SECTION I
GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The SimpsonInstrumentationProductsGroupModel 880 Series
are rugged and reliableportableinstruments.Theseinstruments
are dividedinto two basic types.
(A) Model 880 Voltmeter
(B) Model 880 Wattmeter
These two basictypes are available ina variety of ranges to
meet the demand ofa wide field of applications,such asinthe
shop,laboratory, or QualityControlDepartment. The Model
880 Wattmeter may also be utilized asanACtoDC transfer
standard.
Wherever a precisemeasurementmust be taken, you will find
that Model 880 Instruments are dependable and easy to operate.
1.2 DESCRIPTION
The heart ofthe Model 880 Instrument isthe SimpsonDyna-
mometer typemovement.Theseinstruments are capable of
dependable ACandDC measurements. The voltmeterversions
of the Model 880 haveclearlymarkedbinding posts showing
the full scalevoltagevalue of eachrange.Wattmeterversions
of the Model 880 haveseparatebinding posts for voltage and
current. Theseunitsmeasuretruewattage,(compensated for
power factor, not simplyvolt-amperes).
All Model 880 instrumentshave a large, easy to read4-1/2"
scalelocated inthe upper half ofthe front panel. The scale is
handstepped and drawn to matcheachindividualmovement's
characteristics to insure the best possiblescaletracking
accuracy.
Parallax error has beenvirtuallyeliminated byuseofa thin
"knife edge"pointer andan imagereflectingmirrormounted
below the scale arc.
The phenoliccase is designedwithheavy reinforced walls and
back for maximumdurability and protection forthe circuit
components.

1.6 SERIAL NUMBERS
EachModel 880 instrument is serially numbered for ease of
identification.
The serial number is located inthe lower right handcorner
of the instrument scale. A space has beenprovided onthetitle
page inthe front of this manual.When a new instrument is
purchased, the customer is advised to insert the serial number
in this space, sohe willhave a permanentrecord ofthe instru-
ment for futureidentificationpurposes.

UNPACKING AND INSTALLATION
2.1 UNPACKING
All Model 880 Instruments are packed one unit per carton.
An instructionmanual is enclosedwitheachinstrument.When
removing the instrument from the carton DONOTCUTTHE
BOX!! Doing somay damage the instrument.Also, ifthein-
strument is found tobe damaged in transit or must be returned
for any other reason, the originalcarton canbe used.
2.2 INCOMING INSPECTION
Carefully check forany visiblesigns of damagethat may have
occurred in transitsuch asa cracked glass window, chipped
or marredcase or panel,etc.Checkinstrumentmovement for
freedom of action.Thereshould notbeany indication of bind-
ingor sticking ofthe pointer. Refer tothe page of specifica-
tions in this manual for balance and calibrationaccuracy,etc.
See Section 3 for operating instructions.
2.3 PHYSICAL MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS
The Model 880 Instruments maybe used inthe horizontal or
vertical position. The handle maybe used to position thein-
strument ata convenientangle by folding the handleback
under the instrumentcase.
The guaranteedaccuracy of Model 880 instrumentsappliesonly
when the unit is used in horizontalposition, (front panel of
Instrument facing upward). Thereforewhen the mostprecise
measurements are requiredalwaysplace the instrument ina
horizontal position.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
3.1 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
When connecting an instrumentinto a circuit, itis always a
sound safetypolicy to turn offall power and discharge all capa-
citors inthe circuitunder test. Thenproceed to connect the
instrumentinto the. circuit. Pictorialdiagrams are included
in this manual to serve asanaidin helping the technicianfol-
low the correct test procedure ina variety of circuitapplications.
Cautionshould be exercised to insure that the leadwire,clips,
and terminals areof sufficient gauge to carry the maximum
current tothe instrument. Batteries or externalpowersources
arenot required forthe Model 880 Instruments.
3.2 LEADS AND BINDING POSTS
Leads arenot suppliedwith the Model 880 instruments. A
spadetype of terminal onthe lead end that connects tothein-
strumentbinding post is verysatisfactory. The bindingpost
diameter is 0.2". The leadinsulationshouldhave a dielectric
strength well in excess ofthe maximumvoltageapplied tothe
instrument.
3.3 ZERO ADJUSTMENT
Eachtime the Model 880isput intoservice the zero setting
should be checked.Place the instrument inthe horizontal po-
sition.Check the movementpointer toseeifitis exactlyover
the zeromark onthe scale. Ifthe pointer isoff zero, it should
be reset. This is accomplished by placing a screw-driver inthe
slot ofthe zeroadjustscrewlocated inthe movementcover.
The zeroadjustscrew can then be rotated a full 360 degrees
clockwise or counterclockwise to place the instrumentpointer
exactlyover the zerograduation.When a precisezero setting
has beenmade,slowlyback offthe zeroadjustscrew a very
slightamount soasto relievepressure off the zeroadjustscrew
resting against the movementzeroadjust fork.

