1. Introduction.
This edition of the manual is intended for buyers of a SAMON Onion Loader.
It contains information for the use and maintenance of this machine.
When this guide was compiled the utmost care was taken to ensure that the illustrations and technical data are
correct and current for this manual.
Ellens Landbouwtechniek BV recommends that users read this manual carefully before using the machine and
observe the manual's instructions, directions and comments.
References to the left or right side of the machine are determined on the basis of the direction in which the
machine is driven.
Ellens Landbouwtechniek BV reserves the right to amend the contents of this manual without notice.
This machine was designed in accordance with the provisions of the Machinery Directive 89/392/EEC +
amendments.

2. Warranty and liability
2.1 Warranty
SAMON agricultural machinery is covered by a 1-season warranty.
The SAMON Onion Loader is designed and intended for use to load onions.*
Use of the SAMON Onion Loader for purposes other than for which it is intended is regarded as improper use.
* Always check with your Samon dealer before using the machine for other types of tops and crops.
This warranty is issued for construction defects in the machine that occur during normal use.
Parts which are subject to wear are not covered by this warranty, namely:
Chain wheels, chains, tensioning wheels, guide wheels,
Sieve belts,
Bearings,
Shares,
other parts subject to wear.
The Warranty on hydraulic components, PTO shafts and gearboxes covers solely construction defects of the
components that result in their failure as assessed by the manufacturer.
This warranty lapses in the event of:
Structural modifications and changes to the machine without permission from Ellens
Landbouwtechniek BV.
Installation and use of components on or attached to the SAMON Onion Loader that are detrimental
to the rigidity of the structure.
Failure of components due to the non-observance of maintenance intervals.
Changing or ignoring the specified settings and adjustments that could result in damage.
Our dealers and manufacturer's service points will be pleased to provide you information and assistance.
2.2 Liability
Ellens Landbouwtechniek BV is not liable for damage to SAMON agricultural machinery, tractors, third-party
machines, injury to persons or animals or damage to products caused by:
improper use.
failure to observe the instructions and directions stated in the manual.

The SAMON Onion Loader may be operated, serviced and maintained solely by persons who are familiar
with the machine and with the necessary safety procedures.

3. Safety and the Environment
3.1 General safety
NOTE!!!
Make sure that all persons who work with and/or service the SAMON Onion Loader have read this manual
and take the necessary precautions to protect their safety and the safety of others when they work with
the SAMON Onion Loader.
Always bear the following points in mind when working with or on the SAMON Onion Loader.
The SAMON Onion Loader may be operated, serviced and maintained solely by persons who are
familiar with the machine and with the necessary safety procedures.
Always switch off the tractor's engine and remove the key from the ignition before carrying out
inspections of or maintenance on the SAMON Onion Loader.
The SAMON Onion Loader contains moving sieve and conveyor belts that can trap body parts.
For this reason never come close to a SAMON Onion Loader while it is in operation.
Always wait until the sieve and conveyor belts have stopped moving before approaching the machine.
Bear in mind that the sieve and conveyor belts will continue to turn for a while after the SAMON
Onion Loader has been switched off.
A hedgehog belt mounted at the back of the SAMON Onion Loader unloads foreign matter. Never
come close to the hedgehog belt while it is working.
Keep clear of the SAMON Onion Loader when it is in operation.
If the machine hits an object then switch off the SAMON Onion Loader and inspect the machine for
damage before switching it on again.
The SAMON Onion Loader contains a number of parts which are fitted with locking pins and safety
cords and/or chains. These must always be fitted to the machine.
Damaged and broken safeguards and locking devices must be replaced immediately.
Protective covers, sleeves and rubber flaps may never be damaged. Always replace them when they
are dented or cracked.
Always use original SAMON parts: these are designed specifically for the Onion Loader.
3.2 Environment
Protect the environment by always cleaning and servicing the SAMON Onion Loader on a hard, impermeable
floor.
NOTE!!!
Dispose of spent lubricant in an environmentally-friendly manner. We recommend that you collect spent
oil in a closed container and deliver the oil to a recycling centre or a collection point. Never dispose of
spent oil by allowing it to run off into a ditch, drain, sewer or the soil.

