The Rad o Shack PRO-60 Programmable Scanner lets you n on all the act on!
Th s scanner g ves you d rect access to more than 68,000 frequenc es

can select up to 200 channels to scan, and change your select on at any
t me. The secret to your scanner's ab l ty to scan so many frequenc es s

Power Sources
You can power your scanner from any of the follow ng:
Internal batter es (not suppl ed)
Standard AC power (us ng an opt onal AC adapter [273-1665])
Your veh cle's battery (us ng an opt onal DC auto adapter [270-1560])
Us ng Internal Battery Power
You can power your scanner from s x AA batter es (not suppl ed). For the
longest battery l fe, we recommend alkal ne batter es (such as Cat. No.
23-552). Or, you can use rechargeable n ckel-cadm um batter es (such as
Cat. No. 23-125).
1. If the scanner s on, turn VOLUME OFF/MAX counterclockw se to turn t
off.
2. Press down OPEN on the center of the battery compartment cover and
sl de the cover off n the d rect on of the arrow.
3. Remove the battery holder from the battery compartment.
4. Install s x fresh batter es as nd cated by the polar ty symbols
(+ and -) marked on the battery holder and ns de the battery
compartment.
CAUTION: Never m x rechargeable and non-rechargeable batter es.
Use only fresh batter es of the requ red s ze and type. Always
remove old or weak batter es. Batter es can leak chem cals that
can destroy electron c c rcu ts.
5. Replace the battery holder n the compartment.
NOTE: The battery holder f ts only one way n the compartment.
6. Replace the battery compartment cover.
When the batter es are low, the d splay flashes and the scanner beeps.
When th s happens, replace all s x non-rechargeable batter es or recharge
all s x rechargeable n ckel-cadm um batter es (see "Charg ng N ckel-
Cadm um Batter es").
Important Informat on about the External Power Jacks
The PWR jack lets you connect an external AC or DC adapter to operate the
scanner. Connect ng an adapter to the PWR jack d sconnects the nternal

batter es.
NOTE: You can use the PWR jack when e ther chargeable or non-rechargeable
batter es are nstalled.
The CHG jack lets you connect an external AC or DC adapter to
operate the scanner. When you connect an adapter to the CHG jack,
the nternal batter es rema n connected and get recharged.
WARNING: Never use the CHG jack when non-chargeable batter es are
nstalled. If you try to recharge non-rechargeable batter es,
they could get very hot and m ght explode or leak ac d.
CHARGING NICKEL-CADMIUM BATTERIES
The scanner has a bu lt- n charg ng c rcu t that lets you recharge n ckel-
cadm um batter es wh le they are n the scanner.
To recharge the batter es wh le they are n the scanner, s mply connect
an AC or DC adapter nto the scanner's CHG jack (see "Us ng Standard AC
Power" or "Us ng Veh cle Battery Power").
Charg ng T ps
It takes about 10 to 18 hours to recharge batter es that are fully
d scharged. You can operate the scanner wh le recharg ng n ckel-cadm um
batter es, but the charg ng t me s lengthened.
N ckel-cadm um batter es last longer and del ver more power f you
regularly let them fully d scharge. To do th s, s mply use the scanner
unt l the low battery nd cator appears on the d splay. Then fully
charge the batter es.
IMPORTANT: Th s product s capable of us ng rechargeable n ckel-cadm um
batter es. At the end of the batter es' useful l fe, they
must be recycled or d sposed of properly. Contact your local,
county, or state hazardous waste management author t es for
nformat on on recycl ng or d sposal programs n your area.
Some opt ons that m ght be ava lable are: mun c pal curb-s de
collect on, drop-off boxes at reta lers, recycl ng collect on
centers, and ma l-back programs.
Us ng Standard AC Power
You can power your scanner from a standard AC outlet us ng an opt onal
AC adapter, such as Cat. No. 273-1665 (not suppl ed).
WARNING: Do not use an AC adapter's polar zed plug w th an extens on cord,
receptacle, or other outlet unless the blades can be fully
nserted to prevent blade exposure.
CAUTIONS: The recommended AC adapter suppl es 9 volts and del vers at
least 300 m ll amps. Also, ts center t p s set to negat ve
and ts plug properly f ts the scanner's PWR and CHR jack.
Us ng an adapter that does not meet these spec f cat ons could
damage the scanner or the adapter.
Be sure you connect the AC adapter to the scanner before you
connect t to a standard AC outlet. Then d sconnect the adapter
from the AC outlet before you d sconnect t from the scanner.
1. Plug the adapter's barrel plug nto PWR.

