1.1 UNPACKING THE HOIST
Thehoistwillhavebeenpackedintoacardboardboxorpalletised(seeweightdetailsinspecication)
Handlingofallmodelsofhoist&trolleywillrequireliftingequipmentandshouldn’tbemovedbyhand.
WHEN UNPACKING:
Ensurethatbothhoistandanyancillaryequipmentarerecoveredfromthepackaging.Smallordelicateitemsmayhavebeenpacked
separately.Checkthecontentsagainstthesupplier’sdeliverynoteandadvisethesupplierimmediatelyofanyshortages.
Ensurethatthehoistandancillaryequipmentareundamaged.Ifthegoodsdonotreachyouinperfectcondition,notifyyoursupplier
immediately of any damage. Do not proceed with installation if the goods are damaged.
EnsurethatacerticateofThoroughExaminationtogetherwithaUKCAoraCEDeclarationofConformityisincludedwiththegoods.Handthese
toa‘responsibleperson’forsafekeeping.Checkthattheidentifyingmark(serialnumber),theSafeWorkingLoad(RatedLoad)andthatthe
UKCA or CE marking appears on the hoist or hoist and trolley.

GETTING STARTED - OPERATION
1.2 OPERATION
Red Rooster pneumatic hoists and trolleys are designed for the lifting and lowering of loads within the capacity of the model selected. The range
ofhoistsandtrolleyscanbeUKCA,orCEmarkedandconformwith‘SupplyofMachinery(Safety)Regulations2008(Astheyapplytomachinery
beingsuppliedinorintoGreatBritainfrom1stJanuary2021)forUKCAmarkingandalsotheMachineryDirective2006/42/ECforCEmarking.At
presentboththeUKandEUusethesamestandardswithBSEN14492-2beingthemainstandardforpoweredhoistingequipment.
Ourrangeofhoistsandtrolleysareavailableashooksuspensionunits,trolleymounted,builtintolowheadroomunitsandcranes.Nearlyall
hoistmodelsarealsoavailableasExZONE1or2hoistsforuseinhazardousareas,withcorrosionprotection,andcanworkintemperatures
of -20°C to +60°C.Whenusedoutdoororoshorehoistsshouldbeprotectedagainsttheweatherandexaminationandmaintenanceinterval
shouldbereduced.
Ourhoistsareextremelyrobustbeingdevelopedovermanyyearsintheharshestofenvironmentsandwillrequirelittlemaintenanceifkept
lubricatedonaregularbasis.Noiselevelscanbefoundinthetechnicalspecicationandasmotorlubricatingoilissuppliedthroughthe
lterlubricatorttedtothehoisttherewillbeasmallamountofoilescapingintotheatmospherethroughtheexhaustair:thiscanbepipedaway
orcollectedusinganexhaustcleaner.Incertaincircumstancesandtemperaturesthereisadangeroficingofthemotorandexhaustsilencer.
Thiscanbepreventedbyusingananti-icinglubricantsuchasSilkairorbyttingadryertotheairsupplytoremovemoisturefromtheair
supply. Some anti-icing oil may damage air hoses and the o-ring in the hoist valve.

1.3 CHECKS BEFORE USE
Thesechecksshouldbecarriedoutduringinstallationandonafrequentandregularbasisthereafter.Ifthehoistisuseddailythenitis
recommendedthattheyarecarriedoutdailyasthecheckstakeonlyminutestocompleteandnotonlyhelpavoidrepairbillsbutsignicantly
reducethepossibilityofanaccidentordangerousoccurrence.Thoroughlyexaminetheequipmentpriortoinstallationtoensurethatno
damagehasoccurredduringtransit.HoistsandtrolleysshouldnotbealteredinanywaywithoutcontactingRedRoosterforclearance,asthis
mayaectthecerticationoftheunit.
AIR SUPPLY CHECKS:
▪ Inletpressure:4to6bar(therewillbepressurelossesacrosstheairsetandonlonghoses)Thesupplypressureshouldnot
exceed7barasthismayaecttheloadlimiter.
