You will find inf o rmation on us ing each lens in t his manu_al. Precautions
common to lenses, s uch as not es on use will be found in "Precautions
before using " on a se parate sheet. Be s ure to read both docum en ts before
using the len s.
This manual is for use with several different lenses.
Thi s l ens is designed for A-mount, which call be u se d on Sony a cameras.
Notes on use
• When using this lens with an E-mo unt camera, attach a se para tel y sold Mount
Adaptor. Do not attach the lens directly to th eE-mo unt camera or you may
damage both.
• When you carry the camera with the lens attached, make sure to hold both the
camera
and the lens steadil y.
• Do not hold by any part of the lens that protrudes when zooming.
Precaution for flash use
When using a built-in ca m era flash, mak e s ur e to remove the lens hood.
With certain of lens/ fl ash combinations, th e lens may partially block the light
of
th e fl ash, res ulting in a s hado w at th e bottom of the picture.
Vignetting
When you use lens, th e corners of the scree n become darker than the center.
To r
ed uce thi s ph eno mena (called vignetting), close the aperture by I to 2
stops.
Darkening atthe top of theviewfinder image
The top of the viewfinde r" im age may appear darker. Thi s is a no rmal
phenomenon cau se d by the size of the reflex mirror in the camera, and does
not affect the re corde d image.

G) Attaching/detaching the lens
To attach the lens (See illustration (D-[I].)
1 Remove the rear and front lens caps and the camera body cap.
• You can attach/detach the lens front cap in two ways, (I) and (2). 'When
you attach/detach the lens cap with the lens hood attached, use method (2).
2 Align the orange index on the lens barrel with the orange index
on the camera (mounting index), then insert the lens into the
camera mount and rotate it clockwise until it locks.
• Do not press the lens release button on the ca mera when mounting the lens.
• Do not mount the lens at an angle.
To remove the lens (See illustration (D-(gj.)
While pressing and holding the lens release button on the camera, rotate
the lens counterclockwise until it stops, then detach the lens.
[!1 Using the tripod (70·400mm F4·5.6G SSM)
When us in g a trip od, attach it to the - mounting collar of th e lens, not to th e
tripod receptacle of the camera.
To change vertiCal/horizontal position
Loosen the collar-locking knob on the tripod- mounting collar ( 1) a nd rotate the
camera either direction. The camera can be quickly switched between vertical
and horizontal positions while maintaining stability when using a tripod.
•
Bl ack indexes (collar inde xes) are located at 90° intervals on the tripod-
mounting collar. Align a black index on the tripod
-mount ing collar with the
black
ind ex (co ll ar inde x) on the lens to adjust the camera position precisely (2).
• Tighten the collar-locking knob firmly after the camera position is se t.
To detach the tripod-mounting collar from the lens
The tripod-mounting co ll ar can be detached from the lens wh en not using a
tripod.
1 Remove the lens from the camera.
• See " I!) Attaching/detaching the lens" for details.
2 Loosen the collar-locking knob(!).
3 Rotate the tripod-mounting collar toalign the red index on the tripod-
mounting collar
(co llar mounting index next to SET / RELEASE) with the
orange index on the
lens (mounting index) (3).
4 Move the tripod - mounting collar towards the lens mount and
detach the tripod-mounting collar from the lens (4).
I!J Attaching lens hood
Jt is re com mended that you use a lens hood to reduce flare and ensure
maximum imag e quality.
Align the red line on the lens hood with the red dot on the lens (Lens
hood index). Turn the hood clockwise until the red dot on the hood
meets the red dot on the lens and it clicks into place (1).
• The polarizing-filter window can be opened (2) to allow the rotation of the
polarizing filt
er (sold separately) without having to re mo ve the lens hood. Close
the window when shooting (For 70-400
mm F4-5.6 G SSM only).
• Attach the lens hood properl
y. Otherwise, the lens hood may inte rf ere wi th the
d
es ired effect or may appear in pictures.
• When storing,
turn over the lens h ood and place it onto the lens backwards.
