2.1 Protective Gloves
Sharp or hot components can cause cuts or burns.
NIf sharp or hot components have to be handled during
a repair: Wear protective gloves.
2.2 Safety Glasses
Particles and objects can be thrown into the air at high
speed during a repair. Thrown particles or objects can
cause eye injuries.
NIf there is a risk of particles being thrown during the
repair: Wear safety glasses.
2.3 Spare Parts
If spare parts not approved by STIHL are installed, they
may not fulfill the required function or deactivate safety
devices. This can result in serious or fatal injuries.
NSTIHL recommends the use of genuine STIHL
replacement parts.
3.1 Preparing the Machine
NRemove the padding.
NDrain the fuel tank into a container approved for fuels.
NRemove auger.
NClean the machine.

5.2 Removing the Handlebars
NPreparations, @ 3.1.
NCut through the cable ties (11).
NHold screws (8) steady and unscrew the nuts (7).
NPull out the screws (8).
NRemove the handlebar (6) together with the control
handle (2) and elbow (1).
NRemove the handlebar (10) together with the assist
handle (9) and elbow (1).
NHold screws (4) steady and unscrew the nuts (5).
NPull out the screws (4).
NPull out the elbows (1).
5.3 Removing the Control Handle
NRemove handlebar (6) together with control handle
(2), @ 5.2.
NLoosen the screws (3).
NPull the handlebar (6) out of the control handle (2).
Disassemble and assemble the control handle (2), see
‘Series 4180 Powerhead’ service manual.
5.4 Removing the Assist Handle
NRemove handlebar (10) together with assist handle
(9), @ 5.2.
NCut open and remove the assist handle (9).

5.5 Fitting the Assist Handle
NCoat inside of assist handle (9) with press fluid.
NPush the assist handle (9) onto the handlebar (10)
until distance "a" is 37 mm (1.5 in).
NFit handlebar (10) together with assist handle (9), @
5.7.
5.6 Fitting the Control Handle
NDegrease clamp surfaces on handlebar (6).
NLoosen the screws (3).
NPush control handle (2 ) onto handlebar (6 ) as far as
bend.
NTighten down the screws (3).
NFit handlebar (6) together with control handle (2), @
5.7.
5.7 Fitting the Handlebars
NPush the elbows (1) into place.
NInsert the screws (4) from outside.
NHold the screws (4) steady and fit and tighten down
the nuts (5).
NPush the handlebars (6 and 10) into place.
NInsert the screws (8) from outside.
NHold the screws (8) steady and fit and tighten down
the nuts (7).
NLay throttle cable (13) along the handle frame and
secure it with cable ties (12) – ends facing down.

6.2 Removing the Antivibration Elements
NPreparations, @ 3.1.
NRemove the handlebar, @ 5.2.
NHold screws (1) steady and unscrew the nuts (5).
NPull out the screws (1).
NOpen the AV housing (2) and remove together with
tubes (6).
NCoat rubber buffers (3) and stops (4) in area of tubes
with press fluid.
NPull off the rubber buffers (3).
NPull off the stops (4).
6.3 Installing the Antivibration Elements
NAlign tubes (6) so that the labels face up.
NCoat stops (4) and rubber buffers (3) with press fluid
before installing.
NPush the stops (4) onto the tubes (6).
NPush the rubber buffers (3) onto the tubes (6).

7.2 Removing the Powerhead
NPreparations, @ 3.1.
NRemove handlebar together with control handle and
elbow, @ 5.2.
NDisengage the auger brake.
NLoosen the screws (2).
NPull out the auger brake lever (1).
NUnscrew the nuts (3).
NLift the powerhead (5) off the clutch housing (4).

7.4 Disassembling and Assembling the Powerhead
Refer to ‘Series 4180 Powerhead’ service manual for
diagnosis and repair procedures on powerhead.
7.5 Installing the Powerhead
NPosition the powerhead (5) on the clutch housing (4).
NFit the nuts (3) on the collar screws in the powerhead
(5) and tighten them down.
NPush the auger brake lever (1) into place.
NTighten down the screws (2).
NInstall the control handle, @ 5.6.
NInstall handlebar together with control handle and
elbow, @ 5.7.

NUse M5 stud puller 5910 893 0510 to remove the
collar screws (3).
8.3 Installing the Collar Screws
NCoat threads (5) of collar screws (3) with Loctite 242.
NFit M5 nuts on the collar screws (3).
NInsert and tighten down the collar screws (3).
NUnscrew the M5 nuts.
NInstall the powerhead, @ 7.2.
NInstall handlebar together with control handle, @ 5.7.

