Chapter 1
Chassis Description

The Strawberry server is a Linux based 8 bay storage server with 2 mirrored RAID OS drives that
is configured with the award winning Strawberry software for collaborative editing including
project metadata search features to accelerate, integrate and improve your workflow. It provides
Gig E and Fibre Channel connectivity to your network environment with optional 10 GigE or SAS
I/O. The chassis is shipped in a container designed to protect and prevent damage during
shipment. The chassis was carefully inspected before and during the packing procedure at the
factory. Evidence of any damage to the Strawberry server should be reported to the shipper
immediately.
NOTE
Electrostatic discharge can damage electronic components. Be sure you are properly
grounded before beginning any procedure.

Chapter 2
Chassis Summary
The Strawberry server chassis is designed to support 8 Hot Swappable SAS Hard Disk Drive
(HDD), server mother board, and two Redundant PFC Power Supplies. The Strawberry server
only has good and fault conditions for disk drive activity and indicators for the power supply.
Green LEDs indicate good condition, red LEDs indicate a problem that will also sound an audible
alarm. The Power button located on the front is used to power up the server. PC Doctor™ is a
software based computer health program that runs while the server is powered on and gives the
client a useful interface to server related problems like power, heat, and fan status.

There are three push-buttons located on the front of the chassis: UID button, a reset button and a
power on/off button.
UID
Depressing the UID (unit identifier) button illuminates an LED on both the front and rear of the
chassis for easy system location in large stack configurations. The LED will remain on until the
button is pushed a second time. Another UID button on the rear of the chassis serves the same
function.
Reset
The reset button is used to reboot the system.
Power
The main power switch is used to apply or remove power from the power supply to the server
system. Turning off system power with this button removes the main power but keeps standby
power supplied to the system.

Control Panel LEDs
The control panel located on the front of the Strawberry chassis has five LEDs. These LEDs

provide you with critical information related to different parts of the system.
This section explains what each LED indicates when illuminated and any corrective action you
may need to take.
UID/Overheat/Fan Fail/Power Fail
This LED turns on when either the front or the rear UID button is pushed. Pushing either button a
second time will turn this LED off. When this LED fl ashes it indicates a fan failure. When on
continuously (on and not flashing) it indicates an overheat condition, which may be caused by
cables obstructing the airflow in the system or the ambient room temperature being too warm.
Check the routing of the cables and make sure all fans are present and operating normally. You
should also check to make sure that the chassis covers are installed. This LED will remain fl
ashing or on as long as the overheat condition exists.
NIC2
Indicates network activity on GLAN2 when flashing .
NIC1
Indicates network activity on GLAN1 when flashing.
HDD
This light indicates HDD and/or DVD-ROM drive activity when flashing.
Power
Indicates power is being supplied to the system's power supply units. This LED
should normally be illuminated when the system is operating.
Drive Carrier LEDs
Green: Each hard drive carrier has a green LED. When illuminated, this green LED indicates
drive activity. A connection to the SAS backplane enables this LED to blink on and off when that
particular drive is being accessed. Please refer to Chapter 8 for instructions on replacing failed
hard drives.
Red: The red LED to indicate a hard drive failure. If one of the drives fail, you should be notified
by your system management software if you have setup email notification. Please refer to
Chapter 8 for instructions on replacing failed hard drives.

Power Supply LEDs
The Strawberry Server has a 700 watt redundant power supply consisting of two power modules.
Each power supply module has an auto-switching capability, which enables it to automatically
sense and operate at a 100V - 240V input voltage. If either of the two power supply modules fail,
the other module will take the full load and allow the system to continue operation without
interruption. The PWR Fail LED will illuminate and remain on until the failed unit has been
replaced. Replacement units can be ordered directly from Rorke Data. The power supply units
have a hot-swap capability, meaning you can replace the failed unit without powering down the
system.
PS2 Keyboard / Mouse / USB VGA
Use these connections for Keybd, mouse, or monitor during setup. After setup, typically the
server will be administered remotely, these are not used.
IPMI I/O
The IP address for IPMI can be configured from the motherboard’s BIOS. Once configured, the
IPMI can be accessed from http://ip_address with username: ADMIN and password: ADMIN

10Gb/s Ports
The built in 10Gb/s ports are typically used in a high bandwidth LAN configuration. Contact tech
support for connectivity and usage .
Fibre Channel [FC] I/O
Use this connection for your FC storage or to connect to the SAN so the Strawberry can see the
storage that your Strawberry clients will be using. Note that a FC SAN software client license is
needed if the Strawberry server joins a SAN.
Ethernet 0, 1, 3
These 1Gb/s ethernet connections are used to connect to the corporate LAN / internet, metadata
LAN management, and possibly another Strawberry as a heartbeat in a clustered High Availability
configuration.
NOTE: An Internet connection to the Strawberry server is required so that licensing and
updates can be done.

Chapter 3
Installing the System into a Rack
The Strawberry Server is a rack mounted chassis. Mounting holes on the front panel are set to
RETMA spacing and will fit into any standard equipment rack with 3.5 inches of available vertical
space.
CAUTION: Slide/rail mounted equipment is not to be used as a shelf or work space.

