Introduction
This manual describes features and services of the PhoneGnome service. It applies to all
subscribers of the PhoneGnome services, including those with the PhoneGnome hardware
(known as the “PhoneGnome box”) and those using only a web browser with their standard
phone and/or PC.
Certain features and capabilities are only applicable to PhoneGnome users using the
PhoneGnome box. The following conventions are used in this document.
Theicon indicates that the specified feature or service requires the PhoneGnome box.
General Information
PhoneGnome is a service that lets users take advantage of Voice-over-IP (VoIP) calling and
features using their current telephone or PC/Mac. Unlike other services that require all users to
use the same method of communications, PhoneGnome lets each user use the method they
prefer:
•Use our simple web-activated technology to place calls without the need for any software.
You and your friend simply activate an account - it's free - and you can talk to each other free
using your regular phone and you don't need to be online to receive free calls, only to initiate
calls.
•Use our Free PC software if you're more comfortable using a PC to make calls (and get an
even wider free calling area).
•Purchase the amazing PhoneGnome Box and get more free features and the ultimate in
convenience.
Your friends can use the method of calling they prefer, while you use the method you prefer.
There are no handles, nicknames, or new phone numbers to learn. You just call the phone
numbers you already know.
Service Note
PhoneGnome is not a replacement telephone service. The PhoneGnome box must
remain connected to an active telephone service in order to access 911 services.

1 Getting Started
1.1 Setting Up The PhoneGnome Box
Follow the instructions in the PhoneGnome Quick Setup Guide to connect the PhoneGnome
box for the first time. The Quick Setup Guide is included with the PhoneGnome box or may be
downloaded at the following address: http://www.phonegnome.com/quickstart.pdf
For setup of a PhoneGnome box outside the US/Canada, connect the PhoneGnome box per the
Quick Setup Guide and then follow the instructions at the following website to complete the
hardware setup: http://my.phonegnome.com/intlsetup
1.2 Registering on the My PhoneGnome website
The My PhoneGnome owner portal provides a desktop interface for working with your
PhoneGnome account. You can manage contacts, choose preferences, and perform other tasks
that may be easier to do on a PC than on a phone.
1.2.1 PhoneGnome phone number
Your PhoneGnome phone number is the phone number you wish to use with your
PhoneGnome account.
This is one of the wonderful things about PhoneGnome: you continue to use the phone numbers
you already have; you don't need to learn a new special PhoneGnome number -- just keep using
the phone numbers already know!
If you have the PhoneGnome box (hardware) it is the phone line you plugged into your
PhoneGnome LINE jack.
When using the My PhoneGnome website, this number is your login username. Select the
country from the pull-down options and enter the phone number without the country code, and
without any prefix or punctuation (no spaces, hyphens, etc) For the US/Canada, this is simply
your 10-digit telephone number.
1.2.1.1 PhoneGnome accounts for numbers outside the US/Canada
The My PhoneGnome site must be configured with the international form of the number. Either
enter the number, less the country code (no leading zeros) or enter the full international number
using the +number format as one does when placing a mobile call.
Specifically, you must consider how the number is called from outside your country. For example,
if your country code is 44 and people call from from the U.S. by dialing 011448444848908 then
the number you must provide on the My PhoneGnome setup is that number as dialed from the
U.S., with the 01144 stripped off. In this case, the telephone number used on the
my.phonegnome.com site would be all digits after 01144, or 8444848908 after selecting the
United Kingdom, from the pull-down list. You can also enter the number as simply
+448444848908.
This number is used to setup your PhoneGnome service and ensures the PhoneGnome system
adjusts for normal dialing in your region (so in your country, you will dial as normal, the same way
as always). The "international" form of the number described above applies only when using the

