GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Your SOMMERKAMP TS-680EDX transceiver has been désignée! for continous
heavy duty mobile and base Station application.
It c n be oper ted w ith microphone nd intern l spe ker or h ndset, spe ker/
microphone combin tion, telephoneset incorpor ting utom tic voice oper ted
tr nsm it/receive switching, extern l sélective c lling w ith utom tic nswer
b ck nd m ny more.
GENERAL
The tr nsceiver is designed to op er te fro m 13.8 Volt DC powersupply s
b se or mobile st tion. It's str ght forw rd 80 ch nnel c p bility llows it to
oper te on ny ch nnel w ithin 26.965 nd 27.855 MHz.
RECEIVER SECTION
The receiver section is designed to receive mplitude modul ted (AM /A3)
sign is in the 26.965 to 27.855 MHZ. (11 m eter) citizens b nd .
The unique com bin tion of low noise Field E ffe ct Tr nsistor (FET), double
conversion, com bin tion of mech nic l cer m ic, nd L/C filte rs, fu lly uto
m tic noise lim ite r (ANL) nd h ifi qu lity spe ker m plifier w ill give you
exception l réception qu lity in this fine piece of equipment.
In ddition, the bove com bin tion of the l test technology provides you with
se nsitivity nd unw nted sign l rejection nd noise suppression v il ble
previously only in sp ce nd m ilit ry com munic tion equipment.
The power supply of the receiver RF. IF. nd oscill tor section is st bilized
by n extreme sh rp cu t-off Zener diode to obt in the high sen sitivity nd
unw nted sign l rejection. The fu lly utom tic sériés gâte noise lim iter, which
virtu liy cuts o ff the udio output during ignition noise puises, is defe t bie
to m ke even the we kest sign l udible which otherwise would be eut o ff
by the threshold level of the ANL switching diode.
The high squelch sen sitivity is chieved by using seper te squelch detector
nd sw itching circ uit w ith c refully b l nced hystérésis. The tr ns-
form erless h ifi qu lity udio power m plifier w ill drive ny lo d between 8
ohms nd indefininite such s intern i spe ker or extern l spe ker/microphone
or he dset com bin tions h ving the bove impéd nces.
The m eter indic tes the fie ld strength during réception of sign l.

TRANSMITTER & MODULATOR SECTION:
The tr sm itte r section is désignée! for continous he vy duty tr nsm ission of
m plitude modul ted (AM /A3) sign is in the 26.965 to 27.855 MHz. (11 mete'r)

The tr nsm itter consists of Ph se Locked Loop c ircu it nd n one-cryst l
controlled oscill tor, of which output is synthesized in d ss B mixer, followd
by double tuned filte r, d ss A B I buffers, nd highly efficie nt collector-
modul ted d ss C driver nd power output st ge, coupled by séries nd pi-
m tching filte rs to the ntenn j ck.
The modul tor consists of n input udio filte r, ALC m plifier integr ted pre-
nd power m p lifie r-- nd m odul tion tr nsform er. This gives you the lowest
possible modul tion disto rtio n nd up to 100% modul tion.
The input is designed for 500 ohm dyn mie microphone or 32 ohm spe ker/
microphone com bin tion w ith 1K ohm resistor in sériés.
RECEIVE/TRANSMIT SWITCHING
The re ceive/tr nsm it sw itching is done by single pole, single throw switch
in the microphone nd combin tion of NPN nd PNP switching tr nsistors.
METER
The combin tion m eter provides you w ith the following functions:
During receive m ode..................it indic tes the incom ing sign l strength.
During tr n sm it m ode ............. it indic tes the output power.
For norm l oper tion, be sure if the RF GAIN knob is pushed.
For checking the SWR of your ntenn , pull the RF GAIN knob, then the m eter
w ill function s SWR meter.
MOBILE INSTALLATION
Mounting br cket nd screws re supplied for mounting the tr nsceiver under-
ne th the d shbo rd. Microphone h nger nd screws re lso supplied. For
ele ctric l connection, firs t m ke sure th t the tr nsceiver is turned off.
Connect the red wire to the ACC term in l of the ignition sw itch or + term in l
of b ttery nd ground the bl ck wire to the ch ssis of the rehicle. The bl ck
wire should be grounded s short s possible to m inim ize noise interférence.
This tr nsceiver is designed for use with the neg tive ground system.

Connect the ntenn pług to the ntenn j ck with n SWR-Meter inserted
into the ntenn c bie.
Connect the microphone to the microphone j ck.
Switch the tr nsceiver ON.
The receiving, m eter nd the ch nnel l mp, sh ll lig ht up.
Turn the squelch control to min. (ANL OFF)
Turę the Volume control to m x. Until you he r rushing sound from the
spe ker.
Swith the ch nnel selector to CH. 1.
Push the tr nsm it button on the microphone nd check the SWR of your
ntenn w ith the SWR-Meter im m edi tely by pulling the RF GAIN knob.
The SWR must be less th n 1 to 2. Do this w ithin 3 seconds, bec use if the
SWR is higher th n 1 to 2 it is very lik ely th t the tr n sm ittin g tr nsistors
w ill be d m ged if you oper te the tr nsm itte r too long w ith ntenn
h ving too high SWR. Also re d c refully the recommend tions on
ntenn s
NOTE: In c se the SWR is too high, the Autom tic protection circuit w ill
sw itch off the tr nsm itter.
If the SWR is less than 1 to 2 continue Checkout? if it is more than 1 to 2
repair or replace your antenna.

m it button nd switch the ch nnel selector to ch nnel 1,2 etc. until you
receive st tion.

to m x. Until the b ckground noise ju st dis ppe rs. When the st tion St rts
to tr nsm it g in, you w ill he r this st tion, but you w ill not he r the b ck
-ground noise during non tr n sm itting periods.
OPERATING INSTRUCTONS
The tr nsceiver is re dy to oper te when it is inst lled w ith n ntenn
properly connected. Note th t the com munic tion r nge diffe rs depending upon
the environment where the tr nsceiver is oper ted.
You m y re ch 30 or 40 kilom eters where no obst cle exists, but the r nge
m y be lim ited to 5 or 6 kilom eters in cities where m ny high buildings
disturb the com munic tion.
1) Turn the set on by switching the LOW CH-OFF-HIGH CH. sn p switch to
the desired ch nnel r nge nd the ch nnel di l w ill be lighted. Turn
the volum e control clockw ise to incre se the udio sound. Note th t the
volume control knob is only for djusting the udio volume, not to in
cre se the tr nsm ittin g power.
2) Set the D ELTA-TUNE for best réception.
3) Turn the squelch control clockwise until incoming noise is elim in ted. Do
not turn it excessively s the sen sitiv ity m y be reduced.
4) Turn the squelch control counter-clockwise to switch o ff the ANL
(Autom tic Noise Lim iter).
5) Turn the RF GAIN control to the m xim um clockwise position.
6) Turn the ch nnel selector knob to the desired ch nnel.
7) For tr nsm itting, press the button on the microphone nd spe k into it
norm lly. Rele se the button for receiving.
METER
The m eter re ding indic tes the sign l strength t receiving, nd functions s
n output indic tor t tr nsm itting, nd the m eter pointer should be w ith in
the red zone under the norm l conditions.
CIRCUIT PROTECTION INDICATION LAMP
The l mp is on when the ntenn is mism tched, nd the tr nsm ittin g c ircu it
w ill be eut o ff. This L mp is loc ted underne th the ch nnel lens.