4. Inspections before and after use
WARNING!!!
Make sure that the tractor's engine has been switched off and the key has been removed from the ignition
before you carry out inspections of or maintenance on the SAMON Onion Loader.
4.1 Inspections before use
Inspect the tow-ring for damage.
Inspect the lighting for damage.
Inspect the gearbox for leaks.
Inspect the complete hydraulic system for leaks.
Inspect the electronics for damage.
Inspect the tyres for damage and check the tyre pressure (2.5 bar).
Check the length of the PTO shaft (see 4.2)
Inspect the protective cover of the PTO shaft for cracks.
Check that the safety chains of the PTO shaft are fitted.
Check that the locking clips and safety cords are in place.
Inspect all protective covers for damage.
Inspect the sieve, hedgehog and conveyor belts for damage and wear.
Inspect the drive and guide wheels for wear.
Check that the wheel's locking bolts are tight.
4.2 Shortening the PTO shaft.
When the inspection before use reveals that the PTO shaft is too long then it can be shortened as follows:
Connect the machine to the tractor.
Position the PTO shafts so that they are close as possible
to each other.
Measure distance "A" of the PTO shafts.
Measure distance "B" of the PTO shafts
(See the illustration for the measuring points)
Subtract length "A” from length "B"
Shorten the PTO shaft by the result (see example)
Example of a calculation:
A=400 mm
B=450 mm
B(450) - A(400) = 50 + 10
To be shortened by 60 mm

4.3 Inspection during use
Check that the intake is at the right depth: it should enter the soil to a depth of about 1 cm.
Check to make sure that the onions are not damaged.
Check the adjustment of the hedgehog belt.
Check the wheeltrack
Check that the catch plates are adjusted correctly.
WARNING!!!
The speed at which wearing parts wear depends on the type of soil. For this reason the wearing parts need
to be inspected regularly to avoid damage to the SAMON Onion Loader.

5. Operation
5.1 Connecting the SAMON Onion Loader
Use the hand-operated pump to adjust the tow-ring to the correct
height.
Pumping the lever: raises the support leg.
Turning the knob: lowers the support leg.
Connect the machine to the tractor.
Make sure that the tow-ring is connected properly and is secured
correctly.
Connect the hydraulic hoses using the quick-fit couplings. NOTE! The
male quick-fit coupling on the machine is the pressure side.
Connect the plugs for the lighting and electronic controls.
Fit the PTO shaft (540 PTO).
Fasten the PTO shaft protective cover safety chains.
Put the remote control in the tractor.
WARNING!!!
Always use a pressure-free return.
5.2 Adjusting the track
The track can be adjusted with the rear right wheel.
Adjusting the track:
Lift the machine until the wheel is free
from the ground.
Loosen the locking bolts.
Slide the wheel to obtain the required
track.
Tighten all locking bolts.
WARNING!!!
Make sure that the wheel is always fully retracted before transporting the machine on public roads.

5.4 Intake
5.4.1 Operating intake
The intake operated as follows:
Lower Intake:
Move joystick
downwards: which
remains in this position.
Always keep the joystick
in the "down" position
when loading onions.
Raise Intake:
Move the joystick
upwards until intake
stops.
5.4.2 Adjusting the height of the support wheels
The depth of the intake is set by adjusting the height of the support wheels.
The sieve belt should enter the soil to a depth of about 1 cm while onions are being loaded.
The correct depth can vary with the type of soil.
Adjusting the support wheels:
Loosen the locking bolts (A).
Turn the spindles on the top of
the support wheels until they
are in the required position.
Tighten the locking bolts (A).

