12.Power-Cord
Protection-Power-supply
cordsshouldberoutedsothattheyarenotlikelyto bewalkedonorpinched
byitemsplaceduponoragainstthem,payingparticularattentionto cordsat
plugs,conveniencereceptacles,andthepointwheretheyexitfromthe
appliances.
13.Lightning-For addedprotectionfor theseaudio/videoproductsduring
alightningstorm,orwhentheyareleftun-attendedandunusedfor long
periodsoftime,unplugthemfromthewalloutletanddisconnectthe
antennaor cablesystem.Thiswill preventdamageto theproductsdue
to lightningandpower-linesurges.
14.Servicing-Do notattemptto servicetheseproductsyourselfas
openingor removingcoversmayexposeyouto dangerousvoltageor
otherhazards,Referallservicingto qualifiedservicepersonnel.
15.DamageRequiringService-Unplugtheseproductsfromwall
outletsandreferservicingto qualifiedservicepersonnelunderthe
followingconditions:
a.Whenthepower-supplycordor plugisdamaged.
b.Ifliquidhasbeenspilled,or objectshavefallenintotheproducts
c.Iftheproductshavebeenexposedto rainorwater.
d.Iftheproductsdonotoperatenormallybyfollowingtheoperating
instructions.Adjustonlythosecontrolsthatarecoveredbytheoperating
instructionsasanimproperadjustmentofothercontrolsmayresultin
damageandwill oftenrequireextensiveworkbyaqualifiedtechnicianto
restoretheproductto its normaloperation.

16.ReplacementParts-When replacementpartsarerequired,besurethe
servicetechnicianhasusedreplacementpartsspecifiedbythemanufacturer
or havethesamecharacteristicsastheoriginalpart.Unauthorized
substitutionsmayresultinfire,electricshockorotherhazards.
17.SafetyCheck-Upon completionofanyserviceor repairsto these
products,asktheservicetechnicianto performsafetychecksto determine
thattheproductsareinproperoperatingcondition.

GETTING STARTED
Pleaseinspectyourloudspeakercarefully.NotifyyourPolkdealerif younoticeanydamageor missingitems.Keepthecartonandpacking
material.It will dothebestjobofprotectingyourspeakerif it needstobetransported.
PLACEMENT (FIGURES 1, 2 & 3)
YourPSWSeriessubwooferoffersmanyplacementoptions-inanentertainmentcenter,behindfurniture,ornextto asofaor chair.It canbe
placedanywherein theroom,butyouwill getthebestperformancefromit whenit isonthesamesideoftheroomasthefrontspeakers.
Placingit nearawallor in acornerwill increasebassloudness.Allowatleast6inches(15cm)of spacebetweenthesubwooferdriveranda
wallor obstruction (Figure 1).Thesubwoofershouldonlybeplacedonitsbase (Figure 2). It maylie onitsside,butNEVERLAYTHESUE
WOOFERONTHEAMPLIFIEREND-THISWILLDAMAGETHEAMPLIFIER (Figure 3).
Yourpoweredsubwooferis magneticallyshieldedforplacementnearvideomonitors.Allowatleast18”(45cm)ofspacebetweenyoursub-
wooferandanytelevision.If younoticevideodistortionor discoloration,immediatelymovethesubwooferawayfromtheTVandcallPolk

CONNECTING THE SUBWOOFER TO THE SYSTEM-GENERAL
If youelectto usethespeakerlevelinputs,usetwo-conductor16gaugeor thickerspeakerwires.SeeyourPolkdealerfor
wirerecommendations.
Notethatoneofthespeakerinputterminalsontherearof thespeakerismarkedred(+)andtheotherblack(-),Makecertainthatyou
connectthewirefromthered(+)terminalofyouramplifierto thered(+)terminalonyourspeaker,andthewirefromtheblack
(-)terminalof theamplifiertothebIack(-)terminalonyourspeaker.Mostwirehassomeindication(suchascolorcoding,ribbing,
orwriting) ononeofthetwoconductorstohelpmaintainconsistency.If yoursubwooferdoesn’tseemto producemuchbass,it is
mostlikelythatoneof thespeakerwiresis connectedbackwards.Doublecheckall connectionsfor correctpolarity,
Stripl/2” (12mm)ofinsulationfromeachofthetwoconductorsonbothendsto exposethebarewire.Twisttheexposedwireofeach
conductorto formtwoun-frayedstrands.Connecttwo conductorsto thereceiveror amp(referto theowner’smanualsuppliedwith your
electronicsfor assistancewith properhookup).Connectthetwoconductorsontheotherendofthewiretothespeakerterminals.Repeatfor
theotherchannel.
USING PUSH-TAB (FIGURE 4)
Pushtheplastictabof oneconnectorto openupthehole.Insertthebarewireinto thehole,andreleasetheplastictab.Repeatthisstepforthe
otherterminal (Figure 4).
Makesurethatthetwobarewireends(left& right)
receiveror amplifiertoturn off or malfunction, donottoucheachother.Such
contactcouldresultin anelectricalshortandcauseyour

speakerwire.
H Then,connecttheleft andrightfrontsatellitespeakerswith speakerwirefromthespeakerleveloutputsfromthepoweredsubwoofer.
n If it ismoreconvenient,parallelwirethesubwooferandfrontsatellitesfromyourreceiver (Figure 61,
n ConnecttheCenterChannelSpeakerdirectlyto thecenterchanneloutputfromyourreceiver.
n ConnecttheRearSurroundSatellitesdirectlyto therearor surroundchanneloutputsfromyourreceiver.