▪ Airow:Checkairowrequirementandminimumhosediameteralsocheckthatsmallborettingsarenotstranglingtheairow.
▪ Keepthelubricatortoppedupwithalightturbineoil(ISOVG3256).
▪ Theltershouldbecheckedregularlyandmanualunitsdrainedofwaterasrequired.
▪ THE AIR HOSE SHOULD BE SUPPORTED SO THAT THE WEIGHT OF HOSE IS NOT HANGING FROM THE AIR SET AND
FITTINGS. THE AIR SET IS NOT DESIGNED TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF THE HOSE. SEE PAGES 7 AND 12 IF A HOSE
SUPPORT BRACKET AND MANIFOLD IS FITTED TO THE HOIST.
▪ Theairsupplyshouldbecleanandrelativelydry.Wherethecompressorproducesalotofwateractionshouldbetakentoremove
theexcesswater.
▪ Checkairconnectionsizeandtypearecompatible.
▪ Checksecurityofairhoseconnection.
AIR SUPPLY CONNECTION:
Everyinstallationisdierent,sothecorrectmethodofsupportingtheairhoseshouldbereviewedwhileinstallingthehoist.Thisneedsto
takeintoaccounttheweightandsizeofthehose,obstructionsbothatdeckandhoistlevel,connections,operatingconditionsandanylikely
movement of the hoist and air hose.
Thettingsandlterlubricatorarenotdesignedtotaketheweightofthehose.
Iftheairsupplyhoselengthisover10metresthehoseIDshouldbeincreasedtothenextsize.
AIR SUPPLY:
Vanetypeairmotorsaredesignedtofunctionusingclean,dry,lubricatedair.Theinstallationofan‘inline’airserviceunitalthoughessential
cannot in itself compensate for serious contamination in the air supply. When operating the compressor in moist (humid) or dusty atmospheres
seektheadviceofyourcompressorsupplierwithregardtothettingofadryerandlter.
AIR PRESSURE:
Thehoistisdesignedtooperatebestinthepressurerangeof4to6bar(72to90p.s.i).Thespeedsquotedonthemanufacturer’sliterature
areobtainableonlyat6bar(90p.s.i)inletpressure.Thehoistwilloperateatmuchreducedspeedatpressuresbelowthisgure.
AIR FLOW:
Refertothehoistdatasheet,toselectthehosediameterwhichensuresadequateairow.Failuretoprovideadequateairowwillresultina
pressuredropinthesupplylineandcausethehoisttostallandthebraketoapplyuntilthepressureincreases.Inaddition,thebrakewillnot
releasecleanlyandwilloverheat.(Althoughnotinitselfahazard[thebrakewillfailsafe]itmayprovefrustratingtotheoperatorandahazard
mayariseasaconsequence.)
HOSE SUPPORT BRACKET:
Whereahosesupportbracketandmanifoldhavebeenttedtothehoisttotaketheweightofanairsupplyhose,severalchecksmustbedone.
▪ Checkthehosehangsfreelyanddoesnotinterferewiththehoistchain.
▪ Checkthehoseisclearoftheloadtobelifted.
▪ Checkthependanthoseisnotobstructedbytheairsupplyhose.
▪ Checktheairhoseissupportedbythehoseclamp/former/festoonsystem.
▪ DOuseexclusivelycorrectlyratedandcertiedpneumatichosesandttingsintheairsupplyline.
▪ DOsupporttheairlineuptothehoist,asthettingandlter/lubricatorarenotdesignedtotakealoadandmaynotsupportthe
weight of the hose.
▪ DOmaintaintheinternaldiameter(asperthetablethroughoutthesupplylength)orreducefromthelargerdiametertothe
smaller diameter in the direction of the hoist.
▪ DON’Tusehydraulicttings.Theseoftenhaveareducedoricesizeresultinginadownlinedropinairpressure.
▪ DON’Tincreasefromsmallertolargerdiameterorinsertalengthofsmallerdiameterhoseinthesupplylineasthiswillresultin
reducedowandpressure.
▪ DON’Tcreatelowpointsintheairsupplylinewherewatermaybetrapped(orifunavoidableinstalladraintap).