5.5 Operating the sieve belt
5.5.1 Speed of the sieve belt
The sieve belt's drive is connected to the tractor's PTO shaft.
The speed of the sieve belt is adjusted by adjusting the speed of the tractor's engine.
NOTE!!!
Use a PTO shaft turning at 540 RPM for the SAMON Onion Loader.
5.5.2 Adjusting the web shakers
The sieve belt is equipped with web shakers to
increase the sieving efficiency.
The intensity is adjusted by moving the lever on the
side of the frame up or down.
5.6 Operating the conveyor belt
The SAMON Onion Loader is equipped with a conveyor belt to load the onions into a tipper.
The electronic remote control is used to operate the conveyor belt. The drive has an infinitely-variable speed
controller. The belt can be folded in for transport.
5.6.1 Folding the conveyor belt in and out
WARNING!!!
Never load onions with the conveyor belt folded in.
Never transport a SAMON Onion Loader on the public roads with the conveyor belt folded out.
The conveyor belt is folded out as follows.
1.
Set the remote control's selection
switch to operation of the
conveyor belt.
2.
Move the joystick to the left to
fold out the lower section of the
conveyor belt.

3.
Move the joystick upwards to fold
out the upper section of the
conveyor belt.
The conveyor belt is folded in as follows.
1.
Set the remote control's selection
switch to operation of the
conveyor belt.
2.
Move the joystick downwards to
fold in the upper section of the
conveyor belt.
3.
Move the joystick to the right to
fold in the lower section of the
conveyor belt.
5.6.2 Operating the conveyor belt
WARNING!!!
Make sure that the conveyor belt is folded out completely before starting the conveyor belt.
Starting the conveyor belt while it is still folded in will damage the SAMON Onion Loader.
Set the remote control's selection
switch to operation of the
conveyor belt to start the
conveyor belt.

5.6.3 Adjusting the speed of the conveyor belt
The speed of the conveyor belt is varied by turning
the infinitely-variable power-control knob on the
inner side of the conveyor belt.
Turn the knob clockwise or anticlockwise to adjust
the speed of the belt.
5.7 Operating and adjusting the hedgehog belt and reversing roller
The SAMON Onion Loader has a hedgehog belt at the back of the machine.
This hedgehog belt discharges foreign matter that cannot be separated by the sieve belt.
The angle of the belt can be adjusted as required for the size of the product.
5.7.1 Operating the hedgehog belt

Set the remote control's selection
switch to operation of the
hedgehog belt.
2.
Move the joystick upwards to
increase the angle of the
hedgehog belt.
3.
Move the joystick downwards to
decrease the angle of the
hedgehog belt.

5.7.2 Speed of the hedgehog belt and revering roller
The speed of the hedgehog belt and reversing roller
is varied by turning the infinitely-variable power-
control knob on the inner side of the hedgehog belt's
frame.
Turn the knob clockwise or anticlockwise to adjust
the speed of the belt.
5.7.3 Adjusting the height of the reversing roller.
The reversing roller prevents the discharge of product via the hedgehog belt.
The reversing roller is adjustable to ensure that the SAMON Onion Loader can be used with products of
different dimensions.
The height of the reversing roller is adjusted by
loosening the bolts fastening the bearings and
motor catch plate and then sliding the reversing
roller to the required height.
5.8 Steering
The SAMON Onion Loader is steered with drawbar steering.
The drawbar steering ensures that the SAMON Onion Loader's wheels follow the tractor's track precisely.
The drawbar steering is operated using the remote control.
Steer to the left:
Move the 'steering' joystick
to the left.
Steer to the right:
Move the 'steering' joystick
to the right.

