Kiwi-SJX Features
•512 Patches can be store an e ite . Unlike the JX-10/MKS-70 the patches store the tones as part of the patch.
The tones store within a Patch can be e ite an save as new Patches or as in ivi ual Tones.
•512 Library Tones can be store an e ite . These can be copie to an from any Upper or Lower Tones in a Patch
•Patches an Library Tones are store in Flash memory so no battery is require .
•Mi iCC & Sysex support for all parameters an Mi i Sysex support for Patch, Tone & Sequence Dump & Loa
•The Kiwi Patch E itor v8.1 or higher supports the Kiwi-SJX

Patch an Tone Notes
Rolan use a system in their tone storage that only references a tone an oes not actually store the tone with the Patch.
This has some isa vantages in that many of the Rolan tones are ROM base an cannot be e ite an for the ones that
can if an e it is ma e this will effect every Patch that references the Tone that is e ite .
With the Kiwi-SJX upgra es the Tones are store as part of the Patch. There is a separate area in memory that can store 512
Library Tones. These can be e ite an copie to or from any of the 512 Patches in either the Upper or Lower locations.
Tones can be extracte from a Patch by entering Tone E it Mo e where a Tone can be loa e into or save from a Patch.
This is one in the JX-10 by hol ing own the TONE EDIT button for 2 secon s (a long press). In the MKS-70 the TONE
button is use . To exit this mo e press the TONE EDIT button or press the CANCEL button. The Cancel button in the MKS-
70 is the Cancel/Master Tune button.
When Tone E it Mo e is entere the currently selecte upper or lower tone is copie to the Library Tone e it buffer. From
here is can be e ite or save to the Library memory or copie back to the tone in either the upper or lower memory. To
copy a library tone into the currently loa e Patch while in Tone E it Mo e a long press on the Upper or Lower buttons will
copy the library tone into the Patch.
The Tone E it Buffer can be overwritten by loa ing in a new tone from the library using the G(1-8),B(1-8) an T(1-8) buttons.
The 0&9 Tone buttons are not use .
When in Library Tone E it Mo e only the tone selecte will soun at the output of both voice boar s.
The Kiwi-SJX Tones are a Library of Tones in a separate memory area that can be selecte to be part of a Patch an are not
use in normal play.
Patch & Tone Import Sysex Support
The KiwiSJX upgra e supports loa ing Rolan format sysex umps. To fully loa in a Rolan MKS-70/JX-10 Patch & Tone
ump this must be sent to the KiwiSJX twice. The reason for this is the Rolan format has the Patch ata before the Tone
ata. This works for the Rolan JX-10/MKS-70 as the Patch only references the Tones an oesn't actually store them in the
Patch. Because the KiwiSJX stores the Tone ata with the Patch the Tones nee to be alrea y in the memory an only on the
secon loa will the correct Tones be alrea y in memory for the Patch write to work correctly.
When Rolan JX-8P tones are importe a Patch is create with the JX-8P tone in both the Lower & Upper memory locations
an the voice mo e is set to Dual. As both voice boar s are in epen ently playing the same tone the result is a fuller soun
than the JX-8P can pro uce.
The Oberheim M1000 an other tone formats are supporte as much as is possible. Many of the parameters are ifferent
an where possible these have been converte . The result will be interesting but not always the same soun .
With all patch an Tone imports, tones that use the ENV LEVEL parameter to tune the DCOs will most likely nee a justing.
It has not prove possible to get this exact for the various synth imports while importing an some tones will soun out of
tune initially until e ite .

