FOREWORD
1. This manual is integral part of the shipment and it is supplied with the Product even if not listed in
the invoice.
This manual can also be sent during purchase negotiation on Buyer’s request provided that the
Buyer states end application of the Product.
Except as expressly request by the Buyer, only one copy of this manual may be attached to
shipments consisting of more than one unit of the Product.
Additional or updated copies of this document may be found on our web site at the following
address: www.s2tech.it
2. The Products, which are the subjects of this manual, are designed and manufactured for general use;
therefore, being not possible to specify limits of use for all applications, the Buyer shall introduce
safety measures in order to avoid personal injuries, damages to property or damages due to plants
stoppage, etc.
In case of use that can cause risk of damages, the Buyer shall immediately advise the Supplier in
order that it can suggest safety solutions or can decide to reject the order and not to deliver the
Product.
3. AN401 series of instruments are not certified instruments; it is Buyer’s responsibility to check
instrument suitability to the requirements of the specific application.
4. AN401 series of instruments, even when connected to transducers or other equipment, are only parts
of more complex systems and plants; they are sold in thousands per year, for the most different
applications which shall meet as many different norms that are not always known to the Supplier.
For these reasons, S2Tech is obliged to disclaim all responsibility concerning the use of the
instrument; however, a list of the most elementary and basic precautions for the correct use of the
instrument is given in this manual.
Besides, the need of a complete and specific insurance policy is highlighted, especially when
systems and machinery are to be installed in Countries like United States or Canada.
5. AN401 series of instruments are designed and manufactured by S2Tech conforming to the highest
quality standards; the instruments are rugged and designed to the highest possible safety and
reliability: limitations and precautions listed in this manual are aimed to draw Buyer’s attention to
the importance of avoiding damages.
6. During manufacturing process, AN401 series of instruments are submitted to several intermediate
tests and to a final test including performance test of all functions.
Electrical, temperature and mechanical sampling tests are periodically carried out to check
conformity of manufactured items to Product specifications.
For the overmentioned it is thereby certified that the delivered Product is
completely operating.

For longer connections, between transducer and instrument, verify that at
the transducer’s end You can measure a power supply voltage of 18 Vdc minimum.
To calibrate an AN401plus, connected with a PCX_ss magnetostrictive transducer, follow the
general procedures described in the “AN401plus quick start manual” or in chapter 5 of this manual.
Calibration or measurement displaying is as for load cells, pressure transducers or other standard
transducers.

In order to light-on the LED emitters, internal to the opto-couplers, a voltage ranging from +12
to +28 Vdc must be supplied to each input.

Release time: from 18 µS to 10 mSec
2.12 Earth connection (CE norms)
In order to obtain the maximum immunity to electrical disturbs, following are some
recommendations:
Power supply common must be connected to earth.
If AN401 plus is powered by a power supply separated from the rest of the machine,
connect the “EARTH” screw terminal to the nearest earth connection (avoid earth loops
or earth connections disturbed by high power devices).
When connecting signal lines from AN401 plus (analogue outputs, RS232 serial lines,
etc) please remember that they are referred to earth, in order to avoid the creation of
earth loops
Best condition is obtained when all commons (signal and power supply) are connected
to earth at the same point (star connection).
Avoid wiring any input/output cable, directed to AN 401, with high power cables.
If the application is free from electrical disturbs, Earth connection may be avoided.

2.13 Connection of (0) RS-232(DB-9) serial port
Communication serial port used, for its flexibility, for configuration and for reading of measurements in an ambient not
to noisy, from the electrical point of view (induced and radiated disturbs), and with a serial connection cable not longer
than 3 meters (baud rate can be lowered, in order to optimize serial connection for longer connection lines).

2.14.2 RS485 and RS422 line terminator resistor
MULTI DROP connections, like RS485 and RS422, require having a resistance applied at both ends of the communication line
(if not yet present inside the connected devices); one is to be placed in parallel to the last AN401plus and one on the PLC or
computer on the other end.
AN401plus has no internal resistance for RS485 or RS422 but It can be applied under customer’s request.
This resistor has to be 120 Ohm ¼ Watt.
This resistance is to be applied solely on the last AN401plus of the serial net, in order not to lower, too much, the overall line
impedance (fig.11).
3Instrument setup
3.1 How to set parameters
This chapter describes the sequence to be used to set AN401plus, as working parameters and It is valid for
all of Its different menus. All different operational modes share the same sequence to set the desired
values or parameters, or levels.

7.1 Peak function
The peak function stores and displays the maximum value reached by transducer’s signal when the KEY4 rear contact is
activated (see table 1)
Key 4 rear contact has to be kept closed as long as peak value is to be displayed (see chapter 2.10).
When this function is active, the leftmost LED dot under the minus sign is powered on.
The stored peak value can be zeroed by:
Pressing C (ESC) push button on AN401plus front panel;
Closing KEY1 terminal on rear terminal panel (see chapter 2.10).
7.2 Hold
Hold function freezes the measurement actually shown on the display, until it is disabled.
All function measurements are freezed and it is activated by closing KEY 2 contact (see chapter 2.10).
To de-activate this function open the contact
7.3 Protection
AN401plus has a protection system that prevents not authorized personnel to tamper with the instrument settings, nor
with programming menus.
To activate protection, connect KEY3 as for chapter 2.10.
When protection is enabled it is not possible to access to start-up programming menus.
In order to apply authorized changes to the instrument, remove the connection on KEY3.
Protection may be applied solely if an O5 I/O card is installed on slot C

8DSENET serial protocol
NOTE: for protocol compactness it was decided to use only one character to address an instrument.
After the first ten numbers, address numbering continues with alphabet letters, thus A means 10, B means 11 and so on
until Z that means 35.
8.1 “R” Command
Command “R” allows to request, from a remote computer, the measure acquired by AN401plus within the active
operating mode. The command argument defines which measures is requested to the instrument and is independent
from the actual measurement function.
Argument of the R command is an ASCII character and may assume the following values:
Command format
@
ID
R
Index ( ind )
CR
Where: ID = address of the connected AN401plus (in case only one AN401 is connected, by sending “?” the instrument
will always reply). The identifier shall be a character in the set 0-9 or A-Z; ID can also be the character “?” if
a message is to be sent to an instrument the identifier of which is unknown.
R= read measure command.
Index = 1 digits numeric index indicating to AN401plus which measure is requested; see “Ind” column.
Note: RO means that the parameter is Read Only and cannot be modified by user.
CR = “Carriage Return” must close every message sent to the instrument and is represented by an ASCII
character.

Yyyyyyyy = measured value: 8 digits.

Preliminary manual AN 401 Plus V2 r12 25/10/12
-19 / 20-
8.2 Timestamp “r ”
To obtain, from AN401plus, measured value with timestamp reference send command “r”.
Timestamp is obtained from an incremental counter related to the measure performed by AN401plus and its value is
ranging from 0 to 65535; when maximum is reached It restarts from zero.
Working of “r” command is like “R” command (same command structure).
Example:
To request measured A/D converter value, send the following string: @?r0CR.
Reply to command “r”: xxRyyyyyyyyzzzzz
Where:
xx = sent command index ( Ind ): 2 digits.
R= reply to command “R”: 1 digit.
Yyyyyyyy = measured value: 8 digits.

9Sales conditions (for all DS Europe by S2Tech products)
9.1 Warranty
