GETTING STARTED
Pleaseinspectyourloudspeakercarefully.NotifyyourPolkdealerif you noticeanydamageor missingitems.Keepthecartonandpacking
materialIt will dothebestjobofprotectingyourspeakerif it needsto betransported.
PLACEMENT (FIGURES 1.2 & 3)
YourPSWSeriessubwooferoffersmanyplacementoption-in anentertainmentcenter,behindfurniture,or nextto asofaorchair.It canbe
placedanywherein theroom.butyouwill getthebestperformancefromit whenit isonthesamesideof theroomasthefrontsatellites,

CONNECTING THE SUBWOOFER TO THE SYSTEM-GENERAL
If youelectto usethespeakerlevelinputs,usetwo-conductorI6 gaugeor thickerspeakerwires.SeeyourPolkdealerfor
wirerecommendations.
Notethatoneof thespeakerinputterminalsontherearofthespeakerismarkedred(+)andtheotherblack(-),Makecertainthatyou
connectthewirefromthered(+)terminalofyouramplifierto thered(+)terminalonyourspeaker,andthewirefromtheblack
(-)terminalof theamplifierto theblack(-)terminalonyourspeaker.Mostwirehassomeindication(suchascolorcoding,ribbing,
orwriting) ononeof thetwoconductorstohelpmaintainconsistency.If yoursubwooferdoesn’tseemto producemuchbass,it is
mostlikelythatoneof thespeakerwiresisconnectedbackwards.Doublecheckall connectionsfor correctpolarity.
Stripl/2” ofinsulationfromeachof thetwoconductorsonbothendstoexposethebarewire.Twisttheexposedwireofeachconductor
toformtwoml-frayedstrands.Connecttwoconductorstothereceiveror amp(referto theowner’smanualsuppliedwith yourelectronics
for assistancewith properhookup).Connectthetwoconductorsontheotherendofthewiretothespeakerterminals.Repeatfor the
otherchannel.
USING PUSH-TAB (FIGURE 4)
Pushtheplastictabofoneconnectortoopenupthehole.Insertthebarewireinto thehole.andreleasetheplastictab.Repeatthisstepforthe
otherterminal (Figure 4).
Makesurethatthetwo hue wireendsdonottoucheachother. Such contactcouldresultin anelectricalshortandcauseyourreceiveror ampli-
fier toturn off or mdlfunction
RECOMMENDED HOOK-UP METHOD FOR “SATELLITE” SYSTEMS
(FIGURES 5 & 6)
n Connecttheleftandrightfrontspeakeroutputsofyourreceiveror amplifierto thespeakerlevelinputsofthepoweredsubwooferwith
speakerwire.
n Then,connecttheleftandrightfrontsatellitespeakerswith speakerwirefromthespeakerleveloutputsfromthepoweredsubwoofer.
n If it ismoreconvenient,parallelwirethesubwooferandfrontsatellitesfromyourreceiver (Figure 6).
n ConnecttheCenterChannelSpeakerdirectlytothecenterchanneloutputfromyourreceiver.
. ConnecttheRearSurroundSatellitesdirectly-totherearor surroundchanneloutputsfromyourreceiver.

RECEIVER SET-UP I BASS MANAGEMENT
All surroundreceiversallowyouto“customize”theirperformancedependingonthesizeofyourspeakers.Referto theowner’smanualofyour
receiveror surroundprocessorto learnhowthisisdone.Togetthebestperformancefromsmall“satellite/sub-woofer”typesystems,usethe
followingsettingswith theabovehook-upmethod:
Frontspeakers--setto “large”
Centerspeaker--setto “normal”or ‘,small”
Surroundspeakers-.setto “small”
Subwoofer-.setto“OFF”or “none.”(Weknow.Doesn’tmakesense,right?Yoursystemobviouslyhasasubwoofer.Butreallytruly,thisisthe
correctsettingfortherecommendedhook-upmethod.Bysettingthefrontleftandrightspeakersto “Large”androutingthemthroughthesub-
wooferasinstructedabove,youdeliverafull rangesignaltothesubwoofer’slowpassfilter.Thelowpassfilter takesthelowfrequenciesand
passestherestontothefrontspeakers,forperfectsub/satblending.)
HOOK-UP METHOD #2 (FIGURE 7)
Thismethodcanbeusedwithelectronicsthatincludea“SUBOUT”feature (Figure 7).It isnotrecommendedforusewithRMSeries
“Sub/Sat”Systems.
ConnectasingleRCAcablefromthe“SUBOUT”ofyourelectronicstotheleftandright.Usea“Y”cabletoconnectthesinglesubwooferoutputjack
tothetwoLineLevelInputsofthesubwoofer.Thisinputbypassesthesubwoofer’svariablelowpassfilterandreliesonthefilterbuiltintoyourelec-
tronics.If your“SUBOUT”isanunfilteredsignal(checkyourowner’smanual),useeither
leftorright“LineLevelInput,”tousethelowpasscrossoverin thesubwoofer.
Whenusingmethod#2,it isnecessarytoadjustthesettingsofyourelectronicsasfollows:Frontspeakers=largeorsnlalldependingontheir
outputcapabiliteis;Subwoofer=“ON”.
HOOK-UP METHOD #3 (FIGURE 8)
Thismethodisforusewithelectronicsfeaturing“PREOUT”jacks.Connectthefrontleftandrightpreampoutputsfromyourelectronicstothe
leftandrightLINELEVELinputofthesubwoofer.ThismayrequireuseofRCA“Y”cables(notsupplied)tohookupboththesubwooferand
yourelectronics.Whenusingthisoption,it isnecessarytoadjustthesettingsonyourelectronicsasfollows:Frontspeakers=“LARGE,”
Subwoofer= “OFF”or “NO.”
SUBWOOFER ADJUSTMENTS (FIGURE 9)
ThePSW202PoweredSubwooferoffersarangeof settingciptions.Werecommendthefollowingsettingsasstartingpoints.butthesettingsthat
arebestforyoudependuponyourspeakerplacement,electronicsandpersonaltaste.Afteryou’vebecomefamiliarwith whatthesettingsdo,
experimentwith alternateoptionstofind themethodthatworksbestforyoursystemsetup.You’llfind aninformativearticleon“Subwoofer