RECElVER SET-UP I SASS MANAGEMENT
All surroundreceiversallowyouto “customize”theirperformancedependingonthesizeofyourspeakers.Refertotheowner’smanualofyour
receiveror surroundprocessorto learnhowthisisdone.Togetthebestperformancefromsmall“satellite/subwoofer”typesystems,usethe
followingsettingswith theabovehook-upmethod:
Frontspeakers--setto “large”
Centerspeaker--setto “normal”or “small”
Surroundspeakers--setto “small”
Subwoofer--setto “OFF”or “none.”(Weknow.Doesn’tmakesense,right?Yoursystemobviouslyhasasubwoofer.Butreallytruly,thisisthe
correctsettingfor therecommendedhook-upmethod.Bysettingthefrontleftandrightspeakersto “Large”androutingthemthroughthesub-
wooferasinstructedabove,youdeliverafull rangesignaltothesubwoofer’slowpassfilter,Thelowpassfilter takes thelowfrequenciesand
passesfull rangesignalto thefrontspeakers,forperfectsub/satblending.)
HOOK-UP METHOD #2 (FIGURE 7)
Thismethodcanbeusedwith electronicsthatincludea“SUBOUT”feature (Figure 7).It isnotrecommendedforusewith compactsub/sat
systems.Connect a singleRCAcablefromthe“SUBOUT”ofyourelectronicsto theLFEinputof thesubwoofer.Thisinputbypassesthesub-
woofer’svariablelowpassfilter andreliesonthefilter built intoyourelectronics,If your“SUBOUT”is anunfilteredsignal(checkyourowner’s
manual),useeitherleftorright“LineLevelInput,”to usethelowpasscrossoverin thesubwoofer.WhenusingmethodK2,it isnecessaryto
adjustthesettingsofyourelectronicsasfollows:Frontspeakers=largeorsmalldependingontheiroutputcapabilities;Subwoofer= “ON,”
HOOK-UP METHOD #3 (FIGURE 8)
Thismethodisfor usewith electronicsfeaturing“PREOUT”jacks-andmaybeusedasasecondaryhookupmethodforusewith compact
satellitespeakerssuchasPolkRMSeries.Connecttheleft andrightpreampoutputfromyourelectronicsto theleftandrightLINELEVELinput
ofthesubwoofer.Thismayrequireuseof RCA“Y”cables(notsupplied)tohookupboththesubwooferandyourelectronics(PSW303&
PSW404).Whenusingmethod3 it isnecessaryto adjustthesettingsonyourelectronicsasfollows:Frontspeakers= LARGE;Subwoofer=
“OFF”or “NO.”
AC POWER CONNECTION AND AUTO ON/OFF (FIGURE 9)
ThesePSWseriessubwoofersfeatureautoon/offcircuitry,marked“auto”onthepowerswitch,thatautomaticallyturnsyoursubwooferon
whenit sensesaprogramsignal.Whennosignalispresent,thecircuitturnsthesubwooferoff afterafewminutes.If youareconcerned
aboutthebriefdelaybetweenwhenthemusicstartsandwhenthesubwooferturnson,simplyleaveyoursubwooferin the“on”position.
SUBWOOFER ADJUSTMENTS (FIGURE 9)
YourPoweredSubwooferoffersarangeof settingoptions.Werecommendthefollowingsettingsasstartingpoints,butthesettingsthatare
bestforyoudependuponyourspeakerplacement,electronicsandpersonaltaste.Afteryou’vebecomefamiliarwith whatthesettingsdo,

. Volume-Adjustbyearusing a widevarietyof CDsandvideosources.Adjustfor deep,powerfulbasswithout“boominess.”
l LowPass-Thiscontroladjuststhefrequencyrangeoverwhichthesubwooferoperates.Whenusingsmallermainspeakers,theupper
rangeof thecontrolwill probablyyieldthebestresults.Withlargerspeakers,thelowerendof thecontrolrangewill probablysoundbest,
butalwaysletyourearbethefinaljudge.If malevocalssound“thin,” turn thiscontrolupuntil thevoicesoundsrichbutnotboomy.If
malevocalssoundtoo“thick”or “chesty,”turnthis controldownuntil thevoicesoundsnatural.NOTE:Thiscontroldoesnotoperatewhen
thesubwooferisconnectedwith Method#2(LFEInput).
l PhaseSwitch-Havesomeoneelseswitchbetweenthetwosettingswhileyousitin yourfavoritelisteningposition.Usemusicwith good
bassandadeepmalevocal.Whenyouhearthebestbalanceofdeepbassandnaturalloweroctavesof themalevoice,youhaveachieved
optimumphasetuning.

ofthecomponentsin yoursystemarenotatthesameelectricalpotential.Averycommongroundloopsourceis cableTV.Disconnectthecoaxial
cablefromyourTVand/orVCR.If thehumgoesaway,thecabIeisthegroundloopvillain, In thatcaseyouneeda75ohmgroundloopisolator.