▪ DON’Trelyonpneumaticttingstosupportairlines;theyarenotdesignedforthispurpose.
▪ DON’Tshortenthependantbyformingalooporacoil.Thiswillpreventthestrainerwirefromsupportingthependantandwill
causethehosestobecomedetachedorkinked.

1.4 HOIST ASSEMBLY
Normallyourhoistorhoistandtrolleyswillarrivecompletereadytobettedintoposition,butsometimesfortransportationitmaybe
necessary to disconnect the chain collector, trolley or the pendant control system.
▪ Chaincollectorswillbesuppliedwiththenecessaryboltsandttingstoassembleonsitealongwithanysafetyslingsasshownin
section 1.8 and chain collectors in section 7.4.
▪ Duetothesizeofsometrolleysitiseasiertoshipsplitfromthehoist,thetrolleyGAdrawingsshowtheloadbarandtopeyedetails
forrettingandthecontrolandsupplyairlinesarenumberedorcolourcodedforre-connection.
▪ Wherelongcontrolsarefittedtoahoisttheyarecolourcodedforre-connectiononsite.
▪ Whenliftingintopositioneitherusetheliftingpointsonthehoistorhoistandtrolley,ifthehoistdoesnothaveliftingpointsfitted
securelyfitslingstothebodyofthehoistorusethetophookifpossible.Donotliftbythecontrols,valves,ortheairset.
MOUNTING THE HOIST
TheairhoistisdesignedasaLIFTINGMACHINEandassuchisdesignedexclusivelyfortheliftingloadsvertically.Nonverticalliftingwill
result in premature wear of the chain and chain guide and may result in damage to the limit arms or a failure of the limit arms to operate.
▪ Sitethehoistimmediatelyabovetheloadwhichistobelifted.
▪ Ensurethatthepointfromwhichthehoistissuspendedhasbeendesignedandtestedtoatleastthesamesafeworkingloadas
the hoist itself.
▪ Ensurethatthesuspensionpointorshackletssnuglyintothebowlofthehoisttophookandthatthesafetycatchclosesto
prevent escape.
▪ UseonlycertiedliftinggearwithaSWLinexcessoftheloadtobeliftedtoconnecttotheloaditself.
▪ Ensurethattheliftinggeartssnuglyintothebowlofthehoistbottomhookandthatthesafetycatchclosestopreventescape.
▪ Ensurethatthecontrollength(pendantorcords)isadequatetoallowtheoperatortostandawayfromtheload,inasafeand
secure position with the cords or pendant at waist height.
▪ ThehoistisalsottedwithaseparatesuspensionpointforinstallationorasasecondarysafetypointwhichcansupportthefullSWL
of the hoist.
CLOSE HEADROOM WORKING
The lower hook of the TMH hoist includes a swivel arrangement. This allows the load to turn without twisting the chain. However, when
repeatedlyhandlingloadswiththebottomhookclosetothehoist,especiallywhenrotationoftheloadisprevented,thereistendencyforthe
chaintoattempttoentertheguideatanangle.Thisisparticularlypronouncedontwofallunits.Ifthisproblemisnoticedwhendoingatriallift,
ahighqualityballbearingswivelshouldbemountedbelowthebottomhookofthehoist.
CHAIN COLLECTORS
Ifthehoisthasbeensuppliedwithachaincollectorbagorbucket,andthechainhasbeenstoredwithinitduringshipment,removeallthe
chainfromthecollectorbyhand,andremoveanyknotsortwists.
Inallcasescarefullyfeedthechainovertheloadwheelallowingittollthecollectorwithoutanyinterferenceasitemergesfromthewheel.
Thiswaythecollectorwillllnormally.Ifthechainwithinthecollectorisdisturbedgreatcaremustbetakenthenexttimethatthechainisfed
outofthecollectortoensurethatitisnottwistedorknotted.Chainbagsandbucketsarettedwithoneortwobracketsdependingonthe
model and HOL of the hoist. See additional instructions (Section 6) for large collectors.
1.5 TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
TheWLLofthehoistwillbemarkedonthehoistnameplateandalsointhehoistspecicationsupplied.