IJZooming
Rotate the zooming ring to the desired focal length.
IiiFocusing
To set AF/MF (auto focus/manual focus) and Focus range
(AF range)
The focus mode can be swi tch ed be tw ee n AF and MF on the le ns . You can
also se lect th e focus rang e (AF range) in AF mode.
To shoot in AF mode , set the focus mode to AF both on the camera and lens,
and select the fo cus range (AF range ) on the len s. You c~n shoot in MF mode
w hen either the cam era or the lens or both are se t to MF.
To set the focus modeon the lens (See illustration 61-[I].)
Slide the focus-mode /r ange switch totheappropriate mode, AF or MF ,and to
the appropriate focus range
(AF range) when AF is selected.
• In AF, select a focus range from the following, depending on the distance to your
subject with the focus-mode/range switch.
Se tting the focus range allows for
quicker focusing. T
hi s is useful when the shooting range is limited.
- FULL: No distance limit. AF works in the entire range.
-
00-3m: AF works from 3.0m to infini ty.
• In MF, turn the focusing ring to adjust the focus while looking through the
viewfinder, etc. (See illustration 11-(g]).
To use acamera equipped with an AF/MF control button
• Press the AF/MF control button to switch AF to MF when both the camera and
lens are set to AF.
• Press the AF/MF control button to switch MF to AF when the camera is set to
MF and the lens is set to AF.
Direct manual focus (OMF)
Rotate the focusing ring to set correct DMF when the focus is locked in AF-A
(automatic a uto focus) or AF-S (single-s hot auto focus).
• DMF is not available in the following cases:
-When the image
is out of focus
-When AF-C (continuous auto focus)
is selected
-When the focus
is confir med for the second photo during continuous
recording in AF-A
Shooting at infinity in MF
The focusing mechanism turns slightly past infinity to provide accurate focusing
under various operating temperatures. Always confirm the image sharpness
through the viewfinder, etc., especially when the lens is fo cused near infinity.
Focus-hold button (See illustration 61-@J.)
While the focus- hold button is pressed, auto focus function is suspended
and the focus isfixed for shooting (This lens ha s3 focus-hold buttons(for
70 -400mm F4-5.6 G SSM only).).
• The function of the focus-hold button can be changed on cameras with custom
function
ca pability. Refer to the camera manuals for details.
On teleconverters (70-400mm F4-S.6 G SSM)
You can use the 1.4X Teleconverter (SALI4TC) and 2X Tel eco n verte r
(SAL20TC ) in MF mode. Inthis case, focus manually while monitoring the
image in the viewfi nde r, etc., as the focusing fun ct ion on the camera does not
work.
• Shading may appear in the viewfinder image depending on the
ca mera. This is
not abnormal. Th is shading does not affect the recorded image.

Notes on use
• Do not leave the lens exposed to the sun or a bright light source. Internal
malfunction
of the camera body and lens, or a fire may result due to the effect of
light
tOcusing . If circumstances neces sita te le aving the lens in sunlight, be s ur e to
attach the
lens caps.
•
Be careful not to subject the lens/teleconverter to me chanical shock while
attaching it.
• Always place the lens caps on the lens/teleconverter when storing.
•
Do not keep the lens/teleconverter in a very humid place for a long period of
time to prevent mold.
• Do not touch the
len s con tact s. Ifdirt, etc., gets on the lens contacts, it may
interfere or prevent the sending and receiving
of signals between the lens and the
camera, resulting
in operational malfunction.
Condensation
Ifyour lens is brought directly from a cold place to a warm place,
co
nd ensation may appear on the len s. To avoid thi s, place the lens in a plastic
bag
or something similar. When the air temperature inside the bag reaches
the surrounding temperature, take the lens out.
Cleaning the lens
• Do not touch the surface of the lens directly.
• Ifthe lens
gets dirty, brush off dust with a lens blower and wipe with a soft, dean
cloth
(C leaning Cloth is recommended).
•
Do not u se any organic solvent, such as thinner or benzine, to clean the lens or
the camera cone.
