Do not allow children or untrained individuals to use this
unit.
Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to
be used and remove all foreign objects.
Dress Properly — Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry.
They can be caughtinmoving parts.Useof rubber gloves
and substantial footwear is recommended when work-
ing outdoors. Wear protective hair covering to contain
long hair. Wear heavy long pants, long sleeves, boots
and gloves. Do not wear sandals or go barefoot.
Use Safety Glasses —Always wear eye protection with
side shields marked to comply with ANSI Z87.1 when
operating this product. Wear head protection when
operating this equipment above shoulder level.
Secure long hair above shoulder level to prevent entan-
glement in moving parts.
Keep Children Away —Keep all bystanders, children,
and pets at least 50 ft. away. Bystanders should be
encouraged to wear eye protection.
Stay Alert — Watch what you are doing; use common
sense. Do not operate this unit when you are tired, ill, or
under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication.
Do not operate in poor lighting.
Don’t Overreach — Keep firm footing and balance. Do
not overreach. Overreaching can result in loss of balance
or exposure to hot surfaces.
Keep all parts of your body away from any moving part.
Inspect the unit before each use for loose fasteners, etc.
Replace any damaged parts before use.
Store Idle Trimmers Indoors — When not in use, product
should be stored indoors in a dry, locked up place—out
of the reach of children.
When servicing use only identical replacement parts.
Failure to do so may cause poor performance, possible
injury, and will void your warranty.
Do not, under any circumstance, use any attachment or
accessory on this product which was not provided with
the product or identified as appropriate for use with this
product in the operator’s manual.
Avoid Dangerous Environments—Donot use theproduct
in damp or wet locations.
Do not use in rain.
Use the Right Appliance — Do not use the hedge trimmer
for any job except that for which it is intended.
Do not use on steps, a ladder, rooftop, or unstable sup-
port. Stable footing on a solid surface enables better
control of the product in unexpected situations.
Do Not Force the Hedge Trimmer — It will do the job
better and with less likelihood of a risk of injury at the
rate for which it was designed.
DANGER! — Risk of Cut — Keep Hands Away From
Blades — Keep both hands on handles when power is
on.
Do notattempttoremovecutmaterial whenbladeismov-
ing. Make sure hedge trimmer is off and extension cord
is unplugged from power source when clearing jammed
materials from blades. Do not grasp the exposed cutting
blades or cutting edges when picking up or holding the
hedge trimmer.
CAUTION! — Blade coasts after being turned off.
To reduce the risk of electric shock, this product has a
polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other) and will
require the use of a polarized extension cord. The plug
will fit into a polarized extension cord only one way. If the
plug does not fit fully into the extension cord, reverse the
plug. If the plug still does not fit, obtain a correct polarized
extension cord. A polarized extension cord will require
the use of a polarized wall outlet. This plug will fit into the
polarized wall outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit
fully into the wall outlet, reverse the plug. If the plug still
does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the
proper wall outlet. Do not change the equipment plug,
extension cord receptacle, or extension cord plug in any
way.
Do Not Abuse the Cord — Never use the cord to carry
the product or to disconnect the plug from an outlet.
Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving
parts. Replace damaged cords immediately. Damaged
cords increase the risk of electric shock.
Extension Cord — make sure your extension cord is in
good condition. Make knot as illustrated in figure 1. When
using an extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough
to carry the current your product will draw. A wire gauge
size (A.W.G.) of at least 16 is recommended for an ex-
tension cord 50 feet or less in length. If in doubt, use the
next heavier gauge. The smaller the gauge number, the
heavier the cord. An undersized cord will cause a drop in
line voltage resulting in loss of power and overheating.
 WARNING! — To reduce the risk of electric shock, use only
outdoor extension cords marked SW-A, SOW-A, STW-A,
STOW-A, SJW-A, SJTW-A, or SJTOW-A. These cords are
rated for outdoor use and reduce the risk of electric shock.

