INFORMATION
This equipment has been tested and found to comply
with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to

SAFETY NOTES ON THE UNIT
WARNING
•Do not use headphones/earphones while driving,
cycling, or operating a motorized vehicle. It may
create a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas. It
can also be potentially dangerous to play your
headphones/earphones at high volume while
walking, especially at pedestrian crossings. You
should exercise extreme caution or discontinue use in
potentially hazardous situations.
CAUTION
•Do not use headphones/earphones at high volume.
Hearing experts advise against continuous, loud and
extended play. If you experience a ringing in your
ears, reduce volume or discontinue use.
•Keep the volume at a moderate level. This will allow
you to hear outside sounds and to be considerate to
the people around you.

To avoid battery leakage, fire, damage, explosion, etc.,
follow the descriptions below.
DANGER
•Do not carry dry batteries with coins or other metallic
objects. It can generate heat if the positive and
negative terminals of the batteries are accidentally
contacted by a metallic object.

•Do not charge a dry battery.
•Check the ]and }on the batteries, and be sure to
insert them like the illustration in this manual.
CAUTION
• When you are not going to use your Walkman for a
long time, remove the batteries to prevent damage
from battery leakage and corrosion.

Troubleshooting
The volume cannot be turned up.
•If “ ” appears for AVLS display, press SET so
that “ ”disappears.
The sound is unstable or no audio.
•Insert two size AA (R6) batteries properly.
•Replace all batteries if they are weak.
The display shows incorrect
information.
•The display may show incorrect information or
the preset stations may not be recalled correctly
when you use the unit for the first time, or
when you have left the unit without batteries
for a long time. In these cases, remove the
batteries, and wait until the display disappears.
Then insert batteries and turn the unit on again.
The preset stations will be canceled. Reset these
functions again.
Poor tape playback quality.
•Clean the headphones/earphones plug.
•Dirty head. Clean the head and tape path with
a cotton swab slightly moistened with cleaning
fluid or alcohol.
The cassette holder cannot be opened.
•Open the buckle and then the rubber cap. Then
you can open the cassette holder. Once the
cassette holder is open, remember to close the
rubber cap to prevent intrusion of water.
Precautions
•Do not drop the unit or give a shock to the unit, or it
may cause a malfunction.
•Do not leave the unit in a location near heat sources,
or in a place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust
or sand, moisture, rain, mechanical shock, or in a car
with its windows closed.
•Do not wind the headphones/earphones cord around
the unit. The buttons may be kept pressed, causing
unnecessary battery usage.
•The LCD display may become hard to see or slow
down when using the unit at high temperatures
(above 40°C/104°F) or at low temperatures (below
0°C/32°F). At room temperature, the display will
return to its normal operating condition.
•If the unit has not been used for a long time, set it in
the playback mode to warm it up for a few minutes
before inserting a cassette.
•Do not use cassettes longer than 90 minutes except for
long continuous playback.
•For cleaning the case, use a soft cloth slightly
moistened with mild detergent solution. Do not use
alcohol, benzine or thinner.
On water resistance
•Before opening or closing the cassette holder, be sure
to wipe off water, dust or sand on the exterior of the
Walkman. (The Walkman is not water-resistant with
the cassette holder open.)
•Since water in the headphones/earphones jack may
cause rust, cover it with the attached rubber cap when
the headphones/earphones are not in use.
•Since the Walkman is airtight, you may not be able to
open the cassette holder because of sudden change in
air pressure inside the Walkman which happens after
being transported on a plane or moving from a warm
place to a cold place. To open the cassette holder, see
“Troubleshooting”.
•The supplied headphones/earphones are not meant
to be immersed in water or come in continuous
contact with water. If they are accidentally dropped
into water or get wet, dry them with a soft cloth.
Never use an electric hair dryer.
•If the Walkman or the headphones/earphones are
immersed in salt water, be sure to wash them in non-
running fresh water. Never wash them under running
water, and never use soap or detergent.
•Any sand or dust on the rubber packing will prevent
the cassette holder from closing tightly, and water
may leak in. Brush off the dust once in a while.
•We recommend the packing to be changed every year.
Replacement packing is available at an authorized
Sony Service Facility.

