The relay contains devices sensitive to Electrostatic Discharge
(ESD). When working on the relay with the front panel removed,
work surfaces and personnel must be properly grounded or
equipment damage may result.

CAUTION
There is danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly
replaced. Replace only with Ray-O-Vac®no. BR2335 or
equivalent recommended by manufacturer. Dispose of used
batteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

CAUTION
The continuous rating of the current inputs is 3 • Inom. If any
currents in this test will exceed this rating, reduce the TAPn
values as needed, to prevent possible damage to the input
circuits.

CAUTION
The continuous rating of the current inputs is 3 • Inom. For this
test, you may want to choose low values of U87P and TAPn, in
order to limit the required test current to a safe value.

CAUTION
This device is shipped with default passwords. Default
passwords should be changed to private passwords at
installation. Failure to change each default password to a
private password may allow unauthorized access. SEL shall not
be responsible for any damage resulting from unauthorized
access.

Manual Overview
The SEL-387 Relay Instruction Manual describes common aspects of the
application and use of this relay. It includes the necessary information to
install, set, test, and operate the relay and more detailed information about
settings and commands.
If you are unfamiliar with this relay, we suggest that you read the following
sections in the outlined order.
Section 1: Introduction and Specifications.Provides an introduction, relay
functional overview, and specifications.
Section 3: Differential, Restricted Earth Fault, Thermal, and Overcurrent
Elements.Describes the protection elements and their associated settings.
Section 4: Control Logic.Explains inputs, the Relay Word, outputs, and
logic. Use this section to understand the settings necessary for
implementing your logic.
Section 6: Setting the Relay.Describes methods for setting the device,
settings not explained in Section 3 or Section 4, and default settings.
Provides Settings Sheets with examples.
Section 7: Serial Port Communications and Commands.Explains the
serial port commands necessary for setting the relay for such functions
as control, obtaining target information, and obtaining metering
information.

Appendix A: Firmware and Manual Versions.Lists the present and
previous versions of relay firmware and explains differences. Provides
a record of changes to the manual since the initial release.

Describes the procedure to update the firmware stored in flash
memory.
