supplied remote control unless stated otherwise.
The model and serial numbers are located on the back
of the TV. Record the serial number in the space
provided below. Refer to these numbers whenever
you call your dealer regarding this product.

NOTICE FOR CUSTOMERS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
A moulded plug complying with BS1363 is fitted to this equipment for your safety and convenience.
Should the fuse in the plug supplied need to be replaced, a 5 AMP fuse approved by ASTA or BSI
to BS 1362 (i.e. marked with or ) must be used. When an alternative type of plug is used it
should be fitted with a 5 AMP fuse, otherwise the circuit should be protected by a 5 AMP fuse at
the distribution board. If the plug supplied with this equipment has a detachable fuse cover, be sure
to attach the fuse cover after you change the fuse. Never use the plug without the fuse cover. If you
should lose the fuse cover, please contact your nearest Sony service centre.
How to replace the Fuse
Open the fuse compartment with a flat blade screwdriver, and replace the fuse.
IMPORTANT
If the plug supplied is not suitable for the socket outlet in your home, it should be cut off and an
appropriate plug fitted in accordance with the following instructions:
The wires in this mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following code:
Blue Neutral
Brown Live
As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this apparatus may not correspond with the coloured
markings identifying the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows:
The wire which is coloured blue must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter
N or coloured black. The wire which is coloured brown must be connected to the terminal which is
marked with the letter L or coloured red. Do not connect either wire to the earth terminal in the plug
which is marked by the letter E or by the safety earth symbol Ior coloured green or green and
yellow.
WARNING
• To prevent shock hazard, do not insert the plug cut off from the mains lead into a socket outlet.
This plug cannot be used and should be destroyed.
• To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not expose the unit to rain or moisture.
• Dangerously high voltages are present inside the set. Do not open the cabinet. Refer servicing
to qualified personnel only.

This set is to operate on a 220-240V AC
supply only. Take care not to connect too
many appliances to the same power socket
as this could result in fire or electric shock.
For environmental and safety reasons, it is
recommended that the TV is not left if
standby when unused. Disconnect from the
mains. However, some TVs may have
features which need the TV to be left in
standby to work correctly. The instructions
in this manual will inform you if this applies.
Never push objects of any kind into the set
as this could result in a fire or electric shock.
Never spill liquid of any kind on the set. If
any liquid or solid object does fall through,
do not operate the TV. Have it checked
immediately by qualified personnel.
Do not open the cabinet and the rear cover
of the TV. Refer to qualified service
personnel only.
To prevent fire or shock hazard, do not
expose the TV to rain or moisture.
For your own safety, do not touch any part
of the TV, power lead or aerial lead during
lightning storms.
Do not cover the ventilation openings of the
TV. For ventilation, leave a space of at least
10cm all around the set.
Never place the TV in hot, humid or
excessively dusty places. Do not install the
TV where it may be exposed to mechanical
vibrations.
Clean the screen and cabinet with a soft,
lightly dampened cloth. Do not use any type
of abrasive pad, alkaline cleaner, scouring
powder or solvent, such as alcohol or
benzine, or antistatic spray. As a safety
precaution, unplug the TV before cleaning it.
Pull out the power lead by the plug. Do not
pull on the power lead itself.
Take care not to place heavy objects on the
power lead as this could result in damage.
We recommend you wind any excess lead
around the holders provided on the rear of
the TV.
Unplug the power lead before moving the
TV. Avoid uneven surfaces, quick steps or
excessive force. If the set has been
dropped or damaged, have it checked
immediately by qualified service personnel.
Do not cover the ventilation openings of the
TV with items such as curtains or
newspapers etc.
Do not place any objects on the TV. To
prevent fire, keep inflammable objects or
naked lights (e.g. candles) away from the TV.
Place the TV on a secure stable stand. Never
attempt to move the TV and stand together -
always move the TV and stand separately.
Do not place the TV on its side or face up. Do
not allow children to climb on to it.
Due to the unique floating design of this TV, highly recommend you use their
designated stand SU-28DX50 for KD-28DX50U and SU-32DX50 for KD-32DX50U.

