FOREWORD
This manual has been prepared as a guide to the owner and operators of the Powermatic Band Saw.
In order to obtain maximum life and efficiency from your Powermatic Band Saw, we suggest reading
this manual thoroughly and following all instructions carefully.
The specifications herein were in effect at the time this book was approved for printing. Powermatic/
Houdaille whose policy is one of continuous improvement, reserves the right to change specifications
at any time without notice and without incurring obligations.
RECEIVING & SET UP
1. RECEIVING
Uncrate and check for shipping damage. Clean all coated and greased surfaces. Read instructions
thoroughly. Locate all lubrication points, adjustments, methods of drive.
2. MOUNTING
Mount machine securely to solid foundation; concrete base mounting preferred. Locate in clean, dry
and well ventilated building if possible. Motor and electrical connections should be protected
when not in operation or if exposed to weather elements.
3. INSPECTION
The above machine requires a minimum amount of attention in service. Periodic or regular inspec-
tions are recommended to insure machine is in proper adjustment and with positive electrical con- ~
nections; also, to correct worn or loose "V" belts and loose or heating bearings.
4. BEFORE OPERATING
Check motor nameplate data or WIrIng diagram of motor and switch for proper voltage connection
before wiring into line. Run motor without load to check the connections and direction of rotation.
Always refer to motor nameplate for rotation connections.

SAFETY RULES
1. When setting up the machine for any sawing job, rotate bandwheel by hand to make certain saw '
blade tracks properly. Keep table free from tools and materials.
2. Always keep blade guard in place. Upper blade guide as close as possible to work piece. Upper and
lower doors closed and locked during operation.
3. If feeding is done manually, use push stick. Keep hands away from saw area.
4.
Keep saw teeth sharp and properly set. Improper set teeth will cause blade to "walk" and imposes
undue strain on blade, causing breakage.
5.
Always disconnect power supply when servicing machine.
6. Horse play or conversation while operating machine is dangerous. Keep your eye on the saw
and work piece.
7. Wear goggles for eye protection.
8. Roll up your sleeves and wear tight fitting work clothes. Loose or ragged clothing is dangerous.
Your hand may be pulled into blade.
9. Never clean saw area when machine is running .
10. Machine frame should be electrically grounded in compliance with local regulations.
11. Always keep directional valve (at front of table) at neutral position when hydraulic feed is not
used.
12. Before operating the machine, table trunnion, saw guide bar and blade guides must be locked.
13 . Pressures for hydraulic pump unit and air compressor unit are factory set. Do not tamper with
safety valves.
14 . Good housekeeping is one of the most important of all safety rules.
DESCRIPTION
The Model 89 Band Saw is a 20" medium duty, variable speed metal and wood cutting saw with an
integral hydraulic feed mechanism. The frame is constructed of welded steel plate for rigidity. The
bandwheels have crowned rubber tires designed to handle carbon steel blades up to %" wide. The
hydraulic feed mechanism is a reciprocating table insert assembly complete with pump and reservoir
which requires no external air supply. The hydraulic cylinder applies force directly in line with the
blade which eliminates any couple or twisting effect. The power feed mechanism may be used to drive
a straight material push block, a miter attachment or a contour cutting attachment.

MOTOR & WIRING
The standard saw motor is a 2HP, 3\2>, 230/460 unit and must be checked for proper rotation before
operating machine. The hydraulic pump motor is a % HP, 115 V, 1\2> unit only and is supplied with 4
power through a 1KVA 230/460-110 transformer. The saw and pump motor are controlled by indepen-
dent switches. Overload protection and magnetic starting is optionally available. The frame of the
machine must always be electrically grounded.
WHEEL ALIGNMENT
The band wheels are properly aligned at the factory and should operate correctly. However, in shipping
the original adjustments may have moved necessitating readjustment. When properly aligned, both
bandwheels must lie in the same plane. The tilt of the lower wheel may be changed by adjusting the
transmission. To adjust the transmission tilt, loosen the two rear hold-down bolts and adjust the
two adjacent jack screws. The hold-down bolts must then be retightened after adjustment. The tilt
of the upper wheel may be adjusted by turning the hand knob located at the back of the cabinet.
BLADE INSTALLATION
To install saw blade, remove two knurled knobs located under the table and slide insert and cylinder
assembly out of table. Do not disconnect hydraulic lines. Open upper and lower doors. Take the
blade in both hands and slide through table slot and over both band wheels. Check direction of teeth
to insure that they point downward at the work area. Tighten blade tensioning screw until the blade
tension indicator points to the correct blade width. Turn band wheels by hand and check the blade
to insure that it is tracking steadily and in the center of the wheels . The back of the blade should
barely touch the bearing in the upper and lower guides. The sides of the blade should barely clear
the guide inserts and have approximately the same clearance on each side. Complete all blade adjust-
ments to upper and lower guide assemblies before re-installing the power cylinder assembly.

