1. SAFETY
1.1. WHAT IS CARBON MONOXIDE?
1.1.1. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an insidious poison that is released when fuels are burnt. It is a colourless, odourless, tasteless gas and
thereforeverydiculttodetectwiththehumansenses.COkillshundredsofpeopleeachyearandinjuresmanymore.Itbinds
tohaemoglobininthebloodandreducestheamountofoxygenbeingcirculatedinthebody.InhighconcentrationsCOcan
killinminutes.COisproducedbytheincompletecombustionoffuelssuchaswood,charcoal,coal,heatingoil,paran,
petrol, natural gas, propane, butane etc.
1.1.2. ExamplesofCOsources:
Runningcarengineinagarage,oilandgasfurnaces,woodstoves,barbecues,cloggedchimneys,woodandgasreplaces,heating
boiler,gasappliances,portablegenerators,gasorkeroseneheaters.
1.2. SYMPTOMS OF CO POISONING
ThefollowingsymptomsmayberelatedtoCOpoisoning:
35ppm Themaximumallowableconcentrationforcontinuousexposureforhealthyadultsinany8hourperiod.
200ppm Slightheadaches,fatigue,dizziness,nauseaafter2-3hours.
400ppm Frontalheadacheswithin1-2hours,lifethreateningafter3hours.
800ppm Dizziness,nauseaandconvulsionswithin45minutes,unconsciousnesswithin2hours,deathwithin3hours.
1600ppmHeadache,dizzinessandnauseawithin20minutes,deathwithin1hour.
6400ppmHeadache,dizzinessandnauseawithin1-2minutes.
1.3. InstallingaCOalarmisonlytherststeptowardssaferlivingconditions.Makesurethatyouandtheothermembersofyour
householdarefamiliarwiththecauseandeectsofcarbonmonoxidepoisoningandhowtooperatetheCOalarm.
9 TestyourCOalarmonceamonth.
9 Replacelowbatteriesimmediately.
9 Onlypurchaseapprovedcombustiondevices.
9 Installcombustiondevicesinthecorrectwayandstrictlyfollowtheinstructionsofthemanufacturer.
9 Haveanyinstallationscarriedoutbyaprofessional.
9 Haveyourinstallationscheckedbyaqualifiedinstalleronaregularbasis.
9 Haveyourchimneyandanydrainagecleanedeveryyear.
9 Regularlycheckallcombustiondevicesandverifyifdevicesarefreeofcorrosion.
9Never use a barbecue indoors or in garages.
9 Ensureproperventilationwhenusingafireplaceormultiburner.
9 AlwayspayattentiontothesymptomsofCarbonMonoxidepoisoning.
9 Thisalarmcanonlybeusedforresidentialapplications,itisNOTsuitableforuseonboats,invehicles,factoriesorshoppingmallsetc.
8 Avoidcontactwithorganicsolvents(includingsiliconeandotheradhesives),coatings,pharmaceutical,oilandhighconcentrationsof
gas.Thisunitcannotbeusedinenvironmentscontainingcorrosivegas,corrosivegascandamagetheunit.
8DO NOTusewherethereisstrongwindmovement.
8DO NOTblockthealarmsairinletotherwisetheunit’ssensitivitywillbeaffected.
8 Thisunitcannotbearexcessiveshockorvibration.
8 Itwilltakethisalarmalongtimetoreturntoitsinitialstateafterithasbeenusedinhighconcentrationsofgasforalongtime.

and other gases.

