PRODUCT INSPECTION

Prior to unpacking the RDR43x0-IS series portable radio, please

inspect the packaging for signs of damage and report any damage

or missing components immediately to your RCA Communications

System Sales and Service Center. Every RDR43x0-IS series portable

Preparing Your Radio for Initial Use Setting Up Your Charger

1. Plug the adapter’s AC connector into the AC outlet socket. (see

image A)

2. Plug the adapter’s DC connector into the DC socket on the back of

the charger. (see image B)

3. Place the radio with the battery attached, or the battery alone, in the

charger. (see image C)

4. Make sure the battery contact is touching the charging terminals.

The charging process begins when the red LED light illuminates.

5. The green LED light will illuminate approximately two hours later,

indicating the battery is fully charged.

Battery Storage

1. Fully charge the battery before storing it for an extended period of

time to avoid battery damage due to over-discharge.

2. Recharge a battery after three months storage to avoid reduced

battery capacity due to over-discharge.

3. When storing a battery, keep it in a dry place at room temperature.

Attaching the Battery

1. Place the battery on the back of the radio. (See Figure 1)

2. Press the battery down (See Figure 2) until the battery clicks into

place. Note: If the battery is not securely locked, remove it and

reattach it.

Attaching / Removing the Antenna

1. With the radio turned o, set the antenna in its receptacle and turn

clockwise until it is screwed down. (See Figure 3)

2. To remove the antenna, turn the radio o and turn the antenna

counterclockwise.

Note: Same for all RDR43x0 Series Radios.

Battery Information

Charging the Battery

Your radio is powered by a Lithium-Ion (Lilon) battery. To avoid damage

and comply with warranty terms, charge the battery using only an

original RCA charger, exactly as described in the charger user guide.

When the charger’s LED illuminates red, it is an indication that the

battery is being correctly charged. When the LED illuminates green,

the battery charge is complete.

Note: Charge a new battery 12 to 14 hours before initial use for best

performance. Maximum battery capacity is normally achieved after

two or three full charge / discharge cycles.

Caution: To reduce the risk of injury, use only batteries speciﬁed by

RCA Communications Systems.

– To avoid risk of personal injury, do not dispose of batteries in a ﬁre. -

Dispose of batteries according to local recycling regulations. Do not

dispose as household waste.

– Never attempt to disassemble the battery.

– When charging a battery, keep it at a temperature between 41°F ~

104°F (5°C ~ 40°C) to ensure a full charge. Temperatures outside

this range signiﬁcantly reduce battery life. The operating time (talk-

time and standby time) is noticeably shorter than normal, replace

the battery.

– Before charging a battery attached to a radio, turn the radio o to

ensure a full charge. Never leave a radio on while in the charger, as

it can damage both the battery and the radio; the charger is not a

radio stand.

– Do not cut o the power supply or remove battery while charging.

– Never charge a battery that is wet. Dry it with soft cloth prior

charging.

– The battery will eventually weaken. When the operating time (talk-

time and standby time) becomes noticeably shorter than normal,

replace the battery.

– Battery performance greatly decreases at temperatures below -4°F

(-20°C). Having a spare battery is always necessary in extremely

cold environments. A cold battery may work again when it returns to

room temperature, so keep it for later use.

– Dust on the battery contact may cause the battery not to work or

charge properly. Use a clean dry cloth to wipe it before attaching

the battery to the radio.

– Batteries with damaged contacts can be extremely dangerous. Any

battery with damage to one or more contacts should be replaced

immediately and not used under any circumstances.

Attaching / Removing the Belt Clip

Using a small screwdriver, align the belt clip’s screw holes to the

radio’s chassis. Attach by turning the screws clockwise into the belt

clip’s screw holes. Remove by doing the reverse. (See Figure 4)

Programmable Buttons

Your RCA Communications Systems Dealer can program the

programmable buttons as shortcuts to radio functions or preset

channels/groups depending on the duration of a button press:

Short Press - Press and release quickly.

Long Press - Press and hold for the programmed duration (between 1

seconds and 3.75 seconds).

Connecting Audio Accessories

The accessory connector is located on the side of the radio. It is used

to connect RCA audio accessories to the radio. Remove the accessory

cover by unscrewing the screw location at the bottom of the cover.

Connect the desired audio accessory ﬁrmly into the accessory jack

and secure the screw by turning it clockwise. (See Figure 5)

Note: Please loosen the screw prior to removing the audio accessory.

The use of the audio accessory may aect the waterproof performance

of the radio.

None - No function is assigned to this key.

Outgoing Calls Log - Enter radio’s outgoing call log menu.

Channel Display - The radio can display the Channel Alias or the

Channel Frequency. Toggles between Alias and Frequency.

Channel Down - Switches Up through the available channels.

Channel Up - Switches Down through the available channels.

Direct Channel Entry - Enters the direct channel entry mode, which

allows for a channel number to be entered for the radio to switch to

rather than using the Channel Knob or Up / Down keys. (Full Keypad

radio models Only!)

Disconnect - hangs up the call.

Emergency O - Terminates an outgoing emergency. This is the

recommended option for the Orange Button.