NOTE: If you nstalled rechargeable n ckel-cadm um batter es n the
scanner, remove the cap from the CHG jack and connect the AC adapter
to the jack. Th s powers the scanner and recharges the batter es at
the same t me (see "Charg ng N ckel-Cadm um Batter es").
2. Connect the adapter's power module to a standard AC outlet.
Us ng Veh cle Battery Power
You can power your scanner from your veh cle's battery power us ng an
opt onal DC auto adapter, such as Cat. No. 270-1560 (not suppl ed).
CAUTIONS: The scanner s des gned to work n a veh cle that has a 12-volt
DC, negat ve-ground electr cal system. If you are not sure
about your veh cle, check w th your veh cle's dealer.
The recommended DC auto adapter suppl es 9 volts and del vers
at least 300 m ll amps. Also, ts center t p s set to negat ve
and ts plug properly f ts the scanner's PWR and CHR jack.
Us ng an adapter that does not meet these spec f cat ons could
damage the scanner or the adapter.
To protect your veh cle's electr cal system, be sure you connect
the adapter to the scanner before you connect t to the
c garette-l ghter socket. Then d sconnect the adapter from the
c garette-socket before you d sconnect t from the scanner.
1. Set the adapter's voltage sw tch to 9V.
2. Connect the adapter's orange barrel plug to the adapter's cable w th
the t p set to - (negat ve).
3. Plug the adapter's barrel plug nto PWR.
NOTE: If you nstalled rechargeable n ckel-cadm um batter es n the
scanner, remove the cap from the CHG jack and connect the DC auto
adapter to the jack. Th s powers the scanner and recharges the
batter es at the same t me (see "Charg ng N ckel-Cadm um
Batter es").
4. Plug the other end of the adapter nto your veh cle's c garette-
l ghter socket.
NOTE: If the scanner does not operate properly w th a DC auto adapter
connected to your veh cle's c garette-l ghter socket, you m ght
need to unplug the adapter and clean the socket to remove ashes and
other debr s.
Preparat on
CONNECTING THE SUPPLIED ANTENNA
1. Connect the suppl ed flex ble antenna's BNC connector to ANT on top
of the scanner.
2. Press down and rotate the base of the antenna clockw se unt l the
antenna locks nto place.
CONNECTING AN OPTIONAL ANTENNA

The suppl ed antenna s usually adequate for strong local s gnals.
However, for the best results, you can attach a mult -band outdoor antenna
(such as Cat. No. 20-013) to the scanner. If the coax al cable's connector
does not f t the ANT jack, you m ght also need an adapter. Your local
Rad o Shack store sells a complete l ne of outdoor antennas, adapters, and
connectors.
For the best performance, cons der the follow ng when dec d ng on an
outdoor base antenna and ts locat on:
The locat on of the antenna should be as h gh as poss ble.
The antenna and antenna cable should be as far away as poss ble from
sources of electr cal no se (appl ances, other rad os, and so on).
The antenna should be vert cal.
Mount the antenna follow ng the nstruct ons suppl ed w th the antenna
and ts mount ng hardware. Then route the antenna cable to the scanner,
and connect t to ANT on top of the scanner.
CAUTION: Do not route the cable over sharp edges or mov ng objects.
NOTE: Always use 50-ohm coax al cable to connect an outdoor antenna.
For lengths under 50 feet, use RG58 (Cat. No. 278-1314) or RG8/M
(Cat. No. 278-1313).
For lengths over 50 feet, use RG-8, low-loss coax al cable (Cat. No.
278-1312).
RESETTING THE SCANNER
When you f rst nstall the scanner's batter es, or when they are removed
for an extended per od of t me, the scanner's d splay m ght lock-up. If
th s happens, try resett ng the scanner.
CAUTION: S nce th s procedure clears all the nformat on programmed nto
the scanner, use t only when you are sure the scanner s not
work ng properly.
Follow these steps to reset the scanner.
1. If the scanner s on, turn VOLUME OFF/MAX counterclockw se unt l t
cl cks to turn t off.
2. Wh le you hold down both CLEAR and 0, turn VOLUME OFF/MAX clockw se
unt l t cl cks to turn on the scanner.
CONNECTING AN EARPHONE
For pr vate l sten ng, you can plug an opt onal earphone (such as Cat.
No. 33-175) nto the headphone jack on top of your scanner. Connect ng an
earphone automat cally d sconnects the nternal speaker.
NOTE: In a no sy area, monaural headphones (such as Cat. No. 20-210)
m ght prov de more comfortable l sten ng.
L sten ng Safely
To protect your hear ng, follow these gu del nes when you use an earphone.
Set the volume to the lowest sett ng before you beg n l sten ng. After