4
my.phonegnome.com site and when setting up a PhoneGnome for international use, not for
when dialing with the PhoneGnome connected phone or via your My PhoneGnome account.
1.2.2 Register a PhoneGnome Box for use in the US/Canada:
To register for the PhoneGnome owner portal, you complete these steps:
1. When you visit the http://my.phonegnome.com web site, enter information about
yourself, including the telephone number connected to the LINE port of the
PhoneGnome box, your name, and email address.
2. PhoneGnome will send an email to the email address you specify containing a PIN code.
3. Follow the instructions in the above email to register your PhoneGnome phone.
1.2.3 Register a PhoneGnome Box for use outside the US/Canada
By completing the instructions at http://my.phonegnome.com/intlsetup an account is
automatically created on the My PhoneGnome site. A valid email address is required.
1.2.4 Create a My PhoneGnome account without the PhoneGnome box
To create a PhoneGnome account, you complete these steps:
1. When you visit the http://my.phonegnome.com web site, enter information about
yourself, including the telephone number as described above, your name, and email
address.
2. PhoneGnome will send an email to the email address you specify containing a PIN code
and verification link.
3. Follow the instructions in the above email to complete the creation of your PhoneGnome
account.
When you click the verification link contained in the email described above at step 2,
PhoneGnome will call you at the telephone number you provided (that of the PhoneGnome
account you are creating) to verify that the number is valid. Therefore you must supply a valid
email address and working telephone number to create a PhoneGnome account.
2 Call Functions
This chapter explores how to make a call, how to answer a call, and the functions available during
a call.
2.1 Making a call
PhoneGnome uses ordinary real telephone numbers, even to place pure Internet calls that never
traverse the traditional phone network.
To place a call with PhoneGnome, you dial the person's telephone number, even when calling
another PhoneGnome member. PhoneGnome knows what numbers belong to PhoneGnome
members, and which ones don't.
In Short... Regardless of where you live, or what kind of PhoneGnome account you have, to place
a call, you dial using the normal calling conventions for your location. You do not need to learn a
new dialing mechanism.

5
2.1.1 For users within the US/Canada
When entering a telephone number, you dial the number using the dialing method for your
specific local region. So in the U.S., one generally dials 1-areacode-number such as
14085551234. To place an international call from the U.S. one dials 011 following by the country-
code, then area code, etc.
For PhoneGnome members with the PhoneGnome box, calls can be placed using 7-digit dialing
or any other local dialing conventions, and the call will be placed via your local phone service
provider (for additional options and settings see Local Dialing Rules below).
2.1.2 For users outside the US/Canada
If you are outside the U.S. you dial using the dialing conventions for your specific location. So, for
example, in most of Europe, to dial a number in the same country, one dials 0 followed by the
number. To dial a number in a different country, in most European regions, one dials 00 followed
by the country code, followed by the country-specific area/city/number. For example, to call a
U.S. number using a PhoneGnome account associated with a European number, one might dial
0014085551234 to call the above number.
For PhoneGnome members with the PhoneGnome box outside the US, local calls can be placed
using any local dialing conventions (i.e. without the leading 0 prefix) and the call will be placed via
your local phone service provider.
2.1.3 Web-based Quick Call
Sign into your My PhoneGnome account. On the
home page, in the upper right, is the Quick Call
feature.
Enter the number you wish to call, exactly how you
would dial the number on your telephone, and click
the CALL button.
Your telephone will ring. When you answer, you
will be connected to the number dialed.
2.1.4 Making A Call Using the Phonebook
Click PhoneBook on your My
PhoneGnome page. Click the
telephone number or the phone
icon for a contact to initiate a call
to the given contact
2.1.5 Speed Dialing
Each contact entered into your My PhoneGnome Phonebook (contact list) is assigned a speed
dial code to make it easy to call your contacts rapidly via the standard handset rather than signing
into the web and using click-to-dial. To view the speed-dial code for a given contact, simply hover
the mouse over the name of the contact on the My PhoneGnome Phonebook page (contact
listing screen).
Users of the PhoneGnome box can also automatically dial frequently called numbers with the
touch of two buttons. To program, press *74. Dial the single digit code under which the number is
to be stored (2-9). Dial the complete number to be stored just as if you were going to dial it
yourself. Listen for Confirmation tone (two short beeps). Hang up or repeat the sequence.

