Limit of Liability
1. Warranty period is for period of 18 months after date of the bill of lading or 12 months after installation
whichever earlier．
2. During warranty period，equipment sold is warranted to the Buyer to be free from defective material and
workmanship．If Buyer notifies Seller in writing of any claimed defect in the equipment and if，after
appropriate reasonable opportunity to inspect and remedy any defect by Seller，the equipment is found
not be in conformity with this warranty，the Seller will，at its option and expenses either repair the same
or provided a replacement of defective parts，on condition of F.O.B. Japan．
3. The warranties set forth herein are exclusive and in lieu of all the warranties，express or implied by law or
trade usage．Seller shall not be liable for any special，indirect，or consequential damages，including but
not limited to loss of use for lost of anticipated profits，arising out of this contract or a breach thereof．
Seller does not warrant any auxialiary equipment．
4. The foregoing warranty does not cover，and the Seller makes no warranty with respect to：
（1） Defect is caused by other equipment which not supplied by Seller or use of improper parts not
specified by Seller．
（2） Failures not reported the Seller within the warranty period above specified．
（3） Force Majeure：
The Seller shall not be liable in any manner for failures，damages，directly or indirectly owing to
any causes or circumstances beyond Seller's control，including Acts of God，Govermental
orders or restriction，war，war like conditions，hostilities，sanctions，riot，looting，strike，lockout，
plague or other epidemics，fire and flood．
（4） Failures or damages due to negligence，accident，abuse，improper operation or maintenance or
abnormal conditions of temperature，moisture，dirt，or corrosion，and repaired works by others
without Seller's consent．
（5） Improper storage before installation．
（6） The cost of dismantling and installation of the equipment．
（7） Dispatching an engineer for repair．

Purpose of this Manual
The purpose of this manual is to provide the detailed information that the user needs to know in order to
correctly operate，service and inspect the volute pump．
This manual is intended for persons experienced in the operation of volute pumps，or for persons who have
received instruction from such experienced persons．
Wiring and electrical work must be performed by qualified persons only.

1. Safety
1.1 Warnings
The Warnings used in this manual are graded into 4 types，according to the degree of
danger（or seriousness of potential accident）that they signify．
DANGER indicates the highest degree of danger，followed by WARNING and CAUTION，
in that order．
There are also NOTES，which draw attention to important information．
Be sure to know the degree of danger signified by the various types of warning，and
follow all the instructions that they give．
Grade Meaning

result in death or serious injury．
Potential danger．Failure to follow the instructions given
could result in death or serious injury．
Potential danger．Failure to follow the instructions given could
result in medium or light injury，or in damage to the equipment．

1.2 Safety instructions
1.2.1 Safety instructions for operation
（1） Before turning on the power，always fit the cover over the motor terminal box．
There are parts inside the box that are electrified at 100V-200V and could
electrocute you．
（2） Do not allow water to get onto or into motor．If it does，it could cause short circuits or break
insulation，which could result in damage to the machine．
（3） Before operating the pump，inform all the personnel concerned，and make sure that
nobody is in a dangerous place．
（4） While the pump is on operation，touch only those parts of it that you have to touch in order to
operate it．
（5） The motor can be hot. Do not touch it.
（6） Operate the controls GENTLY ．Do not use force ．Operating the controls forcefully
may result in damage，malfunction or breakdown．
（7） The pump should only be operated by persons who have been authorized to do so by
the director of the workplace．
（8） While the pump is running，be sure to fit the shaft coupling protective cover．
（9） Do not run the pump with tools or other objects placed on top of it．
（10） If any of the pump's components are defective or not functioning，DO NOT operate the pump．
（11） Do not put fingers or objects into the motor's openings．If you do，you could get an electric
shock．

