included in the packaging.
Installing the Data Gateway higher improves signal
strength and range to end devices.
Install a Data Gateway before you install the end devices
that will communicate through the Data Gateway.
2.3 SecureDataGateway
The Data Gateway easily attaches to a pivot pipe using
molded-in magnets in the base of the enclosure. To ensure
the Data Gateway stays secured to the pivot pipe, route
the included zip tie through the slots in the base of the
Data Gateway (recommended).
2.4 AttachbrackettoSolarPanel
Attach Solar Panel to mounting bracket.
2.5 SelectInstallationLocation
Install in the rst span of the pivot and NOT in direct spray
from the pivot. While the Data Gateway is sealed, direct
spray increases the risk of water damage and mineral
buildup on both the Data Gateway and the solar panel. To
prevent this issue, install sprinkler drops.
Position the Data Gateway and solar panel on the pivot
pipe within cable reach of each other. Ensure the connec-
tor on Data Gateway faces solar panel. Secure any excess
cord from the solar panel using a fastener like a zip tie or
move them further apart.
The battery is not charging on the Data Gateway.
Check:
• Is the solar panel secure and facing upwards? If not, re-
mount to ensure the solar panel is getting direct sunlight.
• Is the solar panel in the shadow tower box or any other
structures? If so, move solar panel and Data Gateway if
necessary.
• Is there mineral buildup on the solar panel? If so, wipe
off the solar panel and relocate out of direct spray from the
pivot.

6
2.6 Set Antennae Angle
You can install the Data Gateway either horizontally or
vertically on a tower.
Horizontal: the antenna should be set to a right angle with
the antenna pointing up.
Vertical: the antenna and connector end should be on
the bottom end. The antenna should be set straight and
pointing down.
2.7 Tighten Zip Ties
Use the supplied zip ties to secure the Solar Panel assem-
bly and Data Gateway to the pivot pipe.
Tighten the zip ties enough to prevent the device from
sliding sideways on the pipe.
Avoid overtightening the zip tie on the Data Gateway as
this may damage the enclosure.
Put the ratchet mechanism on the head of zip tie towards
the installer before routing it through the Data Gateway
and solar panel. This helps be able to get the zip tie tight-
ened properly.
2.8 ObserveLEDIndicators
The Data Gateway has two red-green-blue LED indicators:
one for status (in the middle of the side) and one for cellu-
lar RSSI (toward the corner on the side).
2.9 PowerDataGatewayOn
Plug the solar panel cable into the Data Gateway with the
latch chip on the top side as shown. Ensure the solar panel
plug latch is locked, as it can be hard to get plugged in
fully. This will turn the Data Gateway on. The status LED
indicator will ash multi-colored when rst turns on (see
gure in step 3.9).
The unit makes a “popping” sound and starts smok-
ing. The latch chip was not put on the top side as
shown. Un-plug the solar panel from the Data Gate-
way. Contact customer support; see step 4.
The status LED ashes multi-colored; the Data Gate-
way is working.
The status LED indicator is ashing yellow as the bat-
tery maybe low (see table in step 3.11).
Plugging the Solar Panel into the Data Gateway will
power the Data Gateway up from its internal battery
pack even if there is no sunlight to charge the battery.
The Data Gateway can run through the night and
through several heavily overcast days in a row when
fully charged. It can be fully charged in less than one
sunny day, assuming the Solar Panel is oriented for
good solar reception. However, due to battery ship-
ping regulations, the Data Gateway ships with approxi-
mately 30% battery charge. It will need at least one full
sun day for the battery level indication to sync with the
actual battery level (full charge).
3 Verication
3.1 VerifyStatusLights
The table below gives the meaning of colors and ashes
on the status LED indicator.
It will turn on its GPS receiver to acquire time and location
after you plug it into the solar panel. A short cyan blink
every two seconds indicates GPS is on.

7
The Data Gateway does not seem to be powered and/
or running.
The Data Gateway sleeps most of the time to achieve
a long battery life. It will transmit data to the cloud via
cellular connection every 15 minutes. The Data Gate-
way is designed to detect a double tap - two taps, one
immediately following the other. This will wake up the
device if it is asleep. A white ash of the status indica-
tor signals a double tap detection. If the Data Gateway
is sleeping, you can use this double tap to verify that
it’s powered and running.

3.2 VerifyCellularRSSILights
The table gives the meaning of colors and ashes on the
Cellular RSSI LED indicator.
The Data Gateway Cellular LED indicator stays red
while connecting to cellular. It should be relocated if
this indicator is red and maybe even yellow as that is a
poor signal.
The Data Gateway Cellular LED indicator is green,
cyan, or white as those are okay to excellent, respec-
tively.
3.3 VerifyCellularRSSILights(Continued)
The Data Gateway will also initiate a cellular Verify the
timestamp is showing the current connection and send a
series of packets to verify functionality. Solid green indi-
cates it is connecting to a cell tower. 50% blinking green
indicates it is communicating over cellular.
Immediately after booting, the Data Gateway will start lis-
tening for packets from end devices that are within range.
Several status LED indications can go on at the same
time.
3.4 VerifyTimestamp
It’s important to verify the Data Gateway is reporting to the
RealmFive app before leaving the eld.
Once the Data Gateway completes the cellular connection,
the Data Gateway’s app web page should show new data
from the device.
Verify the timestamp is showing the current date on battery
charge, RSSI, and transmission delay on device dashboard.
3.5 VerifySignalStrength
The signal strength number is the RSSI of the cellular
connection. If the RSSI is less than - 115, consider moving
the Data Gateway installation higher or closer to a cell
tower. On a pivot, the signal strength will vary as the pivot
rotates. Before you leave the installation site, check this to
avoid poor signal strength.