BLADE TENSION
Correct blade tension is very important for proper operation.
The wider the blade the greater the tension required. The
spring is designed to give tension for standard blade thicknesses
only. A
graduated tension indicator (1) for different width
blades is used to show the approximate tension setting. Tension
is
regulated by turning hand knob (2) which compresses the
tension spring (3).
BLADE GUIDE ADJUSTMENT
For proper operation, the saw blade must be supported by an
upper and lower saw guide. The lower guide is mounted under
the table and the upper guide on a counterbalanced bar above
the table. The guides support the back and sides of the blade
during the cutting operation and should be as close to the work-
piece as possible. Before adjusting the guides, make sure the
blade is tracking properly and is adequately tensioned. To
adjust the guides, loosen set screw (1) and slide guide assembly
in or out until the teeth and gullets in the blade project just
outside the front of the inserts (2). Loosen set screw and
slide backup bearing assembly until bearing (3) just touches
back of blade. Loosen lock screw (4) and turn adjusting
knobs (5) (6) until each insert barely clear each side of
the blade. A piece of paper may be used as an approximate
gauge between blade and inserts. Each lock screw must be
securely retightened after each adjustment step_

POWER TRANSMISSION
The power train to drive the band wheel is comprised of a compound set of variable speed sheaves and
a two-speed mechanical transmission. The transmission is controlled by a shifting lever located in the
front of the column. Do not shift the transmission with the motor running. To shift the transmission
from one range to another, open the upper door, turn the band wheel and simultaneously work the
shift lever into the desired range. Close the door before restarting the machine . All adjustments to the
variable speed drive sheave must be made with the saw motor running . To adjust the speed, turn
the variable speed handwheel in the indicated direction until the desired speed is read on the speed
dial.
TO DISASSEMBLE TRANSMISSION
Remove set screws from lower Band Wheel (285003) , and remove wheel. Remove (3) hex head bolts
behind lower wheel , releasing front of transmission box from Band Saw frame . From rear of ma-
chine, remove variable speed arm bolt (6718013). Swing variable speed arm (3025024) out of way. Re-
move (4) cap screws
from base of transmission box. Remove all drive belts. Remove set screws hold-
ing
variable speed pulley (2719001) to shaft (3705006). Remove variable speed pulley (2719001) . Re-
move
set screw (6715013) from clutch shift arm (3025025) and disengage clutch shift arm from clutch shift
shaft (3704007). Remove Transmission box from cabinet.
To remove clutch or wheel shaft, first remove top of Transmission box , (3800010) and pour out oil. Loosen
set screw (6716004) and remove clutch shift shaft (3704007) and clutch shift fork (3216004). Remove
bearing cap (3078005) and bearing cap gasket (3234231). Remove cap screws (6714014) and remove
variable speed arm bracket (3064079). Put sliding clutch in neutral position and with screwdriver or
punch remove wheel shaft lock ring (6670037) . Lock ring is located between clutch (3095003) and
high speed clutch assembly (2095001). Shaft cannot be removed without removal of this lock ring.
Remove
wheel shaft from Transmission box by tapping with a wooden block. Shaft is driven out from
rear of transmission toward front.
Reverse above procedure for re-assembly.
To
remove main shaft (3706016), first remove solid bearing cap (3078005) and bearing gasket (3234231).
Remove
bearing cap (3078004) and bearing cap gasket (3234231). Loosen allen screws from high speed
main shaft sprocket (3758203) and low speed main shaft sprocket (3758006) . With wood block drive main
shaft (3706016) out from rear of transmission box toward front.
Reverse above procedure for re-assembly.
Drive chains may be removed or replaced in transmission box without removing any shaft or sprocket.
To
remove chain, rotate sprockets until master link appears. Remove master link locking clip. Chain
will come apart readily. Transmission box uses (4j drive chains, (3) #40ASA chains 33 links or 66 pitch
long and one (1) short chain #40ASA 26 links or 52 pitches long.
When replacing transmission, transmission box must be leveled to assure proper alignment of drive on
lower wheel. Transmission Box feet are equipped with leveling screws for easy adjustment. ...