1. Connect the TV plug to your mains socket
(220 - 240V AV, 50Hz)
2. Push in the On/Off button (labelled !) on the front
of the TV.
z If the red standby mode indicator on the front of the TV is
lit, press the TV I/1button on the remote control to switch
on the set. Please be patient as the picture may take a
few moments to appear on the TV screen.

Connecting an aerial only
1. Connect your aerial lead to the socket labelled 1
on the rear of the TV.
2. Connect the supplied RF lead from the socket
labelled on the rear of the TV to the socket
labelled IN* on your VCR.
3. Connect an RF lead from the socket labelled OUT*
on your VCR to the socket labelled 2on the rear
of the TV.
4. Connect a fully wired 21-pin scart lead from the
socket labelled i2/ron the rear of the TV to the
socket labelled TV* on your VCR**
5. Insert a pre-recorded tape into the VCR and press
the ‘PLAY’ button. This enables the TV to locate
and store the video channel during the
‘Automatically tuning the TV’ procedure.
z*Socket names may vary depending on make and model
of VCR. Refer to your VCR instruction manual for details.
**If your VCR does not have a scart socket follow the
connecting instructions above ignoring the scart lead
connection.
1. Connect your aerial lead to the socket labelled 1
on the rear of the TV.
2. Connect the supplied RF lead from the sockets
labelled and 2on the rear of the TV.

1. When you switch on the TV for the first time a menu appears on the
screen asking you to check if the picture is slanted. (Sometimes the
Earth’s natural magnetism can cause the screen to look slanted.)
a) If no correction is required, press the Vor vbutton to highlight ‘Not
necessary’. Press the OK button to continue.
b) If some correction is required, press the Vor vbutton to highlight
‘Adjust now’. Press the OK button to continue. Press the Vor vbutton
to correct the slant. Press the OK button to store.
2. The autotune prompt appears. Press the OK button to select ‘Yes’. The
autotune procedure begins.
The digital autotune display appears on screen and the TV starts to
search for all the available digital channels. This may take some time,
please be patient and do not press any buttons on the TV or remote
control.
If no digital or analogue channels are found, a message appears asking
you to confirm that the aerial is connected correctly. Check all the aerial
connections and press the OK button to start the autotune procedure
again.
When the digital autotune is complete, the analogue autotune starts to
search for all the available analogue channels.
Once all available digital and analogue channels have been stored, the
TV returns to normal operation, displaying the digital channel stored on
channel number 1. If no digital channels are found, the analogue channel
stored on channel 1 is displayed.

1. Press the DIGITAL/abutton to switch between digital and analogue
mode.
In digital mode, an information banner appears briefly on screen when
the channel is changed.
In analogue mode, the channel number appears in green lettering when
the channel is changed.

This TV has three picture mode settings, ‘Live’, ‘Movie’and ‘Personal’. ‘Live’and
‘Movie’are preset and only the ‘Contrast’setting can be adjusted. ‘Personal’mode
however, also allows you to adjust the ‘Brightness’, ‘Colour’and ‘Sharpness’
settings.
This TV has four sound mode settings, ‘Personal’, ‘Rock*, ‘Pop, and ‘Jazz’.
1. Press the MENU button on the remote control to display the TV menu
system on the TV screen.
2. Press the bbutton to enter the ‘Picture Adjustment’menu.
3. The ‘Mode’option is highlighted. Press the bbutton.
4. Press the Vor vbutton to highlight ‘Live’, ‘Movie’or ‘Personal’. Press the
OK button to confirm.
5. a) If you have selected ‘Live’ or ‘Movie’:
Go to step 6.
b) If you have selected ‘Personal’:
You can now adjust the ‘Brightness’, ‘Colour’and ‘Sharpness’settings.
(Sharpness is not adjustable in digital mode).
Press the Vor vbutton to highlight ‘Brightness’, ‘Colour’or ‘Sharpness’.
Press the bbutton. Press the Bor bbutton to adjust the setting. Press
the OK button to store.
6. Press the MENU button to exit the TV menu system and return to normal
TV operation.