1.2.2 Safety instructions for installation，maintenance and inspection
（1） Installation，maintenance and inspection of the pump should be performed by personnel who
have been trained in its operation and use．Electrical wiring work should be performed only by
suitably qualified personnel or electricians．
（2） Be sure to make an auxiliary pump readily available if the pump is used for key facilities in
which disruption of water supply may cause a serious problem.
（3） Before carrying out maintenance or inspection of the pump，be sure to inform all relevant
personnel．
（4） Before carrying out maintenance or inspection of the pump, stop the pump and turn off the
main power supply to the operation panel．If you carry out the work with the power turned on，
there is danger of electric shock，and the pump could start up suddenly，causing injury．Be
sure to install an electrical leakage breaker on the power supply side．
（5） If any trouble or abnormality occurs while the pump is running, stop operation, shut off the
power supply and contact the dealer that you bought the pump from, or else a service agent
approved by the manufacturer.
If you continue operation despite the occurrence of trouble or abnormality,electric shock or fire
could result.
（6） Do not allow water to get onto or into the motor．If it does，it could cause short circuits or break
insulation，which could result in damage to the machine．
（7） After the power is turned on，touch only those parts of the pump that you have to touch in order
to operate it．In particular，do not touch the electrical circuits，or you could be electrocuted．
Be sure to fit the cover over the motor terminal box．
１.３Location of warning label
The location of the warning label is shown in the drawing below．If the label becomes dirty or
illegible，or starts to peel off，etc.，replace it with a new one．
Follow ALL instructions in warnings affixed to the pump and written in this manual．

2. Structure and overview of the pump
2.1 Names of parts
① Casing
The piping is connected to the casing．
The impeller，which giving pressure to the pumped water by its rotation，is housed
inside the casing．
② Motor
③ Common bed
④ Bearing case
The sealed ball bearing is housed in it．
⑤ Shaft coupling
This coupling connects the pump and motor shafts，transmitting the power．
It absorbs offset between the centers of the two shafts．
⑥ Shaft coupling protective cover
⑦ Shaft seal parts
This prevents leakage from the clearance through which the shaft penetrates．
Both of mechanical seal type and gland packing type are available．
The pump shown here is a typical model

*1 Fresh water: Water containing no contaminants (solids) with pH of 6.5 to 8 and whose chloride ion
concentration does not exceed 200 ppm. If the water contains substantial amount of corrosive ions,
contact us for consultation.
*2 The total suction head in the specifications is the value at 20°C water temperature. The maximum
suction head should decrease when the pump is used with warm or hot water. Contact us when
pump is used for such applications.

3. Installation
3.1 Befor using the pump
When receiving pump，check the following：
If any defects，contact agent．
（1）Are all descriptions on name plate as ordered？
（2）Has any damage occurred during transportation？
（3）Have any nuts or bolts（or other parts that should be tight）been loosened？
（4）Have all the accessories that were ordered been delivered？
３.２Instructions for installation
（1） Install the pump in a place that satisfies the following conditions：
・ A place sheltered from wind and rain．
The standard pump is for indoor use．If it is installed outdoors，order out door application
pump as special specification, or the place must be sheltered from wind and rains．
・ A well-ventilated place，with less humidity or dust in the air．
・ A place with ambient temperature in the range 0-40℃．
・ A place where unauthorized persons cannot enter．（So that unauthorized persons can not
operate the pump．）
・ A place as near as possible to the water source.
・ A place where a possible water leak should not create a secondary hazard.
（2） Fasten the pump securely on a concrete foundation，using anchor bolts．
（3） Be sure to provide drainage ditch around the pump．
（4） If there is danger of freezing in the wintertime，be sure to provide anti freezing measures for the
pump room or for the pumps，its valves and piping．
（5） The doors and walls of the pump room should be made of materials with good sound
insulation effect．
（6） When lifting the pump，rope must tight up with through under common bed．
Before unpacking，make sure that the pump is the right side up．
Especially if packing is wooden crate，beware of nails，
or you could hurt yourself．
Install the pump in a position where the total suction head (suction
height + suction piping loss) will be within the specified standard value
and also as small as possible.
Do not lift the pump with tighting rope on pump shaft or eye bolt of motor．
Before lifting the pump，check its weight（given in catalog and outer dimension
drawings），and make sure that the weight of the pump does not exceed the rated
load of the ropes and lifting equipment．