Thereactionsonthepoweredhoistonthesupport,runwaybeamorcraneshouldhavebeentakenintoaccountinthedesignofthestructure.
Thestructureshouldbeatleast25%strongerthanwhenusingmanualequipmentduetotheshockloadingappliedbytheoperationalspeeds
and the starting and stopping of the hoist.
AllRedRoosterhoistsarettedwiththefollowingsafetyfeatures
▪ Upperandlowermechanicallyoperatedtravellimits.Theseareultimatestopsandshouldnotbeusedtostopthehoistonaregular
basis.
▪ Loadlimitingvalve.Afterassemblyandprooftesttheloadlimitingvalvesetissettostoptheoperationofthehoistifanoverloadis
detected.Thehoistwillstopliftingbutwillstilllowertheload.
▪ Thediscbrakeisspringappliedsowhenthecontrolsarenotoperatedorintheeventoflossofairsupplythebrakeisapplied
holding the load in position.
▪ Onpendantcontrolledhoistsanemergencystopbuttonisfittedwhichconnectstoanormallyopenvalveeitherlocatedinthehoist
valvechamberorconnectedtothehoist.Whentheemergencystopbuttonispushedoriftheairsupplytothehoistiscutoffthen
the valve will close stopping the hoist.

HOIST CHECKS (AIR SUPPLY OFF)
▪ Hookswivelssatisfactorilyandthesafetycatchesworkcorrectly.
▪ Loadchainisundamagedandlubricated(lightmineraloil).
▪ Theloadchainisnottwistedthrough(twofallormoremodels)andthattheloadchainpassedthroughthelimitlever(Allmodels).
▪ Theloadchainanchorissound(bothliveandslackend).
▪ Checkfordamagetothehoist,pendantandcontrollines.
▪ Donotoperatedbelow-20°Corabove60°C without contacting Red Rooster.
HOIST CHECKS (AIR SUPPLY ON)
▪ Thependantbuttons,leversorcordsshouldbesmoothtooperateandreturntoneutralwhenreleased(hoiststopsanddoesnot
run on).
▪ Thehoistisrunupanddownonaregularbasis.Wherehoistsarehanginginadryandprotectedareatheyshouldberunweekly,
wherethehoistisoutsideandnotprotecteditshouldbechecked,lubricatedandrundaily.
▪ Theemergencystopbutton/valveoperatesimmediately.
▪ Upperandlowerlimitswitches/leversworksatisfactorily.
▪ Loadchainsrunsmoothlyoverthepocketwheel.
▪ Theloadchainshouldbeexaminedperiodicallyforcracks,gougesandwear.
▪ Chaincollectorsshouldbecheckedforsecurityandchaincapacity.
▪ Checkchainrunsinandoutofthechaincollectorsmoothly.
▪ Forhoistswithalongdropofchainoralargechaincollectoraseparatesuspensionpointmayberequired(seesection1.8).
▪ Cordcontrolhoistsshouldhavethetogglesmarkedforraiseandlower.
▪ Oncordcontrolscheckthespoolvalvereturnstoneutralandthehoiststopswhenthecordisreleased.(hoiststopsanddoesnotrun
on).
▪ Checkthesilencerisnotpartiallyblockedbycomparingtherunningspeedwithoutloadagainstthespeedinthemanual.

Airhoistscanbecontrolledbyeitherapullcordorapendantcontroloperatingthespoolvalveofthehoistoperatingraiseandlower.The
diagraminsection1.8showsthesetupforbothtypesofcontrolandthelocationonthehoistbody.
Cordorpendanthoselengthsshouldbelongenoughfortheoperatortostandawayfromundertheloadbutstillwiththecordtogglesorthe
pendantsuspendedataheightofaround1metrefromtheoperatinglevel.Wherethecontrolshavetobetothesideofthehoistor
wheretheoperatorcannotseetheloadtravellingthefullrangeoftheliftabanksmanshouldbeappointedtoassisttheoperatorusinga
reliablemeansofcommunication.
