INTRODUCTION
The analogue backup unit, ABU, has been designed for purpose of monitoring and automati-
cally backing up analogue audio circuits. The system is comprised of a ABU slave unit installed
at the audio source and a ABU master unit installed at the transmitter site. The ABU master
will continuously monitor both the left and right audio channels and implement a backup
scheme determined by the type of fault detected. In the event of a total failure at the signal
source the ABU master can automatically switch to a locally generated program source.
Key Features
One Integral ISDN Terminal Adapter (64Kbps / 56Kbps)
12 International ISDN Standards - User Selectable from Front Panel
Real-time Applications - 3.8ms Coding Delay
15.5KHz Mono or 7.5KHz Mono Audio Over ISDN (128Kbps - 2B Channels)
> 82dB Signal-to-Noise Ratio
Remote Configuration via Management Ports
Keypad & Crystal Clear VFD Display
85-260V AC Auto-ranging Power Supply

(a) Manual Dial
The first depression of the DIAL button will
take the unit into the Manual Dial menu as
the first option. This allows the user to type
in an ISDN number via the keypad. An
optional sub-address can also be specified
by use of the button (translated to # on
the display), followed by a numerical sub-
address:
MENU : Manual Dial
01256880123#1
Once the ISDN number has been entered,
a second depression of the DIAL button
instructs the unit to dial the displayed
ISDN number. The call status is then
displayed as follows:
B1: Ready 7K5
B2: Ready MUTE
Then,
B1: Dial 7K5
B2: Ready MUTE
If the call has successfully connected then
the following is displayed:
B1: Con 7K5
B2: Ready SYNC
If the call fails to be established, then one
of the following diagnostics messages is
displayed for 1 seconds:
ISDN CLEARING
Together with:
Error
Remote Error
Disconnected
Number Unobtainable
Number Incomplete
Number Changed
Network Busy
Number Busy
Line Out Of Service
Not Allowed

No Reply
Incompatible Dest
To Dial the second channel B2, repeat the
above procedure for each. The audio
bandwidth will automatically adjust to
include the additional B Channel.
NOTE: The display of the Slave ABU will not show
the “MUTE/SYNC” status field.

RESTORE Time
The restore time represents the number of
seconds that a valid restore condition is
required before the leased line is verified
as fault free. A valid restore condition is
defined as at least 2 seconds of signal
above the restore threshold in the previous
5 seconds.

power cycle.

Main Force audio to main input.
Note: The manual override can itself be overridden
by the remote override functions
MASTER ALGORITHM
State 1
In this state the ABU master is independ-
ently monitoring both the left and right
hand audio feeds for a fault condition, as
defined by the backup time and backup
level parameters. This state will be exited
on one of the following events
Right channel audio fault
Left Channel audio fault
ISDN call connected
manual override
remote override
State 2
This state is initiated when a ISDN backup
call is required. The state will attempt to
dial the configured ISDN numbers and
establish a connection. It will only switch
the main audio across when the presence
of audio has been verified.
The presence of audio is defined as a signal
greater than the “backup level” + 2dBm for
a duration of 1 second in the previous 5
seconds.
If either the audio or ISDN fails then
control passes to state 3.
State 3
This state will start the CD player and
switch the main audio feed over to the
AUX. input. Once selected, the ISDN line is
dialled every 2 minutes until a valid con-
nection is established with audio. If such a
connection is achieved then control will
pass to state 2. Otherwise control will
remain with state 3 until either the fault
has cleared or a override occurs.
State 4
This state is initiated when a single audio
input has been classified as faulty. Essen-
tially the unit will proceed to feed the
remaining good input channel to both the
output channels. This will provide a
pseudo monoised service.

9
State 5
This state hangs all ISDN calls and re-
initialises the ABU.
State 6
Control is passed to this state when a
unannounced ISDN call is detected. It is
assumed that the call is either locally
generated from the front panel controls or
originated from a remote ABU or codec.
The main audio feed will only switch over
to the ISDN if valid audio is present. Hence
the ISDN may be tested without taking the
main service off air.
State 7
if either a manual or remote override is
initiated then control is passed to this
state. This state is responsible for deter-
mining the priority of the override and
ensuring that it is implemented.

This state will attempt to force the ABU

connection will be dallied, However switch
over will only occur if valid audio is present
once the connection has been established.

REMOTE MANAGEMENT
The ABU master can be configured remotely by connecting a straight 9 Way D-Type cable to
the MGR IP port, and using the Standard Windows Terminal Program. To configure more than
one unit at the same time, the user can connect another straight 9 Way D-Type cable from the
MGR OP port of the first unit, to the MGR IP port of the next unit, in a “Daisy Chain” manner.
There are no limitations on the number of ABU units which can be linked together for remote
configuration purposes.
On initial connection, the Standard Windows Terminal Program screen will be blank. The user
should then press the Enter key to clear the command buffer. Then type the following :-
poll 0091-002 <CR>
0091-002 is only an example, and should be replaced by the actual serial number of the unit you wish to configure.
<CR> = carriage return / enter
0091-002>
A prompt of the actual serial number will appear on the screen. The unit is now ready to
receive commands.
help <CR>
Type help for a complete list of commands and options. The ? key will also have the same
action.
The format of the commands are displayed as follows :-