Emergency On- Initiates an emergency. This is the recommended

option for the Orange Button.

Encryption On/O - Toggles between Encryption On and O for the

selected channel.

GPS Location On/O - Toggles between GPS On and O for the radio.

GPS Location Report - Sends GPS location data report to the preset

target Base Station.

Inbox - Enter radio’s messages inbox menu.

Keypad Unlock - Unlocks the keypad. (Full Keypad radio models Only!)

Last Record - Plays last recorded voice call.

Lock BS - Enable cell reselection (Trunking Mode Only)

Lone Worker On/O - Toggles between Lone Worker On and O for

the radio.

Turn On/O the Radio

1. Rotate the On/O/Volume Control Knob clockwise until you hear a

click. (See Figure 6) The LED blinks green, indicating that the power

up test is successful. The RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ radio displays

“RCA” after powering on.

2. To turn o the radio, rotate this knob counterclockwise until you

hear a click.

Note: There is no power up tone if the radio tones/alerts function is

disabled. If your radio does not power up, check your battery. Make

sure that it is charged and properly attached. If your radio still does not

power up, contact your RCA Communications Systems dealer.

Adjusting the Volume

To increase the volume, turn the On/O/ Volume Control Knob

clockwise. To decrease the volume, turn this knob counterclockwise.

Note: Same for all RDR43x0 Series Radios.

Man Down On/O - Toggles between Man Down On and O for the

radio.

Monitor On/O - Toggles between Monitor On and O for the channel.

Next Record - Plays the next recorded voice call.

Nuisance Temp Delete - Temporarily removes an unwanted channel

from the scan list, except the Selected Channel. The nuisance deleted

channel will be restored into the scan list, when radio is powered o

and back on again.

One Touch Access 1~15 - Allows the user to directly invoke the feature

set to the speciﬁc One Touch Access.

Power Low/High - Toggles between TX Power Low and High for the

radio.

Alerts / Tones Proﬁles - Quick access to the Alerts and Tones settings

menu.

Public Address On/O - Toggles between Public Address On and O

for the radio. (Mobile radios Only!)

Radio Mode Toggle Switch - Switches between the dierent radio

modes available for the radio. Conventional (Analog and DMR Digital),

DMR Digital Trunking.

Record Playback - Plays the selected recorded voice call.

Scan On/O - Toggles between Scan On and O for the channel.

Speaker Setting - Toggles and selects the default speaker for

broadcasting the audio. (Mobile radios Only!)

Status Message - Enters the Status Message menu.

TalkAround - Toggles between Repeater and TalkAround mode.

Text Message - Enters the Text Message menu.

Unlock BS - Disable cell reselection (Trunking Mode Only)

Voice Broadcast

Zone Down - Switches Down through the available zones.

Zone Toggle Switch - Toggles between the available zones.

Accessing the Programmed Functions (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™)

You can access various radio functions through one of the following

ways: A short or long press of the relevant programmable buttons.

1. To access the menu, press the button. Press the Up or Down

button to access the menu functions.

2. To select a function or enter a sub-menu, press the button.

3. To go back one menu level, or to return to the previous screen, press

the button. Press the button to return to the Home Screen.

Radio Keypad (RDR4390™ only)

You can use the alphanumeric keypad to access the radio features.

You can also use the keypad to enter subscriber numbers or IDs , and

text messages.

• Use the key to switch input method between numeric and

alphabetic (ABC or abc) mode. The symbol will be shown on the

upper right corner of the display.

• To input special character, switch to alphabetic mode, press and

use the direction key to select the character.

• To input space, switch to the alphabetic mode and press to

insert space.

Operational Status Indicators

Your radio indicates its operational status through the following:

• Display Icons (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™)

• Call Icons (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™)

• Sent Item Icons (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™)

• LED Indicator (Entire RDR43x0 Series)

• Audio Tones (Entire RDR43x0 Series)

Display Icons

The LCD display shows radio status, text entries, and menu entries.

The following are icons that appear on the radio’s display.

Received Signal Strength

Indicator (RSSI)

The number of bars displayed represents the radio

signal strength and is only displayed while the radio

is in receiving mode.

No Signal The radio has no signal and will not be able to

transmit or receive.

Power Level Radio is set at Low power. Radio is set at Medium

power. Radio is set at High power.

Operation Mode Radio is at Digital mode. Radio is at TMO mode.

Radio is set at Analog mode.

Battery The number of bars (0-5) shown indicates the charge

remaining in the battery.

Low Battery Radio is low in battery.

Unread Message The Radio has unread message(s) in the inbox.

Inbox Full The radio’s Inbox is full.

Silent Mode The radio is on silent.

Standard Mode The radio is on standard.

Custom Mode The radio is on custom.

Encryption Icon Encryption is on.

Encryption Icon Encryption is o or wrong encryption key.

Audio Accessory Icon Audio accessory is connected.

Call Status The radio is currently on the call with other radio(s).

LED Indicator

The LED Indicator shows the operational status of your radio.

Blinking Orange - Radio is scanning.

Solid Orange - Radio is powering up.

