Installation and use of the Copy utility
For the Roku HD1000

Introduction
This document covers the installation and use of the Copy utility for the Roku HD1000.
The Copy utility allows you to copy files or folders from one Media Source to another Media
Source, provided that the destination Media Source allows writing. In version 1.5 of the Roku
HD1000 software, memory cards inserted into the HD1000’s front-panel slots are not writable,
in order to protect the data on the cards. However, you can use the Copy utility to install files
into the HD1000’s internal memory, or to copy files to a shared network folder. (For example,
you can copy the contents of a card from your camera onto your computer over the network
with the Copy utility.)
The Copy utility can be placed on a flash memory card or a shared network folder, or may be
installed directly into the HD1000’s internal memory.
Installing the Copy utility on a flash card or network share
Installing the Copy utility on a flash card or network share is as simple as copying a file with
your computer. In the same downloadable package as this document, you should see a file
called “copy.roku”, and a file called “copy.roku.png”. Just copy the files onto a flash card or
into a shared folder that you have made available to the HD1000.
When the flash card is inserted or the shared folder is mounted and the corresponding Media
Source icon is highlighted in the Main Menu, you will see the Copy utility appear in the “Roku
Applications” section of the Main Menu:

Installing the Copy utility in the HD1000’s internal memory
To install the Copy utility in the HD1000’s internal memory, you will actually use the utility to
copy itself!
Follow the steps outlined in the section above to place the Copy utility onto a flash card or a
network share. Insert the card or make the network share available*.
1. Move the highlight onto the Copy utility and press the Select key on the remote. You
should see the following screen:
2. Click the “Set Source…” button. You will see the following dialog:
*If the share was already connected to your HD1000, you may need to re-scan it for the Copy utility to show up.
Just highlight the corresponding icon on the left of the Main Menu, and then press the Select button on the
remote.

3. Move the highlight onto the small arrow next to the name of the card or network
share that contains the Copy utility.
4. Press the Select key on the remote to see the contents of that card or share.
5. Move the highlight onto the small arrow next to “copy.roku”.
6. Press the Select key on the remote.
7. The text at the top of the dialog should update to show the name of the selected file,
and the highlight should move automatically to the Choose button.
8. Press the Select key again. You will return to the main Copy screen. Note that the text
next to the “Set Source…” button now shows the path to the Copy utility.
9. Move the highlight to the “Set Destination…” button, and press the Select key on the
remote.
10. You will see the same type of dialog that you saw in step 2.
11. Move the highlight onto the small arrow next to “Built-in”, and click Select on the
remote. “Built-in” should appear in white text at the top of the dialog.
12. Move the highlight left onto the Choose button, and click Select.
13. You will return to the main Copy screen. Move the highlight onto the Copy button,
and press the Select key on the remote. You will see a small dialog that shows the
progress of the copy operation.
14. When the copy operation has completed, you will see the text in the dialog reflect the
fact that the copy was a success, and the button in the dialog change to say “OK”.
15. Press the Select key on the remote to dismiss the dialog.
16. Either highlight the Exit button and press Select, or press the Exit or Menu key on the
remote to exit the Copy utility and return to the Main Menu.

17. If you move the highlight onto the Built-in icon, you should now see the Copy utility
displayed:
18. From now on, you can simply navigate to the Built-in Media Source to run the Copy
utility.
19. [Note: It’s not necessary to copy the “copy.roku.png” file to the Built-in storage, since
that file was pre-installed.]
Using the Copy utility to copy a folder
The section above describes using the copy utility to copy a single file. You can also use the
Copy utility to copy an entire folder and its contents to another location. You can follow all
the same steps, with one exception.
In place of Steps 5-8, do the following:
1. Move the highlight onto the arrow next to the folder that you want to copy.
2. Press the Select key on the remote. The list will show the contents of the folder, and
the path at the top of the dialog will show the folder’s name. The following screen
shot was taken with a CompactFlash card that contained a Music folder, with two
songs in it:

3. Move the highlight left onto the Choose button, and click the Select key on the
remote.
Continue on with the remaining steps in the instructions. Now, when you start the copy,
you’ll see the name of each file as it is copied.
At any time during the copy operation, you may click the Select key on the remote to cancel
the copy operation. The file being copied at the time that you cancel will be removed, but
any files that have been completely copied will remain in the destination.