Bothtogglesonthecordcontrolsshouldbemarkedforcorrectoperationofthehoist.Theemergencystopbuttononthependantcontrol
shouldalsobemarked.
1.8 ADDITIONAL INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Hook suspension with long chain drops.
Problem:
Whenalongheavychainistted,andthe‘raise’ispressedwiththehoistinanunloadedcondition,duetothecentrelineofthehoisthaving
beenaectedbytheweightofchain,theupperlimitswitch,mayfailtooperate.Inaddition,theslackloadchainmayonsomemodulesfoul
the limit lever arms, thus preventing it from returning to the centre (neutral position).
Resolution:
Ashortlengthofwirerope,6mmdiameter,isttedtothehoistsandbulldoggripshavebeensupplied.
Suspendthehoistinitsnallocationandwithasmuchchainaspossibleinuse.Applyasmallloadtothehoistandliftitclearoftheground.
Connectthewireropeslingtothesupportsteelalongsidethetophookusingbulldoggrips.
Thetensioninthisslingshouldbeenoughtocounteractmostoftheweightoftheslackchainproducedinthefullyraisedposition,butitmust
notbetensionedsuchthatitiscarryinganyoftheloadsupportedbythehoist.i.e.ifttedcorrectly,inanunloadedcondition,theslingwillbe
tensionedwiththehoistALMOSTintheverticalposition.Whentheloadisapplied,thetensionintheslingwillbeslack.

Inareasofhighcorrosion,platedchaincanbeusedalongwithspeciallubricantstopreventcorrosionfromseawaterandspray.Chainsused
intheseareasshouldbere-lubricatedonaregularbasis.
NEVERuseheavygreaseorbitumenbasedproductstolubricatethechainasthesewillfoulthechainguide,idlerandloadwheelsand
bearings.
RemovedustandwaterdropsontheLoadChainandthenapplylubricant.ApplicationoflubricationinuencesonthelifeoftheLoad
Chainconsiderably.Applythelubricantsuciently.

SAFE OPERATION
3.1 Thecontentsofthissectionaredesignedfortheguidanceofpersonnelusingthehoist.Forthemostpart,theyare‘commonsense’
procedures.Mostdangerousoccurrencesinvolvingliftingmachinesarenotasaresultofdefectdevelopinginthemachineitselfbutareasa
resultofanerrororactofcarelessnessbytheoperator.Assuch,thevastmajorityofaccidentsordangerousoccurrencesareavoidable.The
operatorisresponsibleforhissafetyandthesafetyofothersintheareaofthehoist.
Itisfurtherrecommendedthatonlyauthorisedpersonnelshouldbepermittedtousethehoistandthatallstashouldbeproperlytrainedand
haveadequateknowledgeinbothsafeuseandvisualexamination.
ALWAYS - follow company procedures, work safely, report faults and comply with regulations.
GUIDELINES FOR PERSONNEL USING AIR HOIST
▪ Readtheinstructionmanualbeforeuse.
▪ Testruntheequipmentpriortoapplicationofaloadandensurethattheequipment,includingitscontrolandsafetydevicesare
functioning correctly.
▪ Donottouchthehoistbodyimmediatelyafterextensiveuse,asitmaybehotorverycold.
▪ Donotwearlooseclothing(ties,scarvesetc.)whichmaygetdraggedintothehoistorbottomblock.
▪ Wearsafetybootsorshoes(togetherwithasafetyhelmetifliftingoverhead).
▪ Ensurethatapositivelyengagedisolatorrequiringanappropriateoperationtore-engage,isttedbetweentheairsupplyand
themachine(lever,buttonorquarterturnvalve).Theisolatorshouldisolateonlythemachineitselforwherethesafetyofother
machinesmaybeaectedbyisolationofthemachine,allmachinesaectedmustbeisolatedatthesametime.
▪ Largehoistsandtrolleyshaveliftingeyesthatcanbeusedforhandlingandinstallation.Wherenoliftingeyesaretted,asling
maybettedroundthehoistbodyusingachokerhitch.
▪ Ensurethattheloadissecurelysupportedbycertiedliftinggear(slingsandshackles)withahighersafeworkingloadinthe
congurationused,thantheloadtobeliftedandthatitcannot‘escape’whilstbeinglifted.