Use non-slip, heavy-duty protective gloves when operat-
ing the hedge trimmer and when installing or removing
blades.
Replace any blade that has been damaged. Always make
sure blade is installed correctly and securely fastened be-
fore each use. Failure to do so can cause serious injury.
Never cut any material over 2/3 in. diameter.
Maintain a firm grip on both handles while cutting with a
blade. Keep the blade away from body.
Know how to stop the unit quickly in an emergency.
Do not use trimmer without front handles in place. Keep
both hands on handles when the unit is in use.
If hedge trimmer is equipped with a debris deflector, do
not use the debris deflector as a gripping surface.
Disconnect Hedge Trimmer — Disconnect the plug from
power source before making any adjustments, changing
accessories, storing the hedge trimmer, or before servic-
ing. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of
starting the product accidentally.
Service on the product must be performed by qualified
repair personnel only. Service or maintenance performed
by unqualified personnel could result in injury to the user
or damage to the product.
If the power supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced
only by the manufacturer or by an authorized service
center to avoid risk.
Save these instructions. Refer to them frequently and use
them to instruct others who may use this tool. If you loan
someone this tool, loan them these instructions also to
prevent misuse of the product and possible injury.
Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection should
be provided on the circuit(s) or outlet(s) to be used for the
hedge trimmer. Receptacles are available having built-in
GFCI protection and may be used for this measure of
safety.
Inspect extension cords periodically and replace if
damaged. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil or
grease.
Disconnect Hedge Trimmer — Always stop the motor and
disconnect from power supply when not in use, before
attemptingtoremoveany obstructioncaughtorjammedin
the blade, or before removing and installing the blade.
AvoidAccidentalStarting— Nevercarry pluggedinhedge
trimmer with finger on switch. Be sure switch is off when
plugging in.
Maintain Hedge Trimmer With Care — Keep cutting edge
sharp and clean for best performance and to reduce the
riskof injury.Follow instructionsforlubricating andchang-
ing accessories. Inspect hedge trimmer cord periodically
and, if damaged, have it repaired by an authorized service
facility. Inspect extension cords periodically and replace
if damaged. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil
and grease.
Check damaged parts — Before further use of the hedge
trimmer, a guard or other part that is damaged should be
carefullycheckedtodetermine that itwill operate properly
and perform its intended function. Check for alignment of
moving parts, binding of moving parts, breakage of parts,
mounting, and any other condition that may affect its
operation. A guard or other part that is damaged should
be properly repaired or replaced by an authorized service
center unless indicated elsewhere in this manual.

It is possible to tie the extension cord and power cord in a
knot to prevent them from becoming disconnected during
use. Make the knot as shown in figure 1, then connect the
plug end of the power cord into the receptacle end of the
extension cord. This method can also be used to tie two
extension cords together.
DOUBLE INSULATION
Double insulation is a concept in safety in electric power
tools, which eliminates the need for the usual three-
wire grounded power cord. All exposed metal parts are
isolated from the internal metal motor components with
protecting insulation. Double insulated tools do not need
to be grounded.
WARNING:
The double insulated system is intended to protect
the user from shock resulting from a break in the tool’s
internal insulation. Observe all normal safety precautions
to avoid electrical shock.
NOTE: Servicing of a product with double insulation requires
extreme care and knowledge of the system and should be
performed only by a qualified service technician. For service,
we suggest you return the product to your nearest authorized
service center for repair. Always use original factory replace-
ment parts when servicing.
ELECTRICAL CONNECTION
This product has a precision-built electric motor. It should
be connected to a power supply that is 120 volts, AC only,
60 Hz (normal household current). Do not operate this
product on direct current (DC). A substantial voltage drop
will cause a loss of power and the motor will overheat. If
the product does not operate when plugged into an outlet,
double-check the power supply.
EXTENSION CORDS
See Figure 1.
When using a power tool at a considerable distance from
a power source, be sure to use an extension cord that has
the capacity to handle the current the product will draw. An
undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage, resulting in
overheating and loss of power. Use the chart to determine
the minimum wire size required in an extension cord. Only
round jacketed cords listed by Underwriter’s Laboratories
(UL) should be used.
When working outdoors with a product, use an extension
cord that is designed for outside use. This type of cord is
designated with “W-A” or “W” on the cord’s jacket.
Before using any extension cord, inspect it for loose or ex-
posed wires and cut or worn insulation.
A proper extension cord is available at an authorized service
center.