6
2.1.6 Advanced PhoneGnome Dialing Capabilities
In addition to the convenience of dialing plain phone numbers, advanced PhoneGnome users
may appreciate the following advanced dialing capabilities of the PhoneGnome service.
2.1.6.1 Calling SIP Addresses
To dial a SIP address, simply enter the SIP address in URI form such as sip:user@service (for
example sip:joe@example.com). Such SIP addresses can be called via the “Quick Call" feature,
entered into your Contacts and called via click-to-dial, and even used as find-me/follow-me
numbers.
2.1.6.2 Calling Users on Skype
Since Skype handles are names rather than numbers, dialing a Skype user is normally
impractical with only a numeric telephone handset. You can dial a Skype user using the My
PhoneGnome website by entering that user in a special URI form: skype:username
You can also place a call to a plain phone number using your SkypeOut service by dialing
**75number
Note: Skype calling requires the PhoneGnome box and free GnomeLink for Skype feature
activated.
2.1.6.3 Calling Users On Popular IM Services
The following may be used to call your friends on these popular instant messaging services:
To Call This Service
Use This Format
GoogleTalk (Gtalk)
gtalk:username@domain.com
MSN/Live Messenger
msn:username@domain.com
Yahoo! Messenger
yahoo:username@domain.com
These codes can be used in the Quick Call box or they can be added to the your Contacts to
place click-to-dial calls and where they can be dialed with their assigned speed-dial code.
2.1.6.4 Call Home
If using SoftGnome softphone capability with your PhoneGnome service, you can quickly "call
home" by dialing **466 (**HOM). When dialed on the SoftGnome softphone client, it rings to the
"home" number. When dialed from "Home", it rings to the SoftGnome softphone client. So when
travelling, you can call from your PC to your home free, simply by dialing **466.
2.1.6.5 Force Call via Home Phone Service
Dial ##number to force a number to be placed directly using the phone service connected to the
PhoneGnome box without any processing of the call.
2.1.7 3-Way Calling
3-Way Calling lets you talk to two people at different phone numbers at the same time. To use,
dial a number, press and release the flash button to get a second dial tone, then dial the second
number. Press and release the button again to connect the two calls together. Be sure to hang up

7
for 5 seconds between calls if you don't want to make a 3 way call. 3-Way Calling allows three
PhoneGnome users to conduct a totally free 3-way conference call.
Note: Requires activation of Internet Calling Service to conduct 3-way conference with more than one PSTN user.
2.1.8 Attended Call Transfer
Attended Call Transfer lets you transfer a caller to another phone. While in a call with the party to
be transferred: Press the switch hook or flash button on the phone to place the party on hold.
Listen for three short tones followed by dial tone. Dial the number to which you will transfer the
caller. Stay on the line until the called number answers. Announce the call. Press the switch hook
or flash button adding the held party to the call. Hang up to connect the two parties and transfer
the call.
Note: Requires activation of Internet Calling Service to transfer incoming call from existing phone line to another PSTN
destination.
2.1.9 Unattended Call Transfer
Unattended Call Transfer lets you transfer a caller to another phone (sometimes called Blind
Transfer). While in a call with the party to be transferred: Press the switch hook or flash button on
the phone to place the party on hold. Press *98 then dial the number to which you will transfer the
caller. The call is transferred when a complete number is entered. You will hear a short
confirmation tone, followed by regular dial tone.
2.2 Answering a call
The PhoneGnome user can receive calls from the PSTN (connected telephone service) or from
other PhoneGnome subscribers. When the telephone rings, pick up the handset and begin
talking. To end the call, hang-up the telephone.
2.2.1 Caller Id with Name
Caller-ID uses a screen on a display either on your phone or other Caller ID device. It lets you
see who's calling before you answer by showing the name and telephone number of the caller. It
also keeps a record of the names and numbers of the people who called - even those who did not
leave a message.
When you receive a call, the caller's name and number will appear after the first ring - unless the
caller has chosen to block it or the number is unavailable.
Note: Requires service from phone company to receive Caller ID for calls arriving via existing
phone line. Always works for Internet calls.
2.2.2 Call Waiting
This feature signals you that a call is coming in while you are on another call. This is separate
from the Call Waiting service provided by your phone company. It allows you to receive a call
from your existing phone line while on a call placed over the Internet, or vice versa.
While on the phone, a beep tone alerts you to another call. Press and release the flash button to
find out who is calling. Press and release the button again to return to your original call. To turn