6Numbered buttons
In TV mode: Press to select the required channel number. For channel
numbers 10 and above, enter the second digit within two seconds.
In analogue text mode: Press to enter the three digital page number. Refer
to page 14.
7/ -INFO/Text Reveal button
In digital TV mode: Press to access the Info menu. Refer to page 13.
In analogue TV mode: Press to display information such as current channel
number and screen mode.
In analogue text mode: Press to reveal concealed information (e.g. answers
to a quiz). Refer to page 14.
8- Previous channel button
In TV mode: Press to return to the previous channel watched (provided that
the channel was watched for more than five seconds).
9Coloured buttons
In digital menu systems: Press to select the options at the bottom of the
screen in the Info, Main, Channel Index and EPG digital menus.
In analogue text mode: Press to use Fastext. Refer to page 14.
q; - EPG button
In digital TV mode: Press to access the Digital Electronic Programme Guide
(EPG). Refer to page 16.

In digital TV mode: Press to access digital text. Refer to page 13.

Everyday use This section explains the various functions and operations used during everyday
viewing. Most operations can be done using the remote control.
1. Press the On/Off button (labelled !) on the front of the TV to switch
on the TV.
When the TV is in standby mode (the 1indicator on the TV is lit red),
press the TV I/1button on the remote control to switch on the TV.
2. Press the PROG+/- buttons on the TV or press the PROG+/- or
Numbered buttons on the remote control to select a TV channel.
When selecting double digit numbers using the Numbered buttons, enter
the second digit within two seconds.
3. Press the 2+/- buttons on the TV or on the remote control to adjust the
volume.

Please note, most equipment connected by scart lead, when activated, will send
a signal to the TV. The TV will automatically display the picture for you.

Screen Mode The picture that the TV receives may be in one of several formats (e.g. conventional
4:3 format, 16:9 widescreen format etc.). You can alter the TV screen mode
manually to suit the broadcast you are watching. (Alternatively, set the ‘Auto
Format’menu option to ‘On’. The TV will automatically select the best mode to suit
the broadcast. Refer to page 25 for details.)
1. Press the button repeatedly to select ‘Wide’, ‘Zoom’, ‘14:9’, ‘4:3’or
‘Smart’.
Wide
Use this mode for watching widescreen broadcasts (e.g. Digital / Satellite TV,
DVD).
Zoom
Use this mode for watching cinemascopic (letter box format) broadcasts (e.g.
movies in letter box format). Due to the range of cinemascopic formats available,
black areas may be visible on the TV screen. In ‘Zoom’mode, parts of the top
and bottom of the picture may be cut off. Press the Vor vbutton to adjust the
position of the picture on the TV screen (e.g. to read subtitles).
14:9
Use this mode for watching 14:9 broadcasts with the picture displayed in the
correct proportions. As a result, black areas are visible on the TV screen. In
‘14:9’mode, parts of the top and bottom of the picture may be cut off. Press the
Vor vbutton to adjust the position of the picture on the TV screen (e.g. to read
subtitles).

4:3
Use this mode for watching conventional 4:3 broadcasts (e.g. non widescreen
TV) with the picture displayed in the correct proportions. As a result, black areas
are visible on the TV screen.
Smart
This mode creates an imitation widescreen effect for conventional 4:3
broadcasts. The 4:3 picture is stretched to fill the TV screen, eliminating any
black areas. In ‘Smart’mode, parts of the top and bottom of the picture may be
cut off. Press the Vor vbutton to adjust the position of the picture on the TV
screen (e.g. to read subtitles).