KNOW YOUR HEDGE TRIMMER
See Figure 2.
The safe use of this product requires an understanding of the
information on the product and in this operator’s manual as
well as a knowledge of the project you are attempting. Before
use of this product, familiarize yourself with all operating
features and safety rules.
BLADE COVER
The blade cover keeps the operator from coming in contact
with the sharp blades when the tool is not in use. It also helps
keep the blades from being nicked or damaged when the
tool is in storage.
CORD RETAINER
A convenient cord retainer helps keep the extension cord
connection secure during trimmer operation.
DEBRIS DEFLECTOR
When installed, the debris deflector makes removal of cut
debris easier.
GUARD
The guard helps to deflect chips or other debris away from
the operator’s hands.
ROTATING REAR HANDLE
The rear handle can be rotated to lock at either side in 45°
or 90° angles for ease of use when trimming. This is useful
when trimming vertically or along the sides of shrubbery.
SWITCH TRIGGER
The switch trigger, located beneath the rear handle, must
be depressed while simultaneously grasping the switch in
the front handle to allow blade rotation.

UNPACKING
This product has been shipped completely assembled.
Carefully remove the product and any accessories from
the box. Make sure that all items listed in the packing list
are included.
WARNING:
Do not use this product if it is not completely assembled
or if any parts appear to be missing or damaged. Use of
a product that is not properly and completely assembled
could result in serious personal injury.
Inspect the product carefully to make sure no breakage
or damage occurred during shipping.
Do not discard the packing material until you have care-
fully inspected and satisfactorily operated the product.

APPLICATIONS
You may use this product for the purpose listed below:
Trimming and shaping hedges and shrubbery
Before each use, inspect the entire product for damaged,
missing, or loose parts such as screws, nuts, bolts, caps, etc.
Tighten securely all fasteners and caps and do not operate
this product until all missing or damaged parts are replaced.

INSTALLING DEBRIS DEFLECTOR
See Figure 3.
NOTE: Always wear non-slip, heavy-duty gloves when in-
stalling or removing the debris deflector.
Disconnect the plug from the power source.
Place the hedge trimmer on a sturdy flat surface.
Align the angled edge of the debris deflector with the
grooves on the guide bar.
Slide the deflector completely onto the guide bar so the
angled edge of the deflector rests beneath the guard.
Insert the deflector retainer in the end of guide bar.
WARNING:
Never use the debris deflector as a handle or attempt to
hold or guide the hedge trimmer by gripping the debris
deflector. Always keep both hands on the hedge trimmer
handles. Improper handling of hedge trimmer could result
in serious injury.
CONNECTING TO POWER SUPPLY
See Figure 4.
This product is designed with a cord retainer that prevents
the extension cord from being pulled loose while using.
Form a loop with the end of the extension cord.
Insert loop portion of extension cord through opening in
the bottom of the rear handle and place over cord retainer.
Slowly pull loop against cord retainer until the slack is
removed.
Plug product into extension cord.
NOTE: Failure to remove all excess cord slack from ex-
tension cord retainer could result in plug loosening from
receptacle.
STARTING AND STOPPING
See Figure 5.
Attach the outlet end of an extension cord to the plug
on the rear of the hedge trimmer. Route extension cord
through cord retainer as shown on the next page.
NOTE: Use only an approved outdoor extension cord as
described previously in this manual.
Grasp the front handle with your left hand and the rear
handle with your right hand.
The front handle switch and the switch trigger must be
depressed simultaneously to begin blade rotation.
To stop blade rotation, release the switch trigger.
ROTATING HANDLE
See Figure 6.
The handle can be rotated 45° or 90° to the left or to the right.
To rotate handle:
Disconnect the plug from the power source.
Pull back on the rotating handle knob.
Turn handle to the right or to the left.
Release rotating handle knob.
Keep turning handle until it locks into place in one of the
45° or 90° positions.
NOTE: The trimmer will only operate at one of these locked
positions. The handle is locked when the rotating handle
knob is securely in place, is not extended, and the handle
will no longer move to either side.