8
off Call Waiting for a single call, press *70 before making the call. To turn off Call Waiting during a
call you must use Three-Way Calling, press and quickly release the flash button, dial *70 and
press and release the button again to return to your call. See Three-Way Calling for details. To
turn off Call Waiting permanently, press *56. You will hear a confirmation tone signaling your
request to cancel Call Waiting has been accepted. To turn Call Waiting back on, press *57.
Note: Requires disabling of Call Waiting service from the phone company. PhoneGnome is not compatible with Call
Waiting service on your existing phone line.
2.2.3 Anonymous Call Blocking
Anonymous Call Blocking lets you block incoming calls that do not reveal the caller’s Caller ID.
To Activate Press *77. To deactivate, Press *87. See also Telemarketer Screening for more
advanced screening options.
2.2.4 Do Not Disturb
Do Not Disturb lets you block all incoming calls. To Activate Press *78. To deactivate, Press *79.
2.2.5 Call Forwarding
Call Forwarding lets you send your calls wherever you go, even your cell phone. To turn on,
press *72. You will hear an alternate dial tone. Enter the number you want your calls forwarded
to. You will hear an acknowledgement tone. Hang up and calls to your number will ring to the
forwarded destination. To turn off, press *73. While forwarding is active, when you lift the receiver
of your PhoneGnome phone, you will hear a multiple tone indicator to remind you that forwarding
is active. Also see Find Me/Follow Me for advanced forwarding capabilities.
Note: Requires activation of Internet Calling Service to forward incoming call from existing phone line to another PSTN
destination.
3 Using the My PhoneGnome Web Portal
Once you have activated a My PhoneGnome account as described in Chapter 1 above, you sign
in by visiting http://my.phonegnome.com with your web browser. Log in with your phone
number and PIN.
3.1 Home Page
When you first sign in to the my.phonegnome.com website, you arrive at the home page. This
page displays general information about your PhoneGnome services. It also provides the “Quick
Call” feature for placing calls using your PhoneGnome account.
At its core, the phone is a tool we use to converse and connect with one another. A large
percentage of these interactions are with the same people, friends, loved ones, and business
associates. Long before wikis, blogs, and social networking sites came along, people were
maintaining their real-world social networks, and the phone has been, and continues to be, a
powerful tool in building and maintaining those relationships.
Historically, interactions using a telephone have been simple voice interactions, mostly on a one-
to-one basis. With PhoneGnome 2.0 we are taking steps toward more sophisticated multi-modal

9
interactions. PhoneGnome users can now create their own profiles, invite friends, send voice
messages via email, and manage contacts on-line.
The Telco 2.0 blog says it well when they say “the next generation of communications is social,
contextual and collaborative.” The new My PhoneGnome home page for PhoneGnome 2.0 shows
a few steps in this direction.
The information displayed will vary depending on your particular usage history. Generally, what
you’ll find here are things of interest to you, updates to your PhoneGnome social network. It’s
personal and relevant.
3.1.1 Edit Profile
One particularly interesting feature here is the new Profile Data. You can use this to provide a
message of the day, to show your mood, announcements, and that kind of thing. Your profile will
be visible to those in your PhoneGnome network and changes you make will be seen when they
sign into their My PhoneGnome site. This can be a handy and fun way to give more information
about yourself or your situation. To change your profile information simply click the Change
Profile link on the My PhoneGnome home page.
3.1.2 The My PhoneGnome navigation bar
The My PhoneGnome navigation bar is displayed across the top of the screen, as shown below:
Click a tab to select that page.
Note: Voicemail tab only appears when Premium Voicemail feature is activated.
3.2 Phonebook
The My PhoneGnome Phonebook provides a mechanism to store your contacts. To add a
contact, click the [Add Contact] link. The following page will be displayed.

