Introduction
Extend your reach with the PosiXtend. Its read range of up to 61cm (24") and
extreme weather-resistant casing make it ideal for long-range applications such as
parking garages and handicapped facilities. The PosiXtend offers automatic range
adjustment to ensure optimum read range in any environment.

*The specified read range assumes no electrical interference and that the card is presented
parallel to the reader, with the reader installed and operated as outlined in this manual. The
read range will vary depending on the type of card used. The larger the card, the greater the
read range. The read range may decrease if the reader is mounted on metal.
Basic Operation
When power is supplied to the reader, the antenna in the reader will emit a
continuous low-frequency RF field. When a card is placed within this field, the
antenna inside the card will gather the energy present in the field to power the
internal circuitry of the card. The card will then transmit its unique identification (ID)
number to the reader. After receiving the signal, the reader verifies the validity of
the signal. If the signal is valid, it will be decoded by the reader and sent in the
appropriate output format to the host controller through data cables. The controller
then determines what action to take in response to the information received from
the reader. See Figure 1 on page 25.
Power Requirements
The controller’s power supply may not be able to supply sufficient power to the
PosiXtend extended range proximity reader, therefore an external power supply
unit, such as the Paradox Switching Power Supply (PS-817) is needed. Refer to
Figure 4 on page 27 or Figure 7 on page 30 for power supply unit connections.

Read Range
The PosiXtend extended range proximity reader is designed to offer the best possible
read range for all installations. The PosiXtend reader automatically calibrates its read
range to the maximum possible range, however in certaininstallations the read range
may be reduced due to the environment. It is strongly recommended that you test the
PosiXtend reader before mounting and installing the reader.
Testing the Read Range
Test the reader’s range for your particular installation site before mounting and
installing the unit.
Perform the read range test as close as possible to the final mounting
location.
1. Connect the PosiXtend extended range proximity reader to a power supply
unit and power up the reader.
2. Position an access card or key tag parallel to the reader, and move the card
or key tag toward the reader slowly until the reader beeps to indicate that the
card or key tag has been read.
3. Measure the read range distance and compare it to the values in the "Technical
Specifications" on page 3. If the read range is drastically reduced, Ferrite plates
can be used to decrease the interference and thus increase the range.
Automatic Read-Range Calibration
On power up, the PosiXtend reader will automatically calibrate its read range to
the maximum possible range for the installation site. The reader will beep during
the calibration sequence, which lasts approximately 15 seconds. When the
automatic read-range calibration is complete, the reader will emit a long beep
(“Beeeeeeeep”). After the initial read range calibration is complete, the PosiXtend
reader will continue to fine-tune its read range during normal operation.
Please note that after powering up the unit, the automatic range
adjustment feature can take up to 5 minutes before it stabilizes the
reader’s maximum range.
Range Reduction
If the PosiXtend extended range proximity reader is mounted in an electrically
noisy environment, on a metallic surface, or within close range of a CRT or a
computer monitor, the read range will be reduced. This range reduction can be in
excess of 35% depending on the type of interference. Refer to "Mounting on
Metal" on page 6 for more information.

Mounting
Please consider the following when selecting a mounting location:
• Avoid installing within 3m (10ft) of computer monitors or CRTs. The distance
may vary depending on the monitor and CRT type.
• Avoid installing near large metallic surfaces such as steel walls or chain-link
fences.
• Avoid installing in proximity to sources of broad spectrum EMI noise such as
motors, pumps, generators, DC to AC converters, uninterruptible power
supplies, AC switching relays and light dimmers.
• Avoid installing in proximity to potential sources of RF signal transmitters such
as cellular telephones and two-way radios.
After selecting the appropriate mounting position for the reader, use the reader's
mounting plate as a guide and drill six mounting holes and a 9.5mm to 25.4mm
(3/8" to 1") hole for the reader cable. Place a grommet around the edge of the hole
for the reader cable. After wiring the cables as described in "Wiring" on page 6,
screw the mounting plate onto the selected installation site, snap the reader cover
onto the mounting plate and affix with two screws as shown in Figure 3 on page 26.
Mounting on Metal
The PosiXtend extended range proximity reader is pre-calibrated at the factory for
mounting on non-metallic surfaces. For best results, avoid mounting on metal as
this may decrease the read range. The reader should not be framed with or
surrounded by metal of any kind. If the reader requires an outdoor enclosure, such
as a car park entry, contact Position Technology Inc. for sources of appropriate
fiberglass enclosures. If the reader must be installed in a metal enclosure, ensure
that the face of the reader is not covered and that there is at least 4cm (1.6")
between the reader and the metal on all sides of the reader. Ferrite plates can be
used to reduce the interference and thus increase the read range. Contact Fair-