CUTTING TIPS
See Figures 7 - 8.
DANGER:
Never cut near electric cords or lines. If blade jams on
any electrical cord or line, DO NOT TOUCH THE BLADE!
IT CAN BECOME ELECTRICALLY LIVE AND VERY
DANGEROUS. Continue to hold the hedge trimmer by
the insulated rear handle or lay it down and away from
you in a safe manner. Disconnect the electrical service
to the damaged line or cord before attempting to free
the blade from the line or cord. Contact with the blade,
other conductive parts of the hedge trimmer, or live
electric cords or lines will result in death by electrocution
or serious injury.
WARNING:
Always keep both hands on the hedge trimmer handles.
Never hold shrubs with one hand and operate hedge trim-
mer with the other. Improper handling of hedge trimmer
could result in serious injury.
WARNING:
Clear the area to be cut before each use. Remove all
objects such as cords, lights, wire, or loose string which
can become entangled in the cutting blade and create a
risk of electric shock and serious personal injury.
When operating the hedge trimmer, keep the extension
cord behind the trimmer. Never drape it over the hedge
being trimmed.
Do not force the hedge trimmer through heavy shrubbery.
This can cause the blades to bind and slow down. If the
blades slow down, reduce the pace.
Do not attempt to cut stems or twigs that are larger than
2/3 in. thick, or those obviously too large to feed into the
cutting blade. Use a non-powered hand saw or pruning
saw to trim large stems.
If blades do become jammed, stop the motor, allow the
blades to stop, and disconnect the plug from the power
source before attempting to remove the obstruction.
If desired, you can use a string to help cut your hedge
level. Decide how high you want the hedge. Stretch a
piece of string along the hedge at the desired height.
Trim the hedge just above the guide line of string. Trim
the side of a hedge so that it will be slightly narrower at
the top. More of the hedge will be exposed when shaped
this way, and it will be more uniform.
Always wear gloves when using the hedge trimmer. When
trimmingnewgrowth,usea wide sweepingaction, so that
the stems are fed directly into the cutting blade. Older
growth will have thicker stems and will be trimmed easi-
est by using a sawing movement.
OPERATING THE HEDGE TRIMMER
WARNING:
Read the safety information for safe operation using the
blade. Extreme care must be taken when using blades to
ensure safe operation. Refer to Important Safety Instruc-
tions and Specific Safety Rules.
Always hold hedge trimmer with both hands when op-
erating. Use a firm grip on the handles. The unit is used
for cutting in either direction in a slow, sweeping action
from side to side.
Stand so that you are stable and balanced on both feet.
Do not overreach.
Inspect and clear the area of any hidden objects.
Never use the hedge trimmer near power lines, fencing,
posts, buildings, or other immovable objects.
Never use a blade after hitting a hard object without first
inspecting it for damage. Do not use if any damage is
detected.

Always wear eye protection with side shields marked to
comply with ANSI Z87.1. Wear head protection when
operating this equipment above shoulder level. Failure