TABLE ADJUSTMENTS
The table is mounted on a heavy duty single action trunnion
(1) that rests on a trunnion base (2). The table may be tilted
45° to the right and 15° to the left. Table is locked in position
by trunnion handwheel (3). To tilt the table, loosen hand
wheel and tilt table to the desired angle and retighten hand
wheel. An angle indicating scale is ' located on the back of
the trunnion. To level the table, raise guide bar to the highest
position
and place machinist square against side of blade.
Set the table stop (4) under table by adjusting the screw
on top of the stop. The stop must be removed when tilting
the table to the left.
POWER FEED UNIT
The hydraulic feed mechanism is comprised of a hydraulic reservoir, motor and pump, directional con-
trol valve, flow control valve, hydraulic cylinder, and a traveling table insert.
The hydraulic pump is a fixed displacement unit with a built-in pressure relief valve. The pump is
driven by an independent motor and is mounted on top of the oil reservoir. The oil reservoir is equipped
with a fill cap, drain plug, and a dip stick that is marked for maximum and minimum oil level. The oil
level
should be maintained near the maximum level in order to prevent overheating the oil. A submerged
filter is connected to the pump suction line inside the tank. The filter will remove most of the impuri-
ties and abrasive particles from the system, but in order to maintain long life for the hydraulic com-
ponents,
the oil must be changed periodically per the lubrication schedule.
The directional control valve is used to control the direction of the table insert movement. It has
three positions-down for forward, horizontal for neutral, and up for reverse. The neutral position
permits an unrestricted oil flow back to the reservoir. In order to prevent overheating the oil, always
keep the lever in the neutral position when not actually sawing .
The flow control valve is a metering device used to regulate the speed of the feed mechanism in the
forward direction only. The valve gives a free flow in the reverse direction. The feed mechanism may
be completely stopped by the valve even though the direction control valve is in the forward position.
The flow control valve is marked with numbered graduations so that it will be convenient to repeat a
desired speed setting.
The hydraulic cylinder is used to drive the traveling insert. Piston rod of the cylinder is attached to
the table and the other end to the insert.
The traveling insert has a series of holes along its axis that are used in conjunction with projecting
dowel pins in the push block to transmit the force to the work piece.

POWER FEED OPERATION
To operate the power feed mechanism, close the flow control valve (1) and place the directional control
valve (2) in neutral. Place the push block pins in the traveling insert holes. Position the work piece
against the push block and near the saw blade. Turn on the hydraulic motor and then the saw motor.
Push directional control valve (2) handle down in the forward position. Gradually open the flow con-
trol valve (1) and the insert (3) will begin to travel. Increase the feed rate slowly until the desired
feed is obtained. Excessive feed will result in chattering or broken saw teeth. When workpiece has
been cut, pull directional control handle up and the insert will retract.
Always keep the directional control valve in neutral when the saw is not being used. If the operator
turns on the pump when the directional control valve is in forward or reverse, the insert will im-
mediately begin to travel and whatever is between the push block and saw blade will be cut or the
blade will be broken.

OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES
CONTOUR ATTACHMENT
The contour cutting attachment is a
unique attachment used to make con-
tour cuts. It is power driven and may
be set up in a few seconds. The ex-
clusive
feature of a roller backed seg-
ment guide permits effortless turning of
the workpiece . The segment may rotate
45° in either direction. Set up is made
by placing the push block (1) in the
sliding insert (2) , positioning the seg-
mented guide (3) against the block and
inserting the workpiece in the guide.
CHIPBLOWER & COOLANT
The mist coolant assembly is comprised of a
coolant
tank (1), air valve (2), coolant valve (3),
mixing nozzle (4), and air compressor. When
applied to the point of work, it increases saw life,
gives a finer finish
and increases the speed of cut-
ting.
The mist should be directed onto the cutting
edge of the saw band-this will assure coolant
flowing
on both sides of the saw-a fine mist is all
that is required for most materials. A water solu-
'Jle coolant is
recommended for most cutting op-
erations except with speeds of 150 SFM or less-
in those tough high impact metals, a cutting oil is
recommended.