for ordering information. Please note that four ferrite plates (product number:
3642012401) will be required.
Wiring
Using the recommended cables listed in the "Technical Specifications" on page 3,
connect the cable wires to the PosiXtend extended range proximity reader input
terminals, route the cable from the reader to the host controller and connect the
cable wires to the matching inputs of the host controller. Connect the cables as
shown in Figure 4 on page 27 (Wiegand) or Figure 7 on page 30 (ABA). Trim and
cover all conductors.

An external power supply unit is required to power the PosiXtend extended
range proximity reader.
Avoid wiring the PosiXtend extended range proximity reader cables in the
same conduit with AC power cables, lock power, or signal wiring. Maintain all
reader wiring a minimum of 30cm (12") away from other wiring such as AC
power, computer data wiring, telephone wiring and wiring to electric lock
devices.
General Installation Notes
• LED and "beeper" operations are programmed via the Centaur®access control
software, if using another controller refer to appropriate instructions.
• Do not use "twisted pair" with either output format.
• Pull the orange wire low to illuminate the red LED.
• Pull the yellow wire low to illuminate the green LED.
• Pull both the orange and yellow wires low to illuminate the red and green
LEDs, producing an amber color.
• Pull the brown wire low to activate the "beeper".
• Follow the recommended cable types and lengths listed in the “Technical
Specifications” on page 3.
• For open collector (non-terminated output), consult your system manufacturer
for correct cable length and type.
• The data out internal circuit configurations are as shown in Figure 2 on page 25.
Card Presentation Test
Place the card parallel to the PosiXtend extended range proximity reader and
move it toward the reader until the card code displays on the controller screen. At
this point, the card is read, decoded, data transmitted to the controller and the
controller has responded accordingly. To read the card again, remove and re-insert
the card into the reader's field.
If a card or key tag is left in the reader’s field for more than 5 seconds, the
green and red LEDs will flash alternatively.

Tricolor LED Display
The PosiXtend extended range proximity reader includes a tricolor LED display
(red, green and amber) used to indicate the reader's status. When the orange wire
is pulled low, the red LED will illuminate. When the yellow wire is pulled low, the
green LED will illuminate. When the yellow and orange wires are pulled low, both
LEDs will illuminate producing an amber color.
If a card or key tag is left in the reader’s field for more than 5 seconds, the
green and red LEDs will flash alternatively.
Face Light
The PosiXtend extended range proximity reader includes a blue face light. The
elegant face light remains illuminated at all times so the reader can be easily
located in the dark.
Audible Tone
The PosiXtend extended range proximity reader includes a built in beeper that will
emit a tone every time the brown wire is pulled low.
Weather Resistant
The PosiXtend extended range proximity reader can be mounted either indoors or
outdoors.
SwiftRead
After presenting the card, regardless of the card's access status, the LED will flash
to indicate that the reader has read the card and the data was sent to the
controller. After the SwiftRead period, the controller resumes control of the LED as
usual.
Diagnostic Test
All PosiXtend extended range proximity readers perform a self-diagnostic test
during power up to ensure proper operation and to verify the integrity of the
internal hardware. Every time power is applied to the reader, the green LED will
flash twice to indicate the diagnostic test was performed and no problems were
found. If the reader determines a problem after performing the diagnostic test, the
green and red LEDs will toggle on and off and the beeper will emit a pulsing tone.
