GENERAL DESCRIPTION
You SOMMERKAMP TS-5632 t ansceive has been désignée! fo continous heavy
duty po table application. It can be ope ated with exte nal antenna, powe supply,
headset, telephoneset inco po ating automatic voice ope ated t ansmit/ eceive
switching, sho t type ubbe antenna, exte nal sélective calling with automatic
answe back and many mo e.
GENERAL:
The t ansceive is designed to ope ate with inte nal d y cells o echa geable
nickel-cadmium batte ies such as N500AA set with the 12360 cha ge , o with
an exte nal 12V DC powe supply such as NT30, o with an automobile batte y.
To p event excesive batte y d ain,.this t ansceive has a stand-by switch in
combination with the ope ate and call switch, which by a timing ci cuit and
a switching t ansisto switches the eceive on fo 2 seconds and off fo 10
seconds. This device extends the batte y life 6 times longe compa ed with
continous squeiched stand-by ope ation. It is necessa y, howeve , fo a calling
station to cali by minimum 10-15 seconds befo e eceiption and contact is
possible.
RECEIVER SECTION:
The eceive section is designed to eceive amplitude moduiated signais (AM/A3)
in the 26.965 to 27.275MHz. (11 mete ) citizens band. The unique combination
of low noise Field Effect T ansisto s (FET), double conve sion, a combination
of mechanical ce amic, and L/C fiite s, fully automatic noise limite and a hifi
quality speake amplifie will give you exceptional éception quality in this
fine piece of equipment.
In addition, the above combination of the latest technology p ovides you with
a sensitivity and unwanted signal ejection and noise supp ession availabie
p eviously only in space and milita y communication equipment.
The powe supply of the eceive section is stabilized by an ext eme Sha p
cut-off Zene diode cont olled sé iés stabilize to obtain the high sensitivity
and unwanted signal ejection. The fully automatic sé iés gâte noise limite ,
which vi tually cuts off the audio output du ing ignition noise puises, is de-
featable to make even the weakest signal audible which othe wise would be
eut off by the th eshold level of the ANL switching diode.
The high squelch sensitivity is achieved by using a sepe ate squelch detecto
and switching ci cuit with a ca efully balanced hysté ésis. The t ansfo me iess
hifi quality audio powe amplifie will d ive any load between 32 ohms and
indefininite such as inte nai speake /mic ophone combination o exte nal speake /
mic ophone o headset combinations having the above impédances.
The mete indicates the field st ength du ing éception of a signal, and without
signal the batte y condition.

TRANSMITTER &, MODULATOR SECTION:
The t ansmitte section is designed fo continous heavy duty t ansmission of
amplitude modulated (AM/A3) signais in the 26.965 to 27.275 MHz. (11 mete )
citizens band.
The t ansmitte consists of 2 c ystal cont olled oscillato s inco po ating 12
c ystals. The output of these oscillato s a e synthesized in a dass B mixe ,
followed by a double tuned filte , a dass ABI buffe , and a highly efficient
collecto -modulated dass C d ive and powe output stage, coupled by sé ies
and pi-matching filt'e s to the antenna jack and via a loading coil to the od
antenna.
The modulato consists of an input audio filte , integ ated p e-and powe
amplifie and modulation t ansfo me . This gives you the lowest possible
modulation disto tion and up to 100% modulation. The input is designed fo 1
to 10K ohm dynamie mic ophone o 32 ohm speake /mic ophone combination
with a 1K ohm esisto in sé iés.
RECEIVE/TRANSMIT SWITCHING:
The eceive/t ansmit switching is done by a single pole, single th ow mic o
switch with a life time of about 5 million ope ations and a combination of
NPN and PNP switching t ansisto s which also function in the eceive mode
as sé iés voltage stabilize . Fo emote switching, a pa allel contact is p ovided
at the accesso y jack.
METER:
The combination mete p ovides you with the following functions:
Du ing eceive mode ....... it indicates the incoming signal st ength, and without
incoming signais the batte y condition.
Du ing t ansmit mode--- it indicates the output powe .
STAND-BY:
The stand-by featu e is inco po ated to educe batte y d ain du ing monito ing
of a channel if no continous communication is necessa y,
POWER SUPPLY :
This t ansceive is designed to ope ate with a nominal 12V DC powe supply
such as the inte nai d y cells o nickel-cadmium echa geable batte ies o an-
exte nal powe supply delive ing at least 1.5 ampe es. The equipment will
ope ate f om 10-16V DC without any damage.

