GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Your SOMMERKAMP TS-5680 transce ver has been désgnée! for cont nous heavy
duty portable appl cat on. It can be operated w th external antenna, power supply,
headset, telephoneset ncorporat ng automat c vo ce operated transm t/rece ve
sw tch ng, short type rubber antenna, external sélect ve call ng w th automat c
answerback and many more.
GENERAL:
The transce ver s des gned to operate w th nternal dry cells or rechargeable
n ckel-cadm um batter es such as N500AA set w th the 12360 charger, or w th
an external 12V DC power supply such as NT30, or w th an automob le battery.
To prevent exces ve battery dra n, th s transce ver has a stand-by sw tch n
comb nat on w th the operate and call sw tch, wh ch by a t m ng c rcu t and
a sw tch ng trans stor sw tches the rece ver on for 2 seconds and off for 10
seconds. Th s dev ce extends the battery l fe 6 t mes longer compared w th
cont nous squelched stand-by operat on. It s necessary, however, for a call ng
stat on to call by m n mum 10-15 seconds before rece pt on and contact s
poss ble.
RECEIVER SECTION:
The rece ver sect on s des gned to rece ve ampl tude modulated s gna s(AM/A3)
n the 26.965 to 27.855 MHz. (11 meter) c t zens band. The unque comb nat on
of low no se F eld Effect Trans stors (FET), double convers on, a comb nat on
of mechan cal ceram c, and L/C f lters, fully automat c nose l m ter and a h f
qual ty speaker ampl f er .w ll g ve you exceptjonal récept on qual ty n th s
f ne p ece of equ pment.
In add t on, the above comb nat on of the latest technology prov des you w th
a sens t v ty and unwanted s gnal reject on and no se suppress on ava fable
prev ously only n space and m l tary commun cat on equpment.
The power supply of the rece ver sect on s stab l zed by an extreme sharp
cut-off Zener dode controlled sér és stab l zer .to obta n the h gh sens t v ty
and unwanted s gna reject on. The fully automat c sér és gâte nose l m ter,
wh ch v rtually cuts off the audo output dur ng gn t on no se puses, s de-
featable to make even the weakest s gnal aud ble wh ch otherw se would be
eut off by the threshold level of the ANL sw tch ng dode.
The hgh squelch sens t v ty s ach eved by us ng a seperate squelch detector
and sw tch ng c rcu t w th a carefully balanced hystérés s. The transformerless
h f qual ty audo power ampl f er w ll dr ve any load between 32 ohms and
ndef n n te such as nterna speaker/m crophone comb nat on or external speaker/
m crophone or headset comb nat ons hav ng the above mpédances.
The meter nd cates the f eld strength dur ng récepton of a s gnal, and w thout
s gnal the battery cond t on.

TRANSMITTER &. MODULATOR SECTION:
The transm tter sect on s des gned for cont nous heavy duty transm ss on of
ampl tude modulated (AM/A3) s gna s n the 26.965 to 27.855 MHz. (11 meter)
c t zens band.
The transm tter cons sts of a Phase Locked Loop c rcu t and one-crystal
controlled osc llator, of wh ch output s synthes zed n a dass B m xer, followed
by a double tuned f lter, dass ABI buffers, and a h ghly eff c ent collector-
modulated dass C dr ver and power output stage, coupled by sér es and p -
match ng f lters to the antenna jack and v a a load ng co l to the rod antenna.
The modulator cons sts of an nput aud o f lter, ntegrated pre-and power
ampl f er and modulat on transformer. Th s g ves you the lowest poss ble
modulat on d stort on and up to 100% modulat on. The nput s des gned for 1
to 10K ohm dynam e m crophone or 32 ohm speaker/m crophone comb nat on
w th a 1K ohm res stor n sér és.
RECEIVE/TRANSMIT SWITCHING:
The rece ve/transm t sw tch ng s done by a s ngle pole, s ngle throw m cro
sw tch w th a l fe t me of about 5 m ll on operat ons and a comb nat on of
NPN and PNP sw tch ng trans stors wh ch also funct on n the rece ve mode
as sér és voltage stab l zer. For remote sw tch ng, a parallel contact s prov ded
at the accessory jack.
METER:
The comb nat on meter prov des you w th the follow ng funct ons:
Dur ng rece ve mode....... t nd cates the ncom ng sgnal strength, and w thout
ncom ng s gna s the battery cond t on.
Dur ng transm t mode--- t nd cates the output power.
CHANNEL DISPLAY
The channel n operat on сап be read on the d g tal channel readout d splay
above the channel select ng knob.
When the D splay-Normal-Call sw tch s center sw tched, the d g tal channel
readout w ll nd cate the number for a few second n order to save battery
consumpt on. However, when the D splay-Normal-Call sw tch frontward sw tched,
the channel readout w ll stay always nd cat ng the channel number n operat on.
Th s pos t on w ll ma nly be used for check ng the channel number n use.

