2.1 Intended Use
The product must only be installed in the following SMA inverters:

The product has been designed and tested in accordance with international safety requirements. As
with all electrical or electronical devices, there are residual risks despite careful construction. To
prevent personal injury and property damage and to ensure long-term operation of the product,
read this section carefully and observe all safety information at all times.

DANGER
Danger to life due to electric shock when live components or cables of the
inverter are touched
High voltages are present in the conductive components or cables of the inverter. Touching live
parts and cables of the inverter results in death or lethal injuries due to electric shock.
• Disconnect the inverter from voltage sources and make sure it cannot be reconnected
before working on the device.
• Wear suitable personal protective equipment for all work on the product.
• Do not touch non-insulated parts or cables.
DANGER
Danger to life due to electric shock when touching live system components in
case of a ground fault
If a ground fault occurs, parts of the system may still be live. Touching live parts and cables
results in death or lethal injuries due to electric shock.
• Disconnect the inverter from voltage sources and make sure it cannot be reconnected
before working on the device.
• Touch the cables of the PV array on the insulation only.
• Do not touch any parts of the substructure or frame of the PV array.
• Do not connect PV strings with ground faults to the inverter.
• Ensure that no voltage is present and wait five minutes before touching any parts of the PV
system or the product.
WARNING
Danger to life due to fire or explosion
In rare cases, an explosive gas mixture can be generated inside the inverter under fault
conditions. In this state, switching operations can cause a fire or explosion. Death or lethal
injuries due to fire or flying debris can result.
• Ensure that unauthorized persons have no access to the inverter.
• Disconnect the PV array from the product via an external disconnection device. Do not
operate the DC load-break switch on the product in the event of ground fault
CAUTION
Risk of burns from hot surfaces
The surface of the inverter can get very hot. Touching the surface can result in burns.
• Mount the inverter in such a way that it cannot be touched inadvertently.
• Do not touch hot surfaces.
• Wait 30 minutes for the surface to cool sufficiently.
• Observe the safety messages on the inverter.

NOTICE
Damage to the enclosure seal in subfreezing conditions
If you open the inverter when temperatures are below freezing, the enclosure seals can be
damaged. This can lead to moisture entering the inverter.
• Only open the inverter if the ambient temperature is not below 0°C (32°F).
• If a layer of ice has formed on the enclosure seal when temperatures are below freezing,
remove it prior to opening the inverter (e.g. by melting the ice with warm air). Observe the
applicable safety regulations.
NOTICE
Damage to the product due to sand, dust and moisture ingress
Sand, dust and moisture penetration can damage the product and impair its functionality.
• Only open the inverter if the humidity is within the thresholds and the environment is free of
sand and dust.
• Do not open the inverter during a dust storm or precipitation.
• Only disassemble the PowerUnit if a new PowerUnit is already available.
NOTICE
Destruction of the measuring device due to overvoltage
• Only use measuring devices with a DC input voltage range of 600V or higher.
Observe superordinate standards
The repair work on devices and the consideration and application of other standards which
correspond to a superordinate standard is the responsibility of the qualified person performing
the work. Unauthorized alterations will void guarantee and warranty claims and in most cases
terminate the operating license. SMA Solar Technology AG shall not be held liable for any
damage caused by such changes.

Compatibility problems when mixing up the inverter versions
The Power Unit type "SBx.xSPUS41PU-AT" is exclusively approved for use with inverters of the
type " SBx.x-1SP-US-41 The inverter can only be distinguished by the type plate. Mounting the
Power Unit on the inverter of the type "SBx.x-1SP-US-40" causes problems with the firmware of
inverter.
The serial number of the inverter does not change when the power unit is replaced.

1. Activate the user interface of the inverter (see the inverter manual).
2. Log into the user interface as an Installer.
3. Select the menu Device Configuration.
4. Check the installed firmware version. The firmware version must be up to date.
5. Update the firmware to the latest version if it is not up to date. To do this, download the current
update package at www.SMA-Solar.com and select the menu Settings > Perform firmware
update in the overview on the user interface, and load the saved update package and select
[Perform firmware update].
☑ The firmware version is being updated.
6. If the firmware version could not be updated, replace the PowerUnit without the current
firmware version.

5 Disconnecting the Inverter from Voltage Sources
Prior to performing any work on the inverter, always disconnect it from all voltage sources as
described in this section. Always adhere to the prescribed sequence.
DANGER
Danger to life due to electric shock when live components or DC conductors
are touched
When exposed to sunlight, the PV array generates dangerous direct voltage. Even if the DC
load-break switch of the inverter is in the O, position, there will be dangerous direct voltage
present in the DC conductors and on the DC-in terminal block in the Connection Unit. Touching
live DC conductors results in death or lethal injuries due to electric shock.
• If an external DC disconnecting switch is available, open the external DC disconnecting
switch.
• Leave the DC-in terminal block plugged into the Connection Unit and only touch it on the
black enclosure.
NOTICE
Destruction of the measuring device due to overvoltage
• Only use measuring devices with a DC input voltage range of 600V or higher.
Procedure:
1. Disconnect the AC circuit breaker and secure it against reconnection.
2. Set the DC load-break switch of the inverter to O.
3. If the multifunction relay is used, switch off any supply voltage to the load.
4. Wait until the LEDs have gone out.
5. Unscrew all six screws of the enclosure lid of the Connection Unit and remove the enclosure lid
carefully towards the front (TX25). When doing so, note that the LED assembly in the
enclosure lid and the communication assembly in the inverter are connected via a ribbon
cable.

