3 Product escription
PePWave Surf is a feature-ric Wi-Fi CPE wit WPA, WPA2 and 802.1x supplicant support.
It is designed to act as a Wireless router and connects LAN users wit a Wireless Broadband
Internet Service (suc as Citywide Wi-Fi).
It associates to a service provider and aut enticates using 802.1x (if needed) on start up.
Upon successful association and aut entication, it will acquire an IP address from t e
service provider using DHCP. A DHCP server is built-in on its LAN port. Network Address
Translation is performed for all outbound connections. T us it supports multiple terminals
to access t e Internet simultaneously.

3.2 Hardware Setup
3.2.1 Surf Indoor Series
1. Attac t e provided antenna to t e left most antenna connector
2. Connect t e LAN port to t e computer’s Et ernet port wit an Et ernet cable.
3. Connect t e end of t e included power adapter to t e power socket (labeled “DC 5V”)
on PePWave Surf.
4. Power on t e power adaptor.

4 Using the PePWave Surf
You s ould set up your computer’s LAN interface to obtain an IP address automatically. If
you do so, you s ould ave set it up correctly.
In order to do so, select t e “Start” menu, “Control Panel” and t en “Network Connections”.
Rig t click on t e “Local Area Connection” icon, c oose “Properties”, double-click on t e
item “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” from t e list. On t e screen, just set it as follows:

4.1 First Time Setup
On your PC, start a web browser, e.g. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, etc. Visit an
Internet web site. If you are not associated to an access point, you s ould be redirected to
a logon page. Or you can go also go to t is URL

Click t e “Advanced Config” button to enter t e parameters of t e access point to associate
to. You s ould see t is screen:
In t e field “SSID” under Wireless Settings, input t e access point’s SSID (sometimes it is
called t e “network name”). According to t e setting of t e Access Point you are
associating to, you may c oose a different “Aut entication setting”.
If “Static WEP key” or “WPA/WPA2-Personal” is selected for Aut entication, input t e
Encryption Key field as well. (T ere are also options of “802.1x wit dynamic WEP key” and
“WPA/WPA2-Enterprise”. You do not need to use t ese settings unless instructed to do so
by your ISP.)
Click t e “Save” button at t e bottom to complete.
You can now click t e “Connect” link on t e top bar and t en click t e “Connect” button to
associate wit t e access point.

and open a new one to start web browsing.

4.2 Settings etails
LAN Interface: To configure t e LAN interface’s IP address and subnet mask.
DHCP Server: To configure and enable t e built-in DHCP server or not. If enabled, t e IP
address range can be configured.
Wireless Settings:
SSID: To configure t e SSID / ESSID / Network Name of t e wireless network to associate
to.
Radio Mode: It allows t e user to c oose between radio modulations support. E.g.
802.11b/g, 802.11g only, 802.11b, etc. T e available settings depend on t e Wi-Fi module
installed on t e device.
it Rate: To fix t e 802.11 transmit bit rate. Available options depend on t e Radio Mode
c osen. If “auto” is c osen, t e device will c oose t e best bit rate dynamically and
automatically.
Authentication: Available options are Open, Static WEP Key, 802.1x wit dynamic WEP
key, WPA/WPA2-Enterprise and WPA/WPA2-Personal. T e selection s ould be according to
t e setting of t e access point you are associating to. Data transferred are encrypted under
all modes except in Open mode. W en Static WEP Key or WPA/WPA2-Personal is c osen,
you s ould enter an encryption key in t e Encryption Key field. (You do not need to use
802.1x and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise unless instructed to do so by your ISP.)
Preferred AP: T e MAC address of a preferred access point can be entered ere. W en
t e preferred access point is found and its signal strengt is ig er t an t e “Min Signal
Strengt ”, it will connect to t is preferred access point, no matter t e ot er access points
are found even t ey ave ig er signal strengt or t e same SSID.

IP Settings: T e IP address can be obtained automatically or configured manually. If you
c oose to manually configure t e IP address for your unit, enter t e fields “IP Address”,
“Subnet Mask”, “Default Gateway”, “Preferred DNS Server” and “Alternate DNS Server”.
MTU Size: You may also set t e MTU Size to increase t e data packet size your Surf can
andle at one time.
AP Settings: T ese settings apply only to t e PePWave Surf AP model, and configure t e
properties of t e Integrated Wi-Fi Access Point. T e AP Settings will be covered in detail in
t e subsequent section Integrated Wi-Fi Access Point Configuration.
WAI redirection: If t e device is not connected to an access point, and t e user is
accessing an Internet web site, t e settings control w et er to redirect t e web access to
t e web admin interface page or not. If t is is disabled and t e device is not connected, t e
browser will s ow a web access error message. T e user can still access t e web admin
interface by accessing to t e device’s LAN IP address. By default, t e LAN IP address is set
as ttp://192.168.20.1 .
Web Password Protection: Sets t e password to protect t e web user interface.
Restore default settings: To restore t e device to default settings. W en t is option is
clicked, default settings will be restored and t e unit will be restarted.
Reboot: To restart t e device.

4.3 Integrated Wi-Fi Access Point Configuration
Integrated Wi-Fi Access Point is configured via t e CPE Setup tab. T e following sections
will provide information as a guide t roug t e configuration. T is session is not applicable
for PePWave Surf DX series.
4.3.1 Available Access Point Settings
T e available Access Point (AP) settings for t e Integrated Wi-Fi Access Point functionality
are as follows:
Disable
Integrated Home Wi-Fi Access Point functionality is disabled
Configure Manually
Manual configuration of t e SSID, Aut entication, and Encryption Key values
corresponding to t e Access Point.
Configure Automatically
T e SSID, Aut entication, and Encryption Key values corresponding to t e Access
Point are automatically configured to be t e same as t e respective values t at
correspond to Citywide Wi-Fi.

In Manual Configuration mode, t e SSID is manually entered.
Authentication can be one of t ree configurable values:
Open
For Open Aut entication Mode, no Encryption Key is necessary.
Static WEP Key
For Static WEP Key Aut entication Mode, a 64- or 128-bit Encryption Key is
required, and can be entered in eit er an ASCII or HEX representation.
Static WEP Ke Authentication Configuration
WPA/WPA -Personal
For WPA/WPA -Personal Aut entication Mode, an Encryption Key, of at least 8
c aracters, is required.
WPA/WPA2-Personal Authentication Configuration
Broadcast SSID can be one of two configurable values:
Enable
T e configured SSID will be broadcast suc t at it can be detected by an SSID scan.
Disable
T e configured SSID will not be broadcast suc t at it cannot be detected by an
SSID scan. In order to connect wit t e access point, t e SSID needs to be known
by t e client.

Wit t e Access Point Configuration set to Configure Automatically, t e SSID,
Authentication, and Encryption Key values of t e Integrated Home Wi-Fi Access Point
will be configured to be t e same as in t e Wireless Settings section.
T is configuration mode is effectively equivalent to directly connecting 802.1b/g devices on
t e customers’ premises wit Citywide Wi-Fi.

Important Note:
In t e Wireless Settings section, if Authentication is set to eit er 80 .1x with dynamic
WEP key or WPA/WPA -Enterprise, t en t e Configure Automatically option of t e
Access Point Configuration becomes unavailable, because t e Integrated Home Wi-Fi Access
Point functionality currently does not support aut entication via t e 802.1x wit dynamic
WEP key and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise met ods.

4.4 Test the Setup
To test to setup, you can now go to t e PePWave Surf’s Main page, enter t e user name
and password. T e realm (t e text box next to t e “@” sign) value can be left empty. T en
click t e Connect button.
