptop users, once the ACR-201- radio unit works properly, the unit can be
secured at the top of the laptop display by the provided radio clip as shown in the
following figure.

Operating System Specific Instructions
For configuring your computer to match the IP subnet of your PC to that of the ACR-
201- radio, different steps must be taken on different operating systems. Typically, a
static IP address must be manually assigned to a computer and the user must have
administrative privilege to perform such an operation. Here are the
configuration steps involved on Windows and Macintosh. (Note that
due to variations in versions of Operating Systems these instructions
may be slightly different for you.)
Windows
Select “Start→Control Panel” and double click the “Network and Internet
Connections” icon. In the popped up window, right-click the “Local
Area Connection” icon and select the “Properties” tab. In the “Local
Area Connection Properties” dialog, choose “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)”
component in the “Components checked are used by this connection”
section and then click the “Properties” button. In the “Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) Properties” dialog which pops up next, turn on “Use the
following IP address” radio button, and enter the IP address, subnet
mask as well other information in the related fields for your computer.
Macintosh
Select “Apple→System Preferences…” and double click the “Network”
icon. In the popped up “Network” dialog, choose “Built-in Ethernet”
option for “Shows” dropdown menu and select the “TCP/IP” tab.

enter your IP address, subnet mask as well as other information in the related fields for
your computer.
Overview of the Configuration Software
When you open the program through your browser, you will see six tab links at the top
of the page. These pages are hard-wired directly into the ACR-201- device; you do not
need to be connected to the internet to use them. Details of each page follow. Note that
because of varying operating systems and browser software, the Configuration Utility
pages may look slightly different from the screenshots.
To access any of the six configuration pages, you will be prompted for a user name
and a password. When accessing a hosted Configuration page for the first time, use the
factory default settings listed on the previous page. If you change the
user name and/or password, please be sure to note the new information
down, in case you forget it in the future.
After you have made any changes to the device through this
interface, you will need to restart the ACR-201- unit using the
“Reboot” button at the bottom of the Admin page.
Don’t panic! If you make a change which causes the device to
malfunction, simply run the configuration tool again, go to the Admin
tab and click the “Reset” button to restore all the factory defaults. Then
Tip:
The “Admin”, “Wireless”, “Security”, and “Advanced” Configuration
pages all have “Save” and “Cancel” buttons. You must click the “Save”
button to apply the changed settings. If you do not click the “Save”
button all changes will be lost when you navigate to another page.
Please note that after you have made changes and saved the page,
you may have to manually click the “Refresh” or “Reload” button of your
web browser in order to see the updated Configuration page due to the
caching mechanism of the web browser. Alternately, you can change
the setting of the internet browser such that the browser would retrieve
new web pages instead of displaying the cached web pages.

go through and make your configuration changes again, making sure not to repeat or
compound the error.

The following information further explains the material found on each tabbed page of
the configuration utility. Please review it all carefully and thoroughly before making
any changes to the configuration of the ACR-201- device.
Admin
The “Admin” page is the default home page for the built-in web server.
On this page, users are able to change the settings which are used for
administration purposes. You should be careful about changing these
settings; if you have any concern about what you are about to do, please
consult your system- or network-administrator. The web page is
divided into four sections: Device Name, IP settings, Security,
Commands and Upgrade Firmware.
1. Device Name:
Device Name
This is the name that the ACR-201- will use to identify itself to external configuration
and IP-address-finding programs. This is not the same as the SSID. It is okay to leave
this blank if you are not using these programs.
Warning
Any changes to the IP settings should be contemplated
caref
ully, documented well, and made only after consulting your
system- or network-administrator. Failure to do so may result
in being unable to access the built-in configuration utility and/or
may affect network operation. Please be sure to note any new
IP, User Name, Password, SSID, etc. settings in the spaces
provided in the sidebar on the previous page.

2. IP Settings:
IP Address Mode
To get the IP settings from a DHCP server on your network, simply select ‘DHCP’.
Select ‘Static’ to use the IP settings specified on this page.
IP address
This shows the current IP address of the ACR-201- wireless device. This
allows the user to set a static IP address to the Wireless bridge station. This
IP address is only used for accessing the built-in configuration utility. In
order to access the utility, the computer must use an IP address on the same
subnet of the wireless bridge station. It is not necessary to change this IP
address to an address used by the Wireless Network, but it is okay to do so, if
desired. If you wish to do this, you will need to get an IP address from your
system- or network-administrator.
Subnet mask
The subnet mask specifies the network number portion of an IP address (the
factory default is 255.255.0.0). This button allows you or your network-
administrator to set the subnet mask. If you changed the IP address earlier,
you may need to change this setting as well. Please ask your system- or
network-administrator for the correct subnet mask.
Gateway
This shows the IP address of the ateway that connects you to the Internet;
clicking this button allows you to set the default ateway address. If you

ACR-201-G User’s Guide
Revision 1.02 16/52
changed the IP address earlier, you may need to change this setting also. Please ask
your system- or network-administrator for the correct ateway.
3. Security
User Name
This is the user name that you must type when logging in to the Configuration Utility.
Password
This is the password that you must type in order to log in to the Configuration Utility.
Please be sure to write down your password; if you lose it there is no way to retrieve it
without resetting the entire unit. For confirmation purposes, you must enter the same
password into both boxes.
Once you’ve set the new password, the Configuration Utility will verify the login name
and password before giving access to the other hosted pages. Each time the user name or
password is changed, the Configuration Utility will prompt you for the new user name
and password.
4. Commands
Reboot Bridge
Clicking on this button will reboot the wireless bridge station with your changes. Once
you’ve rebooted with this button, all changes will be in effect. If you then make further
changes, you will have to Save and Reboot again to have them take effect.
Tip
At the end of the Security
section, you will see the “Save”
button. You must click on that
for your changes to take effect!

Reset to Factory Defaults
Click this button to reset the device to its factory default settings. This button allows
the user to reset all the settings to the factory defaults (not just the fields on this Admin
page!). Please be careful: once the Reset is completed, the current settings are all over-
written. There is no way to get back to your current settings unless you remember them
or have written them all down somewhere. It is always a good idea to note down the
current settings before you change them.
5. Upgrade Firmware
This allows the user to upgrade the firmware for ACR 201- . To update your firmware,
first go to the support section of our website
(http://pegasuswirelesscorp.com/support/downloads.html). Select the firmware to
update and download it to your computer. Once you’ve done that, click on “Browse”
(from within the ACR-201- ’s configuration utility) to select the correct firmware file,
then click on upload to complete the upgrade.

Template
On this page, the users can save all the current settings that are under Admin,
Wireless, Security and Advanced to a template. This template is helpful for
programming multiple devices with identical settings. It also allows you to obtain
the current settings if you accidentally click the “Reset” button. After a template is
created, only the IP address, subnet mask and gateway are modifiable (unalterable
features will be shaded out). This feature is used to assign a new IP address to the
next device that is being programmed. There are two sections on this page: Create
Template and Launch Template.
1. Create Template
Create Template
Click the “Create Adapter Settings Template” button to save your current settings to
the directory. The template saved should look like the screenshot nearby. In the
administration section of the template, the user has to enter the current IP addresses
of the intended ACR-201- unit in the “Device Current IP Address” field. The
desired new IP address is shown in the “Device Target IP address” box. When you
click the “Save settings template to adapter” button this IP address will be
automatically programmed into the intended ACR-201- unit.