you beg n l sten ng, adjust the volume to a comfortable level.
Do not l sten at extremely h gh volume levels. Extended h gh-volume
can lead to permanent hear ng loss.
Once you set the volume, do not ncrease t. Over t me, your ears
adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause
d scomfort m ght st ll damage your hear ng.
Traff c Safety
Do not wear an earphone wh le operat ng a motor veh cle or r d ng a
b cycle. Th s can create a traff c hazard and s llegal n some areas.
Even though some earphones are des gned to let you hear some outs de sounds
when l sten ng at normal volume levels, they st ll present a traff c
hazard.
CONNECTING AN EXTERNAL SPEAKER
In a no sy area, a properly placed external speaker (such as Cat. No.
21-549) or an ampl f ed speaker (such as Cat. No. 21-541) m ght make
l sten ng eas er. Plug the speaker cable's 1/8- nch m n -plug nto the
scanner's headphone jack.
USING THE BELT CLIP
You can use the belt cl p for hands-free carry ng when you are on the go.
Sl de the belt cl p over your belt or wa stband.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR SCANNER
A LOOK AT THE KEYPAD
A qu ck look at the scanner's keypad w ll help you understand each key's
funct on.
Control Funct on
KEYLOCK D sables the keypad (except for the SCAN, MANUAL, and
LIGHT keys) to prevent acc dental program changes.
SCAN Starts scann ng through the stored channels.
PRI Turns the pr or ty funct on on and off.
L/OUT Turns the selected channel's lockout funct on on and
off.
DELAY Turns the selected channel's delay funct on on and
off.
LIGHT Turns the d splay back l ght on and off.
MANUAL Stops scann ng and lets you manually enter a channel
number or frequency.
LIMIT Turns on the l m t search mode and sets the
frequency range.
Up, Down Selects the d rect on n the search, program, scan,
or manual modes.

MON Accesses the 10 mon tor memor es.
Number Each key has a s ngle-d g t label and a range of
Keys numbers.
Use the d g ts on the keys to enter the number for a
channel or a frequency.
Use the range of numbers above the key (for example
81-100) to select the channels n a channel-storage
bank (see "Understand ng Channel Storage Banks").
ENTER Stores a frequency n a channel.
DIRECT/. Turns on the d rect search mode or enters a dec mal
po nt (necessary when programm ng frequenc es).
AM/FM/ Sw tches the scanner between the AM, FM, or WFM
WFM modes.
PGM Sets the scanner so you can store frequenc es nto
channels.
CLEAR Clears an ncorrect entry and s used when resett ng
the scanner.
A LOOK AT THE DISPLAY
A look at the scanner's d splay w ll help you understand what each
nd cator means.

Up or Down Shows the search d rect on n the search mode and
the scann ng d rect on n the scan, program, and
manual modes.

search.
SRCH The scanner s search ng up or down the frequency
bands.
SCAN The scanner s scann ng up or down the channels.
MAN You manually selected a channel.

