HOW SLENDERTONE TOTAL BODY MASSAGE WORKS
Slendertone Total Body Massage uses electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) technology. This technol-
ogy has been used in hospitals and by physiotherapists for over 50 years. Here is a summary of how it
works.
HOW TO USE SLENDERTONE TOTAL BODY MASSAGE
Always stimulate muscles isometrically. When stimulating the muscles of the
arms or legs, bear in mind that the muscle contraction may cause involuntary
limb movement, which could cause injury to you or others.Always ensure the
limb is secured to prevent movement (Fig. a & b).
There are just three steps to setting-up a session.
1) Choose the massage programme you wish to use
2) Connect the pads to the unit and place them correctly on the body following
your pad placement chart included in your pack or refer to pages 8-9 in the
user manual.
3) Start the programme and select the exercise intensity you feel comfortable,
we recommend you begin at intensity 15, as you get used to the product
increase to an intensity level you feel comfortable.
SLENDERTONE TOTAL BODY MASSAGE PROGRAMMES
Prog. Name Duration
1 Kneading Massage 12 min
2 Swedish Massage 30 min
3 Shiatsu Massage 20 min
4 Deep Tissue Massage 20 min
5 Athlete’s Massage 20 min
6 Power Massage 20 min
Stimulation
A gentle signal is sent through
the pads to your muscles.
Contraction
As the signal strength increases,
the muscle contracts exactly as
in normal exercise.
Relaxation
The signal then stops, allowing
your muscles to relax before
the next stimulation begins.

PROGRAMME INFORMATION
Programme 1 (Kneading Massage)
One of the main benefits of a kneading massage is relaxation; most people will benefit and experience
a general feeling of well being. This programme gently warms up the muscles prior to the massage.
It uses a technique called ‘twitch potentiation’ to prepare muscle fibres for sport or exercise. It
feels like a rhythmic massage. Increase the intensity until you get a strong but comfortable muscle
movement.
Programme 2 (Swedish Massage)
Swedish massage is specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against
deeper muscles and bones. It is said that a Swedish massage is good for treating insomnia, general
tension and headaches. This programme produces muscle twitches at very low frequency and it
feels like a tapping massage. This stimulates blood flow and helps speed up the removal of lactic
acid as it accelerates the exchange between the blood supply and the muscle fibres. As a result,
the muscles recover more quickly from fatigue, becoming more relaxed with reduced stiffness. Use
programme 2 after intense exercise to promote recovery and relaxation.
Programme 3 (Shiatsu Massage)
Shiatsu massage is used to stimulate the body’s natural flow of energy, helping to restore a sense
of balance and well being. It feels like a tapping massage, but is a little softer, it starts off as a
faster tapping sensation and slows down to a slower sensation leaving you feeling relaxed. Pressure
is applied to the areas of energy lines (meridians) to promote good health by ‘stimulating the body’s
energy flow.
Programme 4 (Deep Tissue Massage)
A deep-tissue massage helps loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from muscles and get blood and
oxygen circulating properly. Deep tissue or sports massage is a common means of treating musculo-
skeletal disorders and can be performed on the full body or tailored to treat a specific area or injury.
As well as improved circulation, pain reduction and relaxation, deep tissue massage is effective for
injuries such as lower back pain and strains and is a fantastic aid to postural imbalances. This form
of stimulation activates the muscles in a rhythmic motion in a short contraction/ relaxation cycle. It
feels like a kneading massage.
Programme 5 (Athlete’s Massage)
Athlete’s Massage is a form of massage typically used before, during and after athletic events. The
purpose of the massage is to prepare the athlete for peak performance, to promote flexibility and to
prevent injury. It can then be used after exercise to drain toxins from the muscles, to relieve fatigue
and swelling and to reduce muscle tension. This programme uses a low frequency pulse train, which
favours slow twitch fibres. It develops their aerobic capacity and capillary supply and thereby improves
fatigue resistance during long-duration, moderate-intensity exercise. Increase the intensity until you
get a strong and deep muscle contraction, but do not exceed your comfort level.
Programme 6 (Power Massage)
This programme uses a pulse frequency appropriate to fast twitch muscle fibres. It improves their
anaerobic capacity and is used for improving maximum muscle strength. The massage comprises a
sequence of work phases separated by longer relaxation phases. Increase the stimulation intensity
until you get a strong and deep contraction. Do not exceed your comfort level.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE
INSERTING THE BATTERY
1. The battery compartment is located on the back of your unit. To open the
compartment, slide the cover off with your thumb in the direction of the arrow ( ).
Insert the new battery as shown by the direction indicator printed on the base of
the compartment (Fig. a).
2. The battery symbol ( ) will appear on the display at all times during opera-
tion. As its power decreases, the 3 bars on the battery symbol disappear one by
one. The outline of the battery symbol will flash to indicate when it needs to be
replaced. Remove the old battery by placing your thumb against the bottom and
lifting it out. You should only use high-quality, 9V alkaline batteries to operate your
Slendertone Total Body Massage unit.
RUNNING A SESSION
1. Insert the leads into the sockets on the base of the unit (Fig. b). The leads are
designed to be held firmly in place once inserted. Attach a pad to each lead (Fig.
c).
2. Remove the liners from the adhesive side of each pad (Fig. d) and position the
pads correctly (see pad placement information on pages 8-9). Keep the liners safe,
as you will need them at the end of the session.
3. If necessary, secure the limb(s) to be worked on before using your unit (Fig. e).
Otherwise relax on your bed and enjoy a Slendertone Total Body Massage pro-
gramme.
4. Switch on your Slendertone Total Body Massage unit by pressing the On/ Off
button for two seconds (Fig. f).
5. Press the Programme button to select your chosen massage. You cannot change
a programme during a session.
6. Increase the intensity and you should initially feel a tingling in the area of the
pads. As the intensity is increased, more muscle fibres are stimulated, so you should
feel a strong, comfortable contraction and may see visible muscle movement. Do
not exceed your comfort level, though. Reduce the intensity if it becomes
uncomfortable. Press the lock button to prevent accidental changes to the intensity.
Note: We recommend you begin at intensity 15 and increase as you get used to
using Total Body Massage to a level that is comfortable for you.

