Introduction
What is the sanakey?
The sanakey is a transcutaneous electro stimulator. It is
intended for delivering non-invasive therapy to the body’s
physiological systems via skin areas in order to provide pain
relief and functional restoration, as well as ‘Key-Phoresis’, a
modified form of iontophoresis.
The device generates low and medium frequency bipolar
electric pulses. The shape of the bipolar electric pulses
dynamically varies with the changing electrophysiological
characteristics of the skin (capacitance and resistance). The
device does not utilise a conductive media between the
electrodes and the individual’s skin.
Intended use
The sanakey is a non-invasive, electrotherapeutic, hand-held
device that can be used to alleviate acute and chronic pain
and to facilitate functional restoration and improvement.

Indications for Use
The sanakey intended use is for:
• Acute and chronic pain.
• Increased blood circulation.
• Passive muscle stimulation.
• Improvement and recovery of function.
Contraindications
•On-demand-type cardiac pacemaker. or other
electrically powered implant.
•Electrode placement over malignant tumours.
•Use over open wounds.
•Patients prone to seizures.
•Alcohol intoxication.
•Pregnancy.
Cautions
The sanakey electrodes should not make contact with wet
skin. Natural body fluids, including sweat, are acceptable.
Treatment with the sanakey should not normally exceed 30
minutes in any specific area of the body and there should be,
as a general rule, a minimum of 2 hours between treatment
sessions, to avoid isolated cases of skin irritation. In most
cases, application of the Sanakey is carried out by moving the
device on the skin.
In some cases increased pain, muscle aches and other
reactions may be associated with application of the sanakey.
These reactions will usually return to normal after a short
time.If symptoms persists, discontinue use of the sanakey and
consult your health professional.!

Charging
Make sure your sanakey is charged before use. Your sanakey
shows you a battery-charge state indicator during operation
(here shown on the display).
When the battery no longer has enough charge to continue
operation, the device will sound a warning tone. If the battery
charge is too low, the device will no longer operate. Please
connect it to a charger.
To charge your sanakey, turn the device off and plug the
charger into an appropriate socket and connect it to the
sanakey. Please note: operation during the charging phase is
not possible. During charging, the screen shown below is
displayed.
After a short time the display whilst in charging mode turns off
to save energy and to speed up the charging process. To get
information about the charge state, press the Home button to
wake up the display.

sanakey Therapy Programs
Your sanakey you has a choice of different therapy programs
at your disposal. The sanakey provides therapy programs for
a broad range of painful complaints, both acute and chronic.
The various therapy programs are named according to the
effect that is to be achieved.
To access different therapy modes press the ‘cog’ icon to
open a submenu. Then the therapy
program menu will appear.
Now use the arrow icons to highlight the therapy program for
selection selection (it will be highlighted as it moves to the

sanakey Therapy Programs
Basic
• A good program to begin with when first using the
sanakey.
• The good setting to search for keypoints (explained
later).
Sedation
• A high frequency program, to quickly sedate pain.
• Ideal for inflammation and inflammatory pain, oedema
and lymphatic issues.
Activation
• Stimulation program, good for chronic pain.
• Pain related to scars / adhesions.
Relaxation
• Program ideally suited to musculoskeletal pain.
• Muscle aches and pains.
• Useful when no change with other programs.
Harmonisation
• Useful when no change with other programs.
• Improves the flow of energy in the body and ensures
balance.
• Useful for vegetative balance of body, great at the end
of your treatment session.!

Energy
The energy level refers to the strength of output impulse from
the device and is indicated on the main screen of the device.
Use the Plus or Minus button to increase or decrease the
energy level, indicated by the number in the middle. The
energy level has a range of 1-99.
The perception of the impulse output level from the device will
vary greatly from person to person. This means that impulse
energy levels should be selected individually for each
treatment session.
If the sensation level (buzzing or tingling sensation) on the
skin is high it will usually be a painful experience. This is not
helpful to the therapy process. The impulse energy level
should generally be set at a pleasant level. A high impulse
energy level is usually used for acute pain and emergency
situations where intense pain must be rapidly reduced.

!13

Below are listed some guidelines regarding impulse energy
levels;
• In cases where the localisation of the pain is clear
(especially when the patient can point to the pain), it
may be necessary to increase the impulse energy level
to the most tolerable level.
• To rapidly reduce pain, a high impulse energy level can
be used with continuous movement of the device over
the area where therapy is being applied.
• In cases of obscure or general pain symptoms
prevailing over local pain symptoms use a comfortable
impulse energy level.
• For young children or the elderly, it is advisable to begin
therapy using the minimum impulse energy level and
then gradually increase it to a pleasant sensation.

Using Your sanakey
Three Step Protocol
Every sanakey treatment follows a 3 step protocol.

!15
SCAN
scan for keypoints
keypoints are our ‘doorway’ to the body’s
regulative/repair system, areas on the skin
where;
1. the sanakey electrode drags (‘sticks to
the skin’)
2. the sanakey impulse feels stronger
3. the sound of the sanakey gets quieter
4. the colour of the skin in the area being
treated has a pronounced change.
TREAT
ASSESS
target keypoints
Use the sanakey to clear keypoints
(explained next section).
assess your treatment
Have you achieved the desired pain relief?
If not, change the program and repeat the
treatment.

If you have an area or point of pain, that is, you can ‘point to it’
or clearly indicate its location – begin working with the
sanakey in that area. The position of this pain does not
depend on a diagnosis – it is simply where the you feel the
pain ‘here and now’.
Turn your sanakey ON by
holding down the Home
button for 2 seconds then
release. Place the device
electrode firmly on the skin
on or near the area of pain,
and set the impulse energy
level to a comfortable
tingling sensation.
You can change the impulse
energy level at any time
during therapy.
SCAN for keypoints by
sliding the device firmly over
the area of pain. Keypoints
will show themselves as
stickiness, where the
sanakey electrode drags or
‘sticks to the skin’, or where
the sanakey impulse feels
stronger, or where the sound
of the sanakey as it is being
moved across the skin
changes, or where the colour
of the skin in the area being
treated has a pronounced
change (usually reddens).

!16
SCAN

Treat keypoints by sliding
the by sliding the device in
four directions over the
painful area, looking for the
most resistant direction.
Continue sliding the device
in this direction until the
resistance (or one of the
other keypoint indicators)
changes.
Assess your treatment by
by scanning for keypoints
again.
If the keypoints have been
cleared and pain relief
effected: your treatment is
complete!
If more keypoints are found,
change the therapy program
of the sanakey and begin
again, treating until keypoints
have been cleared.

Neck Pain Therapy
Neck pain!or a stiff neck are extremely common and can
affect your life in so many different ways. Whether it be sharp
neck pain, dull muscular aches, headache, or an inability to
fully move your head, a sore neck can be very frustrating and
yet relief is simple and fast in the majority of cases with your
sanakey.
Common symptoms with neck pain may include:
•Chronic headache.
•Pain can be perceived locally, or may radiate to the
head, shoulder, or arm.
•Pain can be worse when you are in certain positions,
and can interfere with your sleep.
•Other symptoms may be muscular stiffness and/spasm.
•Your treatment is guided by the area of pain and
associated symptoms of pain and functional
(movement) limitation ‘here and now’.
•Neck pain is most often chronic and frequency of
treatment can be daily until the complaint improves.
Which Program?
•Neck pain is recent - last 72 hours. Use Sedation and/or
Relaxation program.
•Neck pain has been present up to 2 weeks. Use Basic
and/or Relaxation program.
