3 System description
The romutec® RCG32 Bridge is an TCP Interface with two UARTs (RS485 Interfaces) which converts
the Modbus TCP telegrams to native RTU telegrams and vice versa.
Therefore, the TCP side is a slave device which is connected via WIFI or Ethernet to an Modbus
master device.
On serial side, the bridge is connected to a Modbus RTU network and works as master device.
The communication speed (baud rate) and also the serial config are set up in web interface.
The two serial interfaces can be set up via webserver with different settings depending baud rate,
format and parity. These two serial interfaces are named with serial 1 and serial 2. The serial 1
interface is an isolated RS485 transceiver with the terminals serial 1 A, serial 1 B and ISO GND. The
serial 2 interface is a non isolated RS485 transceiver with terminals serial 2 A and serial 2 B. Ground
potential of serial 2 is ground oft he supply voltage. End of line termination can be set for each serial
interface in the control panel via the webserver.

4 Configuration
4.1 Hardware
Maximum number of expansion modules per Modbus interface
Basically, as many modbus devices can be connected to a bus interface as addresses can be set. The
complete address range of 0 ... 254 is available, but only the adresses 1..247 are for legal-use. The
adresses 248 until 254 are reserved in Modbus protocol. However, please adhere to the DDC’s
manufacturer's recommendations concerning the maximum number of slave devices which may be
connected to the bus interface of the master device, as well as any constraints given for the address
range.
Basically, on the bridge you can connect up to 192 devices on the isolated serial 1 side and 63
devices on the non isolated serial 2 side without a Repeater.
Address 0 is reserved for multicast, the addresses 248 to 254 are reserved for bridge and similar
infrastructure functions.
Installation and wiring
Installation and wiring of the module will be done in the cabinet on the mounting plate.
Addressing Serial Interface
All incoming Modbus TCP requests are sent out on both serial interfaces. So you have to ensure that
the address of every slave device is unique over both interfaces.
Addressing TCP/IP Interface
The address of the TCP/IP interface can be set in the web interface.
You have two options:
•DHCP
•Static IP address
If you choose the option DHCP, the bridge is given an IP address from an available DHCP-Server.
If you have set a static IP instead, the bridge will work with these settings on TCP/IP.
Except of your settings, the bridge is available any time on AP mode by starting the web interface
calling the URL http://192.168.10.1. In AP mode your management device will take an IP given from
bridge (DHCP), which usually is 192.168.10.2.

Meaning of the status LED
The status LEDs are located on top of the bridge..They signal the following states:
LED Red:
LED Blue:
Button handling
The button labeled with WiFi symbol is multi functional.
Pressing the button:
- If status LED is off and you press the button once, you will activate WiFi in access point mode.
The LED starts to blink slowly red. Now you can access the webserver of the gateway if you
connect your device to the WiFi provided by the RCG32. On first start up the SSID of the WiFi
is romutec RCG32 followed by the MAC address to keep SSID unique.
WiFi password on first start up is 01234567.
If your device is connetcted succesfully to the RCG32, the status LED will turn to shine
steadily red.
All settings are configurable in the webserver.
When connection is lost, status LED will start blinking slowly again.
- If you press the WiFi button again, you will enter station mode of RCG32. The LED in this
mode will blink slowly red first. If you have set the WiFi credentials for station mode via
webserver, the RCG32 will search for an according WiFi network and connects to it. If RCG32
has established a connection succesfully, the status LED turns to shine steadily red, else it will
blink quickly red, showing that the WiFi settings are incorrect or the wanted WiFi is not
reachable.
- If you press the button again, the status LED will turn off. WiFi is completely disabled in this
state.
Holding the button:
- If you press and hold the button for 5 to 9 seconds, you can force a reboot of the RCG32.
Status LED is blinking quickly blue if you are within the 5 to 9 seconds.
- If you press and hold the button for 10 to 15 seconds, you can force a reboot including a reset
of the settings to default values. Status LED turns to shine steadily blue if you are within the
10 to 15 seconds.

4.2 Bus connection to Modbus master devices
4.2.1 Communication within Modbus master/slave systems
For communication between a controller (DDC or PLC) and the romutec® RCG32-Bridge devices, it is
necessary to configure an TCP interface of the controller as Modbus master.
To communicate with a slave device connected to the bridge, you have to send the telegrams to the
IP address of the romutec® RCG32-bridge devices. This telegram contains the request message
which is needed for the slave device, including the unique slave ID.
This is done with the programming software of the manufacturer of the controller.
For questions, please consult the manual or contact the manufacturer of the controller.
4.2.2 Terminal assignment of the Modbus RTU (RS485) port
The terminal assignment for the bus connection of the romutec® RCG32-bridge to Modbus RTU slave
devices is as follows:
Type of Interface
Function
Terminal No.
Modbus Slave
RS485-1
Rx-Tx (Net_B )
/Rx-/Tx (Net_A )
I-GND

Rx-Tx (Net_B)
/Rx-/Tx (Net_A)
GND = supply GND
1.4
1.3
1.1
Data+ (B)
Data- (A)
Bus-GND
The bus interface of serial 1 is electrically isolated. The I-GND terminals must always be wired,
whether with braided shield or individual strands, and connected to ground / earth potential. There is
no internal connection between I-GND of serial 1 and the GND of the power supply.
The terminal 1.7 is connected to the shield of the RJ45 Ethernet socket. To avoid any
unwanted behaviour of the device, connect that terminal direcly to earth potential.
4.2.3 Recommended cable types for bus wiring
For a total length up to 100m: more than 100m:
Cable type: LIYCY 1x2x0,5mm² shielded CYPIMF 1x2x0,5mm² shielded
Line resistance: < 4,0Ω / 100m < 4,0Ω / 100m
Capacitance: < 13.0nF / 100m < 6.0nF / 100m
4.2.4 Modbus commands supported
All Modbus commands (aka FC = Function Codes) are supported.