AC POWER (FIGURE 9)
ThePSW202PoweredSubwooferhasabuilt-inpoweramplifierandmustbepluggedinto astandardhouseholdACpowersourcein orderto
operate.Thepowerswitchhasthreepositions:“On,
” “Off”and,‘Auto.”WhenthePoweredSubwooferispluggedin (evenwith thepowerswitch
in the“off” position)thepowerlightwill glowRED.In the“Auto”position,theamplifierwill automaticallyturnonassoonasthespeakersens-
esasignalcomingfromyourelectronics.Thepowerlightwill changefromREDto GREENuponsensingasignal.Thesubwooferwill turn off
approximately15minutesafterinputsignalceases,andthepowerlightwill returntoRED.
Inthe“On”position,thepoweramplifierwill operateandthepowerlightwill glowGREENuntil theswitchissetto the“Off”positionor the
ACcordisdisconnectedfromapowersource.Werecommendusingthe,‘Auto“position.Turnit to“Off”if thesystemwill notbeusedfor
extendedperiodsoftime,suchasduringvacations.
SUBWOOFER LEVEL CONTROL-VOLUME (FIGURE 9)
Subwooferlevel(volume)isadjustedviatheknobontherearamplifierplate.TosetSubwooferLevel,playapieceof musicthathasanaverage
amountof basscontent.Startwith theknobsetto 12o’clockandthePhaseSwitchsetto0.AdjustbyearusingawidevarietyofCDsandvideo
sources.Adjustfor deep,powerfulbasswithout“boominess.”

LOW PASS FILTER (FIGURES 9 & IO)
Thiscontroladjuststhefrequencyrangeoverwhichthesubwooferoperates,Experimentandletyourearsbethefinaljudge.If malevocals
sound“thin.” turnthiscontrolupuntil thevoicesoundsrichbutnotboomy.If malevocalssoundtoo‘thick“ or ‘chesty.”turn thiscontrol
downuntil thevoicesoundsnatural.
Turningtheknobclockwisefromtherecommendedsetting (Figure 10 or 70a) will addmore“warmth”tothebassandlowermidrange,
possiblyatthesacrificeofbass“tightness”andmidrangeclarity.Turningtheknobdownfromtherecommendedsettingwill makethebass
andlowermidrangesound“thinner.”
PHASE SWITCH (FIGURE 9)
Changingthephaseofyoursubwoofercanstrengthenitsbass,,attack.”If thebasssoundsmuddyor unclear,try togglingthephasecontrol.
Havesomeoneelseswitchbetweenthetwosettingswhileyousitin yourfavoritelisteningposition.Usemusicwith goodbass(preferably
“plucked“stringbass)andadeepmalevocal.Whenyouhearthebestbalanceof deepbassandnaturalloweroctavesof themalevoice,you
haveachievedoptimumphasetuning.

Yournewspeakercabinetcanbedustedor cleanedwith adampsoftcloth.Avoidharshdetergentsandcleaningfluids,theycanpermanently
damageyourspeaker’sfinish.Vacuumthegrilleto removedust.

Thisiswhatpassesfor humorin theaudiobusiness.Here’stherealanswer:If youhaveanyelectrical(50/60Hz)humin yoursystemyou’re
goingto hearit clearlyassoonasyouhookupyoursubwoofer.Mosthumproblemsarecausedby“groundloops.”Thatis,theelectricalgrounds
ofthecomponentsin yoursystemarenotatthesameelectricalpotential.AverycommongroundloopsourceiscableTV.Disconnectthecoaxial
cablefromyourTVand/orVCR.If thehumgoesaway,thecableisthegroundloopvillain. In thatcaseyouneeda75ohmgroundloopisolator.
