Overview
This application guide outlines the requirements and procedure to connect SITRANS RD500 and Siemens MultiRanger via an RS-
485 MODBUS connection.
The SITRANS RD500 is a remote data manager providing integrated web access, alarm event handling, and data capture for
instrumentation. Siemens MultiRanger is a versatile short- to medium-range ultrasonic single and multi-vessel level
monitor/controller. Process values from MultiRanger (such as level, volume, flow, totalization and pumping statistics) can be
logged in SITRANS RD500.
This application guide describes how to:
1. connect SITRANS RD500 to MultiRanger,
2. set up a data log in the RD500 to record information from the MultiRanger, and
3. configure SITRANS RD500 to read MODBUS registers from MultiRanger.
This application guide is an addition to the operating instructions. Please review the operating instructions for the RD500
application, and RD500 hardware to ensure you are familiar with configuring the SITRANS RD500.

TxB B (Terminal 36)
COMM COM (Terminal 34)
2. Set up a connection between the PC and SITRANS RD500, referring to the SITRANS RD500 Application instruction
manual if necessary. Be sure that you have connected the PC to the RD500 using the Ethernet crossover cable. (Note:
This application guide assumes the SITRANS RD500 has default network settings.)
Setting Up a Data Log in RD500
1. Open a web browser and type http://192.168.2.100 into the browser address bar – use Login: admin Password: rd500
when prompted. Note: If a browser is already open, close it and restart to ensure it has the correct network settings.
2. The browser window will show the Overview page. Click on Configure and then Logs; you should see the screen below.

3. Click on the check box to enable the first Log entry. Enter a Name (e.g. LevelLog), set the desired Interval and then click
Apply. (Another log entry will appear below the first one.)
Configuring RD500 to Read MODBUS Registers from MultiRanger
1. Click on I/O > MODBUS; you should see the screen below.
2. In the RS485 Port section, set the Baud Rate to 19200, as shown above.
3. Click on the checkbox to enable a MODBUS device, and then enter a Name, e.g. MultiRanger 100. Set Node to 1 and
click on Apply. (Another MODBUS device entry will appear below the first one.)
•Be sure all serial communication settings are the same on both the RD500 and the MultiRanger (Baud, data
bits, stop bits and parity).
•Parameter P772 controls the baud rate of the MultiRanger. Be sure to select Port 2 for RS485.
4. Click on Configure to open the device node page for the MultiRanger, shown below.

5. Enter the MODBUS start address for Reading (401010) with 1Element and Read Only access, and then click on Apply.
(Another Address entry will appear below the first one.)
6. Click on Configure for the first address entry. The following screen will appear.
7. Enter a Tag for the reading and set the remaining parameters as in the image above, and then click on Apply.
•Before DP – number of digits before the decimal place.
•After DP – number of digits after the decimal place.
•Be sure to select your previously enabled data log to begin logging the MultiRanger.
•If a value should be logged, but not displayed on the Overview screen, set View to No.
•Sign is register specific.
8. Click on Back to return to the list of tags.
9. Repeat steps 5 to 8 to add more registers for monitoring in SITRANS RD500.