Blinking Red - Radio is low in battery.

Solid Red - Radio is transmitting.

Blinking Green - Radio is in standby mode.

Solid Green - Radio is receiving.

Note: When the LED is solid green, it indicates the radio detects activity

over the air. Due to the nature of the digital protocol, this activity may

or may not aect the radio’s programmed channel.

Selecting a Channel, Subscriber ID or Group ID

Once the required zone is displayed (if you have multiple zones in

your radio), turn the programmed Channel Selector Knob to select the

desired channel or by using the radio’s Menu navigate to the desired

subscriber alias or ID, or group alias or ID.

Audio Tones

Alert tones provide you with audible indications of the radio’s status or

the radio’s response to data received.

Selecting a Zone

Zones are groups of channels.

*RDR4330™ oers up to 2 zones with a maximum of 16 channels per

zone.

*RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ oers up to 64 zones with a maximum of 1000

channels per zone.

Change zones with radio’s function keys (RDR4330™) as programmed

by your RCA Communications Systems dealer or radio’s menu

(RDR4360™ / RDR4390™)

To select the appropriate zone, please follow these steps:

1. Using the Radio User Menu

1.1. Press button to access the menu.

1.2. Press or button to navigate to Zone, press to enter.

1.3. Press or button to select the appropriate zone, and

press to conﬁrm.

2. Using the Radio Option menu:

2.1. Press button to access the Option.

2.2. Press or button to navigate to Zone, press to enter.

2.3. Press or button to select the appropriate zone, and

press to conﬁrm.

• Shortcut key: you can toggle to the appropriate zone by pressing

the Zone Up or Zone Down key preset by your dealer. The shortcut

keys are customizable with RDR4360™/ RDR4390™ in the radio.

CONVENTIONAL MODE

Note: The functions described in this section are available only in

digital mode.

Making and Receiving Calls

Receiving and Responding to a Group Call

To receive a call from a group of users, your radio must be

conﬁgured as part of that group. When you receive a Group Call:

1. The LED indicator appear solid green.

2. The ﬁrst line of the display shows Individual Call. The second line

displays the subscriber alias or ID. (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ only)

3. Press the [PTT] button to respond to the call and the LED indicator

lights up red.

Note: If Talk Permit Function is enabled, wait for the Talk Permit

Tone to ﬁnish and then speak clearly into the microphone.

4. Release the [PTT] button to listen again.

5. If there is no voice activity for a set period of time, the call ends.

Receiving and responding to an Individual Call

A Private Call is a call from an individual radio to another individual

radio. There are two types of Individual Calls. The ﬁrst type is when a

radio presence check is performed prior to setting up the call, while

the other sets up the call immediately. When you receive an Individual

Call:

1. The LED indicator appear solid green.

2. The ﬁrst line of the display shows Individual Call. The second line

displays the subscriber alias or ID. (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ only)

3. Press the [PTT] button to respond to the

call and the LED indicator lights up red.

Note: If Talk Permit Function is enabled, wait for the Talk Permit

Tone to ﬁnish and then speak clearly into the microphone.

4. Release the [PTT] button to listen again.

5. If there is no voice activity for a set period of time, the call ends.

Making Call with Channel Selector Knob

Making a Group Call

1. To make a call to a group of users, your radio must be conﬁgured

as part of that group. Turn the Channel Selector Knob to select the

channel with the active group alias or ID.

2. Pressthe[PTT]buttontomakethecall.Whenthetargetradioresponds,

the LED lights up green. The ﬁrst line displays Group Call. The second

line displays subscriber alias or ID. (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ only)

Note: If Talk Permit Function is enabled, wait for the Talk Permit

Tone to ﬁnish, then speak clearly into the microphone.

3. Release the [PTT] button to listen.

4. If there is no voice activity for a predetermined period of time,

the call ends. The radio returns to the screen you were on prior to

initiating the call.

Receiving and All Call

An All Call is a call from an individual radio to every radio on the

channel. It is used to make important announcements requiring all

radio user’s full attention. When you receive an All Call:

1. The LED indicator appear solid green.

2. The ﬁrst line of the display shows All Call. The second line

displays the subscriber ID. (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ only)

Note: The radio stops receiving the All Call if you switch to a

dierent channel while receiving the call.

Making a Radio Call

You can select a channel, subscriber ID, or group by using:

• The channel Selector Knob

• The programmable buttons

• The contacts list

• Manual Dial (using contacts list)—This method is for Private Calls

only and is dialed using the keypad. (on RDR4390™)

Making an Individual Call

1. Turn the Channel Selector Knob to select the channel with the

active subscriber alias or ID.

2. Press [PTT] button to make the call. The LED lights up solid

red. The ﬁrst line displays Individual Call. The second line

displays subscriber alias or ID. (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ only)

Note: If Talk Permit Function is enabled, wait for the Talk Permit

Tone to ﬁnish and then speak clearly into the microphone.

3. Release [PTT] button to listen. When the target radio responds, the

LED lights up solid green.

4. If there is no voice activity for a predetermined period of time, the

call ends. The radio returns to the screen (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™

only) last viewed prior to initiating the call.