Front Panel Description
The Kiwi-SJX front panels iffer from the original JX-10 an MKS-70 in a number of ways an the Kiwi-SJX Upgra e
re efines many of the buttons of this synth. Buttons have been assigne new functions an others now operate ifferently.
Button overlays with the new button functions are supplie with the upgra e. These can be fitte onto the buttons an this
process is escribe in the install section later in the manual.
The new layouts can be seen on the front panel layouts on the previous pages.
Because of the number of parameters in the Kiwi-SJX the parameter e iting system has also been altere . Each parameter
has a three button a ressing system that looks like G1 B1 T1. These refer to the Group buttons 1-4, Bank buttons 1-3 &
Tone buttons 0-9. In the MKS-70 version the Bank an Group buttons share the same buttons. The Group buttons are
accesse by pressing the SHIFT button first.
Many of the other buttons have also change use an function an are escribe here in more etail.
WRITE BUTTON The WRITE button has ifferent operation
epen ing on the mo e the Kiwi-SJX is
currently in.
For writing a Patch to permanent memory
in normal play mo e simply press WRITE
followe by the Group (1-8), Bank (1-8)
an Patch (1-8). The actual write is one
when the button ENTER is presse an
the Group, Bank an Patch buttons are
optional. If the Patch you wish to save is
in the same Group or Bank or Patch you
can skip selecting these again. To access
the GROUP buttons in the MKS-70
version the SHIFT button must be
presse first.
A Patch can be easily copie from one
location to another by selecting a ifferent
Group an /or Bank an /or Tone before
pressing the ENTER button.
The Number pa numbers 0 & 9 are not
use for loa ing an saving patches.
This button is also use to put the MKS-
70 version of the Kiwi-SJX into up ate
mo e. This is one by hol ing own this
button uring power on.
Saving an moving Tones is one the
same way but the Kiwi-SJX nee s to
be in Tone e it mo e which is
achieve by hol ing own the TONE
EDIT button for 2 secon s. For more
etail see the section on e iting
Tones.
If you are e iting a sequence then the
e iting can be finishe by pressing
the Write if you wish to save the seq to
permanent memory. To save a
sequence press WRITE followe by
Number pa 1-8 followe by the
ENTER button. The Group an Bank
buttons are not use for Sequences.
The WRITE button is also use when
performing a SYSEX Dump. Once a
ump has been selecte the ump
will not start until WRITE is presse .
If the memory is protecte then an
error message will isplay when a
write to memory is attempte .
To perform a FACTORY RESET which
will clear all memory hol one WRITE
an MASTER TUNE (JX-10) or WRITE
an CHORD (MKS-70) on the as you
power on the Kiwi-SJX.
Warning – this will clear all e ory
in the synth and there will be no
confir ation.

CANCEL BUTTON The CANCEL button will exit most
operations. The Arp & Seq Step Timing
button e its will nee to be exite via the
same Step Timing button.
In the MKS-70 this button is share
with the Master Tune button.
MIDI PANIC
BUTTON
The MIDI PANIC will stop all soun from
the Kiwi-SJX.
This button is also use to put the JX-10
version of the Kiwi-SJX into up ate mo e.
This is one by hol ing own this button
uring power on.
In the MKS-70 version of the Kiwi-SJX
the SHIFT button also acts as the MIDI
PANIC. A MIDI PANIC will occur if the
Shift button is presse twice with no
other button presses.
MASTER TUNE
BUTTON
The MASTER TUNE button allows the
synth global fine tune to be set. In the
MKS-70 version the SHIFT button must
be presse first.
The Tune is change by using the Alpha
Dial.
The Master Tune can be set from A395 to
A485.
Press Master Tune Again or CANCEL to
exit master tune mo e.
In the JX-10 version to perform a
FACTORY RESET hol WRITE an
MASTER TUNE own as you power
on the Kiwi-SJX.
In the MKS-70 version the WRITE an
CHORD buttons must be hel own

MIDI BUTTON The MIDI button allows the synth global
mi i options to be set. These will be
memorise an retaine when the power
is turne off.
The button will cycle though the seven
global mi i parameters an the value is
change using the Alpha Dial

recognise by the Kiwi-SJX
2) Mi i Out - This can be 1-16

4) Soft Through – There are four possible
options.
Stop All – No incoming mi i is sent out
the Mi i Out
Pass All – All incoming mi i is sent out the
Mi i Out
Pass Only Non CC – All Mi i except CC is
passe to Mi i Out
Stop Use CC – All Mi i is passe to Mi i
Out except CC comman s that are
recognise an use by the Kiwi-SJX
5) Program Change Enable – There
are four possible options.
Off – No program change is sent or
receive
In Only – Program Change comman s
are receive but not sent
Out Only – Program Change
comman s are sent but not receive
Both In & Out – All Program