PGM You are stor ng frequenc es nto the scanner's
channels.
PRI The pr or ty channel funct on s on.
DLY The scanner s mon tor ng a channel you pre-
programmed w th the delay funct on.
L/O The scanner s mon tor ng a channel you locked
out of the scan mode.
Lo You are programm ng the lowest frequency for a
l m t search.
H You are programm ng the h ghest frequency for
a l m t search.
BATTERY-SAVING CIRCUIT
If the scanner does not detect a s gnal w th n 5 seconds any t me after
you manually select a channel or frequency, the scanner enters the
battery-sav ng standby mode.
In the standby mode, the scanner rests for 1 second then checks for a
s gnal for 1/2 second, us ng only 40 percent of the normal power
consumpt on. The scanner cont nues th s unt l you press any button or
f rece ves a s gnal.
UNDERSTANDING MEMORY
You can store up to 210 frequenc es nto your scanner's memory. You can
store each frequency nto e ther a permanent memory, called a channel, or
a temporary memory, called a mon tor memory. Your scanner has 200 channel
memor es and 10 mon tor memor es.
CHANNEL MEMORIES
To make t eas er to group and select channels, they are d v ded nto
10 channel-storage banks of 20 channels each.
You can use each channel-storage bank to group frequenc es by s m lar
organ zat ons (see "Gu de to the Act on Bands"). For example:

You can also group channels by c ty or by local area.
MONITOR MEMORIES
The scanner also has 10 mon tor memor es. Use these memor es to
temporar ly store frequenc es wh le you dec de whether or not to save
them n channels. Th s s handy for qu ckly stor ng an act ve frequency
when you search through an ent re frequency band. You can manually select
these memor es, but you cannot scan them (see "Search ng for and

Temporar ly Stor ng Act ve Frequenc es").
Operat on
SETTING THE VOLUME AND SQUELCH
1. Turn SQUELCH fully clockw se.
2. Turn VOLUME OFF/MAX clockw se to about half way. The scanner turns
off.
3. Turn SQUELCH counterclockw se unt l you hear a h ss ng no se.
4. Adjust VOLUME OFF/MAX to a comfortable level.
5. Slowly turn SQUELCH clockw se unt l the h ss ng no se stops.
NOTES: If squelch s set too low, the scanner can p ck up unwanted or weak
transm ss ons. When th s happens, sl ghtly turn SQUELCH clockw se
to decrease the scanner's sens t v ty to weaker s gnals.
If squelch s set too h gh, the scanner m ght not p ck up any
transm ss ons. When th s happens, sl ghtly turn SQUELCH counter-
clockw se to ncrease the scanner's sens t v ty.
SEARCHING FOR AND TEMPORARILY STORING ACTIVE FREQUENCIES
You can set your scanner to search for:
Transm ss ons w th n a l m ted range of spec f ed frequenc es
(l m t search).
Transm ss ons start ng from a des gnated frequency (d rect search).
When the scanner f nds an act ve frequency, you can qu ckly store t n
one of the 10 mon tor memor es.
NOTE: Your scanner rounds down the entered frequency to the nearest val d
frequency. For example, f you try to enter 151.473, the scanner
accepts t as 151.470.
Dur ng a l m t search, the scanner searches upward start ng from a selected
lower frequency l m t, or downward start ng from a selected upper frequency
l m t.
1. Press PGM, then LIMIT. Lo appears on the d splay.
2. Enter the lowest frequency n the des red frequency search range, then
press ENTER.
3. Press LIMIT, H appears on the d splay.
4. Enter the h ghest frequency n the des red frequency search range,
then press ENTER.
5. To search up or down:
One step (5, 12.5, or 50 kHz) at a t me - qu ckly press and release up
or down.

