Your Device at a Glance
The following illustration outlines your device’s primary external features and buttons.
Set Up Your Device
Charge the battery to begin setting up your device.
1. Plug the wide end of the USB cable into the Charger/Accessory Jack on the bottom of
your device.

Warning! While the device is charging, if the touchscreen does not function due to an
unstable power supply, unplug the USB power adapter from the power outlet or
unplug the USB cable from the device.
2. Plug the USB end of the USB cable into the Charging Head, and then plug the Charging
Head into an electrical outlet to charge your battery. Fully charging a battery may take
up to three hours.
Note: Your device’s battery should have enough charge for the device to turn on and find a
signal, and set up the device. You should fully charge the battery as soon as possible.
3. Press and hold the Power/Lock button to turn the device on.

If your device is activated, it will turn on, search for Sprint service, and begin the
setup application.
If your device is not yet activated, see Activate Your Device for more information.
Activate Your Device
Depending on your account or how and where you purchased your device, it may be ready to
use or you may need to activate it on your Sprint account.
●If you purchased your device at a Sprint Store, it is probably activated and ready to use.
●If you received your device in the mail and it is for a new Sprint account or a new line of
service, it is designed to activate automatically.
When you turn the device on for the first time, you should see a Hands Free
Activation screen, which may be followed by a PRL Update screen and a Firmware
Update screen. Follow the onscreen instructions to continue.
●If you received your device in the mail and you are activating a new device for an
existing number on your account (you’re swapping devices), you can activate on your
computer online or directly on your device.
Activate on your computer: Go to sprint.com/activate and complete the online
instructions to activate your device.
Activate on your device:
• Turn on your new device. (Make sure the old one is turned off.) Your device will
automatically attempt Hands-Free Activation.
• Tap Activate to override auto-activation and start the manual activation wizard.

• Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the activation process.
●To confirm activation, launch Internet. If your device is still not activated or you do not
have access to the Internet, contact Sprint Customer Service at 1-888-211-4727 for
assistance.
Tip: Do not press the Power/Lock button while the device is being activated. Pressing the
Power/Lock button cancels the activation process.
Note: If you are having any difficulty with activation, contact Sprint Customer Service by calling
1-888-211-4727 from any other device.
Complete the Setup Application
The Setup application helps you set up certain features and preferences on your device. Once
your device has been turned on and activated, you will see a Welcome message. You can then
complete the Setup application.
Note: You may be able to complete the setup application before your device has been
activated on your Sprint account.
1. Once your device is activated, you will see the Welcome screen. Choose a language,
and then tap Start to get started.
2. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete each section. For each topic, you will have
an option to skip it and continue to the next screen.
Samsung account: Your Samsung account provides access to a variety of services.
• Create new account - Follow the instructions to create a new Samsung account.
• Sign in - Enter your credentials to sign in to your current Samsung account.
Make it Google - Complete the steps to sign in to your current Google account, or
tap Get an account to sign up for a new Google account right from your device.
• Sign in - Enter your Gmail address and password and tap Sign in to set up your
current Google account on this device. Follow the instructions to set up options,
including enable purchases, Backup and restore options, Google location
services, and information to personalize some apps. Tap Next to continue after
each step.
• Get an account - Follow the instructions to sign up for a new Google account.
There will be screens to enter your first and last names, create an email address
(Gmail), create a password, enter recovery information (including a backup email
address and a recovery question in case you forget your Google account sign-in
information), an option to join Google+, and an option to enable purchases from
the Google Play Store app. Tap Next between each screen.

• Not now - Skip this step. You can always set up a Google account on your
device later, in Settings.
3. When setup is complete, tap Finish. Follow the onscreen instructions to learn about
basic touch/tap navigation.
Note: As you use your device, you may see a notice to turn on Sprint Connections Optimizer,
to allow your device to automatically connect to the best available network, including Wi-
Fi networks. Follow the prompts on the notice to turn on Sprint Connections Optimizer,
or turn it on or off at any time by tapping Home > Apps >Settings >More settings >
Mobile networks >Connection optimizer.

Sprint Account Passwords
As a Sprint customer, you enjoy unlimited access to your personal account information and data
services account. To ensure that no one else has access to your information, you will need to
create passwords to protect your privacy.
Account User Name and Password
If you are the account owner, you will create an account user name and password when you
sign on to sprint.com. (Click Sign in/Register and then click Sign up now! to get started.) If
you are not the account owner (if someone else receives the bill for your Sprint service), you
can get a sub-account password at sprint.com.
Data Services Password
With your Sprint device, you may elect to set up an optional data services password to control
access and authorize Premium Service purchases.
For more information, or to change your passwords, sign on to sprint.com or call Sprint
Customer Service at 1-888-211-4727.

●Power/Lock Button lets you turn the device on or off, turn the screen on or off, enable
or disable data network mode or airplane mode, or restart the device.
●Volume Button allows you to adjust volume.
●Memory Card Slot allows you to install an optional microSD card (not included), for
additional storage.
●Light Sensor controls screen brightness automatically and when taking photos with the
Front-facing Camera.
●Self Camera Lens allows you to take photos or video recordings while looking at the
screen, using the Self-portrait/Self-recording options of the Camera.
●Speakers are used for music or video playback, notification tones, and for other sounds.
●Microphone captures audio.
●Touchscreen allows you to control your device with your finger, or with S Pen

●IF LED emits infrared signals used for controlling external devices. For more information,

●Camera Lens lets you take pictures and videos.
●Charger/Accessory Port allows you to connect the device charger/USB cable
(included).
●S Pen provides a new way to interact with your device, by writing inputs, or using the
special S Pen features.
Turn Your Device On and Off
The instructions below explain how to turn your device on and off. Your screen remains blank
while your device is off (unless the battery is charging).
Turn Your Device On
►Press and hold .
Turn Your Device Off
►Press and hold until the Device options menu displays, and then tap Power
off >OK.
Turn Your Screen On and Off
Your device allows you to quickly turn the screen off when not in use and to turn it back on and
unlock it when you need it.
Turn the Screen Off When Not in Use
►To quickly turn the screen off, press . Pressing again will turn on
your device screen and show the lock screen.
To save battery power, the device automatically turns off the screen after a certain period of
time when you leave it idle. Your device will still be able to receive email, sync with your
accounts, and perform other functions while the screen is off.
Note: For information on how to adjust the time before the screen turns off, see Screen
Timeout.
Turn the Screen On and Unlock It
1. To turn the screen on, press .
Swipe the screen in any direction to unlock the screen. If you have set up a screen
lock, you will be prompted to draw the pattern or enter the password or PIN. See
Screen lock.