Before inspecting, cleaning, or servicing the machine,
disconnect the plug from power source and wait for all
moving parts to stop. Failure to follow these instruc-
tions can result in serious personal injury or property
damage.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE
Before each use, inspect the entire product for damaged,
missing, or loose parts such as screws, nuts, bolts, caps, etc.
Tighten securely all fasteners and caps and do not operate
this product until all missing or damaged parts are replaced.
Please call 1-800-860-4050 or contact an authorized service
center for assistance.
Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Most
plastics are susceptible to damage from various types of
commercial solvents and may be damaged by their use. Use
clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, grease, etc.
WARNING:
Do not at any time let brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum-
based products, penetrating oils, etc., come in contact
with plastic parts. Chemicals can damage, weaken, or
destroy plastic which may result in serious personal
injury.
Only the parts shown on the parts list are intended to be
repaired or replaced by the customer. All other parts should
be replaced at an Authorized Service Center.
WARNING:
Blades are sharp. When handling the blade assembly,
wear non-slip, heavy-duty protective gloves. Do not place
your hand or fingers between blades or in any position
where they could get pinched or cut. NEVER touch blades
or service unit with the power supply connected.
LUBRICATING THE BLADE
See Figure 9.
For easier operation and longer blade life, lubricate the hedge
trimmer blade before and after each use.
Stop the motor and disconnect plug from power supply.
Lay the hedge trimmer on a flat surface. Apply light weight
machine oil along the edge of the top blade.
If you will be using the hedge trimmer for an extended period,
it is advisable to oil the blade during use.
NOTE: Do not oil while the hedge trimmer is running.
Stop the motor and disconnect plug from power supply.
Lubricate the hedge trimmer as described above.
Reconnect plug to the power source and resume use.
SHARPENING THE BLADE
See Figure 10.
Allow the blades of the hedge trimmer to come to a stop
in the position shown. This will allow clearance for the
file between the cutter teeth and the guard teeth.
Disconnect the plug from the power source.
Clamp the blade assembly in a vise and file the exposed
cutting surface of each blade tooth with an 8 in. smooth
round file, 1/4 in. or 7/32 in. in diameter. Be sure to retain
the original angle of the tooth when filing.
Remove the hedge trimmer from the vise, reconnect plug
to the power source, and restart the hedge trimmer. Al-
low the blades of the hedge trimmer to come to a stop
so that the unsharpened edges on the other side of the
cutter blade teeth are exposed.
Disconnect the plug from the power source and repeat
the sharpening procedure as described above.
CLEANING THE HEDGE TRIMMER
Stop the motor and disconnect plug from power supply.
Clean dirt and debris from the body of the hedge trimmer,
using a damp cloth with a mild detergent.
NOTE: Do not use any strong detergents on the plastic
housing or the handle. They can be damaged by certain
aromatic oils such as pine and lemon, and by solvents
such as kerosene.
TRANSPORTING AND STORING
See Figure 11.
Always place the blade cover on the blade before storing
or transporting the hedge trimmer. Use caution to avoid
the sharp teeth of the blade.
Clean the hedge trimmer thoroughly before storing. Store
the hedge trimmer indoors, in a dry place that is inacces-
sible to children. Keep away from corrosive agents such
as garden chemicals and de-icing salts.

Techtronic Industries North America, Inc., warrants to the
original retail purchaser that this RYOBI®brand outdoor
product is free from defect in material and workmanship
and agrees to repair or replace, at Techtronic Industries
North America, Inc.’s, discretion, any defective product
free of charge within these time periods from the date of
purchase.
Three years if the product is used for personal, family
or household use;
90 days, if used for any other purpose, such as
commercial or rental.
This warranty extends to the original retail purchaser only
and commences on the date of the original retail purchase.
Any part of this product found in the reasonable judgment
of Techtronic Industries North America, Inc. to be defective
in material or workmanship will be repaired or replaced
without charge for parts and labor by an authorized service
center for RYOBI®brand outdoor products (Authorized
Ryobi Service Center).

Pour réduire le risque d’un choc électrique, ce produit est
muni d’une fiche polarisée (une lame est plus large que
l’autre) et il nécessitera un cordon d’extension polarisé.
La fiche peut être branchée à un cordon d’extension
polarisé seulement d’une façon. Si la fiche ne peut pas
être branchée complètement dans le cordon d’extension,
renversez la fiche. Si la fiche ne peut toujours pas être
branchée, procurez-vous un cordon d’extension approprié.
Un cordon d’extension polarisé exige l’utilisation d’une
prise murale polarisée. La fiche peut être branchée à une

Cordon prolongateurs — Assurez-vous que le cordon
d’extension est en bon état. Faire le nœud tel qu’illustré
à la figure 1. Quand vous utilisez le cordon d’extension,
assurez-vous d’utiliser un cordon de calibre approprié
pour rapporter le courant que votre produit soutirera.
Pour un cordon d’extension de 15,3 m (50 pi) ou moins, il
est recommandé d’utiliser un câble de calibre d’au moins
16 AWG. En cas de doute, utilisez le calibre supérieur
suivant. Plus le numéro de jauge est petit, plus le calibre
est élevé. Un cordon prolongateur de calibre insuffisant
causera une perte de tension et provoquera ainsi une
panne électrique et une surchauffe.