NAME BUTTON The NAME button allows the Name of the
currently selecte Patch, Tone or
Sequence to be e ite . Name e iting is
temporary until the Patch, Tone or
Sequence is change (i.e. a new one is
loa e ) an will only be retaine if the
Sequence, Patch or Tone is written to
memory.
E iting is one by selecting the letter to
change using the Left & Right Arrow
buttons an using either the Alpha Dial
for Group buttons A-H, Bank buttons for
special characters or the Number Pa for
igits.
Once e iting is finishe control can be
returne to normal mo e by any of the
following metho s.
1) CANCEL is presse
2) WRITE is presse to save the
Patch, Tone or Sequence
3) NAME is presse
When Cancel or Name is presse the
e it is only ma e in the temporary
memory an will be lost if the Patch,
Tone or sequence is change an has
not been save .

PARAMETER
BUTTON
The PARAMETER button allows e iting of
all the parameters for a Tone an Patch
as well as some of the Global Parameters.
A parameter is ma e up of three sections.
1) a 'G' letter. These are selecte using
the Group buttons 1-4.
In the MKS-70 version the Group button is
accesse by pressing SHIFT Bank
number.
2) a 'B' number. This number is selecte
from the Bank buttons 1-3
3) a 'T' number. This number is selecte
using the Tone buttons 0-9.
In the MKS-70 version the Tone Button 0
is accesse by pressing SHIFT Tone 9 &
Tone 9 is accesse by pressing SHIFT
Tone 7 number.
Every parameter will have an ID. For
example the VCF cutoff looks like 211
(G2 B1 T1). To get to this parameter
for e iting press Parameter, Group
button 2 (Shift Bank 2 in the MKS-70),
Bank button 1, Patch number button
1. The value of the cutoff can now be
change using the ALPHA DIAL.

ARP BUTTON This button will toggle the ARP On an
Off. In the JX-10 the LED will be on when
the ARP is playing.
In the MKS-70 the ARP On/Off is
accesse by pressing SHIFT LEFT
ARROW.
SEQ BUTTON This button will toggle the SEQ On an
Off. The LED will be on when the
Sequence is playing in the JX-10.
In the MKS-70 the Seq Start/Stop is
accesse by pressing SHIFT RIGHT
ARROW.
PATCH KEY MODE
BUTTON
The PATCH KEY MODE button will select
on of three Patch Key Mo e types using
the Alpha Dial.
WHOLE – The JX-10 acts like a single 12
voice synth with the Lower Tone in the
Patch soun ing on both voice boar s.
Upper Tone e its will be store but will
have no effect on the soun .
DUAL – The JX-10 acts like a 6 voice
synth an each note playe will soun
on both the Lower an Upper voice
boar . Both Tones in the Patch are
use an e its ma e on both voice
boar s will soun .
SPLIT – Notes playe below the Split
point will soun on the Lower Voice
Boar . Notes equal to an above the
split point will soun on the Upper
Voice Boar . Both Tones in the Patch
are use an e its ma e on both
voice boar s will soun .

TONE KEY MODE
BUTTON
The TONE KEY MODE button will select
one of five Tone Key Mo e types using
the Alpha Dial. Changes will only apply to
the currently selecte voice boar . In the
MKS-70 version this key is accesse
using the SHIFT Patch Key Mo e.
POLY SINGLE – Each note playe will
select a single soun ing voice. A
maximum of 6 notes can be playe .
POLY DUAL – Each note playe will
select two soun ing voices. A
maximum of 3 notes can be playe .
POLY TRIPLE – Each note playe will
select three soun ing voices. A
maximum of 2 notes can be playe .
UNISON – Only the last note playe
will select 6 soun ing voices.
SOLO – Only the last note playe will
select 1 soun ing voice.
PATCH CHORD
BUTTON
The CHORD button allows Chor s to be
set or cleare . To set a chor play the
chor near mi le C & press an release
the CHORD button while the keys are
being hel . The Chor Light will be lit
when a chor is set.
Each note playe with the chor set
will be use as the base note for the
chor . Keying will behave the same as
Unison or Solo an some keying
mo e parameters will not have any
effect.
To clear a chor press an release the
Chor Button with no keys presse .
The Chor light will turn off.
In the MKS-70 version to perform a