This document should be used only as an information source for planning your deployment. Avoid
personal injury and equipment damage by following accepted safety practices.
Floor Loading
CAUTION: Ensure proper floor support and ensure that the floor loading specifications are adhered
to. Failure to do so may result in physical injury or damage to the equipment and the facility.
Deployment of rack servers, related equipment, and cables exceeds 1800 pounds for a single
42U rack. External cable weight contributes to overall of the rack installation. Carefully consider
cable weight in all designs.

Installation Requirement
CAUTION: Be aware of the center of gravity and tipping hazards. Installation should be such that a
hazardous stability condition is avoided due to uneven loading. Alpha recommends that the rack
footings extend 10 inches from the front and back of any rack equipments 22U or higher.
Adequate stabilization measures are required. Ensure that the entire rack assembly is properly
secured and that all personnel are trained in proper maintenance and operation procedures.
Tipping hazards include personal injury and death.

Power Input and Grounding
CAUTION: Access to the rear of the server and it’s power cords must be
maintained to allow for emergency disconnect purposes. Mount the server in a
rack or desktop to allow for easy access to the server power cords so they can be
pulled out in an emergency situation.

strips, rather than direct connections to the branch circuit.

Thermal Dissipation Requirement

required for safe operation is not compromised. The maximum temperature for the equipment in
this environment is 122°F (50°C). Consideration should be given to the maximum rated ambient.

CAUTION
It is strongly recommended to securely fasten the mounting rack to the floor or wall to
eliminate any possibility of tipping of the rack. This is especially important if you decide
to install several Strawberry server chassis’ in the top of the rack.

A brief overview of server installation follows:
1. Select an appropriate site for the rack.
2. Unpack the server and rack mounting hardware.
3. Attach the rack mounting hardware to the rack and to the server.
4. Mount the server into the rack.
5. Connect the cables.
6. Turn on and initialize the server.
CAUTION
It is always best practice to not connect any power cables or system cables to the
system before mounting the server in the rack as this may cause a safety or connection
problem. Connect the cables only after the system is installed.

Ball Bearing Slide Rail Rack Installation
Unpack the package box and locate the materials and documentation necessary for rack
mounting. All the equipment needed to install the server into the rack cabinet is included.
Kit Contents
The chassis package includes two rack rail assemblies in the rack mounting kit.
Each assembly consists of two sections: an inner fixed chassis rail that secures
directly to the server chassis and an outer fixed rack rail that secures directly to
the rack itself.

Locking Tabs
Both chassis rails have a locking tab. The tabs lock the server into place when installed and
pushed fully into the rack. These tabs also lock the server in place when fully extended from the
rack. This prevents the server from coming completely out of the rack when you pull it out for
servicing.
Inner Rail Extension
The inner rails are pre-attached and do not interfere with normal use of the chassis if you decide
not to use a server rack. Attach the inner rail extension to stabilize the chassis within the rack. If
you are not using a rack, you do not have to install the inner rail extensions.

Installing the Inner Rails
1. Place the inner rack extensions on the side of the chassis aligning the hooks of the
chassis with the rail extension holes. Make sure the extension faces "outward" just
like the pre-attached inner rail.
2. Slide the extension toward the front of the chassis.
3. Secure the chassis with 2 screws as illustrated. Repeat steps for the other inner rail
extension.
Inner Rail Extension
Outer rails attach to the server rack and hold the server in place. The outer rails for the chassis
extend between 30 inches and 33 inches.
Installing the Inner Rails
1. Attach the short bracket to the outside of the long bracket. You must align the pins with
the slides. Also, both bracket ends must face the same direction.
2. Adjust both the short and long brackets to the proper distance so that the rail fits snugly
into the rack.
3. Secure the long bracket to the front side of the outer rail with two M5 screws and the
short bracket to the rear side of the outer rail with three M5 screws.
4. Repeat steps 1-4 for the left outer rail.

1. Confirm that chassis includes the inner rails and rail extensions. Also, confirm that
the outer rails are installed on the rack.
2. Line chassis rails with the front of the rack rails.
3. Slide the chassis rails into the rack rails, keeping the pressure even on both sides
(you may have to depress the locking tabs when inserting). When the server has
been pushed completely into the rack, you should hear the locking tabs "click".
4. (Optional) Insert and tightening the thumbscrews that hold the front of the server to
the rack.

Preparing for Operation
CAUTION
Important: The Strawberry server EULA restricts you, the user, from using any other
software, such as application software. Loading or use of any software voids the
license agreement.

Based on your usage and system functions, Strawberry can be used to be the project manager
for various configurations. Each Strawberry server is preloaded at the factory with its base
operating system, installation and administration software. The Linux OS along with Windows
2008 R2 Web Virtual Machine is loaded on the internal mirrored storage where it is protected.
Note: if you are putting a Strawberry into an existing SAN you will need to provide
SAN licensing for the Strawberry OS below based on that SAN type:
StorNext / XSAN SAN software: You will need a Linux license for the Strawberry.
HyperFS SAN Software: You will need a HyperFS license for the Strawberry

This is a typical LAN only configuration. The Strawberry server with locally attached storage will
have a NAS function to LAN project clients. The Strawberry requires 3 IP addresses to operate
in this way. Eth 0 will connect to the local metadata LAN but need 2 IP addresses, one for the
SAN IP and the other for the Strawberry IP.Eth 1 will connect to the corporate / house ethernet
and will require a corporate / house IP address to get Internet access for licensing and firmware /
software updates.