6. Pull the ribbon cable connecting the LED assembly in
the enclosure lid to the communication assembly out
of the jack located on the communication assembly.
7. Use a current clamp to ensure that no current is present in the DC conductors.
8. Ensure there is no voltage on the AC-out terminal block between L1 and N and L2 and N
using a suitable measuring device. To do this, stick the test probe in each rectangular opening
of the terminal.
9. Ensure there is no voltage on the AC-out terminal block between L1 and the equipment
grounding conductor and L2 and the equipment grounding conductor using a suitable
measuring device. To do this, stick the test probe in each rectangular opening of the terminal.

6 Disassembling the Defective Power Unit
Prior to disassembling the defective Power Unit, all connections between the Power Unit and the
Connection Unit must be severed. Only then can the Power Unit be removed from the Connection
Unit. Except the ribbon cable, all cables connected to the communication assembly can remain
plugged in and do not need to be removed to disassemble the PowerUnit.
Compatibility problems when mixing up the inverter versions
The Power Unit type "SBx.xSPUS41PU-AT" is exclusively approved for use with inverters of the
type " SBx.x-1SP-US-41 The inverter can only be distinguished by the type plate. Mounting the
Power Unit on the inverter of the type "SBx.x-1SP-US-40" causes problems with the firmware of
inverter.
The serial number of the inverter does not change when the power unit is replaced.
Procedure:
1. Check on the type label that the Power Unit supplied and the inverter are of the same type
before disassembly. If the power unit does not match the inverter, contact the Service
department (see Section9, page18).
2. Disconnect the inverter from all voltage sources (see Section5, page10).
3. Remove the terminal block with the connected DC
conductors from slot DC-in. To do this, unscrew the
screws using a flat-blade screwdriver (blade width:
4mm (5⁄32in)) and pull the terminal block out of
the slot. While doing so, only touch the terminal
block on the black enclosure.
4. Remove the terminal block with the connected AC
conductors from slot AC-out. To do this, unscrew the
screws using a flat-blade screwdriver (blade width:
4mm (5⁄32in)) and pull the terminal block out of
the slot.

5. If there is a switch and an outlet for secure power
supply operation connected, remove the terminal
block with the connected cable from the SPS slot. To
do this, unscrew the screws using a flat-blade
screwdriver (blade width: 4mm (5⁄32in)) and pull
the terminal block out of the slot.
6. Pull the ribbon cable connecting the communication
assembly to the PowerUnit out of the
communication assembly.

7. Unscrew the two screws on the right and left side of the PowerUnit (TX25) and retain together
with the washers for later use. Hold the Power Unit to avoid tilting.
8. Lift the Power Unit upwards from the Connection
Unit.

9. If necessary, remove residual insulation material from the two connection openings at the top
of the Connection Unit.

1. Ensure that the DC load-break switch is switched off (see Section5, page10).
2. Plug the new Power Unit into the Connection Unit. Ensure that the screw holes on the left and
right sides of the PowerUnit are directly over those of the ConnectionUnit; and the cables
protruding from the PowerUnit must not be pinched.
3. Tighten two screws with two washers on the right and left side of the PowerUnit (TX25)
(torque: 6Nm ± 0.3Nm (53in-lb ± 2.65in-lb)).
4. If the enclosure lid of the new Power Unit is a transport lid (see information on the enclosure
lid), replace the transport lid of the new Power Unit with the enclosure of the defective Power
Unit:
• Unscrew all screws of the upper enclosure lid
(TX25) and remove it.
• Position the upper enclosure lid with the six
screws and serrated conical spring washers on
the enclosure and tighten it in the specified
order (TX25, torque: 6Nm (53in)).

6. Plug the terminal block with the connected DC
conductors into slot DC-in in the Connection Unit.
While doing so, only touch the terminal block on the
black enclosure.

Danger to life due to electric arc
The terminal block must be fastened to the slot with two screws. If the terminal block is not
correctly mounted and comes out of the slot, an electric arc can form. An electric arc can
cause life-threatening injuries.
• Mount the terminal block on the slot as described in the following.
8. Tighten (torque: 1.7Nm ± 0.3 Nm (15.05in-lb ±
2.65in-lb)) the screws of the terminal block using a
flat-blade screwdriver (blade width: 4mm (5⁄32in)).
9. Ensure that the terminal block is securely in place.
10. Plug the terminal block with the connected AC
conductors into the AC-out slot in the
ConnectionUnit, and tighten (torque: 1.7Nm ± 0.3
Nm (15.05in-lb ± 2.65in-lb)) with a flat-blade
screwdriver (blade width: 4mm (5⁄32in)).

11. If applicable, plug the terminal block with the
connected cable for secure power supply operation
into the SPS slot in the Connection Unit, and tighten
(torque: 1.7Nm ± 0.3 Nm (15.05in-lb ± 2.65in-
lb)) with a flat-blade screwdriver (blade width:
4mm (5⁄32in)).
12. Commission the inverter (see inverter manual). The inverter ramp-up lasts up to 20 minutes. All
relevant information is transferred from the ConnectionUnit to the PowerUnit, and the
PowerUnit may also be updated.
13. Wait 20 minutes before connecting the inverter to the communication network to avoid the
transfer of false data after the set-up.
14. If the inverter firmware could not be updated prior to replacing the PowerUnit and the inverter
is not yet equipped with the current firmware version, perform a firmware update (see manual
of the inverter).
15. If a firmware update has been carried out, ensure that all parameters have been transferred
correctly and that the inverter feeds grid-compliant current into the utility grid.

1. Package the defective Power Unit for pick-up. Use the original packaging of the new Power
