WARNING - HAZARDOUS ENVIRONMENTS SYMBOL
This product is not specically designed for use in hazardous environments, for example in explosive
atmospheres. If the product is to be used in hazardous environments we recommend that the user
ensures suitable protective measures are taken.

WARNING - DANGER OF ELECTRIC SHOCK SYMBOL
This module may contain hazardous voltages. Before removing the module from the rack remove all
supplies and disconnect user I/O signals.
Unused slots in the System 10/20 chassis are populated with blanking plates to prevent access
to user I/O signals that may be present. Blanking panels are available to order from Pickering in a
variety of slot widths. If the product is not used in this manner for example by using an extender card
then additional care must be taken to avoid contact with exposed signals.
CAUTION - HANDLING OF ELECTROSTATIC-SENSITIVE DEVICES SYMBOL
Certain semiconductor devices used in this equipment are liable to damage due to static voltage.
Observe the following precautions when handling these devices in their unterminated state, or
sub-assemblies containing these devices:
1. Persons removing sub-assemblies from equipment using these devices must be earthed by a
wrist strap and a resistor at the point provided on the equipment.
2. Soldering irons used during the repair operations must be low voltage types with earthed tips and
isolated from the mains voltage by a double insulated transformer.
3. Outer clothing worn must be unable to generate static charges.
4. Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) tted with these devices must be stored and transported in
anti-static bags.

• Should a fault occur with the module or chassis, immediately isolate and disconnect the incoming power to the
chassis and the user I/O signals.
• Ensure the equipment is installed, operated and maintained by trained and authorised personnel.

Models 20-710A and 20-711 have a bank of 8 or 16 individual high
performance R.F. changeover relays (50Ωor 75Ω) with very low
insertion loss, suitable for handling signals up to 3000MHz.
Available with a choice of connectors: Industry standard BNCs are
suitable to beyond 1000MHz, for higher performance applications
SMA, SMB, BT Type 43 or 1.0/2.3 connector versions are available,
all featuring very low insertion loss & good VSWR with bandwidths
to beyond 3GHz.
The 75Ωversions are suitable for high frequency video and
telecommunication signals up to 3GHz (e.g. 622MBit data).
Programming
The RF module is simple to program either by single relay or by
pattern (8 or 16 relays simultaneously):

A functional block diagram is provided in Figures 2.1. The module is powered via the chassis connector J1 with +12V
relay and +5V logic supplies. The interface to the user test equipment is via the front panel mounted connectors. The
module comprises a Versatile SIMM Motherboard, a SIMM Controller PCB Assy and SIMM Relay Cards populated
with electro-mechanical relays.
The module is available as a 16 channel R.F switch utilising SPDT changeover relays with a choice of front panel
connectors. The relay drivers on the SIMM Relay Cards are fed with serial data from the SIMM Controller. Relay
switching is determined by operator programming. General status LEDs are provided on the front panel depending
on the module.

PRE-OPERATION CHECKS (UNPACKING)
1. Check the module for transport damage and report any damage immediately to Pickering Interfaces.
Do not attempt to install the product if any damage is evident.
2. Position the chassis relative to any other equipment the module(s) will connect with. Ensure the chassis is not
connected to the electrical supply.
3. Ensure that the designated area for the chassis containing the module is of at and solid construction to
withstand and support the combined weight of the module(s) and chassis.

Modular products require installation in a suitable System 10/20 chassis.
The module is designed for indoor use only.

HARDWARE INSTALLATION
ELECTRICAL CONNECTION (CHASSIS)
1. The chassis must be electrically installed in accordance with local regional electrical codes by a qualied
engineer.
2. Ensure the power supply lead provides the necessary integrity of chassis ground.
Electrostatic discharge can damage the components on the module. To avoid such damage in handling the
board refer to page VII.
Ensure that there is adequate ventilation.

MODULE INSTALLATION
The module should be installed in accordance with the following procedure:
1. Ensure that the system is turned OFF but still connected to mains so that it remains grounded.
2. If the module has address switches ensure they are set to the appropriate position. (See Section 4).
Note individual modules are not sent out with a system drawing detailing their address.
3. Choose an appropriate slot in the rack and remove the blanking plate (if tted).
(See the Pickering 10-910M IEEE-488 GPIB System 10/20 Ancillaries manual for further details).
(When tted, additional modules will be automatically recognised by the interface card. See Figure 3.1).
4. If necessary t the module guide rails as supplied with the module to both the top and bottom of the chassis
in that slot position. One guide rail slot should be to the left of the connector as shown in Figure 3.2.
5. Align the module with the backplane and screw holes at the front of the chassis.
Hold the handle whilst slowly sliding the module into the card guides until the module seats rmly into the
backplane. See Figure 3.4. The front panel of the module should be ush with the front or rear panel of the
chassis.
6. Screw the front panel of the module to the chassis front panel mounting rails.
7. Ensure all necessary modules including the power supply are tted to the rack and other slots blanked off
before powering up.
To achieve the correct initialisation of the sytem, ensure any slave chassis are powered up before the master
chassis.

SOFTWARE INSTALLATION
Refer to the Pickering manual 10-921M.
For the latest version of the driver please refer to our web site pickeringtest.com where links to our Software
Download page will provide the driver software for the various programming environments encountered.
Self-Test is invoked at power on and may also be operated under software control (*TST?). Self-Test pass is indi-
cated on a front panel LED with a full pass/fail description available using the DIAGNOSTIC? command.
The Self-Test is a 1 Level Test, see Figure 3.5:
1. Logic Test: Checks all logic including on-board microprocessor, relay drivers etc.
Note: In the unlikely event of a relay needing replacement additional relays are available from Pickering Interfaces.
Self-Test Operation
Self-Test is always run at power on. If self-test is run under software control it will rstly clear the whole matrix
(Manual Test will only function when the module is in a clear state). When the self-test has nished the matrix will
be returned to an all clear state (i.e. the previous state will not be remembered!).
Please note that because of the long self-test time, your computer may time out waiting for the test result (many
PC's have default timeouts set to low values).
Detailed Self-Test Reporting using the DIAGNOSTIC? Query
The DIAGNOSTIC? query will give an ASCII string detailing any self test failures. These will include:
Logic: Microprocessor, RAM, EPROM, Relay Drivers, Invalid Link Settings etc.
This string is not intended to be processed by the user’s software, it is suitable for copying directly onto the screen
of your control computer. This information will then indicate maintenance required (please contact Pickering for
further help).

Selecting the Module Address
The module internal address is factory pre-set however this can be recongured through software as required.
Please contact the factory as necessary.

The programming computer will need a GPIB card, a USB to GPIB Interface (Figure 4.1) or an Ethernet connection
to talk to the interface and communicate with the system depending on the type of interface tted.
• A 10-921-001 Interface requires either a GPIB or RS-232 connection.
• A 10-922-001 Interface requires an Ethernet connection.

The following are simple examples of how to program the module:
To close relay number 3 on module 21. CLOSE 21,3
Now look at status of relay 3 on module 21. VIEW? 21,3 will return “1".
To close all relays on module at address 21. WRITE 21,255
Now to look at module 21 status. VIEW? 21 will return “255".