10
Enter the name, phone number, an optional type classification (home, office, mobile, etc.) and
optional email address.
Any phone number that can be dialed from the phone can be placed into the on-line Phone Book
and called using click-to-dial, not just VoIP destinations.
SIP addresses can also be entered into the Phonebook to allow convenient free calling to any
SIP user in the world (see 2.1.6 Advanced PhoneGnome Dialing Capabilities above).
Add contacts using any standard web browser and click the phone icon to place a call.
The following icons are displayed for each contact:
Icon
Action
Edit contact details
Delete contact (confirmation will be displayed first)
Send a voice message to the contact
Call the contact
3.2.1 Remote Click-to-Dial
Change the Remote Click-to-Dial Location to enable remote use of your PhoneGnome from any
phone.
Enter a number for the remote location exactly as dialed by your Long Distance Internet Calling
Service (See Low Cost Internet Calling below). After setting a Remote Click-to-Dial Location,
when you use the click-to-dial feature or send a voice message, PhoneGnome will ring the
desired Remote Click-to-Dial Location, and then place the call or send the voice message using
PhoneGnome.
3.3 Find People
This feature can be used to find friends and contacts. Enter the name and city/state or country of
the person you are looking for and PhoneGnome will return a list of matches. The following icons
will be displayed for matching contacts:
Icon
Action
Send voice message (if email address is available)

11
Add to Phonebook (contacts)
Call now
Note: when adding contacts to your My PhoneGnome Phonebook, the phone number is provided
in a generic form, not necessarily how you dial. So when you add the contact to your personal
contact list, you should adjust the number field for how you would normally dial that number. This
primarily applies to International numbers but can also apply to local numbers.
3.4 Settings
The Settings page can be used to change your personal information associated with your
account, such as name and email address.
3.4.1 Timezone
The Settings page is also used for configuring your timezone. When PhoneGnome sets up your
account, it tries to determine the proper timezone. The Settings page can be used to override the
calculated timezone in cases where PhoneGnome was unable to determine the proper settings.
PhoneGnome also assumes that Daylight Savings Time is observed and provides a setting in
cases where Daylight Savings Time is not observed. PhoneGnome automatically adjusts for
Daylight Savings Time, if applicable.
3.4.2 Outbound Call Indications
PhoneGnome normally provides spoken voice indications when placing a call to indicate how the
call is being routed (local telephone service, free peer-to-peer Internet call, or optional low-cost
Internet telephone service). It is highly recommended that users leave these indications enabled
to assist in troubleshooting and so you know which calls are free. These indications can be
disabled on the Settings page, if desired, but in that case you will not know which calls are free
and which aren’t.
3.4.3 Advanced Settings
Advanced settings are available for rare specialized cases. Change these values only with the
advice of PhoneGnome technical support.
Warning: If you change these settings without explicit instructions from PhoneGnome
Support, you do so at your own risk. Improper use of these advanced settings can
render your PhoneGnome inoperable. You could miss calls, outgoing calls may fail,
voice quality may be degraded and other harmful effects may result from misuse of
these advanced settings. If you change these settings without explicit instructions from
PhoneGnome Support, please be advised that if you require technical support to
diagnose or repair problems that turn out to be a result of unapproved settings changes,
you will be subject to up to $100 service fees or termination of your PhoneGnome
service.