6. Maintenance
WARNING!!!
Make sure that the tractor's engine has been switched off and the key has been removed from the ignition
before you carry out maintenance on the SAMON Onion Loader.
6.1 Lubrication schedule
The SAMON Onion Loader needs to be lubricated regularly to achieve optimum performance.
Lubrication schedule for the SAMON Onion Loader

6.2 Level and temperature of the hydraulic oil
A sight-glass and thermometer are mounted on the
side of the hydraulic oil tank.
When no oil is visible in the sight glass then top up
the hydraulic oil.
The temperature of the hydraulic oil when the
machine is in operation should be about 65 °C.
This temperature is in part determined by the
ambient temperature.
The hydraulic tank is filled with “H46” hydraulic oil
when the machine leaves the factory.
NOTE!!!
The hydraulic oil must be replaced every 2 years.
6.3 Replacing the gearbox oil
The gearbox is filled with SAE 90 gearbox oil when the machine leaves the factory.
Remove the venting nipple (A) on the top of the
gearbox and the plug (B) on the bottom of the
gearbox.
Drain the gearbox and collect the oil in a container:
make sure that the oil is processed in an
environmentally-responsible manner.
Fit the plug (B) in the bottom of the gearbox.
Fill the gearbox with 0.35 litres of SAE 90 gearbox oil.
Fit the venting nipple (A).
NOTE!!!
The gearbox oil must be replaced every 2 years.

6.4 Tensioning the conveyor belt
If the inspection reveals that the conveyor belt needs to be tensioned then the belt can be tensioned as
follows.
The adjustment bolts of the conveyor belt are
located on each side of the belt.
Loosen the locking nut (A).
Adjust the tension by turning the adjustment bolt
(B).
Tighten the locking nut (A) securely.
6.5 Adjusting the height of the drawbar
The height of the drawbar needs to be adjusted
correctly relative to the tractor if the SAMON Onion
Loader is to be steered optimally.
Loosen the locking nut (A).
Adjust the height of the drawbar using adjusting nut
(B).
Tighten the locking nut (A) securely.
6.6 Adjusting the tow-ring
When the height of the drawbar has been adjusted
then the tow-ring will also need to be adjusted to
make sure than it is precisely horizontal relative to
the tractor.
Loosen locking nuts (A) and (B) and adjust the angle
of the tow-ring.
Tighten the locking nuts securely.

7. Transport and storage.
7.1 Transport on a vehicle
Check the height and width of the SAMON Onion Loader and mark any projecting parts, where
applicable.
Make sure that the machine is fastened securely with strong rope or tensioning belts before the
transport.
Block the wheels with wheel blocks.
7.2 Transport behind a tractor
Observe the prevailing traffic regulations when you transport the SAMON Onion Loader behind a
tractor on the public roads.
Make sure that the conveyor belt has been folded in before you begin to transport the SAMON Onion
Loader.
Make sure that the intake has been folded in before you begin to transport the SAMON Onion Loader.
Never switch on the sieve, hedgehog or conveyor belts while transporting the SAMON Onion Loader.
When you are steering the tractor bear in mind that the tail of the SAMON Onion Loader swings out in
bends.
The driver's view is obstructed when the tractor is towing the SAMON Onion Loader.
7.3 Storage
Clean the machine thoroughly.
NOTE!!!
When using a high pressure spray make sure that you do not direct the spray on or in bearings and any
electronics, where relevant.
Check the tyre pressure and inspect the tyres for damage (2,5 bar).
Check all wearing parts and replace any worn parts in good time.
Check all bearings and replace when the play is excessive.
Inspect the sieve, hedgehog and conveyor belts for damage and breakage.
Inspect all guide and vibratory rollers.
Inspect the feed roller for damage and breakage.
Inspect the complete hydraulic system for damage and leaks.
Inspect the complete electronic system for damage.
Lubricate the entire machine (see the Lubrication Section for more details).
Check the oil level in de gearbox and top up if necessary.
Check the oil level of the hydraulic system and top up if necessary.
Inspect all protective covers and rubbers.
Inspect the universal joints and the sliding parts of the PTO shaft for wear.
Lubricate the universal joints and the sliding parts of the PTO shaft.
Inspect the protective cover of the PTO shaft for cracks.
Check the safety chains of the PTO shaft.
Inspect the safety cords and locking clips for damage and cracks.
Store the machine when it is dry.