Making an All Call

This feature allows you to transmit to all users on a channel. Your radio

must be programmed to allow you to use this feature.

Turn the Channel Selector Knob to select the channel with the active

All Call group alias or ID.

Press [PTT] button to make the call. The LED lights up solid red and

the display (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ only) shows the All Call group alias

or ID.

Note: Users on the channel cannot respond to an All Call.

Making a Group or Individual Call with the One Touch Access Button

(RDR4390™ only)

The One Touch Access feature allows you to make a Group or Private

Call to a predeﬁned alias or ID easily. This feature can be assigned to a

short or long programmable button press. You can only have one alias

or ID assigned to a One Touch Access button. Your radio can have

multiple One Touch Access buttons programmed.

1. Press the programmed One Touch Access button to

make a Group or Individual Call to the predeﬁned alias

or ID. The display shows the group/subscriber alias or ID.

Note: If Talk Permit Function is enabled, wait for the Talk Permit

Tone to ﬁnish, then speak clearly into the microphone.

2. Press the Hangup Key once ﬁnish transmitting. When the target

radio responds, the LED lights up solid green.

3. If there is no voice activity for a predetermined period of time, the

calls end. Radio returns to the screen you were on prior to initiating

the call.

Emergency Operation

An Emergency Alarm is used to indicate a critical situation. You can

initiate an Emergency at any time on any screen (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™

only) display regardless of any activity on the current channel.

Note: This function is available only in digital mode.

Your radio supports 7 Emergency Alarms:

• Emergency Alarm

• Emergency Alarm with Emergency Call

Each alarm has the following default setting:

Disabled: Radio cannot transmit alarm signal, but can receive alarm

from other radios. Each alarm has the following types:

Regular: Radio transmits an alarm signal and shows audio and/or

visual indicators. Radio beeps rapidly.

Silent: Radio transmits an alarm signal without any audio or visual

indicators. There will be no response (call) from the target radio until

you press the [PTT] button to initiate the call.

Silent with Voice: Radio transmits an alarm signal and is able to receive

an incoming call, without any audio or visual indicators, until you press

the [PTT] button to initiate, or respond to the call.

Screen Flickering: Radio transmits an alarm signal and shows audio

and/or visual indicators. Radio display ﬂickers rapidly.

Regular and Screen Flickering: Radio transmits an alarm signal and

shows audio and/or visual indicators. Radio beeps and display ﬂickers

rapidly.

Advanced Features (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ only)

If enabled, this feature allows you to determine if another radio is

active in a system and remotely control the target radio if needed.

Sending a Call Alert

Enables the radio to be able to initiate a Call Alert using the digital

signaling system. (RDR4390 only).

To send call alert, please follow these steps:

1. Using the keypad:

1.1. Dial the radio ID using your keypad, press to select the

options.

1.2. Press or button to navigate to Control services, press

to enter.

1.3. Press or button to navigate to Call Alert, press to

send.

1.4. The display shows Call Alert indicating the request is sending

to the target radio. If the target radio is active in the system, the

display shows Success. If the target radio is not active in the

system, the radio beeps twice and the display brieﬂy shows Failed.

Receiving and responding to a Call Alert

When you receive a Call Alert page, on the display you see Press PTT

Call Back and the radio beeps rapidly. To respond to the call alert

follow the steps below:

1. Press [PTT] button to make the call. The LED lights up solid red.

The ﬁrst line displays Individual Call. The second line displays

subscriber alias or ID. (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ only) Note: If Talk

Permit Function is enabled, wait for the Talk Permit Tone to ﬁnish

and then speak clearly into the microphone.

2. Release [PTT] button to listen. When the target radio responds, the

LED lights up solid green.

Sending a Radio Check

Allows the radio to send a Radio Check request to another radio

to determine if the radio is active in a system without showing any

indication to the radio’s user. Both radios must be in communication

range:

1. Press button to access the menu.

2. Press or button to navigate to Contacts and press

button to select.

3. Press or button to select Individual Contacts and press

button to select.

4. Press or button to the required subscriber alias or ID and

press button to select.

5. Press or button to ﬁnd Control Services and press

button to select.

6. Press or button to ﬁnd Radio Check and press button

to select.

7. The display shows Radio Check indicating that radio check is in

progress. If the target radio is active in the system, the radio beeps

twice and the display brieﬂy shows Target Radio Available. If the

target radio is not active in the system, the radio beeps twice and

the display brieﬂy shows Target Radio Unavailable.

Remote Monitor

Allows the radio to send Remote Monitor command to another

radio. This command activates the receiving radio’s microphone

and transmitter for the duration speciﬁed for the receiving radio in

the Remote Monitor Hot Mic Time under the Decode Settings. The

receiving radio is controlled remotely without any indication given to

the receiving radio user.

Note: Your radio must be programmed by your RCA Communications

Systems dealer to allow you to use the Remote Monitor feature.

Initiating Remote Monitor

Use the programmed Remote Monitor button.

1. Press button to access the menu.

2. Press or button to navigate to Contacts and press

button to select.

