RAM ION Cleaning Instructions

1Purpose
This document describes the procedure for cleaning the RAM ION meter. In some cases, due to very high humidity in
the air, the background readings from the RAM ION will be unusually high. The silica gel, which is meant to protect
the internal electronics may not be sufficient to dry the air and sometimes even if the air is dried, there may remain
particles from the air inside the chamber which have now dried but are causing unusually high background readings.
The background of the RAM ION should not be more than 0.01 mR/h.
IMPORTANT
The cleaning of the RAM ION should be done in a clean, dustless environment
We recommend using compressed air as a cleaning agent.
Before opening the Chamber, please check that the flat cable of the Touch Panel is connected properly by following
the procedure below:
1. Open the 4 screws holding the Touch panel in place

2. Check that the flat cable is connected solidly and correctly.
3. Close the Touch Panel and replace the screws
4. Open the three screws connecting the chamber to the chassis as shown below

5. Remove the silica gel cartridge and remove the screw connecting the electronics to the chassis
6. Separate the electronics from the chassis

7. Using air pressure, clean the interior parts
8. Close the Ion Chamber and connect it to the chassis. It is very important to close the screw in the silica gel
chamber tightly to avoid noise entering the chamber.
If there is suspicion of dirt inside the Ion Chamber or a loose electrode, open the Ion Chamber as follows:
1. Open the plastic screws holding the Ion Chamber in place

2. Remove the Ion Chamber and clean using compressed air
3. If necessary tighten the electrode with your fingers:

1. Replace the silica gel container to dry silica gel and connect the silica gel capsule to the detector.
2. Following a 24 hour drying period, replace the silica gel one more time and after another 24 hours, the
instrument should not show more than 0.01 mR/h