▪ Standclearoftheloadwhenliftingorloweringandensurethatthepointatwhichyouarestandingissecure.Donottouch
moving chain.
▪ Whenthereisabriefpauseintheliftingoperationwheretheoperatorletsgoofthependantcontrol,hemuststayintheareaand
makesurethependanthangsverticallyandcannotswingorgetblownagainstanything.
▪ Whenthereisalongerbreakintheliftingoperationandtheloadhasbeenlanded,thentheemergencystopbuttonshouldbe
actuatedsothatapositiveactionisrequiredbeforethehoistorhoistandtrolleycanbeoperated.
▪ Ifthehookisstillattachedtoanitemthenasignshouldbeattachedtothependantanddependingonthecircumstancesthe
powersupplylockedo.
▪ Ensurethatotherpersonnelcannotentertheimmediateareawheretheliftistakingplace.
▪ Neverlifttheloadhigherthannecessary.
▪ Ensurethatthecontrollength(cordorpendant)isadequatetoallowtheoperatortostandawayfromtheloadinapositiontosee
the load at all stages of lift.
▪ Thependantshouldhangfromthehoistandnotbeplacedontoobjectswherethecontrolscouldbeactivated.
▪ Ifitisnotpossibletositeyourselfinapositionwhereyoucanseetheloadatallstages,appointa‘banksman’tocoverthearea
whichyoucannotseeandestablishareliablemethodofcommunication(verbalorhandsignals)beforestartingthelift.
▪ Ifyoususpectthattheequipmentisdefectiveorisdevelopingafault,stoptheliftingoperationimmediately.
▪ Intheeventofanemergencymaketheareasafebyreturningtheloadtoarestposition,butifthisisnotpossibletheareashould
becordonedoandtheadviceofyoursuperiororsafetyocersought.Neverrepairahoistwiththeloadsuspended.
▪ Ifitisnotpossibletoloweraloadtothegroundtomakeitsafe,thenaliftingplanmustbeinplacetorecovertheloadormakeit
safe in case of hoist failure.
▪ Inthecaseofcomplexliftingoperationsaliftingplanmustbeinplacetocontroltheliftstipulatingthehoiststobeused,
operatingconditions,operatorinstructionsandthedierentpartsofthelifttakingpartintheagreedsequence.Carryouta
practiceliftwithasmallloadifnecessarytoconrmtheliftingoperation.
▪ Thestartingandstoppingofthehoistandtakingupofslackchainathighspeedcanapplyhighforceswhichcouldbehigher
thantheloadbeinglifted.Alwaysoperatehoistssmoothlyandinacontrolledmanner.
▪ Theattachmentpointsmustbecapableofwithstandingtheexpectedforces.
▪ Externalvibrationcanaectthehoistandcancausedamageandwear.
▪ Donotusethehoistoutsideinhighwinds,badweatherconditions,orwhentemperaturesarelikelytobeoutsidetheoperating
temperature of the hoist.
▪ Onlyusethehoisttomakealiftsafewhenawarningalarmhasbeenactivatedintheareaandthenisolatethehoist.

SAFE OPERATION - HOIST OPERATORS
3.1 ▪ Hoistoperatorsmustbehealthyandnotundertheinuenceofalcohol,drugsormedicationwhenoperatingthehoist.
▪ Hoistoperatorsshouldbetrainedintheoperationofhoistsproperriggingproceduresfortheattachmentofloadstothehoist.
▪ Theoperatorisalwaysresponsibleforhisownsafetyandanybodyelseintheoperatingarea.
▪ Alwaysstarttheloweringorliftingmovementslowlyandsmoothly.
▪ Whenusingthehoistjointlywithanotherperson,usesignalsagreeduponatthejobsite(standardizedsignals).
▪ Whenusingthehoistwithoutchaincollector,avoidtheslackchaintofall,catchorimpactasthiscancausehazards.
▪ Incaseofairpressureloss,securetheloadandarea.Ensurethatturningtheairsupplybackoncannotresultinadangerous
occurrence.
