Congratulations on your purchase of a Promac brush mulcher. We at Promac
appreciate your business and look forward to working with you in the future. Please
completely read and understand this manual prior to operation in order to install,
operate, and maintain your brush mulcher safely.
Be sure to read and understand the warranty policy at the beginning of this manual.
In order to obtain warranty coverage, you must return all warranty forms as indicated
prior to operation.
A metal serial number plate is affixed to the frame of the brush mulcher. If the serial
plate has been damaged or lost, the serial number can still be found stamped into the
frame.
| PROMAC EQUIPMENT OPERATOR’S MANUAL HSL60
These are general safety considerations. Additional precautions may be necessary to
operate your machine in a safe manner. Be certain you are operating your machine in
accordance with all safety codes, OSHA rules and regulations, insurance
requirements and local, provincial, and federal laws.
It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure that all personnel read and understand this
manual prior to working with or on the brush mulcher. All operators must thoroughly
understand safe and correct installation, operation, and maintenance procedures.
Operate and maintain this machine in a safe manner and in accordance with all
applicable local, provincial, and federal codes, regulations and/or laws; and in
compliance with on-product labeling and this owner’s manual instructions. Make sure
that all personnel know how to stop the machine and attachment by disengaging all
controls. Make sure the attachment is installed on the machine correctly before being
placed in service.
Maintain safety decals in legible condition. See the section titled “Component and
Safety Decal Identification” on page 14 for decal locations and part numbers.
Brush mulchers are designed specifically for removal of brush, scrub, shrubbery,
small trees, and other undergrowth in rural areas. They are not recommended for use
in commercial or dense residential neighborhoods.
The rotor is enclosed by a high-strength steel shroud which helps control and direct
cut debris in a safe direction. It is possible for some debris to be thrown in a sudden
and unpredictable manner. For this reason, attention to the operators-surroundings
and the brush mulcher’s debris path must always be maintained.

Never operate machinery under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Failure to do so
can result in equipment damage, injury or death. Rotating equipment is extremely
dangerous. Always lock out the control circuit when exiting the carrier and never
attempt to manually stop a rotating component.
1. Never rotate equipment with other personnel in contact with the brush mulcher
2. Read and observe all warnings decals on the machine before attempting to
operate the attachment
3. Keep children, bystanders and other workers off and away from the machine and
attachment during operation.
4. Never attempt to make any adjustments while the attachment is running, or the
key is in the “ON” position in the machine
5. Do not allow persons under the influence of alcohol, medications, or other drugs
that can impair judgment or cause drowsiness to operate or maintain the
machine.
6. Never attempt to pull debris off the rotor, which would cause it to rotate. Always
cut debris free.
7. Do not stand underneath a raised brush mulcher. Refer to the maintenance
section of this manual for proper procedures for repair or replacement of
components.
8. Do not operate the brush mulcher in the immediate vicinity of people, wildlife or
physical structures.
9. The hydraulic system is under high pressure. Ensure all lines and fittings are tight
and in good condition. These fluids escaping under high pressure can cause
serious injury.
10. Under no circumstances will Promac Equipment (Promac Group) accept
responsibility or liability for equipment damage, injury or death resulting from
misuse, unsafe operation or inadequate site preparation.
| PROMAC EQUIPMENT OPERATOR’S MANUAL HSL60
Read this chapter carefully and follow the instructions outlined before starting up the
brush mulcher for the first time.
Failure to adhere to the following procedures may result in equipment damage,
personal injury or death and may void the product warranty.
Check the Bill of Lading against the shipment to make sure all packages are
delivered. Inspect the shipment for any damage incurred during transport. Notify the
shipping company and Promac Equipment immediately if you are aware of any
damages or discrepancies.
Remove all packing materials but DO NOT remove plastic dust shields or pipe plugs
from hydraulic components until ready to connect the brush mulcher to the carrier.
The mulcher is supplied with hoses to connect to the carrier, however, quick
connects are not supplied due to variances between manufacturers.
Check the serial plate and machine against the original purchase order to make sure
that the correct unit has been supplied. The brush mulcher has been shipped ready
to connect to the carrier hydraulic system.
The following installation notice is attached to new machines. This contains the
recommended maximum hydraulic flow and pressure as well as the maximum rotor
speed.
1. The brush mulcher
requires a constant flow
of hydraulic oil to
operate. A carrier with a
flow circuit of at least 25
GPM is recommended.
2. The brush mulcher
hydraulic components are
protected by a manifold
mounted to the frame.
The manifold acts as an
anti-cavitation and
crossover relief valve. The
relief is factory set to
5200 PSI. This is installed
with a tamper-proof cap.
Any modifications to the manifold will void the warranty.
| PROMAC EQUIPMENT OPERATOR’S MANUAL HSL60
3. A case drain line is required and must be routed directly to the hydraulic tank! Do
not tee this line into any other hydraulic circuits.
