VTD AWD
Models with the 5-speed automatic transmission
use the Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) system
that normally splits power 45% front and 55% rear
for a sporty feel, and dynamically reapportions
torque for maximum grip.
ACTIVE AWD
Matched to the 4-speed automatic, the Active
AWD system monitors parameters such as
wheel slippage and vehicle speed, actively
adjusting power to the front or rear wheels
for optimal adhesion.
CONTINUOUS AWD
Outback models equipped with the 5-speed
manual transmission use a viscous-locking
center differential. Should wheel slippage
occur, it helps transfer power to the wheels
with the most traction.
SUBARU SYMMETRICAL ALL-WHEEL DRIVE

adhesive advantage of the standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system to
keep all four tires sticking to the road. Its uniquely balanced configuration helps ensure stability

The available electronic stability control system helps
keep you on your intended path by measuring variables
such as steering input, braking and vehicle angle.
Sensing any slide that causes the vehicle to deviate from
your intended course, VDC applies individual brakes
and/or reduces engine power to counteract the slide
and help keep you safely in control.
HEAVY DUTY SUSPENSION
Riding on reinforced springs, shocks and other
strengthened components that comprise its heavy
duty suspension, the Outback enables you to travel
over rocky, uneven surfaces. And with up to 8.7
inches of ground clearance, you have the ability to
clear many of the unpaved roads that would block
the path of other vehicles.
POWER DISTRIBUTION
Unlike front- or rear-wheel-drive vehicles, the
Outback distributes power to all four wheels.
When it detects a loss of adhesion, it seamlessly
transfers power to the front or rear wheels with
the most traction to help maintain better control.
BRAKES
Accurate control and deceleration without fade.
Every Outback is equipped with four-wheel disc
brakes that are enhanced with Anti-lock Brake
System (ABS) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution
(EBD) that provides more even and stable braking
by optimally apportioning stopping power to the
front and rear wheels.

The 180-degree boxer engine layout allows the pistons
to move in exact horizontal opposition, effectively

Compared to other types of engines, the lower
profile of the SUBARU BOXER engine helps the
Outback lean less around curves and while man-

characteristics to suit your driving needs—or desires. Put it in
Intelligent mode for fuel efficiency around town and when
driving in slippery conditions, such as loose gravel or wet
roads. Dial it up to Sport for quick throttle feedback and linear
acceleration. For enthusiastic driving, the Sport Sharp mode,
controlled by either the dial or a button on the steering wheel,
delivers more power sooner, greater low-end thrust and
maximum enjoyment.
TRANSMISSIONS
The 5-speed manual transmission is fully synchronized
for precise action. The smooth-shifting 4- and 5-speed
automatic units feature SPORTSHIFT®manual control
for greater involvement, and an adaptive control
that provides optimal power for climbing hills.
OUTBACK 2.5i
The aluminum-alloy 170 horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder
engine utilizes a computer-controlled i-Active Valve Lift
System that delivers a broader torque curve and seamless
power. You’ll also get great gas mileage and low emis-
sions that meet some of today’s toughest standards.
OUTBACK 2.5 XT
With a hood scoop to aid air intake to the intercooler, the
turbocharger of the 2.5 XT Limited delivers 243 potent
horsepower. Peak torque of 241 lb.-ft. is reached at a low
3,600 rpm, thanks to the Active Valve Control System
which increases overall breathability for more power.
OUTBACK 3.0 R
The normally aspirated 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine
delivers 245 horsepower and 215 lb.-ft. of torque.
And sophisticated Active Valve Lift and Active Valve
Control systems ensure seamless, ultra-smooth power
output, no matter where you are on the tachometer.