3.3 Installation procedure
（1） Provide a foundation of ample area and depth to bear the weight of the pump and its
operating load．
（2） Provide holes in the foundation in accordance with the drawings，or else using the pump itself
to determine the hole positions prior the pump is installed．

（3） Make sure that the surface of the concrete foundation is level，and protect it horoughly until the
pump is installed．
（4） Mount the pump on the foundation．When mounting，insert square steel plates or metal
wedges between the common base and the concrete foundation，to make a gap through which
the mortar can be poured in．（The gap should be 10-30 mm wide.）
As well as being used for adjusting the levelness of the pump，the metal wedges will
receive the pump's weight and operating load．
Use only a few wedges，that are as thick as possible．
Insert the wedges close to the anchor bolts，and locate them so that they provide
even weight．
（5） Fix the anchor bolts to the common base using the nuts，and hang them in center of bolt holes.

（6） Place level gauge on the surface of the flange，and check that the flange is perfectly horizontal．
If it is not，use the metal wedges to adjust it．
（7） Confirmation of shaft alignment．
The shafts is aligned before shipment．However，if the shafts may become offset during
transport，re-align it at site．
（8） Pour mortar into the anchor bolt holes，the gap under the common base，and the area
around the common base after alignment of shafts is completed．When the mortar has fully
cured，tighten the anchor bolts．
Be sure to align the shafts correctly．If they are not correctly aligned，
damage to the equipment，vibration or noise could result．
If you remove the shaft coupling cover to align the shafts，BE SURE to fix it
back in place before running the pump．If the cover is left off when the pump
is run，body parts could get caught up by the rotating parts，resulting in
serious injury．

3.4 Cautions for piping work
（1） Make the suction piping as short as possible，with as less bends as possible．
（2） Provide pipe supports for the piping，so that the weight of the piping is not imposed on the
pump.
（3） To prevent accumulation of air in the suction piping，make the piping slope gently upwards
towards the pump（at a gradient of 1/100 or more）．
（4） Use a suction pipe with a bore of the pump inlet size or larger. If pipes larger than the pump
inlet size are used for negative suction pressure, they should be connected to the pump
through an eccentric reducer to prevent air lock.
（5） Provide a sluice valve and a check valve in the discharge piping．
If there is danger of water hammer occurring，use a shock-absorbent type check valve．
（6） If the pump is used for positive suction pressure，a sluice valve must be fitted in the suction
piping．
（7） If the pump is used for negative suction pressure，do not install a sluice valve in the suction
piping．
（8） If the pump is used for negative suction pressure，install a foot valve equipped with a strainer on
the end of the suction piping，to prevent intake of foreign matter．
（9） Install joints of suction piping very carefully，so that no air gets inside them．
（10） Plural pumps are used for negative suction pressure, do not join each suction pipe.
（11） After connecting up the piping，be sure to clean the interior of the reservoir tank，so that no
foreign matter will be sucked into the pump from the tank．
The weight of the piping must not be imposed on the pump．If it is，the alignment
will become offset，resulting indamage to the equipment，vibration or noise．
In the case of model SJ and SJ4 pumps with suction port
diameter of 80，100 or 125 mm，use suction pipes one size
larger than the port，as indicated in this table．
Otherwise（if pipes are too small），cavitation could occur.