3.4 TEST PROCEDURES
MODEL 880 VOLTMETER
To measure ACorDC voltage,connectleads tothe binding
postmarked ± andtothe bindingpostwith the desiredvoltage
range. The leads can then be connected tothe test circuit. See
figure 9 for wiringdiagram. Itisnot necessary to observe po-
larity when measurements are takenwith the Model 880
Voltmeter.
When in doubt astothe correctvoltagerange tobe used,always
startwith the highestrange ofthe Model 880 Instrument, so
asto afford a greaterdegree of protection tothe unit.
3.5 TEST PROCEDURES-WATTMETER
MODEL 880 WATTMETER
A. SINGLE PHASE
To measurepower ina single-phasecircuit,only a singlemodel
880 wattmeter is required.
Caution should be exercised tobe sure the± potential and ±
current terminal are connected tothe sameside ofthe line.
Diagrams are provided in this manual toaidthe user in making
swift effective tests with the model 880 wattmeter.
B. THREE-PHASE, THREEWIRE
Wattage (power) measurement ina three-phase,threewirecir-
cuitbalanced or unbalanced is accomplished byuseoftwo
single-phase Model 880 wattmeters. See Figure 6 for wiring
diagram.
C. THREE-PHASE,FOURWIRE
Wattage (power) measurement ina three-phase four wirecir-
cuit, balanced or unbalanced, is accomplished byuseof three
single-phase Model 880 wattmeters. See Figure 8 for wiring
diagram.
Polaritymust be observed as indicated inthe following dia-
gramswithregard tothe markedbinding post of eachmodel
880 wattmeterused ina poly-phase test circuit.This isim-
portantsince a basemust be established to determinepolarity
of the readings.
When the power factor inthe circuitunder test is less than
0.5, the reading of one- ofthe model 880 wattmeters will read
reverse. After re-checking tosee that the connectionpolarity
of allthe wattmeters arethe same, the current coil leads ofthe
reverse readingunitshouldthen be reversed. The indication
should nowbe up-scale. This up-scale valueshould be noted
and recorded asa negative quantity. Thisnegativequantity
should then be addedalgebraically tothe totalpositive sum
to obtain the truepowerdissipation ofthe circuitunder test.
Example:
Ina typical three-phase four wirecircuitthreemodel 880
wattmeters are used.Meter #1 produces an up-scaleread-
ingof500 watts.
Meter #2 produces a reversereading.Re-checkleads for
correctpolarity before reversingleads to currentcoils.
The up-scalereading isnow —400 watts.Meter #3 pro-
duces an up-scalereading of475 watts.
Meter #1= +500 watts
Meter #2 = —400 watts
Meter #3= +475 watts
Algebraic Sum = +575 watts truepower

MAINTENANCE
4.1 PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
The Model 880 Dynamometer type movement is designed to
withstand a reasonableamount of shock and vibration.How-
ever,like any other fine piece of precisionequipment,care
should be exercised to avoidundueelectrical or mechanical
abuse. Momentaryelectricaloverloads of 500%should not
usually causepermanentdamage.However, after an accidental
overload occurs the accuracyshould be rechecked.
4.2 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE
Model 880 Instrumentsshould be checkedperiodically for
calibration accuracy. The timeperiodbetweenaccuracychecks
is flexible andis left tothe discretion ofthe individual toset
up a system that best meets his needs.

All instruments inthe Simpson Instrumentation Products
Group are warranted tothe original purchaser to perform ac-
cording to publishedspecificationsupondelivery, andtobe free
from defects in material or workmanship forone year from date
of shipment.Within this period, any instrument which isre-
turned, transportation charges prepaid, toour repairdepartment
oroneofour authorized service agencies, and which we confirm
tobe defective,will be repaired or adjusted(or, atour option,
replaced) withoutcharge.
Thiswarrantydoes not apply to tubes, transistors or batteries,
nor to instrumentswhichhavebeenalteredoutside ofour ser-
viceorganization,operated inan abnormalmanner, or abused.
Thiswarranty is expressed in lieu ofall otherliabilities ex-
pressed or implied. Wearenot liable for consequential damage.
4.5 REPAIR AND CALIBRATION
Complete facilities are maintained atour factory forthe repair
and calibration ofall Simpson instruments. Service is also
available for mostinstruments atthe RegionalServiceCenters
listed on backcover. No advanceauthorization is required to
make useof repair and calibrationservice atthe factory; how-
ever, RegionalServiceCentersshould be notified in advance
of shipment.Pack the equipmentsecurely and shipprepaid.
Itis usuallyadvisable to insure the shipment.
Enclosewith the equipment a letter containing:
1. Detailedreport of difficulty encountered or calibration
requested.
2. Purchasedate.
3. Indicationwhetherestimate is required before work is done.
4. Name and phonenumber of individual to contactshould
we have a questionregardingyour request.
5. Address to which the equipment istobe returned, andad-
dress to which any chargesshould be billed.

Maintenance
Recalibration is conductedwithstandardstraceable tothe
National Bureau of Standards. A certificate of calibration can
be issued if requested.

in a comprehensive testprogram to insure reliability mea-
suring upto today's needs, Simpson engineers put ISO of
(he improvedTautBand meters ona continuing 24-hour
lest(cycledzero to full scale 2200times per hour). Asof
August 30. 1964, the ISO metershave logged 25,243,000
cycles without failure. This is equivalent to over 70 years
of normal operation. Weekly calibration checksshow
that the meters are holding ± '/i% accuracy.Simpson
TautBandmeters also passed ASA tests for extreme
temperature, humidity, shock, and vibration.