3. Press or button to select Individual Contacts and press

button to select.

4. Press or button to the required subscriber alias or ID and

press button to select.

5. Press or button to ﬁnd Control Services and press

button to select.

6. Press or button to ﬁnd Radio Monitor and press button

to select.

7. The display shows Individual Call indicating that radio monitor is in

progress. If successful, the Hot Mic function is activated in the RX

radio, triggering an automatic individual call for the duration of the

preset Hot Mic time. Otherwise, the display shows Failed.

Radio Enable

Allows the radio to send a Radio Enable command to another radio to

remotely enable it after it has been previously disabled. This feature

helps to unlock the radio after it has been found.

1. Press button to access the menu.

2. Press or button to navigate to Contacts and press

button to select.

3. Press or button to select Individual Contacts and press

button to select.

4. Press or button to ﬁnd the required subscriber alias or ID

and press button to select.

5. Press or button to ﬁnd Control Services and press

button to select.

6. Press or button to ﬁnd Radio Enable and press button

to select.

7. The display shows Radio Enable and then Success, the target radio

has been enabled.

Radio Disable

Allows the radio to send a Radio Disable command to another radio to

remotely disable it. This feature helps to block usage of stolen or lost

radios.

Contacts Setting

Contacts provide an address book capabilities to your radio. Each

entry corresponds to an alias or ID that you use to initiate a call. The

entries are sorted in the order they are entered in the Contacts List.

Each entry is associated with a dierent call type: Group Call, Private

Call or All Call.

Note: You can add, delete, or edit contacts from the Digital Contacts

list.

Making a Group Call from Contacts

1. Press button to access the menu.

2. Press or button to navigate to Contacts and press

button to select.

3. Press or button to ﬁnd the Group Contacts and press

button to select.

4. Press or button to the required Group alias or ID and

press button to select.

5. Press [PTT] button to make the call. The LED lights up solid red.

The display shows Group Call and the group alias or ID

6. Release the [PTT] button to listen, when any user in the group

responds, the LED lights up solid green. You will see Group Call,

the group ID, and that user’s ID on your display.

7. If there is no voice activity for a programmed period of time, the

call ends.

Note: If Talk Permit function is enabled, wait for the Talk Permit

Tone to ﬁnish and then speak clearly into the microphone.

Call Log Feature

Your radio keeps track of all recent outgoing, answered, and missed

Individual Calls. Use the call log feature to view and manage recent

calls. You can Store an ID from the Call Log to Contacts or Delete it.

The Call Log lists are Outgoing, Incoming, and Missed.

Note: When you select a Call List and it contains no entries, the display

shows List Empty.

Accessing the Call Log

1. Using the programmed Call Log button.

2. Using the radio menu

2.1. Press button to access the menu.

2.2. Press or button to Call Logs and press button to

select.

2.3. Press or button to navigate to the desired list and

press button to select. The most recent entry is displayed

ﬁrst.

2.4. Use the or buttons to scroll through the list.

2.5. Press the [PTT] to initiate a call

Text Message Features (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ only)

Your radio is able to receive data such as a text message from another

radio.

Navigate to Messages

1. Press button to access the menu, press or button

to select Messages.

2. Press or button navigate to the New Message.

Note: Press button to enter and button at any time to

return to previous screen.

Making an Individual Call from Contacts

1. Press button to access the menu.

2. Press or button to navigate to Contacts and press

button to select.

3. Press or button to select Individual Contacts and press

button to select.

4. Press or button to navigate to desired subscriber alias or

ID and press button to select.

5. Press the [PTT] button to make the call. The LED lights up solid red.

The display shows Individual Call and the subscriber alias or ID

6. Release the [PTT] button to listen, when the target radio responds,

the LED lights up solid green and the display shows the transmitting

user’s ID.

7. If there is no voice activity for a programmed period of time, the

call ends.

Note: If Talk Permit function is enabled, wait for the Talk Permit

Tone to ﬁnish and then speak clearly into the microphone.

Storing an Alias or ID from the Missed Call List

1. While viewing an entry from the Call Log list, press to select.

2. Press or button to navigate to [Save], then press .

3. Use the keypad to input a name.

4. Press to enter.

5. The display shows Save Successfully.

Deleting a Call from a Call List

1. While viewing an entry from the Call Log list, press to select.

2. Press or button to navigate to [Delete], then press .

3. Press to enter.

4. The display shows Delete Successfully.

Write a new message (RDR4390™ only)

You can write a text message and send it to anyone in the contact list.

The maximum length of characters for a text message is 500.

1. Press button to access the menu, press or button to

select Messages.

2. Press or button navigate to the New Message and press

button again to write a new message.

3. Once complete the message, press to enter and press or

button to select the target radio you wish to send the

message to.

4. If the message is sent, a tone sounds and the display shows Sent.

If the message is not sent, the display shows Failed.

Quick Message (RDR4390™ only)

Quick Messages are pre-saved in the radio’s memory short text

messages that can be sent by the user through the radio Menu or an

assigned programmable Shortcut Key. You can create up to 10 quick

messages. Quick messages can have up to 34 characters.