POWER SUPPLY:
Th s transce ver s des gned to operate w th a nomnal 12V DC power supply
such as the nternal dry cells or n ckel-cadm um rechargeable batter es or an
external power supply del ver ng at least 1.5 amperes. The equ pment w ll
operate from 10-16V DC w thout any damage.
UNPACKING AND CHECKOUT
Unpack the carton carefulIy and check for exter or damages.
Check that the volume control s n the OFF pos t on, the squelch control n
the ANL-OFF pos t on and the D splay-Normal-Call sw tch n center pos t on.
Press the dent of the battery compartment l d and pull t out toward the bottom.
L ft out the battery holder and nsert 8 dry cells nto the holder as nd cated,
® to ф, © to © pole. Leave the 2dummy batter es n the holder as they are.
If you use rechargeable batter es, nsert 10 p èces of them n the same manner
as above but remove the dummy batter es.
Snap the battery holder onto the snap connector prov ded and re nsert the
holder nto the compartment.
Replace the compartment l d by nsert ng t stra ght from the bottom up unt l
t snaps n r ghtly.
Then sw tch the transce ver ON by rotat ng the volume control clockw se and
check that the meter needle moves nto the red f eld. If the meter needle does
not move, sw tch OFF mmed ately and check f the D splay-Normal-Call sw tch
s n the center pos t on. If th s s the case, open the battery compartment
to remove the battery holder to ensure that the batter es are correctly n-
serted.
Now turn the volume control unt l no se s heard from the speaker. Then extend
the rod antenna to the füll length.

Rotate the channel selector step by step CHI to CH40 both for LO & HI CH.
and check that some nose and/or sgnal s heard on each channel.
Push the push-to-talk (PTT) sw tch and observe the meter needle. Itshall move
nto the red f eld. Now wh stle nto the speaker/m crophone. The needle shall
move a l ttle. The same appl es wh le press ng and releas ng the call sw tch
between operate and cal .
Repeat th s check on each channel from 1 to 40. Th s complétés the Checkout.
OPERATION
Extend the rod antenna competely and sw tch the transce ver ON by rotat ng
the volume cont'fol clockw se.
Rotate the channel sw tch to the des red channel.
Adjust the volume control to a comfortable level.
Press the PTTsw tch and talk w th a normal vo ce nto the speaker/m crophone
from a d stance of 5-10 cm. After complet ng your transm ss on, release the
PTT sw tch, and the transce ver s ready for récept on. Always remember
that your oppos te party cannot hear you wh le he s transm tt ng.
Adjust the squelch control so that the background no se just d sappears dur ng
non-transm tt ng per ods of your oppos te party.
To answer the rece ved call, push the PTT sw tch and talk nto the speaker/
m crophone.
To rece ve weak s gna s, turn the squelch control fully counter-clockw se so
that the ANL s sw tched OFF.
To sw tch the transce ver OFF, turn the volume control fully counter-clockw se
unt l a cl ck s heard and the meter needle moves nto the black f eld.
Important:
If you w ll not operate the transce ver for a long t me, remove the batter es
from the equ pment so that they w ll not corrode and damage the transce ver.
The same appl es f you use the transce ver cont nously w th an external power
supply.

ACCESSORI ES
To nstall N500AA rechargeable n ckel-cadm um batter es, follow the nstruct ons
under the Chapter UNPACKING AND CHECKOUT of th s manuał.
Charge the N500AA n ckel-cadm um batter es by plugg ng the 1236 charger nto
the charger jack. Charge for 14 hours. It s not poss ble to operate the
transce ver dur ng chargng.
To use the transce ver w th the NT30AC power supply,plug t nto the external
power jack. For us ng a d fferent power supply, t s recommended to select a
low r pple, stab l zed supply, del ver ng at lest 1 ampere at 12V w th a max mum
output voltage of 16V.
To connect the transce ver to a 12V automob le battery, use an 1 ampere fuse
n sér és w th the pos t ve w re.
Solder the pos t ve w re to the center of the external power plug and the
negat ve w re to ts f n.
In case you use the transce ver w th the RA1608 rubber antenna, screw out the
telescop c antenna and replace t w th the rubber antenna.
For pr vate sten ng, plug the earphone nto the earphone jack. The nterna
speaker w ll be d sconnected.
То operate the transce ver w th a 50 ohm external antenna, plug the coax al
connector nto the external antenna jack and remove, f nstalled, the RA1608
rubber antenna.
MICROPHONE JACK
The 7-p n DIN standard accessory jack has the follow ng nterna connect ons:

3. Aud o output (Z 8 ohm-10K ohm)
4. M crophone nput (Z 600-10K ohm)
5. Interna m crophone nput (Z 1K ohm)
6. +12V for VOX un t etc.