Cont nuously, unt l the scanner f nds an act ve frequency - press and
hold up or down for about a second.
- L - and SRCH appear on the d splay, an nd cator flashes under the
next ava lable mon tor memory, and the scanner searches through the
spec f ed frequency range e ther upward (from the lowest selected
frequency), or downward (from the h ghest selected frequency).
NOTE: Wh le search ng e ther upward or downward, when the scanner
reaches a spec f ed l m t (e ther upper or lower), t
automat cally sk ps to the start ng frequency and cont nues
search ng.
6. When the scanner stops on an act ve frequency, you can e ther:
Press MON to store t n the next ava lable mon tor memory, or
Press and hold UP or DOWN for about a second to cont nue the search.
7. To stop cont nuous search ng, wh le UP or DOWN SRCH appears on the
d splay, press UP or DOWN unt l the UP or DOWN symbol d sappears.
DIRECT SEARCH
Dur ng a d rect search, the scanner searches upward or downward, start ng
from a spec f ed frequency or stored channel.
NOTE: "PRIORITY" must be turned OFF n order to start a "D rect Search".
1. To start a d rect search from a spec f ed frequency:
a. Press PGM.
b. Enter the des red frequency.
NOTE: Do not om t d g ts (except the last zeros) after the dec mal
po nt. The frequency must be fully entered for the scanner to
start the d rect search.
c. Press DIRECT.
To start a d rect search from a stored channel:
a. Press MANUAL or PGM.
b. Enter the des red channel number.
c. Press MANUAL or PGM aga n.
d. Press DIRECT.
2. To search up or down:
One step (5, 12.5, 25, or 50 kHz) at a t me start ng from the spec f ed
frequency or channel - qu ckly press and release up or down.
Cont nuously unt l the scanner f nds an act ve frequency - press
and hold up or down for about a second.
- d - and SRCH appear on the d splay, an nd cator flashes under the
next ava lable mon tor memory, and the scanner searches e ther upward

3. When the scanner stops on an act ve frequency, you can:
Press MON to store t n the next ava lable mon tor memory, or
Press and hold UP or DOWN for about a second to cont nue the search.
4. To stop cont nuous search ng, wh le UP or DOWN SRCH appears on the
d splay, press UP or DOWN unt l UP or DOWN d sappears.
LISTENING TO A MONITOR MEMORY
To l sten to a mon tor memory, press MANUAL, MON, then the number key of
the des red mon tor memory.
NOTE: You cannot scan mon tor memor es.
STORING FREQUENCIES INTO CHANNELS
Your scanner has 10 channel storage banks, each w th 20 storage areas
called channels, where you can permanently store a total of 200
frequenc es. You can e ther move a mon tor memory to a channel, or you
can manually enter a frequency to store t.
Mov ng a Frequency from a Mon tor Memory to a Channel
Follow these steps to move a mon tor memory to a channel.
1. Press MANUAL, enter the channel number you want to store frequency n,
then press PGM.
2. Press MON, then enter the number of the mon tor memory that has the
frequency you want to store nto the channel.
3. Press ENTER. The scanner stores the frequency nto the selected
channel.
Manually Stor ng Frequenc es nto Channels
Good reference for act ve frequenc es are Rad o Shack's "Pol ce Call Rad o
Gu de Includ ng F re and Emergency Serv ces," "Off c al Aeronaut cal
Frequency D rectory," and "Mar t me Frequency D rectory." We update these
d rector es every year, so be sure to get a current copy. See also "Gu de
to the Act on Bands" n the manual.
Follow these steps to manually store a frequency nto a channel.
1. Press MANUAL. MAN appears on the d splay.
2. Enter a channel number then press PGM. The selected channel number
and PGM appear on the d splay.
3. To enter a frequency, enter the f rst d g ts (up to 3), press symbol,
enter the last d g ts (up to 4) then ENTER.
For example, to enter the frequency 166 MHz:

NOTES: The scanner cont nuously mon tors the most recently stored channel.
ERROR appears on the d splay when you enter a frequency not w th-
n the scanner's bands (see "Spec f cat ons"). To erase an error,
press CLEAR then repeat Step 3.
4. To program the next channel n sequence, press PGM and repeat Step 3.
NOTE: To change the d rect on t sequences n, press UP or DOWN before
you press PGM.
To program more channels n any sequence, repeat Steps 2 and 3.
SCANNING THE STORED CHANNELS
1. Press UP or DOWN to select the scan d rect on.
NOTE: When you f rst turn on the scanner, the scan d rect on s always
UP.
2. Press SCAN.
The scanner scans through all non-locked channels n the act vated banks
(see "Turn ng Channel-Storage Banks On and Off" and "Lock ng Out a
Channel").
NOTE: If the scanner does not scan, re-adjust SQUELCH.
TURNING CHANNEL-STORAGE BANKS ON AND OFF
A more eff c ent way to scan s to turn off storage banks you do not want
to scan. For example, f you wanted to scan only current pol ce act v ty,
you would not want the scanner to scan, f nd, and waste t me mon tor ng
channels n other banks that d d not nclude pol ce frequenc es, Instead,
you can turn off the other n ne channel-storage banks.
Wh le scann ng, press the number key for the bank you want to turn on or
off. The bank nd cator turns on or off.
If the bank nd cator s on, the scanner scans all channels w th n that
bank that are not nd v dually locked out (see "Lock ng Out a Channel").
If the nd cator s off, the scanner does not scan any of the 20 channels
w th n that bank.
NOTES: You can manually select any channel n a bank, even f the bank s
turned off.