1. Press button to access the menu.

2. Press or button navigate to the New Message.

3. Press or button to select Quick Messages, press

button to enter the Quick Message menu.

4. Press or button to select the preset quick message and

press button to enter.

5. Press or button to select the target radio you wish to

send the quick message to.

6. If the message is sent, a tone sounds and the display shows Sent.

If the message is not sent, the display shows Failed.

Status Message (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ only)

The status messages are pre-saved in the radio’s memory short text

messages that can be sent by the user through the radio Menu or an

assigned programmable Shortcut Key. A Status ID is assigned to each

text message, and the Status ID’s in all radios must match in order

for the receiving radios to identify and display the proper messages

associated with the Status ID. You can create up to 127 status

messages. Status messages can have up to 60 characters.

1. Press button to access the menu.

2. Press or button navigate to the New Message.

3. Press or button to select Status Messages, press

button to enter the Status Messages menu.

4. Press or button to select the preset Status Message and

press button to enter.

5. Press or button to select the target radio you wish to

send the Status Message to.

6. If the message is sent, the radio beeps twice and the display shows

Sent. If the message is not sent, the radio beeps once and display

shows Failed.

Managing Sent Text Message (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ only)

Once a message is sent to another radio, it is saved in Outbox. The most

recent sent text message is always added to the top of the outbox list.

The Outbox folder is capable of storing a maximum of ten (10)

sent messages. When the folder is full, the next sent text message

automatically replaces the oldest text message in the folder.

Note: Press at any time to return to the previous screen.

Viewing Sent Text Message in Outbox (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ only)

1. Press button to access the menu.

2. Press or button navigate to the Messages and press .

3. Press or button to select Outbox and press .

4. Press or button to select the preset Status Message and

press button to enter.

5. Press or button to navigate to the desired message and

press button.

You can select one of the following options while viewing a sent text

message:

• View

• Resend

• Edit

• Extract Number

• Delete

• Delete All

To perform any of the function press again while viewing the

message.

To perform any of the functions:

1. Press again while viewing the message.

2. Press or button navigate to View, Resend, Edit, Extract

Number, Delete or Delete All and press to select.

3. If you select [ Edit ], the radio will ask you to select the contact from

the recipients list.

4. If the message is sent, the radio beeps twice and the display shows

Sent. If the message is not sent, the radio beeps once and the

display shows Failed.

Deleting All Sent Text Messages from the Sent Items (RDR4360™ /

RDR4390™ only)

1. Press button to access the menu.

2. Press or button navigate to the Messages and press .

3. Press or button to select Outbox and press .

4. Press or button to ﬁnd Delete All and press button

to enter.

5. The display shows Delete All?, press to conﬁrm. The display

shows Delete Successfully.

Receiving a Text Message (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ only)

When your radio receives a message, the display shows New Message.

Managing Received Text Message (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™ only)

Use the Inbox to manage your text messages. The Inbox is capable of

storing a maximum of 10 messages. Your radio supports the following

options for text messages:

• View

• Reply

• Forward

• Delete

• Delete All

Text messages in the Inbox is sorted according to the date they were

received. The most recent message will appear on the top of the list.

Press at any time to return to the previous menu..

Viewing a Text Message from the Inbox (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™

only)

1. Press button to access the menu.

2. Press or button navigate to the Messages and press .

3. Press or button to select Inbox and press .

4. Press or button to navigate to the desired message.

5. Press to view the current message.

Replying to a Text Message from the Inbox (RDR4390™ only)

1. Press button to access the menu.

2. Press or button navigate to the Message and press to

select.

3. Press or button to navigate to Inbox and press to

select.

4. Press or button to select the message, and press

to access the sub-menu and select Reply, Forward or Delete the

message.

5. Press or button to navigate to Reply and press to

select.

6. Enter the text using your alphabetic/numeric keypad. Once done

typing, press to send the message.

7. If the message is sent, the radio beeps twice and the display shows

Sent. If the message is not sent, the radio beeps once and the

display shows Failed.

Forwarding a Text Message from the Inbox (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™

only)

1. Press button to access the menu.

2. Press or button navigate to the Message and press to

select.

3. Press or button to navigate to Inbox and press to

select.

4. Press or button to select the message, and press

to access the sub-menu and select Reply, Forward or Delete the

message.

5. Press or button to navigate to Forward and press to

select.

6. Press and select the Contacts from the recipients menu and

press to send.

7. If the message is sent, the radio beeps twice and the display shows

Sent. If the message is not sent, the radio beeps once and the

display shows Failed.

Deleting a Text Message from the Inbox (RDR4360™ / RDR4390™

only)

1. Press button to access the menu.

2. Press or button navigate to the Message and press to

select.

3. Press or button to navigate to Inbox and press to

select.

4. Press or button to select the message, and press

to access the sub-menu and select Reply, Forward or Delete the

message.

5. Press or button to navigate to Delete and press to

select.

6. The display shows “Delete ?”, press to conﬁrm. The display

shows Delete Successfully.

Note: When you select the Inbox and it contains

no text messages, the display shows Empty!

