1 Requirements
• Cable modem or DSL/ADSL modem with RJ45 connector (not USB!).
• Standard 10/100BaseT (UTP) network cables with RJ45 connectors.
• PCs with TCP/IP network protocol.

2 Setting up the router
2.1 Physical installation
1 For the installation of the router it is assumed that you have at least one PC with a working broadband
Internet connection. It is also assumed that the modem is congured in accordance with the requirements of
your ISP and of the modem manufacturer. If not, consult your ISP support literature.
2 Before you begin, ensure that the power lead is not connected to either the router or the cable modem/DSL
modem. Leave your cable modem/DSL modem plugged in (telephone line or cable input).

3 Connect the LAN cables: For the WL-143, use standard LAN cables to connect the PCs to the LAN ports
(switch) on the router.
4 Connect your cable modem/DSL modem to the WAN-port on the router. Use the cable supplied with your
cable modem/DSL modem. If no cable was supplied with your modem, use a standard network cable.
5 Switch on the cable modem/DSL modem.
6 Connect the power supply adapter to the router. Use only the adapter supplied with the router.
7 Check the LEDs:
• The Power LED should be ON.
• The Status LED should ash, then turn Off. If it stays on, there is a hardware error.
• For each LAN (PC) connection, the LAN Link/Act LED should be ON (provided the PC is also ON.)
• The WAN LED should be ON.
• The WLAN LED should be ON.

3 PC Setup
3.1 Set up TCP/IP
3.1.1 Windows 98SE/ME
Right click the Network Neighbourhood icon on the desktop and click Properties. The following window will
be displayed:
3.1.2 Windows 2000/XP
Right click the My Network Places icon on the desktop and click Properties. The following window will be
displayed:
Right click the Local Area Connection of the correct network card, and then choose Properties.

If the list that appears on screen does not include a line, such as the one that has been selected above (“TCP/
IP -> network card”), then follow the steps indicated below to add this line:
• Click on the button “Add”
• Double-click on “Protocol”
• Select “Microsoft” and thereafter “TCP/IP”
• Click on “OK”
• Wait a few seconds, so that TCP/IP can be added. Thereafter, click “OK” to leave the network properties
screen. Restart your PC.
Select the line “TCP/IP -> Network card” as shown above. Click on the button Properties to obtain a window
similar to the following:
Check whether the setting “Obtain an IP address automatically” has been selected, as is illustrated above. The
DHCP server in the router will now assign an IP address to the PC.
Restart your PC, even if you have not made any changes, so that the DHCP server of the router can assign an
IP address to the PC.
3.2 Internet Access
3.2.1 Windows 98SE/ME/2000
• In the Taskbar, click on the Start button and select Settings - Control Panel - Internet options.
• Select the tab Connections and click on the button Settings.
• Select “I want to congure my Internet connection manually” or “I want to make a connection via a LAN
network” and click on “Next >”.
• Select “I want to connect via a LAN network” and click on “Next >”.
• Check carefully that all of the checkboxes in the screen Internet conguration for a LAN have not been
checked.
• Continue with the steps in the wizard, until the task is completed.
The PC conguration is now completed.

3.2.2 Windows XP
• In the Taskbar, click on the Start button and select - Settings - Control Panel - Internet options.
• Select the tab Connections and click the Setup... button.
• When the New Connection Wizard starts, click on Next.
• Select Connect to internet and click on Next.
• Select Set up my connection manually and click on Next.
• Select Connect using a broadband connection that is always on and click on Next.
• Click on Finish to close the Wizard.
• In the Taskbar, click on the Start button and select - Settings - Control Panel - Internet options.
• Select the Connections tab and click on the LAN Settings button.
• Check carefully that none of the boxes in the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window are checked.
The PC conguration is now completed.

4 Conguring the router for Internet access
• Make sure you have congured the TCP/IP settings as described in chapter 3. Do not forget to restart the
PC after you have nished conguring the TCP/IP settings so that the DHCP server of the router can assign
an IP address to your computer.
• Open your web browser. In the address bar enter the following address: http://192.168.1.1
• Log in to the router by using the username admin and password admin. Press OK.
• You will now see the Status page of your router, click Wizard to congure the router.
• The Setup wizard will now be displayed; check that the modem is connected and click Next.
• Select your country from the Country list.

• From Service, select your internet provider. Click Next.
• Depending on the chosen provider, you may need to enter your user name and password, MAC address or
hostname in the following window. After you have entered the correct information, click Next.
• In the next window you can congure the wireless settings if needed. If not, click Next.

• Click Reboot to complete the conguration.
• The router will now save the settings and restart, please wait 30 seconds and you will transferred back to
the status window. The conguration is complete.
• Wait for about 10 seconds to allow the router to connect to the Internet.

5 Wireless conguration
5.1 Wireless settings
If you wish to modify the wireless settings of the router for any reason this can be done in the router
conguration page (http://192.168.1.1) in the tab Wireless.
Mode: Select the appropriate mode for the built-in access point. This can on of the following.
• Mixed (B+G): Sets the access point to be compatible with the 802.11b and 802.11g standards
• G Only: Sets the access point to accept only 802.11g (54 Mbps) clients.
• B Only: Sets the access point to accept only 802.11b (11Mbps) clients.
Nitro Mode & MAX Frame burst: This router supports NitroXM(tm) technology and here you can turn the
different NitroXM(tm) features on or off. Leaving these items enabled has no inuence on non-NitroXM(tm)
clients so this is recommended.
SSID: Fill in the Wireless Network Name (SSID), for example “Sitecom’. The SSID is an unique ID used by
Access Point and stations to identify a wireless LAN. Make sure all wireless stations and Access Points have
the same SSID. The SSID can be set up to 32 characters and is case sensitive.
NAME: The name of the router.
Auto channel: When enabled the router will automatically select the best channel on which to broadcast it’s
wireless trafc.
Channel: Disables the auto channel feature allows you to manually congure the channel you wish to use.
5.2 Encryption
Your router supports a number of different security protocols used in wireless technology to secure your
wireless transmissions. One of the most commonly used technologies is encryption. Enabling encryption
causes your access point and wireless clients to encrypt their network trafc and thus making it impossible for
anyone without the right encryption key to “read” your network trafc.