12
3.4.3.1 PSTN Line Gain
Generally, volume issues on PSTN calls (those calls using your local phone service) are related
to the wiring or some electrical condition on the LINE side of the PhoneGnome box.
If the volume of PSTN calls is too low, try adjusting the Gain toward louder by one click and then
click Save and try the phone that way for a day or several calls at least (to give PhoneGnome
time to auto-adjust to new setting). If you need it louder, try one click again. Please do not adjust
by more than one click at a time, and wait a day or at least several calls before making additional
changes.
Raising the Gain (volume) too high can have negative consequences, so you'll have to see how it
works for you. If there are any negative consequences (such as scratchy or distorted audio),
you'll probably want to focus on the wiring (there may be a bad connection, a loose wire, a place
where water is getting in, etc.) . PhoneGnome is much more sensitive to electrical conditions on
you telephone like than a simple analog phone, so improper wiring or other problems on the your
telephone wiring may be at fault, even if you cannot hear anything unusual on your other phones.
If you experience echo on PSTN calls, try reducing the gain, one click at a time, waiting a day
(several calls), before making further adjustments.
3.4.3.2 Base SIP Port
This is the first port in the pair of ports used by the PhoneGnome box. The value should be an
even number. If you have more than one PhoneGnome box on the same LAN, you may need to
have each use a different base port. Even values between 5060 (the default) and 5090 are
suggested. Do not change the default setting without instructions from PhoneGnome technical
support.
3.4.3.3 Local Dialing Rules
Local dialing rules define how PhoneGnome identifies what calls should always be directed via
your home phone service (via the phone service attached to the PhoneGnome box LINE port).
The default (for PhoneGnomes in North America) is 7-digit numbers are the only numbers treated
as 'local' (direct dial local) and all other calls are eligible for network routing/processing.
The Custom setting says to use the simple distance-based algorithm to determine local calls
(default 12 mile radius, see Local Calling Radius below). If 10-digit dialing is required in your
area, then selecting the Custom setting will generally produce the desired results
3.4.3.4 Local Calling Radius OR Set Local Calling Prefixes
When the Custom setting is activated as described under Local Dialing Rules above, the Local
Calling Radius can be used to automatically let PhoneGnome determine if a call is local, and
should therefore be placing using your local telephone service, based on the distance of the
called number. While this is not 100% accurate and can make the wrong choice for calls on the
fringes, it works perfectly adequately for 99.9% of PhoneGnome users and permits a simple
solution for 10-digit dialing. If you make a very large number of calls to numbers that are on the
fringes, then you might want to adjust the radius to ensure those calls are directed the way you
prefer.
If you want to fine tune each and every local prefix, or, in other words, explicitly set every prefix
that you want to classify as local, you can use the Set Local Calling Prefixes advanced option
described below. However, once you click Set Local Calling Prefixes (even once) the Local
Calling Radius setting is ignored and you will then and forever afterwards have to manually
maintaining the list of calling prefixes that you want treated as local. The radius setting will no
longer be in effect and will be forever ignored. The Set Local Calling Prefixes feature is

available for extreme cases for advanced users only. We discourage its use generally -- most of
us don't have the time and it's not necessary since the above distance-based automatic
calculation provides a much simpler solution. If you use Set Local Calling Prefixes and later
require technical support as a result, you may incur additional service fees or risk cancellation of
your PhoneGnome service.
3.4.3.5 7-digit Calls
This option how PhoneGnome handles 7-digit calls for North American users. The default is
Always PSTN but one can change the setting to Enabled for VOIP in which case 7-digit calls get
the same treatment as 10 or 11-digit calls. One can always still override any treatment and send
directly to the local POTS line by dialing ## and then the number.
3.5 Features
The Features page offers a number of free and premium services and features for use with your
PhoneGnome account. The specific features and services available will change as new services
are introduced.
The Features page is a door to your own next-generation, highly personalized telephony
experience. Therefore this manual devotes an entire chapter, Chapter 4 Detailed Feature
Descriptions (page 16 below), to this important subject.
3.6 Call Analysis
PhoneGnome helps you assess your calling behavior and make intelligent choices about service
options most appropriate to your needs. The Call Analysis page provides summary information
and, if available, a cost savings analysis.
This information can help you choose between service plans, such as helping you determine
whether a flat-rate plan or per-minute plan is best for you, based on your actual call history.
The Call Analysis page provides sub-navigation for access to call logs, recorded calls, and other
functions described in the sections that follow.

3.6.1 Received Calls
Need to know when a client last called? It's in your PhoneGnome call logs — dated and time
stamped. Your Call Logs are accessible from the moment you connect PhoneGnome and are
always available from any web browser.
Call logs provide information on the type of call (e.g., Internet, landline, etc.), activity (missed,
etc.), the length of the call, and the date and time. You can use this information for easy and
accurate cost analysis.