2. INTRODUCTION

4. LOCATING THE ALARM
ThisalarmisdesignedtodetecttoxicCOfumesthatresultfromincompletecombustion,suchasthoseemittedfromappliances,
furnaces,replacesandcarexhausts.
4.1. Ifyourdwellingisonasinglestorey,forminimumprotectionyoushouldtanalarminthebedroomsorinthehallwayofthe
sleepingareas.Placeitasneartothesleepingareasaspossibleandensurethealarmisaudiblewhenthebedrooms
are occupied.
4.2. Ifyourdwellingismultistorey,forminimumprotectionplaceatleastonealarmoneachoor.
NOTE: Formaximumprotectionanalarmshouldbettedinorneareveryroomthatcontainsafuelburningappliancesuchasanygasres,
centralheatingboilers,roomheaters,waterheaters,cookers,grillsetc.
WARNING!Thisalarmwillonlyindicatethepresenceofcarbonmonoxidegasatthesensor.CarbonMonoxidemaybepresentin
other areas.
WARNING! A Carbon Monoxide alarm does not function as a replacement for a smoke or gas detector.
5. POSITIONING THE ALARM
5.1. CarbonMonoxidehasasimilardensitytowarmairandtoensurethatthemosteectiveuseismadeofthedetector,itshouldbe
ttedatleast1.5metres(5feet)aboveoorlevelandatleast1.85metres(6feet)fromtheappliance.Seeg.1.
5.2. Areas to be avoided include the following:
•situationswherethetemperaturemayfallbelow-10°Corriseabove40°C.
•inadamporhumidarea.
•anyareawherehighlevelsofdusty,dirtyorgreasyemissionscouldcontaminateorclogthesensor.
• behind curtains or furniture.
•inthepathofairdischargedfromafurnace,airconditioningventorceilingfan.
• outside the building.
•directlyaboveasinkorcooker.
WARNING: Thiscarbonmonoxidealarmisdesignedforindooruseonly.DO NOTexposetorainormoisture.Itwillnotprotect
againsttheriskofcarbonmonoxidepoisoningwhenthebatteryhasdrained. DO NOTopenuportamperwiththealarmasthis
couldcauseamalfunction.
6. INSTALLATION
6.1. Thiscarbonmonoxidealarmispoweredbybatteryandrequiresnoadditionalwiring.Itcaneitherbeinstalledonawall,usingthe
xingsprovided,oronatabletop.
6.2. WALL MOUNTED INSTALLATION
6.2.1. Establishthemountinglocationseesection5.1.andensurethereisnoelectricalwiringorpipeworkintheareaadjacenttothe
mountingsurface.
6.2.2. Markthetwomountingholelocationsanddrillholes.
6.2.3. Screwthescrewsintothedrilledholesandkeepthescrewsoutby4mm.Hangunitonwall.
6.3. TABLE TOP INSTALLATION
6.3.1. PlacealarmonatabletopsothatuserscanseetheLEDsclearly.
7. OPERATION
7.1. INSTALL BATTERIES (REFER TO FIG.2)
7.1.1. Thealarmispoweredby3xLR6sizeAA1.5Vbatteries.
7.1.2. Undothescrewandreleasethecliptoopenthebatterycompartmentdoorontherearofthedetector.
7.1.3. Makesurethebatteriesareinsertedthecorrectwayround(seethepolaritydiagramsinthebottomofthecompartment).
7.1.4. Theredplasticindicatorhastotunderthebattery,thedoorwillnotshutifthisisnotdone.

7.2. NORMAL OPERATION
7.2.1. WhennoCarbonMonoxideispresent,thegreenLEDashesonceevery50seconds,theLCDdisplays“0PPM”andthespeaker
symbolisindicatedtoshowyouralarmisinnormalworkingcondition.Seeg.3.
7.3. HOW TO TEST THE CO ALARM
7.3.1. PresstheTESTbutton,theunitwilltriggerananalogueoutputofhighCOconcentrationthatwillbedetectedbytheMCU,thusstarting
alarmingtogetherwiththeredLEDashing,simultaneouslytheunitwilldisplaythesimulatedCOconcentrationwiththe“SPEAKER”
symbolashing,(SPEAKERsymbol)seeg.4.
NOTE: Testthisalarmwhenthe“ppm”symbolisdisplayedintheLCDafterthebatterieshavebeeninstalled.Thoughthisalarmcan
self-diagnosetheamplifyingcircuitandsensor,itisrecommendedthatyoutestyourCOalarmonceamonthtoensureitisworking
correctly.
7.4. ALARM LOCKING
7.4.1. IftheTESTbuttonispressedagainwhilsttheCOalarmissounding,
thealarmwillmoveintoLOCKINGstatusandtheredLEDandthe
greenLEDwillashevery10secondsatthesametime,the
“SPEAKER”symbolontheLCDwilldisappear.Theunitwillnot
respondtoanyactionduringthe2minuteLOCKINGstatus.IftheCO
concentrationexceeds300PPMin3minutes,theunitwillstart
alarming,seeg.5.
7.4.2. WhentheCOconcentrationgoesdowntoorbelow5PPMtheunitwill
stopalarming.