NGrip underside of the fan housing (1), lift it up and
remove.
NInspect guide pins (2) on both sides of fan housing (1)
and replace if damaged.
8.5 Installing the Fan Housing
NPosition the fan housing (1) on the powerhead,
making sure that:
–The ledge (6) on the fan housing (1) engages under
the shroud.
–The guide pins (2) on the engine side of the fan
housing (1) are in the holes in the engine pan.
NInsert and tighten down the screws (4).
NInstall the powerhead, @ 7.2.
NInstall handlebar together with control handle, @ 5.7.
8.6 Removing the Air Guide Shroud
NPreparations, @ 3.1.
NTake out the screw (5).
NUnhook and remove the air guide shroud (6).
NRemove the bushing (7).
8.7 Installing the Air Guide Shroud
NFit bushing (7) in the air guide shroud (6).
NFit retaining lugs of air guide shroud (6) in the cooling
slots of the shroud (9) and screen (8).
NInsert and tighten down the screw (5).

NTake out the screws (8).
NLift clutch housing (1) with gearbox (4) out of the
handle frame (7).
9.3 Installing Clutch Housing with Gearbox
NFit clutch housing (1) with gearbox (4) in the handle
frame (7) so that the screw plug (9) faces the narrow
side (arrow) of the base plate.
NInsert and tighten down the screws (8).
NInstall the powerhead, @ 7.2.
NInstall handlebar together with control handle, @ 5.7.

NTake out the screws (5) and (6).
Screw (10) remains in position.
NPry the gearbox (4) off the clutch housing and lift it
away.
Apply tool to: Lug (arrow) on gearbox (4).
NPull out the pinion shaft (3) with gear (2).
NPull the pinion shaft (3) out of the gear (2).
9.5 Mounting Clutch Housing on Gearbox
NPush the pinion shaft (3) into the gear (2).
NCoat teeth on pinion shaft (3), gear (2) and ball
bearing in clutch housing (1) with gear grease.
NPush the pinion shaft (3) with gear (2) into the ball
bearing in the clutch housing (1).
NApply uniform coat of about 85 g (3 oz) gear grease
to the clutch housing, making sure the sealing face
(arrows) remains free from grease.
NApply Dirko sealant to the clutch housing sealing face
(arrows) and check the following points:
–Sealant forms a bead a = 1 mm (0.04 in) high.
–Sealant does not project into the clutch housing (1).
NPosition the gearbox (4) on the clutch housing (1) so
that the pinion shaft (3) is seated in the ball bearing in
the gearbox (4).
NFit screws (5 and 6) and tighten them down crosswise
in an alternate pattern.
NInstall clutch housing together with gearbox, @ 9.3.
NInstall the powerhead, @ 7.2.
NInstall handlebar together with control handle, @ 5.7.
9.6 Removing the Handle Frame
NPreparations, @ 3.1.
NRemove the handlebar, @ 5.2.
NOpen the AV housing and remove it together with
tubes, @ 6.2.
NRemove the powerhead, @ 7.2.
NRemove clutch housing together with gearbox, @
9.2.
9.7 Fitting the Handle Frame
NInstall clutch housing together with gearbox, @ 9.3.
NInstall the powerhead, @ 7.2.

10.2 Inspecting Clutch Drum
NPreparations, @ 3.1.
NRemove handlebar together with control handle, @
5.2.
NRemove the powerhead, @ 7.2.
NRemove clutch housing together with gearbox, @
9.2.
NRemove clutch housing from the gearbox, @ 9.4.
NInspect the clutch drum (1) for signs of wear.
If there are visible signs of wear on the inside diameter of
the clutch drum (1):
NMeasure remaining wall thickness ‘a’.
If the remaining wall thickness ‘a’ is less than 80% of the
original wall thickness ‘b’:
NInstall a new clutch drum (1), @ 10.3.
10.3 Removing the Clutch Drum
NPreparations, @ 3.1.
NRemove handlebar together with control handle, @
5.2.
NRemove the powerhead, @ 7.2.
NRemove clutch housing with gearbox, @ 9.2.
NRemove clutch housing from the gearbox, @ 9.4.
NRemove the circlip (3) with pliers DIN 5254-A10 –
0811 611 8200.
NUse press arbor 1117 893 7200 to remove the clutch
drum (1).

10.4 Installing the Clutch Drum
NApply a suitable piece of pipe (4, i.d. 16 mm) to the
inner race of the ball bearing to support the clutch
housing (2) from inside.
NPress home clutch drum (1) with installing sleeve (5)
1115 893 4600 so that the annular groove is exposed
on the inside.
NFit circlip (3) with pliers DIN 5254-A10 0811 611 8200
so that it is seated in the groove in the input journal of
the clutch drum (1).
NFit clutch housing on the gearbox, @ 9.5.
NInstall the clutch housing with gearbox, @ 9.3.
NInstall the powerhead, @ 7.2.
NInstall handlebar together with control handle, @ 5.7.

11.2 Testing Auger Brake
NEngage the auger brake.
NStart the engine.
NOpen the throttle wide for no more than 3 seconds –
the auger must not rotate.
NWith the engine at idle speed, disengage the auger
brake.
NOpen the throttle wide.
NActivate the auger brake manually – the auger must
come to a standstill without any perceptible delay.
11.3 Removing the Brake Band
NPreparations, @ 3.1.
NDisengage the auger brake.
NRemove handlebar together with control handle, @
5.2.
NRemove the powerhead, @ 7.2.
NRemove clutch housing together with gearbox, @
9.2.
NRemove clutch housing from the gearbox, @ 9.4.
NRemove the clutch drum, @ 10.3.
NTake out the screw (12).
NRemove the cover (11).
NRemove the cover (18).
NEngage the auger brake.

NTake out the screw (13).
NPry out the insert (14).
NPry the brake band (15) out of its seat (arrow).
Do not overstretch the brake band (15).
NDisengage the auger brake.
NUnhook the brake band (15) from the lever (9).
NCheck brake band (15) for wear, @ 11.4.
11.4 Checking Brake Band for Wear
Install a new brake band if one of the following points
applies:
–Large areas of wear on inside.
–Partially worn areas on outside.
–Thickness of brake band less than 0.9 mm / 0.035 in
at any point.
11.5 Removing the Brake Lever
NRemove the brake band, @ 11.3.
NEngage the auger brake.
NUse assembly tool 1117 890 0900 (19) to unhook
brake spring (16) from anchor pin (17, arrow).
NUnscrew the bearing pin (1).
NRemove the E-clip (10).
NPush out the retainer (2).
NPull out the brake lever (9).
11.6 Removing the Flat Springs
NRemove the brake lever, @ 11.5.
NTake out the screw (3).
NRemove the hooked flat spring (4).
NRemove the two flat spring (5).
NTake out the nut (6).
11.7 Removing the Pins
NRemove the flat springs, @ 11.6.
NUse 3 mm (1/8 in) diameter pin punch to drive out pin
(8) from the outside.
NUse 3 mm (1/17 in) diameter pin punch to drive out
pin (8) from the outside.
11.8 Installing the Pins
NCoat knurled portion of new pins (8 and 17) with
Loctite 242.
NInsert the pins (8 and 17) in the bores so that their
knurling meshes with the knurling in the clutch
housing (7).
NDrive pin (17) home until height
‘a’ is about 5.5 -5.7 mm (about 0.22 in).
NDrive pin (8) home until height ‘b’ is
about 6.0 -6.2 mm (about 0.24 in).
NInstall the flat springs, @ 11.10.

11.9 Installing the Flat Springs
NPosition the two plain flat springs (5) behind the
hooked flat spring (4).
NInsert screw (3) through the holes in the flat springs
and fit the nut (6).
NPush the nut (6) into its seat in the clutch housing (7).
NHold the flat springs (4 and 5) steady to prevent them
twisting and tighten down the screw (3).
NInstall the brake lever, @ 11.10.
11.10 Installing the Brake Lever
NLubricate pins (8 and 17) with multipurpose grease.
NPush the brake lever (9) onto the pin (8).
NLubricate brake lever (9) with multipurpose grease.
NPush retainer (2) over the brake lever (9). Brake lever
(9) must engage the opening in the retainer (2).
NInsert bearing pin (1) and tighten it down firmly.
NFit E-clip (10) in groove of pin (8).
NAttach the brake spring (16) to the lever (9).
NUse assembly tool 1117 890 0900 (19) to attach
brake spring (16) to the anchor pin.
NInstall the brake band, @ 11.11.
11.11 Installing the Brake Band
NDisengage the auger brake.
NLubricate inside of brake band (15) with gear grease.
NAttach the brake band (15) to the brake lever (9).
NFit the brake band (15) in its guide (20) in the clutch
housing (7).
NEngage the auger brake.
NFit the brake band (15) in the clutch housing (7).
NFit the insert (14).
NInsert and tighten down the screw (13).
NFit the cover (18).
NFit the cover (11).