You cannot turn off all banks. At least one bank must always
be act ve.
MANUALLY SELECTING A CHANNEL/FREQUENCY
Select ng a Channel
You can cont nuously mon tor a spec f c channel w thout scann ng. Th s s
useful f you want to hear a broadcast on a channel and do not want to m ss
any deta ls (even though there m ght be per ods of s lence) or f you want
to mon tor a locked-out channel (see "Lock ng Out a Channel").
If the scanner s stopped at a channel you want to cont nue l sten ng to,
qu ckly press MANUAL once before t cont nues scann ng aga n.
NOTES: Press ng MANUAL add t onal t mes makes the scanner step through
the channels.
To change the channel step d rect on, press UP or DOWN before you
press MANUAL add t onal t mes.
If the scanner s scann ng:
1. Press MANUAL to stop the scann ng.
2. Enter the des red channel number
3. Press MANUAL aga n.
If the scanner s not scann ng, enter the des red channel number then
press MANUAL.
Select ng a Frequency
You can manually select a des red frequency. Th s s useful f you want
to mon tor a frequency you have not stored, or a frequency stored n a
locked-out channel (see "Lock ng Out a Channel").
1. If the scanner s scann ng, press MANUAL to stop the scann ng.
2. Enter the des red frequency.
3. Press DIRECT. The scanner cont nuously mon tors the selected
frequency.
USING PRIORITY
The pr or ty feature lets you scan through the programmed channels, and
st ll not m ss an mportant or nterest ng call on a des gnated channel.
To use the pr or ty feature, you need to des gnate a stored channel f rst
and then turn the pr or ty feature on.
Des gnat ng a Channel
1. Press PGM.
2. Enter the des red channel number.
NOTES: You can des gnate any stored channel as the pr or ty channel, but
you can have only one pr or ty channel at a t me.
To "undes gnate" a pr or ty channel, e ther des gnate another

channel or turn the pr or ty feature off.
3. Press PRI.
Turn ng the Pr or ty Feature On/Off
To turn on the pr or ty feature, press PRI dur ng scann ng. PRI appears
on the d splay. The scanner checks the pr or ty channel every 2 seconds
and stays on the channel f there s act v ty. P appears to the left
of the d splay whenever the scanner mon tors the pr or ty channel.
To turn off the pr or ty feature, press PRI. PRI d sappears from the
d splay.
USING DELAY
Many agenc es use a two-way rad o system that m ght have a pause between a
query and a reply. To avo d m ss ng a reply, you can program a 2-second
delay nto a channel or a frequency. When your scanner stops on a channel
or frequency w th a programmed delay, t cont nues to mon tor t for 2
seconds after every transm ss on before the scanner resumes scann ng or
search ng.
To program a 2-second delay:
If the scanner s n the scan mode and stopped on the des red channel,
qu ckly press DELAY before t cont nues scann ng aga n. DLY appears on
the d splay.
If the scanner s not stopped on the des red channel, manually select the
des red channel, then press DELAY, DLY appears on the d splay.
If the scanner s n the search mode, press DELAY. DLY appears on the
d splay and the scanner programs a 2-second delay nto all the frequenc es
t f nds.
To turn off the 2-second delay on any channel or frequency, press DELAY
wh le the scanner s mon tor ng the channel or frequency. DLY d sappears
from the d splay.
LOCKING OUT A CHANNEL
You can scan channels faster by lock ng out spec f c channels you do not
want to mon tor, such as a cont nuously act ve weather channel.
1. Press MANUAL. MAN appears on the d splay.
2. Enter the des red channel number.
3. Press MANUAL aga n.
4. Press L/OUT so L/O appears on the d splay.
When t scans, the scanner sk ps the locked out channel.
NOTES: There must be at least one act ve channel n each bank. You
cannot lock out all channels.
You can st ll manually select locked-out channels.
To unlock a channel, manually select the channel then press L/OUT so
L/O d sappears from the d splay.