7.5. LOCKING RELEASE
7.5.1. PresstheTESTbutton,theunitwillreturntoNormalOperationstatus,seeg.3.
7.6. ALARM CONDITION
7.6.1. WhentheunitdetectsdangerouslevelsofCO,itwillemitanalarmsignalalongwithashingredLED,seeg.4.Thiswillcontinue
aslongasthereisadangerouslevelofCOconcentrationoforequalto5PPM.TheLCDwillshowtheconcentrationandSPEAKER
symbol.Thiswillindicatethatanalarmhasoccurredanditshouldbeinvestigated.
NOTE: Tostopthealarmreferto7.4.
7.7. MEMORY FUNCTION
7.7.1. Whennooneishome,theunitmaydetectCOandthealarmsound.ThealarmstopswhentheCOconditionreturnstonormal.The
highestCOconcentrationthatwaspresent,willberecordedandshownontheLCDwiththe“COgure”ickeringonceevery15
seconds,togetherwith2continuous“beep”,“beep”sounds,redLEDandthe“SPEAKER”symbolashing,seeg.6.
7.7.2. PresstheTESTbutton,the“COgure”willthenbeclearedandtheunitreturnstonormalworkingcondition,seeg.3.
7.8. LOW BATTERY SIGNAL
7.8.1. Whentheunitdetectsthebatteryvoltageislowandneedsreplacing,theredLEDwillbeepevery40secondsalongwithoneBEEP.
TheLCDwillshowtheLOWVOLTAGEsymbol,seeg.6.
7.8.2. TheredLEDwillashasusual,duringthelowbatteryperiod,andtheunitcanstillalarmasusual.
NOTE: Thenormalstandbytimeofbatteryis5yearsminimum.Ifthereisaproblemwiththebatteryorlowbatterysignalwarning
keepsactivatingforover30days,replacethebattery.
7.9. MANUAL ZERO
7.9.1. InnormaloperationwithnoCOgaspresent,whentheLCDdoesnotshow“0PPM”,youcanpresstheTESTbuttondownfor3
secondsuntilthePPMcharacterontheLCDdisappears,thenreleasetheTESTbuttonuntiltheLCDshows“0PPM”.
7.9.2. Manual Zero can only be carried out under the following two conditions:
A:TheCOconcentrationontheLCDislowerthan10PPM.
B:TherstdigitoftheLCDshows“-”.
7.10. FAULT SIGNAL WARNING
7.10.1. Theunitwillself-testtheamplifyingcircuitandsensorevery10seconds.
Whenthereisaproblemwiththeamplifyingcircuitorsensor,theunit
willbeepevery30secondsalongwithayellowashingLED,theLCD
willshow“---”,seeg.7.

7.11. END OF ALARM LIFE WARNING
7.11.1. Whenthealarmisattheendofitslife,itgivesthree“beep”audiblealarmsevery60secondstogetherwithaLEDvisualalarm,see

7.12. CALIBRATION
7.12.1. Calibration can only be carried out by a professional organisation, please DO NOT calibrate it yourself.
7.12.2. Calibrationiscarriedoutonagasconcentrationof400PPM,thiswillnotaecttheunit’saccuracy,everyunithasbeencalibrated
before delivery.
7.12.3. PresstheTESTbuttondownuntilall3LEDsareon,thenreleasetheTESTbutton,thegreenandyellowLEDswillturno,onlythe
redLEDwillstayon.ItsigniesthatthealarmisnowinCalibrationMode.
7.12.4. Theunitwillnowgive5minutesinwhichitcanbecalibrated.
7.12.5. IftheunitcannotdetectanychangeofCOconcentrationwithin5minutesitwillautomaticallyexitCalibrationMode.
7.12.6. AftercalibratingonCOgas,the3LEDswillash3timesatthesametimetoindicatetheCalibrationwassuccessful.
NOTE: 1.TheunithasaminimumCOconcentrationforcalibrating(250PPMminimum).Ifthecalibrationiscarriedoutonaconcentration
lowerthan250PPM,theunitwillnotchangeitspreviouscalibrationvalues.
2.WhentheCOconcentrationontheLCDisbiggerthan30PPM,theunitwillstopenteringintoCalibrationModetoprevent
mis-operation.
3.IftheuseraccidentallyentersintoCalibrationModebychance,justpresstheTESTbuttontoexittheCalibrationMode.
7.13. WHEN THE CO ALARM RAISES AN ALARM
7.13.1. Immediatelymoveoutdoors,openalldoors/windowstoventilatetheareaandallowthecarbonmonoxidetodisperse.
7.13.2. Wherepossibleto,turnoanyfuelburningappliance.
7.13.3. Evacuate the building. DO NOTre-enterthepremisesormoveawayfromtheopendoor/windowuntilemergencyserviceshave
arrived,thepremiseshavebeenairedoutandyouralarmhasreturnedtoitsnormalcondition.
7.13.4. Seekmedicalhelpimmediatelyforanyonesueringfromsymptomsofheadache,drowsiness,nauseaetc.
8DO NOTusetheappliancesagainuntiltheyhavebeencheckedbyaqualiedtechnician,thefaultlocatedandrepaired.
8. MAINTENANCE
8.1. Replace the entire unit every 5 years.
8.1. YourdetectorwillalertyoutopotentiallyhazardousCOconcentrationsinyourhomewhenmaintainedproperly.
8.2. Tomaintainyouralarminproperworkingorderitisrecommendedthatyou:
•TestthealarmbypressingtheTESTbuttonatleastonceamonth.
•CleanyourCOalarmregularlytopreventdustbuildup.Thiscanbedonewithavacuumcleanerwiththebrushattachmentoncea
month.Cleangentlyaroundthegrillesandsides.
•Neverusecleaningsolutionsonthealarm,simplywipewithadampcloth.
8DO NOTpaintthealarm.
