Before you get started
l Turn off the power to all components before making any connections.
l Do not connect the AC power cord until all of the connections arecompleted.
l Be sureto make.connections firmly to avoid hum and noise.
l When connecting an audio/video cord, be sureto match the color-coded pins to the appropriatejacks on
the components: yellow (video) to yellow; white (left, audio) to white; andred (right, audio) to red.
l When you connect optical digital cords, insert the cord plugs straight in until they click into place.
- Do not bend or tie the optical digital cord.

Hooking Up the Components

Connectthe digital outputjacks of your DVD player andsatellitetuner (etc.)to thereceiver’s digital
inputjacks to bring themulti channelsurroundsoundof amovie theaterinto your home.To fully
enjoy multi channelsurroundsound,five speakers(two front speakers,two surroundspeakers,anda
centerspeaker)andasubwoofer arerequired.You canalsoconnectanLD playerwith anRF OUT
jack via anRF demodulator,like the SonyMOD-RF1 (not supplied).
Notes
* You cannot connect an LD player’s DOLBY DIGITAL RF OUT jack directly to this unit’s digital input jack\.
You must first convert the RF signal to either an optical or coaxial digital signal. For details, see
“Troubleshooting” on page 48.
* All the OPTICAL and COAXIAL jacks are compatible with 96 kHz. 48 kHz. 44. I kHr and 32 kHz sampling
frequcncie\.

HT-6500DP and HT-5500D only
Although this receiver incorporates a multi channel decoder, it is also equipped with multi channel
input jacks. These connections allow you to enjoy multi channel software encoded in formats other
than Dolby Digital and DTS. If your DVD player is equipped with multi channel output jacks, you E
can connect them directly to the receiver to enjoy the sound of the DVD player’s multi channel 2
decoder. Alternatively, the multi channel input jacks can be used to connect an external multi channel 5
decoder. 9
To fully enjoy multi channel surround sound, five speakers (two front speakers, two surround
speakers, and a center speaker) and a sub woofer are required. Refer to the operating instructions ti
supplied with your DVD player, multi channel decoder, etc., for details on the multi channel s
hookups. B

cord
Before connecting the AC power cord of this
receiver to a wall outlet, connect the speaker
system to the receiver (page ~3).
Connect the AC power cord(s) of your audio/
video components to a wall outlet.

Tip
To prevent speaker vibration or movement while
listening, attach the supplied foot pads at the bottom
of the speakers.
Notes
l Connect the long speaker connecting cords to the
surround speaker terminals and the short speaker
connecting cords to the front and center speaker
terminals.
l Twist the stripped ends of the speaker cords about
2/3 inch. Be sure to match the speaker cord to the
appropriate terminal on the components: + to + and
to -_ If the cords are reversed, the sound will be
distorted and will lack bass.
- If you use speakers with low maximum input rating,
adjust the volume carefully to avoid excessive
output on the speakers.
To avoid short-circuiting the
speakers
Short-circuiting of the speakersmay damage
thereceiver.To preventthis, makesureto take
thefollowing precautionswhenconnectingthe
speakers.
Make sure the stripped ends of each
speaker cord does not touch another
speaker terminal, the stripped end of
another speaker cord, or the metal parts of
the receiver.
Examples of poor conditions of the
speaker cord
Stripped speaker cord is touching another
speaker terminal.
Stripped cords are touching each other
due to excessive removal of insulation.
After connecting all the components,
speakers, and AC power cord, output
a test tone to check that all the
speakers are connected correctly.
For details on outputting a test tone,
see page 20.
If no soundis heardfrom a speakerwhile
outputting atesttoneor atesttoneis output
from aspeakerother thanthe onewhosename
is currently displayedon thereceiver,the
speakermaybe short-circuited.If this happens,
checkthe speakerconnectionagain.
To avoid damaging your
speakers
Make surethat you turn down thevolume
beforeyou turn off thereceiver.When you turn
onthereceiver,thevolume remainsatthe level
you turn off thereceiver.

Onceyou havehookedup the speakersand
turnedon thepower, clearthe receiver’s
memory.Then specify the speakerparameters
(size,position, etc.) andperform anyother
initial setupoperationsnecessaryfor your
system.
Tip
To check the audio outputduringsettings(tosetup
whileoutputting the sound), check the connection
(page 21).
Clearing the receiver’s
memory
Before usingyour receiverfor the first time, or
when you want to clearthereceiver’s memory,
do thefollowing.
This procedureis not necessaryif the
demonstrationactivateswhen you turn on the
power.
1 Turn off the receiver.
2 Hold down I/C! for 5 seconds.
The demonstrationstarts(page4) andall of
thefollowing items areresetor cleared:
All presetstationsareresetor cleared.
All soundfield parametersareresetto
their factory settings.
All index names(of presetstationsand
programsources)arecleared.
All SET UP parametersareresetto
their factory settings.
The soundfield memorizedfor each
programsourceandpresetstationsare
cleared.
The mastervolume is setto VOL MIN.
Performing initial setup
operations
Before usingyour receiverfor thefirst time,
adjustSET UP parameterssothat thereceiver
correspondto your system.For the adjustable
parameters,seethetable onpage54. Seepages
15-20 for speakersettingsandpages35-36 for
other settings.
For the bestpossiblesurroundsound,all
speakersshouldbethe samedistancefrom the
listening position (Q).
However, thereceiverletsyou placethe center
speakerup to 5 feet closer(0) andthe
surroundspeakersup to 15feet closer(@) to
the listening position.
The front speakerscanbeplacedfrom 3 to 40
feet from the listening position (0).
You canplacethe surroundspeakerseither
behindyou or to the side,dependingon the
shapeof your room (etc.).

system.

