What is a
KSR dat a
t erm i nal
? How
does it
differ from a
st andard
typewriter
?
The
difference
between
a
KSR dat a
t erm i nal and a
st andard
typewriter is
the
ability of a dat a
t erm i nal to
generat e codes
through the
keyboard
.
The codes can
be
t ransm i tt ed
to ,
and printed by ,
its
own
printer
and / or
t ransm i tt ed to , and
underst ood by ,
anot her
device
(
dat a
t erm i nal ,
com put er , dat a
logger , CRT ,
etc. ) . The KSR
also
underst ands and prints codes
received from
anot her device .
The code syst em used by the Model 743 is the ASCII Code Syst em and Charact er Set , com m only
called
ASCII (
pronounced " as - key ’’ ) .
The ASCII
Code
Syst em
consist s
of
different
com bi nat ions of
ones and zeros
(
corresponding to
num bers
,
alphabet ic
let ters ,
and sym bols )
which are
com m unicat ed
as digital
signals (
runn
) .
Generally
, a one
is an on signal
and a zero is an
off signal . For
exam ple
,
if you look on page A - 1 , you will notice that a " U " is represent ed by a 1010101 ( b through by ) .
When you depress the U key , the t erm i nal generat es an on off on off on off on . ( Think of a light
swit ch being
flipped
on
and off . )
How are these
digital signals
passed from one
device to anot her ?
If the distance
is not too great
( 50
feet usually is the lim it ) , only cables are necessary and the t erm i nal is said to be hard wired to the
ot her device .
For
exam ple

usually hard

For longer distances , telephone lines often are necessary ; and the digital signals ( ones and zeros ) m ust
be convert ed to analog signals ( ) . The device used to convert digital signals ( com pat ible with

GENERAL OPERATING GUIDELINES
1 .
All operat ing instructions in Sect ions I , II , III , and IV of this m anual assum e that the Model
743 is correct ly installed in the desired configurat ion . If the dat a t erm i nal is not installed ,
det erm i ne the configurat ion you will require and connect the t erm i nal as described in the
appropriat e
instructions in
Sect ion
V.

External device denotes : a m inicom put er , dat a logger , CRT , com put er , plot ter , or any ot her
device which com m unicat es with the local Model 743 over a cable ( hard wired ) . External
m odem denotes : a m odem which is hard wired to the local Model 743. Local equi pm ent
denotes : the Model 743 , or the Model 743 with an ext ernal m odem and / or an ext ernal device .

Rem ot e device denotes : a m inicom put er , dat a t erm i nal , CRT , com put er , dat a logger , plot ter or
any ot her device which com m unicat es with the local Model 743 over telephone lines . Rem ot e

Connect the Model 743 to the com m unicat ion line as described in

keyboard is

not printed by
its printer ( or ot her

device ) . Since the Model 743 is capable of t ransm i tt ing and receiving

Briefly st udy the keyboard and note the sim i larit ies and differences

Model 743 keyboard to accom plish the sam e act ion as a RETURN key
on a st andard typewriter . The NUM swit ch , unavailable on st andard
typewriter
keyboards ,