USING THE LIGHT
Wh le the scanner s on, press LIGHT to l ght the d splay for 5 seconds.
Press any key other than LIGHT wh le the backl ght s on to keep the
d splay l t for another 5 seconds. To turn off the backl ght before t
automat cally turns off, press LIGHT.
TURNING THE KEY TONE ON/OFF
Each t me you press any of the scanner's keys a tone sounds to ver fy that
the scanner has correctly accepted your entry.
To turn the scanner's key tone on or off, f rst turn off the scanner. Then
wh le you press and hold 2 and ENTER, turn VOLUME OFF/MAX clockw se unt l
the d splay appears.
USING THE KEYLOCK
Once you program your scanner, you can protect t from acc dental program
changes by sl d ng KEYLOCK to the r ght.
The only controls that operate n the keylock mode are SCAN, MANUAL, LIGHT,
VOLUME, and SQUELCH. When you want to change the scanner's programm ng,
sl de KEYLOCK to the left.
CHANGING THE AM/FM/WFM RECEIVE MODE
The scanner scans n the follow ng modes:
AM (ampl tude modulat on) - Used n a rcraft bands and
amateur rad o band.
FM (narrowband frequency modulat on) - Used n act on bands such as
pol ce, f re, ambulance, amateur
rad o, etc.
WFM (w deband frequency modulat on) - Used n commerc al FM broadcasts
and telev s on sound.
The scanner s preset to the most common AM/FM/WFM rece ve mode for each
frequency range. The preset modes are:

The preset mode s correct n most cases. However, some ham rad o and
m l tary a rcraft broadcasts do not operate n the preset mode. If you try
to l sten to a broadcast when the scanner s not set to the correct rece ve
mode, the broadcast m ght sound weak or d storted.

To change the mode, press AM/FM/WFM. AM, FM, or WFM bl nks on the d splay
to nd cate that the d splayed rece ve mode has been changed from the
preset mode.
NOTES: If you change any frequency band's rece ve mode dur ng a l m t or
d rect search, the scanner no longer uses any of the preset rece ve
modes. Instead, the scanner searches for frequenc es n all the
bands n the selected mode.
If you change the band mode to WFM dur ng frequency search, your
scanner automat cally searches frequenc es at 50 kHz steps.
To return to the default sett ngs, press and hold down CLEAR then press
AM/FM/WFM.

A GENERAL GUIDE TO SCANNING
Recept on of the frequenc es covered by your scanner s ma nly "l ne-of-
s ght." Th s means you usually cannot hear stat ons that are beyond the
hor zon.
Dur ng the summer months, you m ght be able to hear stat ons n the 30-50
MHz range located several hundred or even thousands of m les away. Th s
s because of summer atmosphere cond t ons. Th s type of recept on s
unpred ctable but often very nterest ng!

B rd e Frequenc es
B rd e are operat ng frequenc es generated and used ns de the scanner's
rece ver. These operat ng frequenc es could nterfere w th broadcasts

If you program one of these frequenc es, you hear only no se on that
frequency. If the nterference s not severe, you m ght be able to turn
SQUELCH clockw se to cut out the b rd e. The most common b rd es to

To f nd your spec f c scanner's b rd es, beg n by d sconnect ng the antenna

and mov ng t away from the rece ver. Make sure that no other nearby rad o
or TV sets are tuned on. Use the search funct on and scan every frequency
band from ts lowest frequency to the h ghest. Occas onally, the search ng
w ll stop as f t has found a s gnal, often w thout any sound. That s a
b rd e. Make a l st of all the b rd es n your part cular scanner for
future reference.

In the Un ted States, there are several broadcast bands. The standard AM
and FM bands are probably the most well known. There are also four
telev s on aud o broadcasts bands - the lower three transm t on the VHF
band and the fourth transm ts on the UHF band.