4. Hydraulic line size is important. Having incorrect line size can cause excess heat in
the hydraulic system. Pressure and return lines should be, at minimum, the
diameter and pressure rating of the hoses supplied on the brush mulcher.
5. Case drain lines should be a minimum of 1/2 inch diameter and made from two
braid hose.
6. Use of quick connect couplings can contribute to increased pressure and heat in
the hydraulic system. Quick connect couplings are also prone to decoupling
during machine operation which may damage hydraulic components and cause
excessive oil leakage from the carrier.
7. A motor case drain relief valve is installed to protect the motor. See Component
and Safety Decal Identification for location of emergency vent. If the case is over
pressurized, hydraulic oil will vent alerting the operator. If oil is released, shut
down the carrier and ensure case drain connection is properly made and there are
no excessive restrictions in the return circuit.
The rotor speed of the brush mulcher must not exceed the maximum RPM shown on
the installation notice and the serial plate. Operation in excess of the listed maximum
RPM can result in equipment damage, injuries or death and will void the warranty.
Brush mulchers are designed for removal of organic material of moderate size. They
are not designed for stump grinding, rock removal or operating below grade.
Operation in the above manner will result in serious damage to the brush mulcher
and void the warranty. Occasional impact from loose rock or large debris will not
cause serious harm. Always avoid contact with the ground to preserve the life of the
cutting teeth and bearings.
The carrier must be protected against debris that may be thrown by the brush
mulcher or against falling trees or branches. Failure to protect the carrier’s “cabin”
may put operating personnel at risk of injury or death.
Refer to the following for specific carrier requirements.
•Applicable Standards:
oWorkers Compensation (WCB or Equivalent)
oOccupational Safety and Health (OSHA or equivalent)
oInternational Organization for Standardization (ISC)
oSociety of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
•Local, Provincial / State and Federal Laws
•Machine carrier manufacturer recommendations & requirements
| PROMAC EQUIPMENT OPERATOR’S MANUAL HSL60
•Qualified professional engineer or cab guarding manufacturer
Check your carrier specific instructions for hooking up work tool attachments.
Warning: Ensure attachment-locking pins are fully lowered into the mounting plate
per carrier manufacturer’s instructions.
Make sure the following checks are made prior to initial start-up. Make sure brush
mulcher control valve is off and locked out.
1. Brush mulcher to carrier mounting is secure.
2. Hydraulic lines and connections are free from defects and secure.
3. Fluid Levels are topped up.
4. Rotor cutting teeth and mounting hardware are secure and undamaged.
5. Rotor rotates freely in the proper direction with minimal bearing resistance
and no abnormal noises.
6. All ground personnel are clear of the working area and are a minimum of 300
ft from the machine.
The following procedure should be carried out with the brush mulcher resting on
even ground that is free of debris that could be picked up and thrown by the
mulcher.
1. Start carrier and idle to allow oil to warm up to operating temperature. Engage
brush mulcher circuit at idle and allow to run observing the unit for noise and
excessive vibration. Disengage the control circuit and allow the rotor to come to
a full stop.
2. Run at full speed (maximum flow). It may be necessary to increase the engine
speed to provide adequate hydraulic flow to reach recommended RPM. Rotor
speed can be measured using a photo tachometer pointed at a small piece of
reflective tape affixed to the rotor sheave/sprocket.
3. If the above steps were performed with no issues, installation is complete. Refer
to the remainder of this manual for operation and maintenance.
Before inspection of the work area, consult local authorities and inquire about any
necessary work permits or assessments.
| PROMAC EQUIPMENT OPERATOR’S MANUAL HSL60
Areas to be cut must first be inspected for objects that could be thrown or cause
equipment damage, injury or death. Physically inspect the area for overgrown fences,
boulders, rocks, culverts, stumps, or metal objects. Mark the inspected area with
flagging.
Mark the inspected area with flags and or tape. Flagging must be visible to the
operator during operation.
Signage must be displayed to alert pedestrians, vehicles and other workers to the
work area. A minimum of 300 feet (100m) from the limits of the work area should be
maintained. Consult local rules and regulations before commencing work.
Large or difficult to inspect areas are commonly worked in sections or plots. Refer to
the above diagram when reading the following procedure.
•Set up signage 300 feet (100m) ahead of the area to be worked (danger sign 1).
Area ‘A’ could be already cleared or if needing to be worked signage should be
placed an additional 300 feet (100m) further ahead.
•Place another sign (danger sign 2) 300 feet (100m) away from the far side of the
area to be worked.
•As the first area is being cleared (Area ‘A’), sections or plots further than 300 feet
(100m) away from the area can be inspected, (Area ‘C’). Once the first area is
clear, signage should be moved to the next position, as shown in the diagram.
•Repeat the process as required. For example, as Area ‘B’ is being cleared, area ‘D’
can be inspected.