Thesettingfor Micro Satellite Speaker(MICRO SP.)
hasbeenprogrammedto optimize the soundbalance.
If you useSony’s Micro SatelliteSpeakers,select
MICRO SP.
Caution
Whenyou useMicro Satellite Speakersandthe
speakersizeis setto “LARGE”, you may not obtain
thecorrect soundstage.The speakermay alsobe
damagedathigh volumeposition.
Specifying the speaker
parameters
1 Press SET UP.
2 Press MENU < or MENU > to select
the parameter you want to adjust.
3 Press MENU + or MENU -to select the
setting you want.
The setting is enteredautomatically.
4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have set
all of the parameters that follow.

Tip

Likewise, thesurroundspeakerscannot besetfarthet
awayfrom the listening position thanthefront
speakers.And they canbeno morethan 15feet

This is becauseincorrect speakerplacementis not
conduciveto enjoy surroundsound.
Pleasenotethat, settingthespeakerdistancecloser
thantheactuallocation of thespeakerswill causea
delay in theoutput of thesoundfrom that speaker.In
otherwords,thespeakerwill soundlike it is farther
away.
For example,settingthecenterspeakerdistance
3-6 feetcloserthantheactualspeakerposition will
createafairly realistic sensationof being“inside” the
screen.If you cannotobtainasatisfactorysurround
effect becausethesurroundspeakersaretoo close,
settingthesurroundspeakerdistancecloser(shorter)
thanthe actualdistancewill createalargersound
stage.

Thesurroundspeakerposition parameterisdesigned
specifically for implementationof theDigital Cmema
Soundmodeswith virtual elements.
With theDigital CinemaSoundmodes,speaker
position is not ascritical asothermodes.All modes
with virtual elementsweredesignedunderthe
premisethatthesurroundspeakerwould belocated
behindthelistening position, but presentationremains
fairly consistentevenwith thesurroundspeakers
positionedat aratherwide angle.However,if the
speakersarepointing towardsthelistenerfrom the
immediateleft andright of thelistening position, the
soundfields with virtual elementswill notbe
effective unlessthesurroundspeakerpositlon
parameteris setto “PL. SIDE”.
Nevertheless,eachlisteningenvironmenthasman)
variables,like wall reflections,andyou mayobtain
betterresultsusing“PL. MID” and“PL. BEHD.” if
your speakersarelocatedhigh abovethelistening
position,evenif theyareto theimmediateleft and
right.
Therefore,althoughit mayresultin asettingcontrary
to the“Surround speakerposition” explanation,we
recommendthatyou playbackmulti channelsurround
encodedsoftwareandlisten to theeffect eachsetting
hason your listening environment.Choosethesetting
thatprovidesagoodsenseof spaciousnessandthat
bestsucceedsin forming acohesivespacebetween
thesurroundsoundfrom thesurroundspeakersand
thesoundof thefront speakers.If you arenot sure
which soundsbest,select“PL. BEHD.” andthenuse
thespeakerdistanceparameterandspeakerlevel
adjustmentsto obtainproperbalance.
Only when you use the speaker system
other than the supplied one, be sure to
set the following parameters.

l If you connect large speakersthat will
effectively reproduce bassfrequencies, select
“LARGE”. Normally, select “LARGE”.
l If the sound is distorted, or you feel a lack of
surround effects when using multi channel
surround sound, select “SMALL” to activate
the bassredirection circuitry and output the
front channel bassfrequencies from the sub

the center and surround speakersare also
automatically setto “SMALL” (unless
previously setto “NO”).

Tip
Internally, theLARGE andSMALL settingsfor each
speakerdeterminewhetheror not theinternal sound
processorwill cut thebasssignalfrom thatchannel.
Whenthebassis cut from achannel,thebass
redirectioncircuitry sendsthecorrespondingbass
frequenciesto the subwoofer or other“LARGE”
speakers.
However,sincebasssoundshaveacertainamountof
directionality, it is bestnot to cut them,if possible.
Therefore,evenwhenusingsmal1speakers,you can
setthemto “LARGE” if you wantto outputthebass
frequenciesfrom that speaker.On theotherhand,if
you areusingalargespeaker,but prefernot to have
bassfrequenciesoutput from that speaker,setit to
“SMALL”.
If theoverall soundlevel is lower thanyou prefer,set

Adjusting the speaker level
Usetheremotewhile seatedin your listening
position to adjustthelevel of eachspeaker.
Note
The receiver incorporates a new test tone with a
frequency centered at 800 Hz for easier speaker level
adjustment.
1 Press I/& to turn on the receiver.
2 Press TEST TONE on the remote.
“T. TONE” appearsin thedisplay andyou
will hearthe testtonefrom eachspeakerin
sequence.
3 Adjust the LEVEL parameters so that
the level of the test tone from each
speaker sounds the same when you are
in your main listening position.

the speakerwhoseadjustmentis performed.
4 Press TEST TONE again to turn off the
test tone.
Tip
You can adjust the level of all speakers at the same
time. Turn MASTER VOLUME on the main unit or
press MASTER VOL +/- on the remote.
Notes
* The test tone cannot be output when the receiver is
set to MULTI CH IN (HT-6500DP and HT-5500D
only).
l The adjusted value are shown in the display during
adjustment.
l Although these adjustments can also be made via
the front panel using the LEVEL menu (when the
test tone is output, the receiver switches to the
LEVEL menu automatically), we recommend you
follow the procedure described above and adjust the
speaker levels from your listening position using the
remote.
Listening to the subwoofer

First, turn down the volume on thereceiver.
The volume shouldbe setto minimum before
you beginplaying theprogrammesource.
1 Turn on the receiver and select the
programme source.
2 Press POWER on the subwoofer.
The POWER indicator on the subwoofer
lights up in green.
3 Play the programme source.