UNPACKiNG AND CHECKOUT
Unpack the ca ton ca efully and check fo exte io damages.
Check that the volume cont ol is in the OFF position, the squelch cont o! in
the ANL-OFF position and the standby-ope ate-call switch in OPERATE position.
P ess the dent of the batte y compa tment lid and pull it out towa d the bottom.
Lift out the batte y holde and inse t 8 d y cells into the holde as indicated,
© to 0 , © to © pole. Leave the 2 dummy batte ies in the holde as they a e.
If you use echa geable batte ies, inse t 10 pièces of them in the same manne
as above but emove the dummy batte ies.
Snap the batte y holde onto the snap connecto p ovided and einse t the
holde into the compa tment.
Replace the compa tment lid by inse ting it st aight f om the bottom up until
it snaps in ightly.
Then switch the t ansceive ON by otating the volume cont ol clockwise and
check that the mete needle moves into the ed field. If the mete needle does
not move, switch OFF immediately and check if the standby-ope ate-call switch
is in the OPERATE position. If this is the case, open the batte y compa tment
to emove the batte y holde to ensu e that the batte ies a e co ectly in-
se ted.
Now tu n the volume cont ol until noise is hea d f om the speake . Then extend
the od antenna to the füll length.

Switch the standby-ope ate-call switch to STANDBY. The noise f om the
speake shall cease and the mete needle shall move to the black field.
Within 10-15 seconds, the noise f om the speake shall be hea d again and
the mete needle moves to the ed field. Wait fo this cycle to epeat itself
seve al times, then switch to OPERATE.
Rotate the channel switch step by step f om channel 1 to 24 and check that
some noise and/o signal is hea d on each channel.
Push the push-to-talk (PTT) switch and obse ve the mete needle. It shall move
into the ed field. Now whistle into the speake /mic ophone. The needle shall
move a little. The same applies while p essing and eleasing the call switch
between ope ate and call.
Repeat this check on each channel f om 1 to 24. This complétés the Checkout.
OPERATION
Extend the od antenna competely and switch the t ansceive ON by otating
the volume cont ol clockwise.
Rotate the channel switch to the desi ed channel.
Adjust the volume cont ol to a comfo table level.
P ess the PTTswitch and talk with a no mal voice into the speake /mic ophone
f om a distance of 5-10 cm. Afte completing you t ansmission, elease the
PTT switch, and the t ansceive is eady fo éception. Always emembe
that you opposite pa ty cannot hea you while he is t ansmitting.
Adjust the squelch cont ol so that the backg ound noise just disappea s du ing
non-t ansmitting pe iods of you opposite pa ty.
Fo stand-by ope ation, switch the STANDBY-OPERATE-CALL switch to STANDBY.
Remembe that the t ansceive is 10 seconds OFF and 2 seconds ON and that
you opposite pa ty has to call fo at least 10-15 seconds so that you can
eceive the call. Call eithe by voice o by the built-in tone call fo this
du ation.
To answe the eceived call, switch to OPERATE, push the PTT switch and talk
into the speake /mic ophone.
To eceive weak signais, tu n the squelch cont ol fui ly counte -clockwise so
that the ANL is switched OFF.
To switch the t ansceive OFF, tu n the volume cont ol fully counte -clockwise
until a click is hea d and the mete needle moves into the black field.
Impo tant:
If you will not ope ate the t ansceive fo a long time, emove the batte ies
f om the equipment so that they will not co ode and damage the t ansceive .
The same applies if you use the t ansceive continously with an exte nal powe
supply.

ACCESSORI ES
To install N500AA echa geable■ nickel-cadmium batte ies,follow the inst uctions
unde the Chapte UNPACKING AND CHECKOUT of this manuał.
Cha ge the N500AA nickel-cadmium batte ies by plugging the 1236 cha ge into
the cha ge jack. Cha ge fo 14 hou s. It is not possible to ope ate the
t ansceive du ing cha ging.
To use the t ansceive with the NT30AC powe supply, plug it into the exte nal
powe jack. Fo using a diffe ent powe supply, it is ecommended to select a
low ipple, stabilized supply, delive ing at lest 1 ampe e at 12V with a maximum
output voltage of 16V.
To connect the t ansceive to a 12V automobile batte y, use an 1 ampe e fuse
in sé iés with the positive wi e.
Solde the positive wi e to the cente of the exte nal powe plug and the
negative wi e to its fin.
In case you use the t ansceive with the RA1608 ubbe antenna, sc ew out the
telescopic antenna and eplace it with the ubbe antenna.
Fo p ivate listening, plug the ea phone into the ea phone jack. The inte nai
speake will be disconnected.
То ope ate the t ansceive with a 50 ohm exte nal antenna, plug the coaxial
connecto into the exte nal antenna jack and emove, if installed, the RA1608
ubbe antenna.
ACCESSORY JACK
The 7-pin DIN standa d accesso y jack has the following inte nai connections:
