Introduction
Welcome to the SPUDNIK line of potato handling equipment. We appreciate your decision to make our
equipment a part of your operation, and look forward to a long term partnership. We strive to put the
best quality and workmanship into each of our machines, and hope as you use your MODEL 2400
Universal Pup that you will find this to be true. This owner’s/operator’s manual has been prepared
to aid you in the safe operation and service of your universal pup.
Read this manual carefully to learn how to operate your machine safely and within the designed limits of
this machine. Failure to do so could result in personal injury and/or damage to the machine

moved from location to location.
Warranty is provided as part of the SPUDNIK EQUIPMENT COMPANY LLC service program for cus-
tomers who operate and maintain their equipment as outlined in this manual.

Foreword to the Operating Manual
This operating manual is intended to familiarize the user with the MODEL 2400 Universal Pup
and its designated use.
This operating manual contains important information on how to operate the machine safely,
properly, and efficiently. Observing the instructions in this manual will help to avoid dangers,
reduce repair costs and down-times, and to increase the reliability and service life of the
machine. Please also take note of the section “Dangers, operating errors, and exceptions from
liability.”
This manual is to be supplemented by the respective national rules and regulations concerning
accident prevention and environmental protection.
The operating manual must always be available whenever the machine is in use.
This operating manual must be read and followed by all persons involved with the machine, such
as:
 Operation, including setup, troubleshooting during operations, care, disposal of fuels
and consumables
 Maintenance (servicing, inspection, and/or repair)
 Transport
In addition to this operating manual and the relevant mandatory rules and regulations
concerning accident prevention and environmental protection of the country or region in which
the machine is being used, the generally recognized technical rules for safety and proper working
practices must also be observed.

Limited Warranty Policy for New Spudnik Machinery
Spudnik Equipment Company LLC (“Spudnik”) warrants to the original purchaser of each new Spudnik machine to be free from
defects in material and workmanship. Spudnik will repair or replace, at its option, any part covered by this warranty that is
found to be defective during the warranty period outlined below. Warranty service must be performed by an authorized dealer
or representative of Spudnik. This warranty is applicable only for the normal service life expectancy of the product or compo-
nents, as noted in the following table. Once the warranty period has begun, it cannot be stopped or interrupted.
What is included in the Spudnik Warranty:
Those items that are excluded from this warranty are as follows:
(1) any merchandise or components thereof, which, in the opinion of the company have been subject to: (a) Rock chip dam-
age and other abuse to painted surfaces, (b) damage caused by weather (to include UV damage), accident, or acts of God,
(c) any product that has been altered or modified in ways not approved by Spudnik Equipment Company LLC., (d) deprecia-
tion or damage caused by normal wear, lack of reasonable and proper maintenance, misuse, failure to follow the product’s
Operator Manual recommendations, (e) Using machine for uses other than normal moving of agricultural products during planting,
harvest, and processing seasons. Agricultural products to include: Potatoes, beets, onions, carrots, grains, etc., (2) Used
products, (3) Repairs made by unauthorized dealers.
To Obtain Warranty Service
To be eligible for the Spudnik warranty, the purchaser must: (a) Have already remitted payment in full (b) have filled out and
submitted the Spudnik Delivery Declaration form to a Spudnik representative (c) report the product defect to an authorized
dealer or Spudnik sales representative and request repair within 30 days of noticing the defect and (d) make the product
available to the dealer or service center within a reasonable period of time, transportation charges prepaid.
The selling dealer has no authority to make any representation or promise on behalf of Spudnik, or to modify the terms or limi-
tations of this warranty in any way.

To the extent permitted by law, Spudnik does not make any warranty, representation, or promises (expressed or implied) as to the
quality, performance, or freedom from defect of any new Spudnik machinery. NO IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANT-
ABILITY OR FITNESS IS MADE. IN NO EVENT WILL SPUDNIK, AN AUTHORIZED SPUDNIK DEALER, OR ANY COM-
PANY AFFILIATED WITH SPUDNIK BE LIABLE FOR INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES. This warranty is
subject to any existing conditions of supply which may directly affect our ability to obtain materials or manufacture replacement
parts. Spudnik reserves the right to make improvements in design or changes in specifications at any time, without incurring
any obligation to owners of units previously sold. No one is authorized to alter, modify, or enlarge this warranty nor the exclu-
sion, limitations, and reservations.

General
Designated use of the machine:
The MODEL 2400 Universal Pup is designed exclusively for normal agricultural operations
(designated use).
Using the machine for other purposes or exceeding its designated limits shall be considered as being
contrary to the designated use. The manufacturer shall not be liable for any damages caused as a result
of such use. The user shall be solely responsible for such risks.
Operating the machine in accordance with its designated use also includes observing the instructions
specified in the operating manual and complying with the inspection and maintenance directives.
The Universal Pup may only be operated, serviced, and repaired by persons who are familiar with the
machine and have been informed of the inspections and maintenance directives.

In order to prevent dangerous situations, the information contained in this operation manual must be
read and observed by all persons who operate, service, or check this machine. Particular attention
should be paid to the section entitled “Safety”. Any instructions which are not understood must be
clarified before initial operation of the machine. In such cases, please consult your SPUDNIK agent or
contact us directly.
The relevant accident prevention directives as well as other generally applicable safety, health, and road
traffic regulations are to be observed.
Unauthorized modification and the use of spare parts, accessories, and ancillary equipment not supplied
and/or not approved by SPUDNIK, as the manufacturer, can have detrimental effects on the construction of
the machine or on the functions and hence impair the machine’s active and/or passive driving and
operations safety (accident prevention). The manufacturer does not accept liability for any damage
resulting from this.
Technical data, dimensions, and weights are not binding; we reserve the right to make modifications in the
course of further engineering developments.

The use of spare parts supplied by third parties shall only be permitted after consultation with the
manufacture. Original spare parts and accessories approved by the manufacturer are a contribution
to safety. The use of other parts may invalidate the liability of the manufacturer for any conse-
quences arising out of such use.

SAFETY
You are responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of your SPUDNIK
UNIVERSAL PUP. All operators and anyone doing work or maintenance on the Universal
Pup must be trained in the operation, maintenance procedures, and related SAFETY
information contained in this manual. All operators and maintenance personnel must
receive this training at least annually to be in compliance with OSHA regulation 1928.57.
This manual is a guide to good safety practices that should be followed while operating
the Universal Pup.
The operator is the most important safety device on the machine. It is the
operator’s responsibility to read and understand ALL operating and safety instructions
in this manual.
ANY UNAUTHORIZED MODIFICATIONS TO THE MACHINE IS CONSIDERED
A BREACH OF CONTRACT AND REMOVES ALL LIABILITY FROM THE
MANUFACTURER. Unauthorized modification may impair the function of the machine
and/or safety, and could affect the life and warranty of the Universal Pup.

YOUR SAFETY IS INVOLVED!
The SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL identifies important safety information on the safety
labels and in this manual. When you see this symbol be alert to the possibility of
personal injury or death.
SIGNAL WORDS:
DANGER, WARNING, and CAUTION are signal words that represent the following respective
messages:
DANGER: An immediate and specific hazard which WILL result in
severe injury or death if proper precautions are not taken.
WARNING: A specific hazard or unsafe practice which COULD result in
severe injury or death.
CAUTION: Unsafe practices which COULD result in personal injury if
proper precautions are not taken.

SAFETY PRACTICES
• The primary responsibility for safe operation of the Spudnik Universal Pup lies
with the owner/operator.
• OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) requires that all operators be
trained at the time of initial assignment and annually thereafter by the employer in
the safe operation of the machine.
• Read and understand the operator manual before operating, maintaining, or
adjusting the Universal Pup.
• Untrained individuals and children should not be allowed on or around the machine
at anytime.
• Keep personnel clear of the Universal Pup when swinging it left or right to avoid injury.
• Do not allow anyone to climb onto or under the Universal Pup when it is in operation.
• Keep hands, feet, long hair, and clothing away from moving and/or rotating parts.
• Never wear ill-fitting, baggy, or frayed clothing when working around or on any drive
system component.
• Do not attempt to service, lubricate, clean, or adjust the Universal Pup while it is
running.
• Inspect all mechanisms before starting the machine and replace all worn or
damaged parts.
• Make sure all guards and shields are properly installed and secured before
operating the machine.
• Replace all worn or missing bolts with SAE Grade 5 or higher, unless specifically
stated otherwise.
• Be careful when operating the machine on uneven terrain, hillsides, or near ditches to
avoid the potential of overturning the machine.
• For the Universal Pup to function properly the machine that it works in connection
with must be level.

SAFETY PRACTICES
• This machine is designed to require one operator standing on the same side of the
Universal Pup as the hydraulic control valve. Operating the Universal Pup from the
opposite side of the hydraulic control valve can result in bodily injury.
• When working on a machine supported by hydraulic cylinders, ALWAYS support the
structure by some other means than cylinders.
• Properly ground all electrically operated equipment.
• Disconnect electrical power to the machine when cleaning clogged rollers or chain,
removing obstructions, or removing dirt buildup from components.
• Use the slotted chain keeper on the pup hitch and the link chain on the Pup
Yoke, to keep the Pup Conveyor in position while loading and unloading.
• Keep safety labels and stickers clean and legible at all times.
• Replace safety labels and stickers that are missing or that have become illegible.
• When replacing a part(s) that displays a safety label or sticker, make sure that the new
part(s) also display the safety label or sticker.
• Safety labels and stickers are available from your dealer’s parts department.
TRANSPORTING SAFETY PRACTICES
• It is recommend that the Universal Pup be removed from the machine before
transporting.

SAFETY LABELS
• Keep safety labels and stickers clean and legible at all times.
• Replace safety labels and stickers that are missing or have become illegible.
• When replacing parts that display a safety label, make sure that the new parts also
display the safety label.
• Safety labels and stickers are available from your dealer’s parts department.
HOW TO INSTALL SAFETY LABELS
1. Be sure the installation area is clean and dry.
2. Decide the exact position before you remove the backing paper.
3. Remove the smallest portion of the split backing paper.
4. Align the label over the specified area and carefully position the small portion with
the exposed sticky backing in place.
5. Slowly peel back the remaining paper and carefully smooth the remaining portion of
the decal in place.
6. Small air pockets can be pierced with a pin and smoothed using the piece of decal
backing paper.

MAINTENANCE
• The hydraulic system used to power auxiliary functions uses Dexron III ATF
(automatic transmission fluid) for prime mover. Hydraulic reservoir fill level should be
checked at start of each season, and filled as needed.
• ATF in the hydraulic system should be drained and changed when it becomes dirty
and/or contaminated.
• To avoid contamination of product, hydraulic fittings must be checked daily for leaks
and replaced or tightened as necessary.
• Oil in gearboxes must be checked every hundred hours of operation.

• Oil should be changed when it becomes dirty and/or contaminated.
• All bearings are of a sealed type and are lubricated by the manufacturer. Bearings
will only need to be greased at the start of season. One pump of grease at the start of
the season is sufficient. Over greasing sealed bearings will result in the seal being
broken and rapid failure of the bearing. If seal is broken, the bearing needs to be
greased daily until replaced.
• Disconnect electrical power to machine whenever maintaining, repairing, or servicing
the Pup.
• Replace damaged or missing drive shields and safety labels at the start of every
season.
• Proper belt alignment and tension are key to long belt life.
• Belt should be kept in alignment between pup conveyor sides; alignment should be
an even distance between belt and conveyor side on each side.

Belt runs to loose side (narrowest space between belt and side).
Tighten loose side as necessary or loosen other side as necessary.
Belt tension must be great enough to prevent slippage between drive pulley and
belt.
• Be sure the electrical system is supplied with electricity of the proper phase and adequate voltage.
• Drive chains should be kept clean and tensioned correctly to prolong chain life. Ideal
chain tension should allow ½” maximum flex when deflected. Over tightening will
cause damage to bearings and sprockets. New roller chain drives should be
inspected after 50 hours of operation. Every 500 hours thereafter. During inspection
look for, drive interference, damaged chain or sprockets, loose setscrews, proper
sprocket alignment, chain tension, proper lubrication, foreign material buildup, and
proper guarding. Roller chain is considered worn out when it reaches three (3)
percent elongation. To check for elongation measure from pin to pin and compare
with new chain. When replacing chain or sprockets it is best to replace both at the
same time.
• Lubricate drive chain with a good quality lubricant every 100 hours of machine
operation.
• Check hinge points and pivot bolts every 100 hours of machine operation for fatigue
and excessive wear. Replace as needed to avoid personal injury.

MACHINE OPERATION
The model 2400 Universal Pup has been designed to speed up the transfer
and reduce the bruising of potatoes from the truck to the piler, conveyor, eliminator, etc.
1. Check that all pivot bolts and hinge pins are in good condition.
2. Properly ground all electrically operated equipment.
3. When supplying power to the Universal Pup, be sure the main power switch on the
electrical panel of the machine that the pup is working in connection with, and the switch
on the pup are turned “OFF. DO NOT plug the Universal Pup in with the power “ON”.
4. Check the voltage label on the main electrical panel and on the Universal Pup.
Make sure they are the same phase and voltage. Then plug the Universal Pup in
and turn the main power switch “ON”.
5. Make sure the Universal Pup is raised and clear of all obstructions.
6. To test the direction on a three-phase Universal Pup, briefly turn the switch on the universal
pup's electrical panel to “HAND”.
7. To prevent collision with the Universal Pup and bending the hopper, provide a stop
for the truck or semi trailer.
8. The Universal Pup is designed to require one operator standing on the same side
of the Universal Pup as the hydraulic control valves. Operating the Universal Pup
from the opposite side of the hydraulic control valves can result in bodily injury.
9. Keep personnel clear of the Universal Pup when swinging it left or right to avoid
injury.
10. After the truck is in position, raise the Universal Pup until the hopper is tight to the
underneath of the discharge conveyor. Make sure that the hopper does not
interfere with the discharge conveyor belt or drive.
11. Before plugging in a truck, be sure the truck switch on the universal pup's electrical
panel is turned “OFF”. DO NOT plug the truck in with the power ON.
12. Make sure that all of the connectors and plugs on the machine are attached, and
are clear of water and other material.
Turn the switch to “AUTO” and the Universal
Pup will run with the rest of your system.