4 Detailed Feature Descriptions
The Features page represents a marketplace of Enhanced Voice Services available to
PhoneGnome subscribers and includes features and services provided directly by PhoneGnome
as well as services and features provided by third parties.
In general, click Activate link to activate or subscribe to a given feature/service. Some features
have settings or options that can be managed with the feature’s Edit or Settings link. Most
features have on-line help or information via a Learn More link or a separate help link on the
settings page for the given feature.
4.1 Core PhoneGnome Features
The features listed below are fundamental to the PhoneGnome service and are operated directly
by PhoneGnome.
4.1.1 Intl Call Blocking
Enabling the Intl Call Blocking feature prevents International calls from being placed using your
local telephone service. With Intl Call Blocking mode enabled, PhoneGnome will only place
such calls when they can be completed FREE over the Internet or via your selected Internet
Calling Service
4.1.2 LD Call Blocking
Enabling the LD Call Blocking feature prevents long-distance calls from being placed using your
local telephone service. With LD Call Blocking mode enabled, PhoneGnome will only place such
calls when they can be completed FREE over the Internet or via your selected Internet Calling
Service.
4.1.3 Telemarketing Screening
The PhoneGnome Privacy Mode feature (or Telemarketer Screening) automatically answers your
phone line for calls that do not provide Caller ID information, plays the 3 tone disconnect SIT
code used by phone companies to indicate a number is disconnected, followed by a "legal
message" instructing the telemarketer to remove your name from all telemarketing lists.
Friends and others can press "1" to ring through. Telemarketers that violate the "legal message"
can suffer harsh penalties.
Privacy Mode only applies when no caller ID is provided. Most calls won't be effected by Privacy
Mode.
Privacy Mode works on all types of inbound calls, whether from the Internet or from the traditional
phone system.
A related feature is TeleMarketer Drop. If you answer a call from a telemarketer, you can deliver
them to the "legal message" by performing a flash (to get a second dial tone), then *98 (blind
transfer), then at the special transfer dial tone, dial **777# and hang up.
Telemarketer Screening and TeleMarketer Drop are included free with your PhoneGnome
service. There are no monthly fees associated with these features.

17
4.1.4 Basic Voicemail
Basic Voicemail is a free PhoneGnome feature. If enabled, Basic Voicemail will record a caller's
message and send that message as an attached (WAV) file to your designated e-mail address;
the WAV format is standard and should be playable across all operating systems.
4.1.5 Premium Voicemail
Premium Voicemail is an optional PhoneGnome feature.
Use Voicemail to retrieve messages left by callers when you are away from your phone. See who
left messages and when, and even listen to messages through your my.phonegnome.com
website. New messages are indicated on the Voicemail page. Plus, when a message is received
you'll get a "stutter" dial tone on that phone (this tone will illuminate the message waiting
indication on your telephone).
•The Voicemail page displays all voicemail messages.
•You can also listen to, save, and delete messages by dialing **123 from your
PhoneGnome phone.
•You can add numbers directly to your Phone Book by selecting the "Add to Phone Book"
icon on the Voicemail page.
•Customize your outgoing greeting
4.1.6 Low Cost Internet Calling
PhoneGnome makes it easy to choose a plan from the provider of your choice, using the Low
Cost Internet Calling feature. You can elect to use a given provider for national long-distance
calls, international calls, or both, and you can even select separate providers and plans for each.
Unlike most services, PhoneGnome doesn't lock you into a specific provider or plan for calls to
regular and mobile phones that aren't free.
When using PhoneGnome service with the PhoneGnome box, no calling plans are required to
make calls to any phone. When there is no plan activated, non-Free calls are delivered using your
home phone service, just as if the PhoneGnome box weren't there. However, by activating a net
calling plan, you can enjoy incredibly low rates to phones worldwide.
There are two steps required to setup an Internet Calling service. The first step is to create an
account for the Low Cost Calling service. The second step is to activate that account for a given
category of calls. These steps will be described in the sections below.
Once one activates the Internet calling feature, there is nothing special required to place a call
using that service. One simply dials a number, normally, with no pins or access codes required. If
PhoneGnome can complete the call for free, it will, otherwise it will use the selected Internet
calling service. Users can get calling card or even better pricing to those places they cannot call
for free, with the convenience of dialing in the conventional way, using their normal home phone.
4.1.6.1 Step 1: Setup an Internet Calling service
1. Log in to your account at http://my.phonegnome.com and select the "Features" tab.
2. At the feature labeled "Low Cost Internet Calling" - select the "Edit" link, then - on the
page that opens - select the link "Add Internet Calling Service"
3. Review the listed service provider offerings and select the provider plan of your choice by
clicking the corresponding logo; this will display the service provider sign-up page; follow
the instructions on that page, and select the large button to open that provider's account
creation page.