3.5 Instructions for wiring work
（1） Provide an electrical leakage breaker and overload protection device for the pump's main
power supply cable.
（2） Be sure to install a ground cable，to prevent electric shock.
Connect the ground cable to the ground terminal inside the motor terminal box.
（3） Install the main power supply cable through a conduit pipe or metal duct and shield it，and
ground the outer surface of the pipe/duct．
（4） Control the fluctuation of the power supply voltage within ±10% of the rated voltage and the
frequency within +3 to -5% of the rated frequency. The pump can run while the power is
controlled within this range, but DO NOT run it for a long period if the power is higher/lower than
5% of rated voltage or higher/lower than 2% of the rated frequency. And even if the supplied
power falls within the allowable range, the pump characteristics, motor characteristics, and the
temperature rise of the motor may differ from those shown at the power of rated voltage and
frequency.
（5） Cautions for inverter driven operation
・ The operating current must not exceed 90% of the rated current.
・ The operating frequency should be at least 20Hz.
・ Do not use an inverter to drive a motor which is equipped with a self protecting device.
・ Contact us when using a 400V class motor for driving the pump. Protective measures may
be required against the surge generated by an inverter.
・ An inverter-driven motor can generate a magnetic sound and thus make a more unpleasant
sound than those driven by commercial power supply.
Although this magnetic sound does not cause an adverse effect on the quality of the motor,
some inverters allow the user to adjust the tone by changing the carrier frequency. However,
changing it may reduce the allowable output of the inverter. Pay particular attention when
selecting the inverter.
Use good quality wiring equipment for wiring．
Wire the pump safely，in comply with the local requlations or codes．
The pump must be wired by a qualified electrician or other suitably qualified person．
It is illegal，and very dangerous，for unqualified people to perform wiring work.
Make sure to tighten the electric power terminals securely. Loose terminals may cause
an open phase fault, which causes burning of the motor.
Connecting the ground cable to gas or water pipes is illegal，and extremely
dangerous.

4. reparation for operation
4.1 Checks prior to test operation
4.1.1 Electrical system checks
（1） Check that the wiring has been connected correctly．
（2） Check that terminal connections have been secured．
（3） Check that grounding has been carried out properly．
（4） Check that the setting of the overload protection device is the motor's rated current．
4.1.2 Pump system checks
（1） Turn the shaft by hand，and check that it turns smoothly．
If it is not turned smoothly，it means there are rust or foreign object inside the pump, etc.,so inspect
the pump.
（2） Fully open a sluice valve on suction piping.
（3） Take out the priming plug，and supply priming water until the pump is full and water floods out of it．
Turn the pump by hand to make sure that all the air has been expelled from inside it．
4.2 Pump operation (Test operation)
Do not put a protecting cover or a filter on the motor, or it may increase the temperature
inside the motor and lead to unforeseen machine trouble.

ALWAYS turn off the main power supply before turning the pump by hand．
Do not run the pump without supplying prime water.It may cause of damages the
parts of the pump.
・Fix a coupling cover back befare operating the
pump．Hands could get caught up in the coupling．
・Be sure to fix terminal box cover of motor．
There is danger of electric shock．
Be sure to flush the pipes before starting the pump.
Contaminants inside the pump may cause damage to the
shaft sealing, rotational sliding parts, or other parts.

（1） Turn the power switch on and off a couple times，and check that the pump rotates in the correct
direction. The correct direction is clockwise，viewed from the motor end of the pump．If the pump
rotates in the reverse direction，change round 2 of the main power cable's 3 wires．
（2） Turn on the power switch，and run the pump．
（3） Gradually open the sluice valve on the discharge side，until the specified discharge pressure is
reached．
（4） Check for abnormal pressure，current，noise or vibration．
（5） Close the discharge sluice valve，and stop the pump．
Do not run the pump in the reverse direction，
or it could break down．
Do not run the pump at closed valve operation for
longer than 5 minutes．If do，the water inside the pump
will heat up，resulting in accident or trouble.
Do not restart the pump before it completely stops. Turning
ON the power while the pump is rotating causes excessive
torque on the pump, which may damage it.
Minimize the number of startups and shutdowns of the pump, or it
may lead to premature damage to the pump.
Do not start the pump more than five times an hour or so.
Keep the cocks of the pressure gauge，compound gauge and other
instruments closed at all times，except when they are being used for
checking．If these cocks are left open，breakdown is likely to occur．