▪ Stopusingthehoistincaseofabnormalsounds.
SAFE OPERATION - FORESEEABLE INCORRECT USE
3.1▪ Wherethesupportingsteelworktransfersavibrationoroscillationthroughthehoistthiscancauseincreasedwearbetweenthe
links of the load chain.
▪ Wherethehoistorhoistandtrolleysarettedwithliftingpointstheyshouldonlybeusedforliftingthehoistandtrolley,theyare
not designed to take the full WLL of the hoist.
▪ Beforecarryingoutanyworkonthehoistthemainairshouldbeturnedoandtheresidualareventedorthehoistrunto
dissipate the air pressure.
▪ DonotexceedthestatedSWLordutyrating.(Fig.A)
▪ Operatethehoistsmoothly.Donotsuddenlychangedirectionasthismayexertbothshockloadsaccelerationforcesmaywellin
excessoftheweightoftheloadbeinglifted.
▪ Donotusethehoisttolift/lowerpersonnel.(Fig.B)
▪ Onlyusethehoisttoliftaloadvertically.Itisnotdesignedtopullordragloadswithoutmodicationandoraliftplanbeingused
for special lifting operations, such as cross hauling. (Fig. C)

▪ Ensurethattheloadisstableandinbalanceatstartingliftingorsettingdownastiltingorfallingloadscancauseaccidents.

3.2 SAFETY EQUIPMENT - PPE
Safesystemsofworkshouldbeappropriatefortheworkingconditionsthatthehoistisbeingusedinwithmethodstatementsstatingwhat
thehoistisbeingusedfor,theauthorisationofstatooperatehoistsandthePPErequirementsinplace.Ingeneraloveralls,safetyshoes,
hearingprotectionandglovesarenormalbutothersiteswillrequiresafetyglassesandhardhats.
3.3 LIFTING GEAR BELOW THE HOIST
Whereliftinggearisconnectedintothebottomhookofthehoistitshouldbesizedforatleastthecapacityofthehoistandphysicallytwell
intothebodyofthehookallowingthesafetycatchtoclose.
Wherealargeritemsuchasaspreaderbeamisusedthismayhaveaneectontheliftingcapacityofthehoist,sotheSWLshouldbe
reducedtoreectthis.
3.4 MOUNTING ON TROLLEYS
▪ Ensurethatthetrolleyisproperlymountedonthebeamandsetcorrectlyforthebeamwithadequatewheelclearance.
▪ Ensurethatthestopsforthetrolleymountedontherunwaybeamarecorrectlypositionedandsecurelyinstalled.
▪ Ensurethatthetophookorlinkplateofthehoisttsproperlyonthesuspensionpointofthetrolleyandisassembledproperly
withthehoistatthecentreoftheloadbar.
▪ Ensurethattheloadbarandtiebarnuthavebeensecuredandthetrolleysideplatesaresetparalleltothebeamweb.
▪ Ensurethatthetiebarsarecorrectlyadjustedintheslotswiththeanti-tiltrollercloseunderthebeamwithenoughclearanceto
allowthetrolleytorunalongthebeam.
3.5 OPERATIONAL BREAKDOWN OR ACCIDENT
Ifanunloadedhoiststopsworkingthenitshouldberemovedfromlocationandsentforrepairifnoneoftheremediesinthetrouble
shootingguidehaveaneect.
Whenthehoistisstillholdingaloadthenanadditionalhoistshouldbeusedtotaketheweightoftheloadsoitcanbesafelyloweredand
thefaultyhoistremovedforrepair.Ifanotherhoistcannotbeusedtolowertheloaditispossibletoreleasethebrakebyslackeningthe
brakecoverscrewsbutthisshouldonlybedonebyaRRLengineerorafterdiscussionswithRedRoosterasitisnotalwayspossibleor
safe to do so.
Themainairsupplylinetothehoistshouldbettedwithaneasilyaccessiblevalvetocutotheairsupplytothehoistincaseof
emergencyorformaintenance.Pendantcontrolhoistsalsohaveamainairshutovalve.