Digital text
Many broadcasters now provide a digital text service. Digital text services offer all
the familiar information that analogue (conventional) text services provide but with
the look and feel of a graphically rich website.
The appearance, content and navigation methods of all digital text services are
decided by the broadcaster. For example, digital text from the BBC may look
different from digital text from ITV. Most of the digital text services currently
available use simple navigation methods based on the following buttons:
Viewing digital text
There are two ways to view digital text, either while watching a digital channel or by
accessing a dedicated digital text channel.
a) Digital text from digital channels
(depending on availability of service)
This form of digital text is accessed the same way as analogue text.
b) Digital text from a dedicated digital text channel
(depending on availability of service)
Some broadcasters provide a separate channel for accessing their digital text
service.
To Press
Load or exit digital text... /button.
Move around the screen... V, v, Bor b buttons.
Select items on screen... OK and Numbered buttons.
Access shortcuts... Coloured buttons.
1. Select a digital channel which provides a text service.
2. Press the /button to access the digital text service.
3. Follow the on screen instructions.

Analogue text
Most analogue TV channels broadcast a text service. The index page (usually page
100) provides information on how to use the service. Please ensure that you are
receiving a good signal, or some text errors may occur.
Viewing analogue text
Fastext
Fastext allows you to access pages quickly and easily. When Fastext is available,
four coloured items appear at the bottom of the text page. Press the corresponding
Coloured button on the remote control to access the page.
1. Select an analogue channel that provides a text service.
2. Press the /button to access the text service.
3. To Press
Select a page... Numbered buttons. (Press the
PROG +/- buttons to display the
previous or next page).
Superimpose the text over the TV
picture (mix mode)...
/button. Press again to exit the
text service.
Hold a page... / button. Press again to
cancel.
Reveal hidden information... / button.
4. Press the DIGITAL/abutton to return to normal TV operation.

The Channel Index
menu The Channel Index menu provides a list of all the available digital channels, along
with information about the programmes currently being broadcast. The current
channel is previewed in the top right corner of the screen with it’s channel name and
number displayed below it.
The Channel Index menu is only available in digital mode.
The Category pop-up list
The Category pop-up list allows you to display channels in the Channel Index menu
by category.
The categories available include:
Favourite channels
This feature allows you to create a list of your favourite channels. This list is
displayed when the ‘Favourite’ category is selected in the Channel Index menu (see
above).
To add a channel to the Favourite category
With the required channel highlighted in the Channel Index menu, press the BLUE
button to add the channel to the Favourite list.
To remove a channel from the Favourite category
Access the Category pop-up list (see above). Use the Vor vbutton to highlight the
‘Favourite’ category. Press the OK button to display the ‘Favourite’ category. Use
the Vor vbutton to highlight the channel you wish to remove from the Favourite list.
Press the BLUE button to remove the channel.
1. With the TV in digital mode, press the OK button to display the Channel
Index menu.
2. To Press
Move around the menu... Vand vbuttons.
Display the previous/next six
channels in the list...
RED button (previous), GREEN

Preview a programme... OK button while highlighting a
programme*.

*If you have set a Parental Control age limit in the
Main Menu, and the programme exceeds that
limit, you will be asked to enter your PIN before
the preview is allowed. Programmes that exceed
the age limit are identified by a symbol.
Initially the PIN code is preset to 1234. Refer to
‘PIN Code’ on page 20 for more information.

The Digital Electronic
Programme Guide
(EPG)
The Digital Electronic Programme Guide allows you to:
a) view programme information for all digital channels,
b) sort programme information by category,
c) set reminders to have the TV automatically switch to a programme when it starts,
d) record programmes
The Digital Electronic Programme Guide is only available in digital mode.
The Category pop-up list
The Category pop-up list allows you to display channels in the Digital Electronic
Programme Guide by category.
The categories available include:
To add/remove a channel to/from the Favourite list
Refer to ‘To add a channel to the Favourite category’and ‘To remove a channel
from the Favourite category’on the previous page.
Recording
1. With the TV in digital mode, press the button to display the Digital
Electronic Programme Guide.