PAUSING A SESSION
If you wish to pause a session at any point, briefly press the On/ Off button and
the stimulation will stop. Briefly press the same button a second time to un-pause
the programme.
USING THE TRIGGER
If you wish to vary the pre-set contraction-relaxation cycle, you can use the Trigger
to control the length of a contraction. Once a contraction has reached its peak,
press and hold the Trigger button (Fig. a) to maintain that contraction for as long
as you wish. Once you release the Trigger, the unit will enter the relaxation cycle.
Important:
You should never hold the Trigger for an excessive length of time and should
always ensure that you have sufficient relaxation periods. If you hold the Trigger
for too long without allowing your muscles to relax sufficiently, the exercise can
become gradually less effective, as the muscles can fatigue quickly.
FINISHING THE SESSION
The session will stop automatically at the end of each programme’s pre-set treat-
ment time. Remove the pads and replace them on their protective liners. Store
your unit in the pouch provided until your next Slendertone Total Body Massage session.
Note:
You should only do one session per day on any single body area.

TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
* Your Slendertone Total Body Massage unit has a pad contact feature which continuously
checks the connection between the leads and pads and between the pads and your skin. When poor
contact is detected:
- The intensity bar for the side(s) affected will flash.
- The pad contact symbol will begin flashing on the display .
- Your unit will beep and the timer will pause.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONSQUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Can EMS exercise cause muscle soreness?
As with all vigorous exercise or massage, some muscle soreness can be expected. This is normal
and should go away after a day or two. Use a low toning intensity for a few sessions if you are
experiencing muscle soreness.
My skin is red after a session. Why?
Some skin redness after a session is natural. It is partly due to an increase in blood-flow and should
fade after your Total Body Massage session. You should not be concerned about this. However, if
the redness is excessive, it may mean that you have sensitive skin, which can react to the pads. If
the problem persists, you should stop using the unit.
The stimulation is uncomfortable. How can I improve this?
Ensure the pads are correctly positioned and pressed firmly against clean skin. Always pause or
switch off your unit before repositioning the pads and refer to the pad placement information on
pages 8-10.
I can feel a tingling in the bone. What should I do?
Pause the programme and reposition the pads away from any bone.
How do I know when to replace the pads?
If the signal is weakening, even though the battery is still OK, it usually indicates that the pads are
worn and need replacing. After a number sessions the pads can become less adhesive, resulting in
poor skin contact. If this occurs, you should replace the pads. Replacement pads can be purchased
from your nearest SLENDERTONE retailer, by calling your local SLENDERTONE Careline or visiting www.slen-
dertone.com
Carelines:
UK: 0845 070 7777
Rep. of Ireland: 1890 9223388
International: +353 1 844 1016
How often do I need to replace the pads?
You should replace the pads when they no longer adhere to the skin or when the muscle contractions
are noticeably weaker compared to previous usage.