5. Maintenance and inspection
５.１Cautions for maintenance and inspection
（1） When carrying out daily inspection，carefully observe the following instructions．
① If pump discharge pressure，current，noise or vibration are markedly different from normal，it
is a sign of trouble．In such a case，refer”5.4 Periodic Inspection Table”and take prompt
corrective action．For this purpose，it is recommended to keep a log book．
② If the bearing temperature gets too high, immediately stop the pump and inspect the bearing.
When the difference between the bearing surface temperature and ambient temperature is
40°C or less, the bearing temperature is normal.
③ If the pump uses a mechanical seal for shaft sealing, you may occasionally hear a
high-frequency sound (mechanical humming noise). It is not a symptom of the pump failure.
You can continue to use the pump without concerns about its quality.
④ In case the pump is equipped with a mechanical seal，there should be practically no dripping
（leakage）of water from the seal．If the mechanical seal does leak significantly，replace it．
⑤ If the pump uses a gland packing for shaft sealing, check that the packing is not excessively
heated. If the amount of leak from the gland packing is too small, it may cause excessive
heating. Refer to “5.3 Gland Packing” for details.
⑥ Keep the cocks of the pressure gauges and compound gauge closed at all times,
except when they are used during inspection．
⑦ When power failure，turn off the power supply without fail．Otherwise the pump could suddenly
start up when the power supply is resumed，which will be dangerous．
（2） If the pump is out of use for prolonged periods，observe the following instructions：
① In the wintertime，there is danger that the pump interior may freeze，so be sure to drain all the
water from the pump，or else provide thermal insulation.
② the pump uses a mechanical seal for shaft sealing, the shaft may bind at the sliding seal
surface and may not turn smoothly over time. Therefore, periodically run the pump to prevent
such binding.
③ If the pump uses a Gland Packing for shaft sealing, the pump is out of use for a prolonged
period，the parts around the seal will rust．Accordingly，dry away all moisture，apply grease
on seal parts and install new seal parts.
④ If there is a stand by pump，run it from time to time to keep it in good operating condition．
Before inspecting the pump，always turn off its main power supply．
Otherwise the pump could suddenly start up in auto operation，exposing
personnel to great danger.
Do not run the pump at closed valve operation for
longer than 5 minutes．If do，the water inside the
pump will heat up，resulting in accident or trouble.

5.2 Mechanical seal
(1) Mechanical seal is a precision parts for prevention of water leak. Handle it with care to operate
without any trouble.
(2) Mechanical seal is a consumable part. Its life depends on the quality of liquid, having foreign
objects or no, pressure, etc.
(3) If water leaks, replace it.
During the initial period after the pump has been used, a small amount of leak may occur until
the sliding surfaces on the mechanical seal completely settle (or fit) into place, but the leak
should stop in several hours of operation. Since this initial leak does not mean the defect of
the mechanical seal, you can use the pump without concerns.
5.3 Gland packing
(1) Adjust the amount of leak from the gland packing as follows:
Do not carry out this adjustment during the initial period after the pump has been used.
However, if the gland packing is excessively heated, or the amount of leak is too small, loosen
the gland nut.
If the amount of leak is not reduced sufficiently after 30 minutes of the initial operation, tighten
the gland nut gradually and evenly, while paying attention to heating of the packing.

The amounts of leak specified in the table are intended only as a rough guide. The actual leak
can be larger or smaller depending on the operating conditions.
(2) The amount of leak increases gradually over time. When it reaches roughly twice the value in
the table, retighten the gland nut.
(3) Eventually，it will not be possible to tighten the packing retainer any further．When this
happens，replace the packing.
(4) Insert the gland packing rings carefully one by one, as far as it will go. In addition, the rings
should be oriented so that each of their adjacent cut slits will be 90 to 120 degrees apart.
(5) Gland packing is a consumable part. Its life depends on the quality of liquid, having
foreign objects or no, pressure, etc.
Be careful not to tighten the gland packing excessively or unevenly. Otherwise, it
may cause excessive heating of the shaft sealing, or damage to the gland packing
or the main shaft.

6. Troubleshooting
If some trouble occurs in the pump，investigate the cause very thoroughly．If parts
need to be repaired or replaced，have the repair or replacement performed by a
specialist company or a service agent appointed by the manufacturer.
