Introduction
Thisuserguidedescribeshowtoinstall,connectandmaintainyour
HDDigitalRadomeAntenna.Themodelscoveredare:
•RD418HD-18”4kWDigitalRadomeAntenna.
•RD424HD-24”4kWDigitalRadomeAntenna.
Whenproperlyinstalledandoperated,theuseofthisradar
conformsto:
•IEEEC95.1-2005-StandardforSafetyLevelswithrespectto
HumanExposuretoRadioFrequencyElectromagneticFields,
3kHzto300GHz.
•ICNIRPGuidelines1998-InternationalCommissionon
Non-IonisingRadiationProtection:Guidelinesforlimiting
exposuretotime-varyingelectric,magneticandelectro-magnetic
elds(upto300GHz)1998.
TheHDDigitalRadomeAntennaisdesignedandmanufacturedto
meettherigorousdemandsofthemarineenvironment.However,
itmustbeinstalled,operatedandmaintainedproperly.Please
carefullyreadandfollowtherecommendedproceduresinthisuser
guide.

–WidescreenversionsofC-SeriesMFDs.
–AllversionsofE-seriesMFDs.

Note:Somelimitationsoffunctionalityintheabovesystemsmay
occur,dependingonthesoftwarestatus.
Displaysoftware
AfterttinganHDDigitalRadomeAntenna,i.e.beforeitisused,
youmustensurethatanyassociatedmulti-functiondisplay(MFD),
isusingthelatestsoftwareversion.

TochecktheMFDsoftwareversion,switchontheMFDandcheck
theversionnumberonthenavigationwarningscreen.Notethatifa
scannerisnotconnected,theversionnumberwillonlybedisplayed
for10seconds.
YoucandownloadthelatestMFDsoftware,fromtheRaymarine
website,atwww.raymarine.com.Informationonhowtousethe
downloadtoupdatetheMFDsoftware,isalsoavailableonthe
Raymarinewebsite.Additionalsupportinformationisavailablefrom
Raymarinetechnicalsupport.

EMCinstallationguidelines
Raymarineequipmentandaccessoriesconformtotheappropriate
ElectromagneticCompatibility(EMC)regulations,tominimize
electromagneticinterferencebetweenequipmentandminimizethe
effectsuchinterferencecouldhaveontheperformanceofyour
system
CorrectinstallationisrequiredtoensurethatEMCperformanceis
notcompromised.
ForoptimumEMCperformancewerecommendthatwherever
possible:
•Raymarineequipmentandcablesconnectedtoitare:
–Atleast1m(3ft)fromanyequipmenttransmittingorcables
carryingradiosignalse.g.VHFradios,cablesandantennas.
InthecaseofSSBradios,thedistanceshouldbeincreased
to7ft(2m).
–Morethan2m(7ft)fromthepathofaradarbeam.Aradar
beamcannormallybeassumedtospread20degreesabove
andbelowtheradiatingelement.
•Theproductissuppliedfromaseparatebatteryfromthatused
forenginestart.Thisisimportanttopreventerraticbehavior
anddatalosswhichcanoccuriftheenginestartdoesnothave
aseparatebattery.
•Raymarinespeciedcablesareused.
•Cablesarenotcutorextended,unlessdoingsoisdetailedin
theinstallationmanual.
Note:Whereconstraintsontheinstallationpreventanyof
theaboverecommendations,alwaysensurethemaximum
possibleseparationbetweendifferentitemsofelectrical
equipment,toprovidethebestconditionsforEMCperformance
throughouttheinstallation

TheHDDigitalRadomeAntennamustbesuppliedwithpowerby
eithera12Vdcora24Vdcsupply.DoNOTconnecttoa32V
system.
IfyouarereplacinganexistingRadomescannerwithanHDDigital
RadomeAntenna,youmustalsoreplaceanyexistingcablewiththe
appropriatedigitalcable,asdescribedinsection2.7Cables.
Ifyouconnecttothepowersupplyviaanisolatorswitch,the
minimumswitchratingis:
•Fora12Vsystem,20A.
•Fora24Vsystem,15A.
Caution:DoNOTconnecttopositive

Powercablelengths
Thetotalpermittedlengthsofpowerconductorrun(i.e.powercable
pluscableextension)fromthepowersourcetotheHDDigital
RadomeAntennaare:
•for12Vsystems,20m(65ft)
•for24Vsystems,35m(115ft)
Ifyouwanttoconnecttoa12Vpowersystembutatotalpower
conductorrunofmorethan20misnecessary,theuseofasuitable
voltageconverterisrecommended,toconvertthe12Vsupply
voltageto24V,andthusenableyoutoextendtherunupto35m.
Werecommendusingaconverterwithaminimum200Woutput
capacity.
Grounding
ThesegroundingrequirementsareapplicableforRaymarine
equipmentsuppliedwithaseparatedrainwireorscreen.
•Theproductpowercabledrainconductor(screen)mustbe
connectedtoacommongroundpoint.
•Itisrecommendedthatthecommongroundpointisabonded
ground,i.e.withthegroundpointconnectedtobatterynegative,
andsituatedascloseaspossibletothebatterynegativeterminal.
Ifabondedgroundsystemisnotpossible,anon-bondedRF
groundmaybeused.

equivalentstrandedwireconductormaybeused,ratedasfollows:
•forrunsof<1m(3ft),use6mm2(#10AWG)orgreater.

Inanygroundingsystem,alwayskeepthelengthofconnecting
braidorwiresasshortaspossible.

totheantennacouldoccur.Ifnecessary,use
shimsorextrawasherstopreventthishappening.

underseagoingconditions.
•MeetstherequirementsdescribedunderAntennaPosition

signalandpowerconnectionpoints:
•RunthesignalconnectortotheappropriateMFD.
•Runthepowercabletoasuitable12Vor24Vconnectionpoint
ontheboat’spowersystem.Werecommendconnectionismade
attheboatspowerdistributionpanel,whereverpossible.
Caution:Pullingcables
DoNOTusecordsorropes,attachedtocable
connectors,topullcablesthroughrestricted
apertures(e.g.asinbulkheads),asthiscould
causedamagetocables.
Routingcables
Cablesmustberoutedcorrectly,tomaximizeperformanceand
prolongcablelife.
•DoNOTbendcablesexcessively.Whereverpossible,ensurea
minimumbendradiusof100mm.

•otherequipmentandcables,
•highcurrentcarryingacanddcpowerlines,
•antennae.
Connectingantenna
Ensuringthatthearrowonthedigitalcableconnectorisaligned
withtheredtriangularmarkontheHDDigitalRadomeAntenna
connector,connectthedigitalcabletotheconnectorontheHD
DigitalRadomeAntenna,andfullyhand-tighten.DoNOTusea
wrenchoranyothertool.
Note:Iftheantennaconnectorisdisconnectedafterinitial
installation,werecommendthatbeforereconnecting,youlightly
coattheconnectorthreadwithRenolitAqua2Calciumgrease.
Connectingsignal
Referringtotheconnectioninformationforthemulti-functiondisplay
(MFD)towhichyouareconnecting,andtotheTypicalsystems
diagramsgivenhere,connectthedigitalcablesignalconnector
totheappropriateMFD.