GLOBAL
TEMPO/MASTER
CLOCK BUTTON
The GLOBAL TEMPO BUTTON is use to
set the master internal clock rate. This is
one by pressing an releasing the
GLOBAL TEMPO button an setting the
spee using the ALPHA DIAL. The spee
range can be set from 5 BPM to 299 BPM.
Press the GLOBAL TEMPO Button again
to return to the previous mo e.
The Master Clock source can be
selecte from one of 2 sources using
Global parameter e it G4B3T4.

KEY TRANSPOSE The Kiwi-SJX JX-10 Key Transpose can be
change using this button.
While the Key Transpose Button is
presse , press the note you wish to
transpose to on the keyboar . Then
release the Key Transpose button. The
current transpose will show on the isplay
while the button is presse .
The Light above the Transpose Key
will light whenever there is a transpose
set to anything other than mi le C.
This option is not available in the
MKS-70 version of the Kiwi-SJX.

TAP TIMER The internal clock rate can be set by
using this button. Tapping this button in
time with the beat will set the internal
clock to this rate. The first tap will isplay
“TIMING TAP” an the secon tap will
isplay the actual BPM that was
measure .
This option is not available in the
MKS-70 version of the Kiwi-SJX.
SYSEX DUMP The Kiwi-SJX can output a number of
ifferent sysex umps an this button is
use to start the ump process.
The button sequence to sen a sysex
ump out the mi i out is press SYSEX
DUMP, then select the DUMP type using
the GROUP buttons then press the
WRITE button. The ump will only start
when the WRITE is presse .
A DUMP can be cancele before it starts
by pressing the CANCEL or SYSEX
DUMP buttons.
Note - Write Protect must be off to Loa
Dumps into the Kiwi-SJX
Note – The Kiwi-SJX may become
unresponsive uring a large sysex ump

GROUP 1-8 In the JX-10 version these buttons will
select Group 1 to Group 8 Patches un er
normal play mo e. The Patch will
imme iately loa .
When writing a Patch or Library Tone
these buttons will select the Group 1-8
that the Patch or Tone will be store
un er. The Patch is not written to memory
until the Patch Number Pa Enter Button
(JX-10) or ENTER button (MKS-70) is
presse . This allows a Patch to be written
(or move ) to any position in memory.
Each Group has 64 Patches (8 Banks x 8
Patches) an there are 8 Groups making
a total of 512 Patches in total.
When the Kiwi-SJX is in Tone E it
Mo e These buttons will select the
current Tone Group (1-8) for Loa ing
or Saving.
During Parameter E iting these

NUMBER PAD 0-9 Number buttons 1-8 are use for loa ing
an saving Patches an Tones. Number
buttons 0 & 9 are only use for selecting
e iting parameters.
These buttons will select Patches, Tones
or Sequences 1 to 8. The Patch or Tone
will imme iately loa an the Sequence
will loa epen ing on whether one is
running or not.
The same patch that is selecte when the
synth is switche off will loa again
automatically when the Kiwi-SJX is
switche on.
When writing a Patch or Tone these
buttons will select the Patch or Tone
number that the Patch or Tone will be
store un er. The Patch or Tone will
be written to memory when the
Number Pa ENTER Button is
presse .
Note – Write protect must be off to
write to memory. A MEM PROTECTED
message will show on the isplay if a
write is attempte with the protect on.
To Loa a sequence the SEQ LOAD
button must be presse before the
Number Pa button is presse .
ERASE
SEQUENCE
A long press of this button will allow a
Sequence to be erase .
In the MKS-70 version the SHIFT must be
presse first.
After this button is long presse the
sequence number is selecte using
the Number Pa buttons 1-8 an then
the WRITE button is presse .
To Cancel press CANCEL.