Scan

Scan lists are created and assigned to individual channels / groups.

The radio scans for activity by cycling through the channel/group

sequence speciﬁed in the scan list for the current channel / group.

Your radio can support up to 16 scan lists, with a maximum of 100

members in a list. However, it is recommended to add not more than

16 channels for optimal result. Each scan list can support a mixture

of both analog and digital entries. You can add, delete, or prioritize

channels by editing the scan lists.

Scan Instructions and Methods

When a scan is initiated, your radio cycles through the programmed

scan list for the current channel looking for voice activity. The LED

blinks red and you see the Scan icon on the display (RDR4360™ /

RDR4390™ only)

There are two ways of initiating scan:

• Manual Scan: Initiate scan manually using the programmed scan

list by your RCA Communications Systems dealer Scan ON/OFF

side button or menu function . When scan is initiated, radio will

detect all channels / groups on the programmed scan list.

• Auto Scan: Your radio automatically starts scanning when you

select a channel / group that has Auto Scan enabled.

Viewing an Entry in the Scan List

Use the Channel Selector Knob to select a channel programmed with

a scan list.

Press to access the menu, press or to navigate to Services.

Press or to navigate to Scan and press to select.

Press or to navigate to Scan List and press or to

select the appropriate list.

Press [ 1 ] to select or press [ 2 ] to view/edit.

Note: If a channel is set as priority, the Priority icon appears left of the

channel alias.

Starting and Stopping Scan

Press the programmed Scan side button to start or stop the Scan

feature or follow the procedure below:

1. Press to access the menu, press or to navigate to

Services.

2. Press or to navigate to Scan and press to select.

3. Press or to navigate to On/O.

4. Press or to select On or O and press to select.

5. The LED blinks orange and the Scan icon is displayed when scan

is enabled. THE LED turns o and the Scan icon disappears when

Scan is disabled.

Responding to a Scan

During scanning, your radio stops on any channel / group where

activity is detected. After the transmission is over the radio remains

on the active channel for a programmed time period known as “hang

time”.

1. Press the {PTT} button during hang time to respond to the call. The

LED lights up red.

2. Release the [PTT] button to listen.

Note: If you do not respond within the hang time period,

the radio continues scanning other channels / groups.

Deleting a Nuisance Channel

If a channel continually generates unwanted calls or noise (termed

a “nuisance” channel), you can temporarily remove the unwanted

channel from the scan list.

Note: This capability does not apply to the channel designated as the

Selected Channel. This feature is not accessible through the menu.

1. When your radio stops on an unwanted or nuisance channel, press

the programmed Nuisance Channel Delete button until you hear a

tone.

2. Release the Nuisance Channel Delete button. The nuisance

channel is deleted.

Restoring a Nuisance Channel To restore the deleted nuisance

channel, power the radio o and back on again or press Stop and Start

to restart a scan via the programmed Scan button.

Keypad Locked and Keypad Unlocked

You can lock your radio’s keypad to avoid an inadvertent key press.

You have two options to lock your keypad:

• Shortcut key: press the programmed keypad lock button to lock

or unlock the keypad.

• Use keypad to activate the setting:

1. Press to access the menu

2. Press or to navigate to Settings and press to select.

3. Press or to navigate to Keypad Lock and press to

select.

4. Press or to select the appropriate time frame or turn

the keypad lock o, press to conﬁrm.

Setting Alerts/Tones

The Alerts/Tones menu allows you to preset or customize radio’s

audible alerts and tones for the following actions listed below. You

can Enable or Disable each one of them individually and/or select

a Vibration option. The settings are radio-wide and aect all radio

operating modes.

Setting Date and Time

This setting allows the user to set or adjust the date and time according

to the preferred time zone.

4. Use the or button to adjust the number, use the or

button to move to the next section.

Setting Screen Saver

This setting allows the user to set a default time interval for the display

screen saver to stay ON after the last action taken by the user.

Display Settings

This setting allows you to control backlight timeout and backlight

brightness of the LCD display.

Backlight Timeout

1. Press to access the menu.

2. Press or to navigate to Settings and press to select.

3. Press or to navigate to Display Setting and press to

select.

4. Press or to navigate to Backlight Timeout and press

to select.

5. Press or to select the appropriate time frame or turn the

backlight O, press to conﬁrm.

Brightness

1. Press to access the menu.

2. Press or to navigate to Settings and press to select.

3. Press or to navigate to Display Setting and press to

select.

4. Press or to navigate to Brightness and press to

select.

5. Use the or button to adjust the brightness. 8 is the brightest

and 1 is the darkest.

Reversing the Display

This feature allows you to reverse the display if needed for certain

working condition.

1. Press to access the menu.

2. Press or to navigate to Settings and press to select.

3. Press or to navigate to Reverse and press to select.

4. Press or to turn On or O the display reverse setting.

Setting Channel Report

This feature allows you to turn the channel number voice announcement

ON or OFF.

1. Press to access the menu.

3. Press or to navigate to Channel Report and press to

select.

4. Press or to turn On or O the Channel Report setting.

Setting Channel Display

Deﬁnes if the radio displays the caller ID or the Alias during a call.