Notes
•The BATT indicator dims when the batteries become
weak or exhausted. Replace them with new ones.
•Replace both batteries while the E indication comes on
the display, or all the memories will be canceled.
•When replacing batteries, replace both batteries within
30 seconds; otherwise all the memories will be
canceled.
•The battery life may shorten depending on the
operation of the unit.
•For maximum performance we recommend that you
use alkaline batteries.
To use the belt clip
When Using Headphones/earphones
Wear the “L” marked side to the left ear and the “R”
marked side to the right ear.

Listening to the radio
1Press RADIO ON/OFF.
2Press BAND repeatedly to select FM or
AM.
3Press TUNING +/– to tune in to the
station you want.
To turn off the radio
Press RADIO ON/OFF.
To tune the station quickly
Hold down TUNING +/– in step 3. The frequency
digits change quickly. When you release the button,
scanning begins and automatically stops when it
receives a station.
Playing a tape
1Open the cassette holder and insert a
cassette. Then close the cassette holder
and lock the buckle.
2Press MENU repeatedly to set the cursor
to TAPE in the display.
Then press SET to select the tape type.
No message: normal (TYPE I)
METAL: CrO2(TYPE II) or metal (TYPE
IV)
Presetting radio
stations
You can store radio stations into the unit’s memory.
You can preset up to 16 radio stations for FM and 8
stations for AM.
To tune in to and store stations
automatically (Auto Memory Scanning
function)
1Press RADIO ON/OFF.
2Press BAND repeatedly to select FM or AM.
3Press ENTER until “A” appears in the display.
The Walkman starts searching and storing
stations.
When a station is stored, the preset number
appears.
Note
If some stations are already stored, the new stations
replace the old ones.
To improve broadcast reception
For FM, extend the headphones/earphones cord or
adjust FM MODE (Press MENU repeatedly to set
the cursor to FM MODE in the display, then press
SET to choose from “DX” or “LOCAL”, or “MONO”
or “ST”).
For AM, reorient the unit itself.
Tip
While listening to the radio, you can switch to the tape
by pressing ((play), 0or ).
Note
If the broadcast becomes noisy when a cassette with a
metallic shell or label is inserted, remove the cassette.

Tips
•To switch the playback side, press œ.
•To emphasize deep bass sound, press MENU
repeatedly to set the cursor to MEGA BASS in the
display. Then, press SET to show “ON”.
To cancel the MEGA BASS function, press SET so that
“ON” disappears.
Notes
•When you turn on AVLS:
- the MEGA BASS effect is reduced.
- turn down the volume if the bass-boosted sound
becomes distorted or unstable.
•Do not open the cassette holder while the tape is
running.
To store stations manually (Manual
Memory function)
You can preset the stations in any order.
1Press RADIO ON/OFF.
2Press BAND repeatedly to select FM or AM.
3Press ENTER.
The frequency digits and a preset number flash in
the display.
4While the frequency digits and the preset number
are flashing, tune in to a station you wish to store
using TUNING+/–, and select a preset number
using PRESET+/–.
5While the frequency digits and the preset number
are flashing, press ENTER.
6Tune in to a station using PRESET+/–.
Notes
•If you cannot complete step 3 or 4 while the
indications are flashing, repeat from step 2.
•If a station is already stored, the new station replaces
the old one.

To cancel the stored station
Follow the procedure above and in step 3, instead of
tuning in to a station, press and hold TUNING+/–
until “- - - -” is displayed. Press ENTER while
“- - - -” is flashing.
To play the preset radio stations
Press BAND to select the band, and then tune in to a
station using PRESET +/–.
Receiving stations
outside your country
(excluding models for
Europe and Saudi Arabia)
The frequency range differs depending on the area
(see the chart “Area indication and frequency range”).
If you listen to the radio in an area of different
frequency range, change the area indication.
1Press RADIO ON/OFF to turn on the radio.
2Press ENTER.
3Press and hold BAND until the area indication
flashes in the display.
4Press BAND repeatedly to select the following area
“Eur”, “JPn” or “USA” and press ENTER.
5Tune in to and store stations as necessary following
the procedure of the “Listening to the radio” and
“Presetting radio stations”.
Note
If you change the frequency range, all the preset stations
will be canceled.

Press MENU repeatedly to set the cursor to AVLS in
the display. Then press SET to show “ ”. The
maximum volume is kept down to protect your ears,
even if you turn the volume up. To cancel the AVLS
function, press SET so that “ ” disappears.