Thereshouldbeasafeaccesstothehoisttocarryoutmaintenance,inspectionandlubrication.

3.6 NON-VERTICAL LIFTING
Non-verticalliftingcancoverarangeofactivitiessuchashorizontalpulling,cross-hauling,orobliquepulling.NormallyRedRoosterpneumatic
hoistsshouldonlybeusedfortheliftingandloweringofloadsvertically,sousingstandardRedRoosterhoistsforliftingatananglemaycause
damagetothehoist,thesupportingstructureortrolleyiftheequipmentandstructurehavenotbeenconrmedassuitable.
RedRoosterhasdevelopedarangeofhoistssuitablefortransferringloadsbetweenhoistsworkinguptoanangleof45˚anglefromthe
vertical. Therangeofhoistscoveredwillhave‘CH’attheendofthemodelnumberconrmingthehoisthasbeenmodiedandissuitablefor
cross-haulingofloads.UsingairhoistswithaWLL20%overthemaximumweightoftheloadbeingtransferredmeansthatneitherhoistcanbe
overloaded.FortheeectonhoistloadingsatdierentanglesseeDiagram2.
Thersthoistshouldbeloweringdownwhilethesecondhoistliftstheloaduntilthesecondhoisthasthefullloadattherequiredposition,then
thehookofthersthoistcanbedisconnectedandthenthebottomhookofthethirdhoistisconnectedtotheloadandthesequenceoflowering
andliftingcancarryonuntiltheendofthelift.Themodiedhoistcanonlybeusedwhenthebottomhookandtheloadchainsareinlineandwith
the live chain pointing towards the load. See Diagram 1.

▪ Liftinggearmustbesuitablefortheloadsappliedbythehoist.
▪ Thehoistmustbeabletoswivelinthedirectiontheloadneedstotravel,takingintoaccountthehoistlocationsandtheroutethe
load will take. See Diagram 3.
▪ Chaincollectorsmustonlybeusedwhenithasbeencheckedthatchainwillrunintothechaincollectorfromverticaltothe
maximumoperatingangle.Thecollectorshouldberemovedifthereisanychanceofthechainfallingoutofthecollector.
▪ WhereseveralhoistsarebeingusedtotransferaloadeachhoistshouldhaveaWLLatleast20%overtheweightoftheload
beinglifted.
▪ Apre-useinspectiononeachhoistmustbecarriedoutbyacompetentpersonbeforestartingacomplexliftandfunctiontests
conrmingcorrectoperationofthehoist.Thisshouldincludetheautomaticbrakeandthehoistlimits.
▪ Wherehoistsarenottobeusedforalongperiodtheyshouldbewelllubricatedafteruseandagainbeforecontinuingwiththework
(see lay-up instructions).
▪ HoistsandliftinggearshouldhavecurrentCerticatesofThoroughExamination.
▪ Theweight,integrityandstabilityoftheloadsshouldbeveriedbeforealift.
▪ RedRoosterrecommendstaglinesareattachedtotheloadwhereverpossibletopreventtheloadswingingandhelpingtodirect
the load.
▪ Undernocircumstancesshouldthehoistbeusedforcrosshaulingatanglesexceeding60Degreesfromthevertical.
▪ Siteconditionsshallbetakenintoaccountandanysignsofchangingconditions,suchaswindspeed,temperature,seastate,
rain,snowandicebuild-up.
▪ Avoidoverloadingthehoistbyworkingatexcessiveangles,snagging,oruncontrolledmovement.
▪ Stoptheoperationandcheck,ifanythingunusualisnoticedduringtheliftingoperation.
PleasecontactRedRoostertoconfirmthesuitabilityofourhoistsfortheapplicationandifyouhaveanyquestions.
ThefollowingairhoistmodelscanbemodifiedforCrossHauling-TCR-1000,TMH-3000,TMH-6000/2,TMH-10T,TMH-25T&TMH-30T.

ForspecialapplicationsRedRoostercandesignandmanufacturetrolleyswheretheloadisat90degreestotherunwaybeam.

▪ Therunwaybeamstructuremustbesuitablefortheloadingappliedbyangularlifting.