1. Press to access the menu.

3. Press or to navigate to Channel Display and press to

select.

4. Press or to select Alias or Frequency.

Setting the Power Level

Sets the radio’s transmission power level for this channel. This feature

can be toggled between the levels, using the radio menu or the

programmable shortcut keys.

3. Press or to navigate to Power Level and press to select.

4. Press or to select Low Power or High Power.

Speech Enhancement

This feature controls the your radio’s microphone gain automatically

while transmitting. It suppresses loud audio or boosts soft audio to a

preset value in order to provide a consistent level of audio.

Note: This feature is not available with Wireless Audio Accessories.

4. Press or to turn On or O the Speech Enhancement.

Speaker Auto Gain Control (SPK. AGC)

This feature automatically adjusts the radio audio volume to overcome

background noise in the current environment. This feature aects the

Receive Audio only.

Note: This feature is not available with Wireless Audio Accessories.

Wireless Program

This feature allows you to connect your radio with a PC via a wireless

USB.

Setting Emergency Service

Man Down

Man Down is an optional licensed feature. If the feature is not activated

in the radio, contact your RCA Communications Systems Dealer.

Note: Your radio must be programmed by your RCA Communications

Systems dealer according your requirements to allow you to eciently

use the Man Down feature.

This feature enables Man Down function in the radio. Man Down

initiates an emergency alarm to be sent if the radio is in a position at a

predeﬁned angle for a predeﬁned period of time and there has been

no actions taken by the user during the predeﬁned time. Man Down is

radio-wide feature.

1. Press to access the menu.

2. Press or to navigate to Settings and press to select.

3. Press or to navigate to Emergency and press to select.

4. Press or to turn On or O the Man Down.

Accessory Link

This feature allows you to connect a wireless audio accessory to your

radio.

Note: Use only RCA approved wireless audio accessories.

Lone Worker

Lone Worker is an optional licensed feature. If the feature is not activated

in the radio, contact your RCA Communications Systems Dealer.

Note: Your radio must be programmed by your RCA Communications

Systems dealer according your requirements to allow you to eciently

use the Lone Worker feature.

This feature enables Lone Worker function in the radio. Lone Worker

initiates an emergency alarm to be sent if there has been no actions

taken by the user for a predeﬁned time. Lone Worker is radio-wide

feature.

1. Press to access the menu.

2. Press or to navigate to Service and press to select.

3. Press or to navigate to Emergency and press to select.

4. Press or to turn On or O the Lone Worker.

Encryption (This feature is supported in Digital mode only)

Encryption (also known as Privacy) allows for the transmissions on

selected digital channels to be encrypted. Encryption is a software-

based solution that is meant to prevent eavesdropping. The receiving

radio(s) must have the same Encryption Key (PRODIGITM Advanced

GPS Settings (This feature is supported in Digital mode only)

GPS is a location reporting feature, which allows the radio to obtain its

current location from satellites it is connected to. The coordinates then

can be sent to a designated Dispatch console for tracking purposes.

Note: At least one RCA compatible PC dispatch console, serving as

Target Contact, is needed to decode and display properly the radio

unit location coordinates. For more information contact your RCA

Communications Systems Dealer.

Accessing General Radio Information (RDR4360 / RDR4390)

Your radio contains information on the following:

• Bandwidth

• Radio ID

• Alias

• Serial Number

• Firmware Version

• Hardware Version

To access the information on your radio, you have below two options:

1. Using the Radio Option Menu

1.1. Press key to access the Option menu

1.2. Press or to select Radio Info.

2. Using the Radio Menu

2.1. Press to access the menu.

2.2. Press or to navigate to Settings.

2.3. Press or to navigate to Radio info and press to

select.

Voice Recording

This feature allows you to record each communication with other

radios. A microSDHC card UHS Speed Class U1 is required to store the

voice recording ﬁles and is not included with the radio. If the feature is

not activated in the radio, contact your RCA Communications Systems

Dealer.

CARE AND CLEANING

• Do not directly handle the radio by its antenna or external

microphone.

• Do not place the radio in a dusty or dirty environment.

• Clean the radio with a lint-free cloth moistened with clean water

and/or a mild dishwashing liquid to remove dirt, grease and dust.

• Avoid subjecting the radio to corrosives, solvent or spirits.

Symptom Solution

Radio will not power on

a. The battery needs charging. Recharge the battery or replace it

with a fresh one.

b. The battery is not properly installed. Remove the battery and

reattach it.

The operating time is notice-

ably shorter than normal even

though the battery is properly

charged.

a. The battery has worn out; it is time to buy a new battery.

b. The battery is not fully charged. Make sure that the battery is

removed after LED indicator has turned green.

Cannot talk to or hear transmis-

sions from your group members

a. Make sure that your radio operates on the same channel and / or

has the same CTCSS/CDCSS settings as your group members.

b. Make sure you are within their communication range.

Radio is on, but you cannot hear

voice transmissions or they are

not very loud

a. Turn the volume control knob to its maximum volume.

b. Return the radio to your dealer to check for microphone damage.