When a programme has been set to record, a
solid green bar appears under the information
box in the EPG for that programme.
*If you have set a Parental Control age limit in the
Main Menu, and the programme exceeds that
limit, you will be asked to enter your PIN before
the preview is allowed. Programmes that exceed
the age limit are identified by a symbol.

Cancelling a timed event
1. With the Digital Electronic Programme Guide on screen, press the V, v,
Band bbutton to highlight the programme you wish to display.
2. Press the OK button to display the ‘Timers’ menu.
3. Press the GREEN button to have the TV automatically display the
selected programme when the programme starts.
1. With the Digital Electronic Programme Guide on screen, press the BLUE
button to display the Timer List menu.
2. Press the RED button to display the ‘Manual Timer Record’ menu.
If you do not have a Smartlink VCR, a message is displayed reminding
you to set your VCR timer. Press the RED button to remove the message.
3. Press the Vor vbutton to select the date. Press the bbutton.
4. Press the Vor vbutton to select the start time. Press the bbutton.
5. Press the Vor vbutton to select the stop time. Press the bbutton.
6. Press the Vor vbutton to select the channel. Press the OK button to
store. The ‘Timer List’ menu is displayed.
7. Press the BLUE button to return to the EPG menu or the DIGITAL/a
button to return to normal TV operation.

button to display the Timer List menu.
2. Press the Vor vbutton to highlight the programme/event you wish to
cancel.
3. Press the YELLOW button to cancel the programme/event. Press the

The Info menu The Info menu provides information on the programmes currently being shown and
on future programmes. It also allows you to display digital subtitles and listen to the
broadcast in a different language.
The Info menu is only available in digital mode.
The Coloured buttons give you access to further options:
1. With the TV in digital mode, press the button to display the ‘Info menu’.
2. To Press

programmes...

Return to information for current
programmes...
Bbutton.
Change the TV channel... Numbered buttons.
3. Press the DIGITAL/abutton to return to normal TV operation.
RED button: Subtitles
(depending on availability)
When pressed, a pop-up menu allows you to change the
languages for the subtitles. Press the Vor vbutton to
select the language required, then press the OK button to
confirm.
GREEN button: Audio
(depending on availability)
When pressed, a pop-up menu allows you to select the
language in which you wish to hear the broadcast. Press
the Vor vbutton to select the language required, then
press the OK button to confirm.
YELLOW button: REC/Timers
Allows you to record a programme from the Info display, or
set a programme to automatically appear on screen when
it starts. Press the B or bbutton to select future
programmes from the Info display, then press the
YELLOW button to display the ‘Timers’ pop-up menu. You
can now choose from a)Record b)Wakeup or c)Manual
a) Record** Highlight ‘Record’ and press OK to
automatically set your VCR to record the
selected programme (this will only work if
your VCR has the Smartlink facility and is
connected to the AV2 socket i2/ron
the rear of this TV).
b) Wakeup** Highlight ‘Wakeup’ and press OK if you
wish the future programme you selected
to appear on screen when transmission
begins.
c) Manual*** Highlight ‘Manual’ and press OK if you
wish the TV to output a channel to your
VCR for recording. The display shown on
the left appears. Press the Vor vbutton
to set the day of recording, then press the
bbutton to move to the start time. Repeat
this procedure to set the start and stop
times and the channel number, then
press the OK button to store and return to
the Info menu. Press the button to
remove the Info menu from the screen.
Unless you have a Smartlink VCR, you
must now set the timer recording function
of your VCR to switch on and off to
correspond with the programme you have
stored for recording.
BLUE button: Press to display the Main Menu (see next page).
**After you have programmed a recording you
can put the TV into it’s standby mode, but do not
switch off completely or the recording will be
cancelled. If you put the TV into standby mode,
the standby indicator on the front of the TV
flashes green periodically to remind you a
recording has been programmed. Once a
programme has started recording, do not change
channels or switch to analogue mode or the
recording will be cancelled.
***The ‘Manual’ feature only works if you have
connected your VCR to the AV2 socket i2/r
on the rear of the TV.