électrique, utilisez les cordons prolongateurs seulement
pour extérieur marqués SW-A, SOW-A, STW-A, STOW-A,

Les circuits utilisés avec la taille-haies devraient être munis

Il est possible d’attacher le cordon d’alimentation et le cordon
prolongateur par un noeud pour éviter qu’ils se détachent
pendant l’utilisation. Faites le noeud comme illustré dans
la figure 1 et branchez la fiche du cordon d’alimentation
dans la prise du cordon prolongateur. Cette méthode peut
aussi être utilisée pour attacher ensemble deux cordons
prolongateurs.
ISOLATION DOUBLE
L’isolation double est un concept de sécurité des outils
électriques qui élimine le besoin de cordon d’alimentation
à trois fiches habituel. Toutes les pièces métalliques
sont isolées des parties métalliques du moteur interne par
une isolation protectrice. Des outils à double isolation n’ont
pas besoin de mise à terre.

CONNEXION ÉLECTRIQUE
Ce produit est équipé d’un moteur électrique de précision.
Il doit être branché uniquement sur une alimentation 120 V,
c.a., 60 Hz (courant résidentiel standard). N’utilisez pas
cet outil sur une source de courant continu (c.c.). Une chute
de tension importante causerait une perte de puissance et
une surchauffe du moteur. Si le produit ne fonctionne pas
une fois branché, vérifiez l’alimentation électrique.
CORDONS PROLONGATEURS
Voir la figure 1.
Quand vous utilisez l’outil électrique à une distance
considérable de la source d’alimentation en électricité,
assurez-vous d’utiliser un cordon prolongateur de capacité
suffisante pour rapporter le courant que le produit soutirera Un
cordon prolongateur de calibre insuffisant causera une perte
de tension et provoquera ainsi une surchauffe et une perte
de puissance. Utilisez le tableau pour déterminer le calibre
minimum de fil requis pour un cordon prolongateur. Utilisez
exclusivement des cordons à gaine cylindrique homologués
par Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL).
Pour les travaux à l’extérieur, utilisez un cordon prolongateur
spécialement conçu à cet effet. La gaine des cordons de ce
type porte l’inscription « W-A » ou « W ».
Avant d’utiliser un cordon prolongateur, vérifier que ses fils
ne sont ni détachés ni exposés et que son isolation n’est ni
coupée, ni usée.
Il est possible de se procurer une rallonge électrique
appropriée dans un centre de service autorisé.

AVERTISSEMENT :
Tenez le cordon prolongateur loin de la zone de travail.
Placez le cordon de façon à ce qu’il ne puisse pas être
pris dans les pièces de bois, des outils ou d’autres
obstructions quand vous travaillez avec un outil
électrique. Le non respect de cet avertissement pourrait
résulter en des blessures graves.
AVERTISSEMENT :
Vérifiez les cordons prolongateurs avant chaque usage.
Remplacez immédiatement les cordons endommagés.
N’utilisez jamais le produit avec un cordon endommagé
car le contact avec l’endroit endommagé pourrait causer
un choc électrique et résulter un une blessure sérieuse.

L’utilisation sûre de ce produit exige une comprehension des
renseignements figurant sur le produit et contenus dans le
manuel d’utilisation, ainsi qu’une bonne connaissance du
projet entrepris. Avant d’utiliser ce produit, se familiariser
avec toutes ses caractéristiques et règles de sécurité.
FOURREAU DE LAME
Le fourreau de lame empêche que l’opérateur entre en
contact avec les lames tranchantes lorsque l’outil n’est pas
en usage. Il évite également que les lames soient ébréchées
ou endommagées pendant le remisage.
RETENUE DE CORDON
Une retenue de cordon adéquate permet d’immobiliser
la connexion de la rallonge lors du fonctionnement de la
taille-haies.
DÉFLECTEUR DE DÉBRIS
Une fois installé, le déflecteur de débris facilite le nettoyage
des débris de coupe.
GARDE
La garde aide à protéger les mains de l’opérateur des débris
projetés.
POIGNÉE ARRIÈRE PIVOTANTE
Il est possible de tourner la poignée arrière d’un côté ou de
l’autre et de la verrouiller à un angle de 45 ° ou 90 ° pour
